I guess you could say that the Networking Issue is the Vickie Magic issue. Some say that I am absolutely at every event on the Sunshine Coast. Of course that isn’t entirely true, but I do admit that Networking is definitely one of my strategies for success. I absolutely believe that people buy from someone they know, someone they like, and someone that they trust. The only way that is going to happen is if you get yourself out there, and if you know that you are out there to build relationships, NOT to sell your gizmo. Everyone of us so hates it when we meet someone at a networking event and they try to instantly sell us their gizmo, to be honest, it is almost an insult. It is like, “Hi, you look nice, would you like to sleep with me?” No “let’s chat,” no “let’s get to know each other,” no “let’s see if we have anything in common,” just straight for the jagular. I guess if someone is desperate, once in a million years, that would work, but on the whole, people are not interested in you trying to sell your gizmo on the first date, so to speak. I personally will never forget a networking event, here on the Coast, that I went to one night and this guy was sitting next to me. For fifteen minutes straight (until I could run without being too rude) he talked about his gizmo and how much I needed it, I can assure you that even if I did need it, I just couldn’t get away from him quick enough. DON’T TRY TO SELL YOUR GIZMO AT A NETWORKING EVENT! People will not be able to get away from you quick enough. We don’t like it, IN FACT WE HATE IT. The number one best ever networking tip I can give you, is that networking is about you getting to know people, but more importantly, it is about people getting to know you. If you are just a nice person, who just shows an interest in them and what they do, then I can guarantee you that if you sell gizmos, and in a week, two weeks, a month or even a year from now they want or need gizmos, they are going to call you, rather than googling gizmos, especially if you got their card that night and kept in touch with them from then until now. Why wouldn’t they?

Everybody would rather buy a gizmo from someone they have met, whom they liked, and who showed an interest in them, rather than some stranger on the internet.

STOP THE PRESS! You may have heard a rumour that Business Matters Magazine is up for sale, just so you know, from the horse’s mouth, so to speak, the rumour is true. I have more things I want to do and I can’t do everything (who knew) at the same time, well not to the perfectionist level I would want to. I have a vision of doing success retreats, helping businesses with their teams, sales training, things like that.

I am unsure exactly how it all looks at this second. It won’t happen overnight, but my plan is that it happens this year. HOPEFULLY, YOU HEARD IT FIRST HERE. For more information about the business talk to Rod Russell at Savvy Business Sales.

2014 TALKS NOW ONLINE A sold-out audience of more than 330 people attended Noosa’s second annual TEDx conference at The J on Friday April 4. The event featured 15 local and national speakers and performers who shared their ideas worth spreading on the theme, Space.

Videos of their talks were recorded and edited by local company Earth Base Productions and can be seen online at www.tedxnoosa.com or viewed via the qr codes below. Since being uploaded on April 18, in total the talks have already been watched almost 15,000 times.

IRT The Palms Manager Robyn Redknap has visited Queensland’s Parliament House at the request of Member for Buderim Steve Dickson MP.

Local building firm Gauld Project Services has carried out work on 37 villas during the first stages of construction and the newest 10 homes (stage four) are expected to be completed by the end of May.

Mr Dickson works closely with IRT to help us provide quality aged care services on the Sunshine Coast and recently presented 20 IRT The Palms community members with Australia Day Medallions. Dr Redknap, who was named Queensland’s 2013

As part of a $75 million investment in 2012, IRT Group already owns two Communities on the Sunshine Coast – IRT Parklands at Currimundi, and IRT The Palms at Buderim – and one in north-east Brisbane, IRT The Ridge at Bracken Ridge.

The Group now has almost 600 clients in Queensland and this is projected to increase by 500 in the next 12 to 18 months.

When all the work is finished, IRT The Palms will provide 187 seniors’ lifestyle homes in the Buderim area.

JOHN PICKERING WAS BORN AND RAISED IN BRISBANE, HE IS A HAPPILY MARRIED FATHER TO ONE. On the topic of networking, John recounts how petrified he was at his first networking event, telling us how he ‘attached himself to the only person he knew like a limpid mine to a ship’. Nowadays, after a little bit of practice, joining in on networking activities (mostly at the Business Matters new issue launches), and a course with Target Training, John reaps the benefits that networking can bring. He says, “the key is to relax, be yourself, and let people get to know YOU”. John’s top tip - Don’t go straight for the jugular and try to sell something to someone you just met, they may not even be in the market for what you are selling, but they absolutely will remember that you attacked them, and not in a good way”.

Carl Wockner releases a new album,

Crayon Days Carl Wockner is an incredibly talented and humble singer-songwriter, husband and dad from Bundaberg.

Carl now calls the Sunshine Coast home. This is a man who is passionate about perfecting his craft, and transforming his passion into a successful business and career, having just released his debut album, Crayon Days, which has already sold over 500 copies! This is the second time I’ve had the privilege to interview this incredibly talented man since first hearing him play at an event in Coolum a few years ago.

Carl explained how he has used social networking to help fund his Australian Tour. He has used something I have heard of, but didn’t really understand called ‘Crowd Funding’. Carl utilised crowd funding to raise over $15,000, which funded the travelling aspects of his Australian tour. “In simple terms, crowd funding is like, ‘hey guys, I’ve got this idea, I need this much to get the ball rolling,’ so we did a calculation and figured that $15,000 would cover all the things we needed by the time you take out the overheads for the tour, so I had my album done and ready to go. I made a little video clip and sent it out to the world thirty five days out from when we needed it,” explains Carl.

got a digital download of everything he’d ever released, except for his new album, Crayon Days, $20 bought all of that plus the new album and all the art work, and from there it went up so far as offering things like guitar lessons, private band performances and personalised ringtones. Now the catch is, if he didn’t make the minimum amount, no one’s payments got processed, no one received anything, and he doesn’t raise the money to go on tour. Everybody’s payments get taken out on the completion date of a successful campaign, so it’s a huge risk with maximum benefits.

From that point our careers have very much grown and developed together” says Carl.

by Dave O’Brien “My networking strategy is of a very organic style. I don’t have a small business degree or a diploma in sales, but my time in kitchens has taught me to ‘keep it simple’ and make sure its quality,” says Dave.

1. TURN UP As a business owner I understand the importance of networking. But as a chef, this is very much out of my comfort zone as I’m used to being in control behind the scenes, and not in a crowd. To combat this, I make sure it remains a fun event and doesn’t become just another business chore.

By this, I mean I turn up, relax, and just enjoy the conversations and characters I meet. As nerve racking as it might be

2. STAY PRESENT AND LISTEN I only like doing business with people I feel I can trust and are genuine, so it stands to reason that, that’s what people want to feel with me. I’ve attended networking events and noticed the sharks in the room. Circling the crowd, stalking their prey, bouncing from conversation to conversation, and handing out and receiving business cards like they’re collecting trophies.

Sure I’ve got their card and I know who they are, but they just spent the precious conversation with me getting to know them, looking over my shoulder for their next victim. “Sorry mate, not interested.” So I like to stay present in the moment and listen to the person I’m conversing with.

Make eye contact and ask questions.

And I’m happy to invest 20 to 30

minutes getting to know someone before mingling again. It might be that the person I’m talking to mightn’t have a need for my services at that time, and this can make you feel like you’re wasting time. But I’ve built a great bond with that person, and you can bet they are going to feel comfortable recommending my business to someone who does.

And who knows, they’re building a business too and might need someone with my services down the track, and guess who they’re going to call?

Don’t be ‘That Guy!’ You know the one, getting around doing the hard sell to everybody. Be warned, don’t give him your card, he doesn’t take a hint and will harass you for weeks afterwards. Come on mate, it’s about connecting, not retailing or prospecting.

If I was going to buy on the night, I would have either stayed at home and gotten whatever it is your selling online, or approached your competitor who didn’t harass me at the event.

3. PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE At some point, someone is going to ask the question, “So what do you do?” I like to have a clear and articulate answer ready. It might be a little rehearsed and a little obvious, but I’ve asked the question at times and received a wavering, vague reply. If you don’t have the confidence to adequately describe what you do in a positive manner, then I’m not too confident on hiring you for the task. And from that point onward, I make sure I have an answer or solution for whatever comes my way. And the only way to confidently achieve this, is by having a full understanding of the product knowledge of the service I provide.

So at the moment, they are doing a great deal of late autumn weddings, in a month’s time they will be doing ‘Christmas in July’ parties. After that, it will be school camps until October.

In between all of that, they continue to have a healthy sprinkling of bookings of birthdays, anniversaries, sandwich platters and canapés for business lunches and occasions throughout the year.

Back in the 1970s a large employment agency in London which carried out regular job surveys discovered a surprising statistic.

Adding up all the job ads in the morethan-dozen newspapers in London at the time (remember this was pre-internet) and all the vacancies registered with employment agencies and the Centrelink equivalent, what percentage of the total available job market did they collectively represent?

90 per cent? 70 per cent?

Actually: eight per cent.

Hard to believe, but the fact was the vast majority of jobs were dealt with and filled on a word-of-mouth basis.

NETWORKING WITH YOUR EXISTING CLIENTS When I was a much younger man, I remember my dad dragging me out of bed at midnight to row a tiny clinker dingy across the Rubicon River. On the other side, and after lugging a bagged up 75 yard ‘Grab All’ net through a kilometer or so of boobialla scrub, we would end up on Seven Mile Beach. Half a dozen pulls of the ‘grab all’ would see us with our quota of big fat flounder (all else being returned to the ocean), and sitting around a drift wood camp fire until dawn. I have to admit that was as close as I ever got to understanding anything about the term ‘Net Working’ or should that be ‘Networking.’

Over the years I have attended many ‘Networking’ sessions. I met heaps of people who were there to promote their business and thus, their own interests. I met even more people who were there because of the free beer, and perhaps a sausage roll or two. I do not ever remember meeting anyone who was there to give.

It occurs to me that the most important networking one can be involved in, is that done with existing clients. Make sure that they are properly supported. Take an interest in their business, and make sure you understand how the service you are providing them in their efforts. Above all, never leave them with a problem. This is probably even more important if you are dealing with a technology based service or product.

Anyone buying technology based products, such as surveillance equipment, alarm systems, or access control gear, should first check the specifications sheets to make sure what is being offered is the best available gear to fill their needs. Once that is done, they should make sure the company providing the equipment or service is capable, competent and has a strong after sales support history. Most reputable companies will be pleased to provide contact details of existing clients to help potential clients determine their credentials.

My understanding of ‘Networking,’ is obviously akin to that of a complete Neanderthal. My fishing knowledge is only slightly better, but if you can avoid the midnight starts, I reckon it is more fun.

CAN I SELL MY BUSINESS TO A COMPETITOR? Up until recent years, most business owners would never have contemplated selling their business to a competitor. There are several reasons for this, generally it was due to the competitive rivalry they had developed, or the obvious one; “I don’t want them to see my figures.”

Well, things certainly have changed, and now we often see competitors as being the obvious choice to purchase industry related businesses. When you analyse this scenario it makes good sense - they take out a competitor, expand their customer base, increase buying power and the product range, and they get the big bonus of industry trained staff.

Perhaps the biggest attraction though, is the additional revenue which is gained without increasing fixed expenses such as rent and electricity, administration costs, logistics, sales staff, advertising and insurance etc. The scales of efficiency prove the above can dramatically increase profits and market share.

As an example, we have a business returning profits of approx $500,000 per annum to the existing owner. We are direct marketing this to their competitors as a bolt on business, which would offer returns of $800,000 to them, as they already have the platform in place. This method will achieve a much higher price than we would by offering the business to the general market.

You know those really nasty accidents that you pass on your way to work in the mornings? Yep, those unfortunate people are probably in for some extreme financial hardship if they don’t have their own income protection. Workers comp does not usually cover injuries that happen when you’re travelling to or from work, on days off work, or on holidays etc. So if you work a 40 hour week, you’re probably only covered for 24 per cent of the time.

2. You can have your superannuation pay for most or all of your insurances. If you think you can’t afford life insurance, TPD and income protection, and you have a super fund, then think again. There are also many other benefits to running some of these through a good super fund, such as tax benefits etc. If your super fund is a bit average, it’s easy to roll your superannuation over to a fund that can provide a more superior insurance for you. Ask your adviser about this, and whether it would be your best strategy.

3. It usually doesn’t cost any more to have an insurance specialist set up your policies than it does to approach a life insurance company yourself. I’ve come across many policies that were set up by the insured person themselves. It’s never pretty. Get professional advice, it’s too important to ‘wing it.’

4. ‘Oils ain’t oils.’ Not all Insurance policies are the same. Refer to point three again.

5. Yesterday or today is the best day to start your cover. As each day/week/month passes, our bodies get older, and illnesses and injuries can happen to that body, thus, we can become less insurable. Note: The less body problems you have at the time of taking out a policy, the cheaper it is.

The concept of collaborative learning, the grouping and pairing of students for the purpose of achieving an academic goal, has been widely researched and advocated throughout professional literature.

There’s an old adage that says ‘two heads are better than one’. Collaborative learning teams are said to attain higher level thinking and preserve information for longer times than students working individually. But why is this so?

Groups tend to learn through ‘discussion, clarification of ideas, and evaluation of other’s ideas’. Perhaps information that is discussed is retained in long term memory. By definition learning is social in nature. Using different mediums, whether it be books, discussions, technology or projects we study and develop new ideas. We impart ideas and share perspectives with others. Collaboration is a learned process. If managed correctly, it is a powerful tool that can allow educators to tap into new ideas and information.

Some ways to include best practices for collaborative learning in our classroom include: Establish group goals. Effective collaborative learning involves establishment of group goals, as well as individual accountability. This keeps the group on task and establishes an unambiguous purpose.

Keep groups midsized. Small groups of 3 or less lack enough diversity and may not allow divergent thinking to occur.

Establish flexible group norms. Research suggests that collaborative learning is influenced by the quality of interactions. Interactivity and negotiation are important in group learning.

Build trust and promote open communication. Successful interpersonal communication must exist in teams.

Allow groups to reduce anxiety. When tackling difficult concepts, group learning may provide a source of support. Groups often use humour and create a more relaxed learning atmosphere that allow for positive learning experiences.

Use real world problems. Experts suggest that project-based learning using open-ended questions can be very engaging.

Focus on enhancing problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Design assignments that allow room for varied interpretations.

MICROSOFT SMALL BUSINESS SERVER – SBS – WHAT IS ITS FUTURE? The Sunshine Coast is mostly ‘small business central’ as far as I.T. infrastructure is concerned. Many businesses are using Microsoft’s Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint and Server products, but are not big enough to afford Microsoft’s expensive Enterprise products. To provide for just this market, in 2000 Microsoft developed its hugely popular ‘Small Business Server’ or SBS, which incorporated these products into a single machine. But what is the future of SBS? Microsoft is vigorously pushing its cloud products, and there is no known planned successor to SBS 2011. The industry believes the small business roadmap to be as follows: Server itself – being continued with server 2012 Exchange – being pushed into the cloud, with Office 365 Sharepoint – being offered alongside Exchange in Office 365 SQL – still able to run on server 2012 In addition, whole servers can be hosted in the ‘cloud’.

WARNINGS AND UNFAIR DISMISSALS In order to avoid an ‘unfair dismissal’ claim under the Fair Work Act 2009 (the Act), an employer firstly must have a valid reason to terminate, and secondly, afford the employee procedural fairness. Employers more often than not have a valid reason to dismiss, but fail when it comes to procedural matters. Inherit in affording an employee procedural fairness where the conduct in question relates to performance, is a consideration as to whether the person had been warned about that unsatisfactory performance (see section 387 of the Act).

Essential to the defence of an unfair dismissal dispute, is the publication of a valid ‘warning’ to the employee concerning the conduct in question.

In Fastida Pty Ltd v JB Goodwin (2000) AIRC 223, the former Australian Industrial Relations Commission considered the issue. In that case the employer contended that it had provided the employee, Mr Goodwin, with a number of verbal warnings concerning his conduct, including the work he was required to perform and his frequent use of the telephone.

The Commission found that the employee had not been appropriately warned about his conduct, resulting in a finding of an unfair dismissal, and an order for the payment of compensation. On appeal, the findings were not disturbed. The full bench gave an insightful explanation as to what will count as a ‘warning’ for the purposes of the Act as follows:“We think a warning must: identify the relevant aspect of the employee’s performance which is of concern to the employer; and make it clear that the employee’s employment is at risk unless the performance issue identified is addressed.

In relation to the latter requirement, a mere exhortation for the employee to improve his or her performance would not be sufficient. We also note that we accept that these criterion are to be applied in a practical and common sense way, taking into account the employment context.”

The reasoning of the Australian Industrial Relations Commission was recently approved by a full bench of the Fair Work Commission in Heran Billing Group Pty Ltd v Anneveldt (2003) FWC FB 4744.

The Commission has made it clear that ‘unofficial warnings’ will not count as a warning. Accordingly, a warning process should be formalised and documented in writing to avoid this evidentiary pitfall.

Putting aside circumstances of serious misconduct, a successful warning will give the employee an opportunity to remedy their behaviour, and in the absence of compliance, provide the employer with a footing for procedural compliance with the Act. *Warning: The content of this article is in the form of an academic paper and the opinions expressed herein are generalised. The application of principles referred to can alter from case to case. NETWORKING IS CENTRED AROUND LISTENING Some of the greatest advances in my professional career over the years have come from the personal connections that I have made. To me, the old adage of, “It’s not what you know, but who you know,” rings true, to a certain extent. However, tenacity and perseverance do also play a large part in success. As a 15 year old working at Kmart as an after school job, I felt that I could relate to most of my customers on some level. In more recent years, I have learned that this ‘skill’ which I have unknowingly cultivated over the years, is referred to as EI (Emotional Intelligence).

Andrew Coleman (2008) defined EI as, “The ability to monitor one’s own and other people’s emotions, to discriminate between different emotions and label them appropriately, and to use emotional information to guide thinking and behaviour.” In the past, as a general dentist, and now as an orthodontic specialist, it was, and still is, important for me to know and recognise what emotions an individual patient presents to me with. Do they have a dental phobia?

Are they happy to be here, or are they here under protest (usually as a result of a parent’s wishes)? It is in this way that the adage above plays into my everyday work - do I know “who” my patient really is? And how can I best help them?

Knowing someone as a ‘real’ person who has feelings, beliefs and emotions is the greatest ‘networking’ I can achieve as a person and a health practitioner.

The question then begs, how does all of this tie in to ‘networking strategies?’ For me, ‘networking’ is centred around listening to others and establishing what are the most important aspects in their life. Knowing someone as a ‘real’ person who has feelings, beliefs and emotions is the greatest ‘networking’ I can achieve as a person and a health practitioner. My biggest hope is that my patients can understand this and assist me to help achieve their desired treatment outcome in the manner in which they are most comfortable.

In this era of online business especially, success doesn’t come from how great your product is, it comes from the experience your customers and prospects have. Regardless of how technology changes, I believe that has always been the case. I see a lot of business owners trying to over-automate, to the point where they lose connection with their market.

In the past few years, marketing online has taken a turn, back towards customer engagement and experience. Think of your ‘Online Engagement Strategy’ like a networking event - Getting to intimately know three people is of far more value than making sure twenty people get your business card.

Deploy a solid consistent social media strategy. Remember, Social Media doesn’t work as a static display of your business information.

It works by you having very regular content that gets your audience engaged. Consistency is the key. ‘Likes’ on Facebook are great, but they mean nothing if the audience aren’t engaged with your content.

‘Educate’ instead of ‘Sell.’ If all you are interested in is pushing your products down people’s throats, you won’t get engagement. If 90 percent of your content is useful, educational, fun, and non-invasive, then the 10 percent where you sell will be far better received.

Eye Witness Security Cameras At the same time, Dave’s younger brother had developed state of the art digital IP surveillance software, but was having trouble finding suitable persons to commercialise it. AKM branched out into supply and installation of digital IP surveillance solutions in 2003.

Despite the obvious advantages of computer based (Digital IP) surveillance, the industry has been very slow to move away from older analogue technology.

Only recently (last couple of years) have the majority of providers moved over to computer based systems.

Eyewitness Security Cameras P/L started out as ‘Asobi Kachi Management’ late in 2002. Owner Dave Collidge had just finished a 13 year stint managing a Silica Flour export business for an incredible and remarkable Queensland business man (and absolute gentleman) named Ross Burnett Maclean. (You will see the Ross Maclean Racing signage near the finishing post at Corbould Park). Dave had nothing to move on to, so AKM was set up initially to provide engineering advice to a huge Japanese conglomerate (Sumitomo) on a ‘do and charge’ basis.

As AKM ceased all other activity and developed into a solely surveillance company, Dave incorporated and registered the Eyewitness Security Cameras P/L name.

Their point of difference is that they are ‘smart enough to know but small enough to care.’ Eyewitness are absolutely determined to form lasting relationships with all clients, and therefore have a very strong commitment to after sales support.

The thing that surprises most people, is that in the past five or six years the actual cost of high resolution cutting edge technology surveillance solutions has virtually halved, while the quality of picture one can expect has almost

quadrupled. Recently, the Eyewitness team replaced an old analogue system (standard camera resolution comparison of 640 x 480 pixels) that cost the client over $20,000 only five years ago. The new system is running ten digital IP (two megapixel) cameras, and has four terabytes of storage and cost the client just over $10,000.

There are any number of reasons clients use Eyewitness Security Cameras. Till management in small businesses is often a motivation (i.e. the till does not balance and they need to know why). Protection from random acts of aggression (i.e. someone keeps putting nails under the tyres of my car), public liability (all public venues have this motivation, but things like hydrotherapy pools have a special risk), crowd management (cameras at access gates of major sporting venues), behaviour management (i.e. bullying in schools can be pretty much eliminated if the school has a good surveillance system), and obviously protection of assets (vandals and thieves tend to move on if an area is under surveillance).

BNI Sunshine Coast members have generated referrals for their fellow members resulting in business revenue for its members of $41,804,067.00 since 2005. That’s a yearly average of $40,586.47 of business per member.

BNI is a business networking organisation with 6,600 active chapters and 160,000 members in 50 countries, it is the most successful business referral organisation of its kind.

There are currently 215 BNI chapters in Australia with more than 5,000 member businesses. Last year the members generated an additional $256 million of new business through their involvement in BNI. Unlike other networking groups that are geared towards social interaction, BNI is focused entirely on generating referral business for its members. So much so that it only allows one person per business category in each chapter.BNI is a system that started in 1985 and has evolved and refined by the members to the system it is today. All the members have

to do is to adhere to the system and they get referrals.

The key to the success of BNI Members is developing strong relationships both on a personal and business level. These relationships are based on both trust and knowledge of the members and their businesses. Living the big stuff.

Reinventing your life from where you are now.

Today I’m sitting in a cafe in Mooloolaba, it’s pouring rain outside and I’m eagerly awaiting the arrival of a very inspirational woman. Kristine Carlson is best known as the wife of one of my very favourite motivational authors, the late Richard Carlson. Richard is best known for his Don’t Sweat the Small series including Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff... and it’s all Small Stuff, Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff at Work, Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff about Money, Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff for Teens, The Don’t Sweat Stories, What About the Big Stuff, Life can be this Good, etc, according to his bibliography, he wrote a total of twenty books.

Kristine and Richard co-authored one of the all time best selling of the series, Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff in Love. Kristine has come a long way since 2006, when her husband died suddenly from a pulmonary embolism during a flight from San Francisco to New York, and has gone on to write her own National Bestsellers, Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff for Woman, Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff for Mums and Heart Broken Open.

I asked Kristine for the three top things that she would recommend to our readers to start doing today, and here is what she said;

1. Breathe before you speak.

This makes you a better listener, and being a better listener will make you more responsive to life. When you’re more responsive to life, you react to life. I’ve found that doing this really makes a world of difference to the people around me, because it ensures that they know that what they have to say matters. Some of the best ideas come from listening and responding to what is being said by the people in your life.

2. Love your partner.

Every morning when you wake up, think of three things that you really love about your partner. In relationships we often get caught up in focussing on the negative aspects of our partners, and let’s face it, after about three to five years, the things that we fell in love with in our partners turn out to be the very quirks that we now curse our partners for! Think about what you love and what you have, and be thankful for it.

3. Unplug.

Breathe before you speak. This makes you a better listener, and being a better listener will make you more responsive to life. When you’re more responsive to life, you react to life.

With the business of today’s world, we have very little time to unplug. I find it’s highly important to start every day off right. Start every day off with a spiritual practice, meditate, do something that calms you. Just think of this, if you were to wake up every morning and do something that completely calms you and makes you feel happy and at peace with the world; when you go into work each morning, that happy, peaceful energy will spread throughout your workplace, making everyone else happier to be there with you!

Kristine has certainly had a trying past eight years, but she has made the choice to be positive. As each challenge comes, she stays present to what she needs to take care of, and lets go of the rest. She says she has learned not to worry or stress about the things she cannot change, because she could never be an inspiration to anyone if she allowed her thoughts about life to spiral down. When you’re feeling stressed out, you just have to remember that if you let the small stuff distract you, everything spirals down. What we don’t want to do is let the little things take away from a bigger experience, which is where we’re going to find our creativity and where we’re going to find the inspiration in our lives.

Kristine reminded me that happiness and peace are really moment to moment choices, and whenever we are upset, as long as we can see ourselves as the products of our own lives and our own choices, we can back off, and remember to choose happiness and peace. Of course it takes effort being a conscious person, it’s far easier to be asleep in life than to be awake, but your life is just that much better because of it! by Alex Mitchell For every nightmare story of people shoving business cards in your face, there’s another of laughter, connections, support, and camaraderie. So what’s the difference? Are some groups better than others, or are some people better at the craft of networking?

Perhaps it’s a little of both.

Like many business choices, a one size fits all approach rarely gives the best results. Success is found in checking out the options and finding one that suits your needs and your personality.

If you are the type who looks for meaningful one to one conversations with other business owners, thrusting yourself headlong into a room full of black suits, armed with only a handful of business cards, is likely to leave you cold. Likewise, if you have a burning desire to share your expertise and enthusiasm with everyone in the group, an hour or two sitting quietly listening to a speaker may send you home feeling unheard and unloved.

We are extremely lucky on the Sunshine Coast to have so many networking events to choose from.

They are all as different as we are; the trick is finding where you fit in.

Ask yourself these questions to help you find what you are looking for: What time of day are you available?

Various events are held over breakfast or lunch, at cocktail hour, midweek or on the weekends. Of course you are too busy running your business to attend everything, so when suits you best? You may well find that people who keep similar hours to you have other things in common with your business.

What are you looking for in speakers? Do you like learning new business skills, listening to inspirational speakers, delving in to personal development, or hearing about success from those who have achieved it? Do you like hands-on

activities or listening to theories and ideas? When you start looking into the groups on the Coast, you’ll find they each offer certain types of speakers.

You may find that that what is relevant to you changes at different points in your career. What interests you right now? Who is offering that?

Who is behind the group? Do you like their style? Is the group part of another business? Is it not for profit?

The personality and motivations of the facilitators will direct the personality and motivations of the group, so it’s important to find one aligned with your own philosophies.

What kind of people would you like to mix with? Do you yearn to be supported by others who are on a similar path – people that understand where you are in business and want to learn and grow alongside you? Or are you looking for a room full of potential clients, hungry for the help you can give? Where are these people hanging out?

What communication style suits you? Does the thought of doing a 30 second pitch leave you with sweaty palms and a dry mouth, or are you the type who needs some ‘stage time’ to feel your message has been shared?

Do you like to do structured activities or are you quite comfortable to grab a glass of wine and start chatting to whoever looks friendly? Each event has an agenda; some have lots of free chat time, others are heavily structured. Some put the spotlight on each participant in turn, and others focus their light only on the speaker.

Check in with yourself for the answers to these questions. Then, when you have an idea what you want, go out and sample what’s on offer! Book yourself to one or two meetings with all the groups that seem to fit you. Very soon, you will find where your kind are gathering, and where you fit in.

Remember to enjoy it! Networking can be a lot of fun if you let it.

Looking ahead to see back–

a personal reflection.

You never know which experiences in your work life will make a difference later, and which ones you will never think of again. Looking back I am amazed how now, in my forties, I can see the purpose and value in so many things that didn’t make sense before.

The boss that turned me off corporate through his fear driven management style, the staff member who succeeded in turning around his entire future after one ultimatum coffee chat, the business I started that exhausted me, that still runs today, a decade after selling it. Every step of the journey has a purpose; we just don’t always know what it is. Now, as I work alongside a university intern on one of my key projects, I find myself reliving so much of my past career path and extolling the importance of a broad view, real world experience, capturing the value along the way, finding mentors, and there is learning in everything.

So while an autocratic, fear based manager depleted me back then, I now have a powerful commitment to being a leader who encourages, supports and guides. From my inspiring staff member, I learnt that changing the way we are can be done with a single choice. Experiencing challenges that take us out of our depth, while exhausting, also grows us the most, and while we might not always see our value and our success, others do.

Our current perspective of ourselves is limited and narrow, take a step forward and look back and contemplate how you might see this time from the future, or just accept that it will look different then.

And these perceptions can be totally wrong -- the bad mood vibes could have been given off by the leader walking in, focusing on something else, and brushing past people whilst failing to acknowledge them.

The big components of your emotional image are a positive attitude, enthusiasm, and self-control. Outlook, of course, governs outcomes, and optimists are more likely to be successful as well as inspiring. This positivity is generally inside you, while enthusiasm and passion, on the other hand, are ways you show it to others.

The response you receive from the world mirrors, in large measure, your attitude.

Sailing history arrives on the Coast Diane Barrington and crew sailed their boat ‘Spray,’ as her owners affectionately call her, from Victoria to Bundaberg in 2006, and have now relocated their charter yacht business to Mooloolaba. “Due to Spray’s pedigree and heritage significance, we’re probably more custodians than owners,” says Diane. “We know she is the oldest yacht of her kind in Australia, and we’re pretty sure she is the oldest in the world. We’re privileged to have her as part of our family.”

It was December 1896 when Spray’s original owner met Captain Joshua Slocom in Melbourne. At the time, Captain Slocom was on his way to becoming the first solo circumnavigator, and agreed to provide his yacht’s blueprints to have a replica made ‘in the Antipodes.’ This replica yacht, with modifications undertaken in the 1940s due to an altercation during a storm with Melbourne’s Brighton Pier, is ‘Spray of the Coral Coast.’ “We have so much of her memorabilia; ‘The Age’ newspaper article of 23 December 1896 announcing the arrival of Captain Slocom in Melbourne, photographs of Spray dating back to the 1920s, the first contract of sale in February 1933 for 250 pounds. She tells a marvelous story.”

“Spray has had two lives already,” quipped Diane. “The Melbourne storm and the Bundaberg flood of January 2013.” While roped off to a pontoon in the Burnett River, Spray was hit by another yacht and taken out to sea. “By all accounts, we should have lost her. While still attached to the pontoon, we saw her dangerously close to a groyne at the river mouth. The river was running at over 25 knots and like so many other boats, she should have ended up on the rocks. It was heart breaking watching and waiting for the inevitable.

But miraculously, she found her way into the channel and headed out to sea. I remember an old timer saying that Joshua Slocom’s good angel had taken her out to the safety of the sea.” Diane found Spray a couple of miles off the coast, taking on water but still roped to the pontoon. And thus began Diane’s second labour of love.

“Her first refurbishment occurred throughout 2007, so that we could commence charter operations the following year, but subsequent health problems got in the way. It would be nearly five years before we would again be ready to start the business, but then the flood hit us, and so began our second effort at restoring this grand old lady of the sea to her former glory. We made all the below-waterline repairs in Bundaberg, and then sailed her down to Mooloolaba in 2013 to complete her restoration.”

With all the hard work now well and truly behind them, the Barrington family is looking forward to operating their yacht charter business in Mooloolaba. “She is a unique, beautiful, ocean going yacht, which we hope will add another attraction to the Sunshine Coast. She evokes the romance of a bygone era, when sailing clippers ruled 56 ISSUE 61

localhistory the seas and life was less hectic” says Diane. “There are few things more relaxing than being aboard Spray with friends and a glass of wine - she just seems to captivate everyone who steps aboard.”

Diane has already received enquiries for weddings, corporate events, memorials, fashion shoots and television. “I can also see us very quickly introducing historic cruises where people can experience the ambience of an historic blue water yacht and learn about her colourful life. Such cruises could be interactive,” said Diane, “with guests learning how to navigate her and even how to sail her if conditions permit.”

Mr Magic and I personally had the pleasure to be included in the launch of the business on a beautiful sunset cruise, the Swedish style food was provided by Richie and Sanna Kidd from the Scandic Cafe in Maroochydore. On board were Mayor Mark and Lorell Jamieson, Jason and Ingrid O’Pray, Geoff and Lea Peters, Paul and Andrea Martin, all from Sunshine Coast Regional Council, myself and Dranko Magic, Simon Ambrose from Sunshine Coast Destinations, and Richie and Sanna Kidd from The Scandic Café. We were lucky enough to be entertained by the amazing Robyn Brown and Shaun - Robyn Brown Jazz Duo. Also on board were Randall and Diane Barrington, Mitch Barrington, Captain Rob Van Veenendaal, all with Spray Cruises.

With this issue of the magazine being about networking, I can really imagine a small networking evening on board the boat. Diane said they are mostly targeting intimate business groups, intimate weddings, and farewell gatherings in a positive environment to friends and family after small funerals.

It’ll be AOK, we have you covered Growing up in country NSW, Anthea’s parents were typical hardworking farmers. For years Anthea watched on as her father complained endlessly to her mother about those damn insurance policies she had taken out.

One day whilst working on the tractor, her father suddenly sustained an injury that unsuspectingly would cause him to have almost six months off work and lose his eye. Six months went by and he returned to work but shortly after returning, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and took on the fight of his life for over nine months.

A couple of years later he suffered a massive heart attack and underwent a triple bypass which stopped him from work for another year.

Anthea’s passion for being a wealth protection specialist definitely comes from the experience she had dealt with her father. She meets with her clients usually at their home or office, and falls a little in love with them each time. Her affinity for them builds very quickly. As she looks around their homes, the family photos on their walls, their trophies, their children and grandchildren, and then she knows; she MUST protect this family or person. She can see just how very hard they have worked to get where they are and see an absolute necessity to protect them. She respects their love for all their ‘stuff’ that they have, because ‘stuff’ can create ‘havingness’. And ‘havingness’ can give joy. Not happiness, but joy. Also very

important. Her relationship with these clients (who often become great friends) continues for years and years to come.

Imagining the outcome for their whole family if her mother wasn’t so adamant about taking out the insurance policy she did is a daunting feeling for Anthea. They probably would have lost everything that they had worked 363 days a year, for 30 years at that point, to accumulate. The farm. The house.

Everything. This is what encourages Anthea to help as many people as she can from similar situations.

with Dranko Magic Networking, just the sound of the word makes some people shiver. We don’t realize it but we are networking more than what we think. I was one these people, I didn’t realize at first that what I was doing was networking.

I love golf, yes that’s right I really love golf. Getting out in the fresh air for a round for me is perfect. I tend to play with different people each week, so over a four and a half hour walk I get to do a lot of talking.

When you play you really begin to get to know the guys you are playing with.

Where they live, what they like, what they don’t like, how many kids they have, what other sports they have played, where they grew up etc.

Networking can be doing something you love, it really is just about getting to know people, building relationships with someone that you may one day do business with. The next time they want or need your product or service, chances are they are going to think of you.

You don’t really talk too much at all about what you do. Yes it’s spoken about but very little. Once it’s all over you have the chance to play the best hole on the course the 19th. This is where you share a beer or two and a few laughs about the great round or not so great round you just played.

So next time you play a round of golf and your partner gives you a hard time, tell them you’re networking.

What has happened here is that you have got to know some new people, had a beer and a laugh. You have not pushed what you do at them and they have got to know you for who you are.

This creates interest, when people get to know you, get like you, you have more of a chance they will do business with you.

Vickie used to laugh at me when I used to say that my golf was networking, that was until we

actually started to do business with some of the guys from the club.
