A little ‘Cat-Sideration’!

If you happen to be getting your first cat ever, welcome to the wonderful life of being a slave to a very intelligent creature! Cats have an amazing therapeutic quality that not only brings joy, but calm to your life. They possess this unbelievable ability to manipulate their owners and their curiosity and their playful personalities are the perfect time waster.

If you’re introducing another cat into a household already occupied by a family with children, one or more cats or other animals, there’s a lot to consider. Because of animal nature, including humans, it doesn’t take much to tip the balance of harmony with change.

An animal is a lifelong commitment. They need a ‘furever’ home and this decision should not be on impulse or taking lightly. An upset to the existing household dynamics or the new cat not adjusting can be very stressful.

Points to consider when getting a new pet:

Will I hav e enough time to put into the new pet and introducing it to their new family?

Do I hav e a secure environment big enough and suitable enough to take another pet?

• Will every family member (human or the furry kind) be accepting of a new pet?

Can I financially commit to the needs of another pet with insurance, desexing, vaccinations, diet and general wellbeing?

Ensure that you are prepared before bringing the new cat home with their own litter tray, bowls, food, bedding, as well as setting up their area which will not disturb other household animal’s surroundings. Remember, wherever you start out an animal’s’ ‘security area’, this will tend to be lifelong. So don’t put the litter tray in the bedroom if you don’t wish your cat to be toileting beside your bed forever.
