Work/life balance; it’s about getting the balance right. It’s about making sure that our work or our business is NOT our whole life. I for one certainly did not used to be too good at this. I would work from before sunup till way after sun down and didn’t really have much time for anything else. What I learnt from that, honestly, was what not to do. I didn’t really spend much time with my family and friends, and soon my relationships started to fade. I am a person who needs to schedule everything if it is going to happen. So I now use this scheduling to ensure that I spend time doing things with the people I love. For me this has been a way to bring back the balance.

Recently I heard someone say they didn’t think a child should be a scheduled item in a calendar, and I think that is true; however I also think that everything is what we say it is. So we can choose to say that is a bad thing, an unimportant item in our calendar, or we can choose to say it is a good thing, a very, very important thing in our calendar – so important that it gets a scheduled special spot in our calendar. You see, we can make things good, or bad, or indifferent, simply by adding our own words to them. Whatever we say, is, for us.

When I started to schedule time with my loved ones and friends, I did this to tell them they were so important to me that I wanted to absolutely ensure I got to spend time with them.

For me this is what works to help me keep my balance. I do the same for my exercising; I block out when I am going to do it for the week, and then just do it. Balance is about all the different areas of our life being equal, so we can’t do too much or too little of any.

Balance areas for me include, in order: family, health, relationships, spirituality, work, relaxation and holidays, nature, finance. For me, every single one of these things needs to have an overall feeling of fun. If it isn’t fun, I am not going to do it and that includes work and exercise. What is work/life balance to you? by Steve Goodman Are you living to work, or working to live? It is a question we have all wrestled with at some time, especially as small business owners. It’s one that can be looked at a number of different ways.

In some ways it is the same question that fitness pros ask of dieters: “Are you living to eat, or eating to live?”

At the heart of both questions is asking yourself if you are doing something because of the necessity of its nature, or because of the pleasure that it brings.

Sure, you could survive on wheatgrass and protein powder, but who doesn’t want a milkshake every now and then?

With work, as with food, it does not have to be an either-or decision. Many of us do ‘get high’ on the feeling of a job well done, just as we relish the taste of an occasional filet mignon. The idea of working less and living a little more in no way means to take away from the satisfaction or pleasure you get from your work. It’s wonderful if you are one of those so blessed that you find your career fulfilling, but it should not be the 6 ISSUE 55

only thing that defines your life. The key is in striking the right balance.

Here are ten essential ways to help even the most die-hard workaholic achieve a better work/life balance, and start working to live, instead of always living to work.

1. The Power of no

One of the surest ways to achieve and maintain a good work/life balance is to learn and embrace the profound power of simply saying “No”. I am not saying to turn down important job or business assignments, but learn to say “No” to the less important things. There are only so many fundraisers, networking events or panels you can attend! Set your priorities, and don’t be afraid to say “No” to things at the bottom of the list.

2. Simplify and downshift If you are working overly hard just to pay the bills, maybe the bills are too high.Maybe you are living beyond your means, trying to support lots of things that you want, rather han you really need. Spending all your

time worrying about earning enough money is physically and emotionally draining. Simplify! Do you need a new car every two years? Don’t be afraid to downsize. I know a powerful executive who just moved from a five-bedroom house occupied by just herself and her husband, to a twobedroom townhouse, and she couldn’t be happier. When you downshift you can spend a lot less time working and much more time enjoying your life.

3. Schedule some me t ime

Whether it’s a mani/pedi, a massage, a yoga class or a workout, schedule some time for yourself. Make it an actual appointment that you must stick to, just as if it were an important meeting or conference call.

4. Flexit ime

If you are not the boss, ask the boss about flexitime or telecommuting.

Both are a great way to improve your work/life balance. And if you are the boss, come on – why aren’t you taking advantage of this?

5. Leave work at work

This is a tough one, especially in this ‘work anywhere, anytime’ digital age. But that is also why it is so important. When you are with your family, at the dinner table, or with friends on the beach, don’t be afraid to disconnect for a while.

6. Find your product ivity sweet spot We all have that time of day when we are the most productive and get things done most efficiently.

Find your productivity ‘sweet spot’ and schedule your most complex tasks at that time. You will get much more done in a day, and have much more time to do what you enjoy.

7. Plan, plan, and plan If you plan your work week and set specific and attainable goals for each day, you will undoubtedly work less and play more.

8. Good can be good enough

Many of us have come to believe that to achieve the right work/ life balance and to have it all, we have to be super at everything – Super Mum, Super Dad, Super Employee, Super Entrepreneur, etc. But you know what? You can have it all by just being a good mum, a good dad, and a good business person or employee.

Plus, no more need to drop your cape off at the drycleaners!

9. Get healthy

You cannot be in balance workwise or life-wise if you do not take care of yourself and your health.

10. Learn t o value t ime Learn the precious value of time over money and consumption. Few have found that by trading time for income, they have truly become rich.

And finally, the best way to achieve a work/life balance is to do something for a living that you truly and honestly love doing. Just because it’s work, doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. If you have never had a day on the job where you smiled and felt deeply and sincerely, “I can’t believe I actually get paid to do this,” then you probably are in the wrong profession.

Online vs offline: How to win friends and influence people A strange thing has happened now that going online has become ubiquitous for us all: consumers are surfing the net in search of what’s happening offline.

People want to know what’s happening in the ‘real world’. They are sceptical of sales pitches and carefully crafted corporate reputations. They do more research for each and every purchase.

They don’t look to brands because the brand won’t highlight its faults – they want the ‘real world’ facts.

What does this mean for you as a business owner? Don’t shy away from transparency – grab it by the horns!

In marketing circles there is a new buzzword taking the world by storm, online and offline: the term ‘influencers’.

In 2013 an influencer is not what we have traditionally believed it to be; it is

Post behind-the-scenes shots, product development ideas, even photos of boxes that have just come in containing new season arrivals. These are things your customers wouldn’t normally

see online or offline. This shows the human side of your business.

2. Target practice Make sure you are delivering content, such as photos, blogs and product information, that is appealing to your target market. Give them what they like and they will share.

3. Reach out Contact other influencers in your industry and begin building relationships. You can then share your networks and broaden your reach. Offer guest blog posts to colleagues; get together with others and contact a local media outlet about doing a news story on a trend in your industry; make industry-specific groups on Facebook and make them exclusive for industry discussion.

4. Pareto proof You’ve probably heard of the Pareto Principle that 80 per cent of consequences stem from 20 per cent of causes. When it comes to networking and meeting people, the same ratio can help you nurture existing relationships and create new ones.

So get out there and network, online and offline, and reap the rewards.

Life in the balance Achieving a work/life balance has become the phrase du jour as many people struggle to find enough hours in the day to do everything they feel they need to do.

Certainly, I was no stranger to that quandary in my earlier life when my kids were younger. I offer my heartfelt sympathy to those trying to hold down careers while ensuring they are also seen as ‘responsible’ parents and somehow also find time to be recreational!

Balance is important in everything, really. We live in a society of widely differing views and priorities, and the recent election result has prompted incoming Prime Minister Tony Abbott to emphasise his approach will be calm and steady, not radical and divisive.

Here on the Sunshine Coast, I am seeking to ensure we maintain a balance between the need to generate jobs for our workforce and to reduce the ‘brain-drain’ of young people from the region, while ensuring we preserve and maintain our environment and lifestyle.

Some might say jobs are more important than ‘green’ issues, but it’s important to remember that our pristine coastal and hinterland environment and the lifestyle it affords are part of our natural advantage over other regions in what is a genuine contest to attract new business investment.

‘The Natural Advantage’ is in fact the branding to our 20-year Economic Development Strategy, which we launched on September 24.

I am writing this article during my current visit to China, which in many regions is heavily polluted and full of people who wish they could see the sky now and again.

When we host Chinese delegations on the Coast they are amazed and attracted by the things we take for granted. This serves as a good reminder that the balance of our economic activity and environmental care should always be maintained.

As a keen visitor to China, I love the vibrancy of its people, its culture and its diversity, but I can tell you I already miss the clear air of the Coast and look forward once again to seeing the sky and the stars.

Work/life balance – does it really exist? Well, my interpretation is that everything exists or doesn’t exist if we say so. Whatever we say is, just is.

“If you think you can or you think you can’t you are 100 per cent correct” Henry Ford

So if you say you have work/life balance, then you do. If you say you don’t, then you don’t.

On the theme of ‘whatever we say is’, the last 12 months have really seen me take on a different role for myself.

My level of happiness is ridiculously high and I know that the first step in making that happen was to say it.

Your work/life balance relates to the whole balance of your life and your level of happiness at the end of the day. And your perception of work/life balance is controlled by your level of happiness, don’t you think? Imagine if there were no failures; imagine if there was nothing wrong; imagine if you could click your fingers and all your cares and worries could disappear. Mmmm, some of you might be reading this and thinking, “Yeah right, and imagine if I was magic”. Well I am!

My absolute goal, my absolute passion is to make a difference in the lives of people around me, and that includes you. At Business Matters Magazine we don’t print anything negative and the reason for that is that my philosophy, my whole way of being is, ‘Whatever you focus on grows’. So if you focus on what is wrong, then all that can ever happen is that that something that is wrong will get bigger and bigger and bigger, and pretty soon consume your every waking moment. It has to, because what we focus on grows.

Whereas, if on the other hand you get a pen and write down a list of 50 things that are amazing, awesome, that you love in your life right now, and then spend the rest of the day (and more) focusing on those things, all that can happen is that what you focus on grows. Pretty soon the great, amazing, wonderful things going on around you, that you forgot about while you were consumed in your Egor “Woe is me, I hate the world” state, begin to disappear.

Yes this takes practice, yes this takes time to get better and better and better at, but the fact is that if you are living your life in a negative state, your balance and your happiness level can only get worse. What if you started and ended every single day with some quiet ‘you’ time, where you actually focused on everything amazing, everything you love, everything that is right in your life? What if you stopped yourself from even going to the dark side. I know that things go wrong, but all 14 ISSUE 55

there is to get from the things that go wrong is a lesson.

Learn the lesson and then come back over to the light side.

It is never ever, ever the situation, it is always always, always our reactions to the situation. Whatever happens, happens.

We see it around us every single day; things happen to some people that we might look at and think, “If that happened to me I would be an absolute mess.” Maybe you would, but only if you say so. Keep on learning how to look for the lessons in what is wrong. Find the lesson, learn it and LET IT GO. If you focus on what’s wrong, if you keep looking at it, if you keep BRINGING IT UP, if you have to tell everyone in the world about it, guess what will happen? Yep you got it, what you focus on grows, so it will just get bigger again.

Is there something happening right now in your life that you can LET GO? Is there something that you keep on focusing on, keep on allowing to consume you or control you? Make a pact with yourself right now to leave it, look for the lesson, tell yourself what you learnt, then leave it.

Now write down that list of the 50 amazing, wonderful things in your life; your friends, your family, where you live, what you do, anything and everything that you love.

Then really get into those things, really be grateful for those things, really appreciate those things. Then do it again tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day, and pretty soon your life will be MAGIC, it just has to be.

Experts share knowledge at the upcoming ‘Sunshine Coast Futures Conference’ The Sunshine Coast Futures conference series has become an established part of the Sunshine Coast calendar over the past three years.

An introductory address will be given by the Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Cr Graham Quirk, and Sunshine Coast Mayor, Cr Mark Jamieson. Next comes the keynote address by Canadian expert, Professor Mario Polèse,who will share his wealth of knowledge on peri-urban regions. Prof Polèseis is the Senior Adjunct Professor in the School of Urban Planning and Senior Canada Research Chair in Urban and Regional Studies, INRS. He is also author of The Wealth and Poverty of Regions: Why cities matter (2011).

The upcoming 2013 conference, to be held on Friday 8 November, focuses on the opportunities and challenges created by our geographic position in the wider South East Queensland region, and how we can deliberately harness the benefits provided by our proximity to the State’s capital.

Delegates are expected to leave with a better understanding of how strategic links and relationships work, and how they can develop networks to advantage their businesses, associations and institutions. Attendance at the conference also earns continuing professional development points.

Later, Prof Mike Hefferan, Pro ViceChancellor (Engagement), will present original research followed by a panel discussion that explores ways to strengthen and create connections.

Panel members include former Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Sallyanne Atkinson AO, Michael Kerry, key author of the Regional and Infrastructure Plan and Program for South-East Queensland, David Eades, Deputy Director-General, Housing Services, Department of Housing and Public Works, Queensland and Andrew Craig, former Queensland Trade Commissioner (London and Los Angeles) and previous CEO of the Australian Industry Group and Commerce Queensland.

I tend to use big, well-known brands as examples, mainly because everyone in the room can relate to them. The frustration we face all too often is that small business owners say, “Branding is different for those guys; they have millions of dollars.”

The reality is that the principles of branding are really no different whether you are a mum and dad business or a global conglomerate.

Sure, the amount of money you have to spend on your branding differs from the budgets of Coca Cola, IBM and Microsoft, but that doesn’t make your brand any less important. Your brand should help you drive your business.

When considering purchasing an investment property, make sure that you are making the most of your money. Read investment and property-related articles and prepare for the peaks and troughs of the property cycle. Think about a long-term strategy to ensure you will make a healthy gain from your investment, and get informed about your finance options, which include having a clear understanding of your financial goals, before you shop for property.

As the landlord, you need to think less about your own property preferences and more about your potential tenants’ wants and needs.

Think about the kind of tenants you want to attract to your investment property, and use this to help you hone in on the type of property and property features that would be desirable for these potential tenants.

For first time investors, when building wealth through property there are a number of factors to consider. Talk to people in the know, such as experienced investors, about the locations you are contemplating buying in. Find a professional mortgage broker who can help you compare your loans and guide you through narrowing it down to one suited to your needs and objectives.

Other factors to take into consideration when looking at potential investment properties are safety and security. Just as you do in your own home, your tenants will want to feel safe in theirs.

There are also lots of tax and legal considerations associated with property investment, so it’s a good idea to also seek professional advice from an accountant and solicitor.

Location is a key driver when selecting an investment property, so aim for the best location you can afford. Being selective and saying no to certain requests for your time is essential. Task management is more important than ever.

Here’s a proven way to manage tasks:

Firstly, check your diary or calendar for appointments and determine how much work time you have available for tasks. Using a spreadsheet, enter the time available and make a note of anything that needs to come from others.

List your tasks, estimating how many minutes for each task. Next, allocate an A or B to each task. A’s must be done today, B’s can be done if you complete all the A’s. If tasks come up during the day, these can be added as C’s. Total the minutes column.

Micro-managing tasks is a sure way for task management to go out the window. Keep your task descriptions as broad as they can be, eg. ‘Pay bills’.

Your other systems will tell you which bills need to be paid and when.

Make sure you block out ‘Me Time’ for doing what you love, exercising and relaxing. This is so important for your health and being on top of your game. One idea for keeping moving during the day is to have ‘dance breaks’. Get up from your desk and dance to your favourite music for a couple of minutes at regular times during the day. Okay, that might be tricky in an office, shop or site full of people, but for all you homebased business owners working alone, go for it, because you can!

Finding the elusive work/life balance We spend an incredible amount of energy discussing, debating, and chasing this ideal but often elusive concept of work/life balance. In circles of professional women, it’s hard to be in a room without this issue being raised.

In recent years, working professionals have placed an increased emphasis on establishing a work/life balance, looking for ways to effectively juggle career, family, health and personal responsibilities in order to reduce stress and increase productivity and job satisfaction.

Of course the perfect equilibrium of work and personal time is a noble goal to strive for, but the reality is that few can achieve and sustain it.

Along with the surge in online communications and technology, we’ve made ourselves constantly available, checking and responding to emails, voice mail, and the Internet via our smartphones. This keeps us connected to our work 24 hours a day, blurring the fine line between work and life.

While balance becomes even harder to attain while we’re always reachable, we need to be thinking about how we can effectively integrate technology in an effort to be more productive with our time so that we enjoy more time doing the things outside of work that we love. In essence this means working smarter not harder.

But this has brought me to think, is work/life balance the goal, or is it about enjoying the various aspects of your life? Can we have it all? What does work/life balance look like; is it something that’s so individual that we can’t put a label on it?

Although plenty is still being written and debated about the perfect work/life balance, the conversation is beginning to shift toward concepts such as energy management and flexibility.

Happiness is still the ultimate goal, but happiness and work/life balance aren’t the same thing. You can have perfect work/life balance and a deadend job that leaves you exhausted. Those who are able to lead inspired, engaging lives in various spheres – from work, to family, to personal wellbeing – have something greater than balance. They have fulfillment.

Seeking perfect balance between your personal and professional life may actually be senseless. Instead we might be better off considering whether we are fulfilled, both personally and professionally, by asking ourselves the following questions: 1. Do I have energy for things that are important to me?

2. What gives me energy and engages me? How often am I doing those things?

3. If I could have more hours in a day, what would I do with this time?

4. If I could craft a perfect day, what would those 24 hours look like?

5. Do I have mental space to think? How able am I to take a step back periodically and assess what’s working and what’s not?

6. What are the three to five things I need in my life to be happy and healthy? What can I do to ensure these?

You may find that your ‘out-of-balance’ life is actually very rewarding. Or that you need to create some control over your time to be calmer or boost energy levels.

Many electricity retailers represent their charges on invoices differently and this does lead to confusion.

The 2013-2014 government gazetted tariff states the maximum a business can be charged. This document can be found at www.qca.org.au/files/ER-Gazette-NEP201314-0613.pdf.

QLD Small Business general supply 23.218c per kWh + 130.161c per day Recently we were presented with a customer’s invoice where, due to the multitude of line items on the invoice, they were unsure exactly how much they were paying for their electricity.

All invoices can be directly compared against the government gazetted tariff. Note the days on the invoice and multiply that by the daily tariff noted as 130.161 cents ($1.30) for QLD business customers. Deduct this amount from your total invoice (excluding gst) and then divide this dollar amount by the kWh charged on your invoice. This will give you a cost per kWh to compare with the allowable tariff.

Whether it be Origin, AGL, Energy Australia, Q Energy or an alternate retailer, all invoices are different, but they are all comparable to the gazetted tariff.

Retailers may offer discounts but beware of the small print. Some retailers offer a discount off the energy component only, which may be only 40 per cent of your invoice total. Other retailers may offer discounts off the total invoice but only for year one of a two year contract.

Know how much you are paying, then shop around for the lowest price possible. Make sure you are comparing the total spend of each contract and not just the per cent discount on offer.

Understanding what is driving our market We are now coming into the traditional spring and summer peak of our Sunshine Coast property market.

The first week of spring has been absolutely phenomenal with the level of enquiry and sales. This is due to a number of factors but the driving force for what we are seeing is all we have to offer here on the Coast. A survey was conducted on 10,000 Australians between the ages of 50 and 60. They were all asked what they looked for when they retire, and not surprisingly the top of the list was climate and medical facilities. The Sunshine Coast tips the scales in both those areas, and more and more people are starting to notice and wanting our lifestyle.

In July this year Realestate.com received over 116,000 search results for the Sunshine Coast greater region, proving again that the southern buyers are keeping a close eye on our market and waiting to make the move.

RP Data Chief Research Director released that the southern property market has been in a solid incline with an averaging 6.5% increase since May last year. This is a positive not only for the Australian market but also for our Sunshine Coast market.

With a spike in tourism over the past few months, it’s becoming clearer that the gap between Sydney and Melbourne markets is driving the southerners north and they are choosing the Sunshine Coast to call home. In July this year Realestate.com received over 116,000 search results for the Sunshine Coast greater region, proving again that the southern buyers are keeping a close eye on our market and waiting to make the move.

As we get closer to the end of this year we are going to see more and more evidence of the southern influence, with days on market getting fewer and more and more property selling each week. The supply and demand factor will be the key to capitalising on this market trend.

Recent weather events on the Sunshine Coast have highlighted to several buyers of residential properties the risks of buying a home without having their own insurance in place prior to settlement.

Many are not aware that the standard residential contracts in use throughout Queensland state that the property is at the buyer’s risk from 5pm on the business day after signing the contract. This means the buyer should take out insurance on the property, to protect them against the risk of it being damaged during the period between contract and settlement.

The reason for this is that there is no automatic right to pull out of a contract just because the property is damaged. In most cases, the buyer must still settle and pay the full price for the property.

There is a statutory exception to this (and neither party can contract out of it) – if the property is so badly damaged that it is unfit for human habitation, then the buyer can cancel the contract.

It is unlikely that mere water inundation would be enough to enable a buyer to cancel and get their deposit back. There is also some argument as to how this statutory protection operates – is a buyer able to cancel a contract as soon as the property becomes uninhabitable, or does the right arise only if the property is uninhabitable on the settlement date?

Many buyers choose to hold off on getting their own insurance in place until the contract is ‘unconditional’; for example, after the finance and the building and pest inspection conditions have been satisfied. The problem with this situation is that there may be damage to the property that the buyer is unaware of until they carry out their pre-settlement inspection.

If the damage was caused before the contract became unconditional (and therefore before the buyer had insurance in place), the buyer may still have to settle the contract and personally bear the cost of repairing the damage caused.

How to Save $60,000 Beneficiary Tax At present, your super fund is required to keep a track of non-concessional contributions and concessional contributions. Non-concessionals are referred to as the tax-free component and concessionals are referred to as the taxable component.

If your super fund is in accumulation phase, all its earnings go towards increasing the taxable component. Note that this is quite separate from the tax paid on earnings. If the fund is in pension phase, then earnings are allocated to each component based on their proportional balances at the start of the pension.

One of the disadvantages of Australia’s superannuation vehicle is that the taxable component of your member balance is taxed at 15%, plus the Medicare levy, when paid to a non-dependant beneficiary on your death.

The ‘Recontribution Strategy’ though can decrease the taxable component and increase the tax-free component of your member balance. The strategy usually requires you to be over 60 years of age and will differ depending on whether you are retired or still working.

Consider Mary, who is still working and will turn 65 years of age in this financial year. Her member balance is $400,000 and has a 100% taxable component. If Mary was to pass away today and her superannuation money went to a non-dependant, a minimum of $60,000 would need to be paid in tax.

If, however, she was able to implement a withdrawal and recontribution strategy, she could change that taxable component to a tax-free component and divert $60,000 from the ATO to a non-dependant beneficiary. This is difficult to do if you belong to a retail or industry fund, but is simple if you have a self-managed fund (SMSF).

While the incumbent government will probably continue to make legislative changes to superannuation, the structure of this sector in Australia has been and is continuing to go through a fundamental shift. Rather than leave investment decisions to professional fund managers, average Australians are taking control of implementing their long-term investment preferences via SMSFs. ATO research shows one million Australians already have an SMSF, with another 1.4 million planning to start one within the next three years.

The SMSF is no longer a mystery. It is here to stay. Just be sure to partner with a good adviser, administrator and auditor.

WORK TO LIVE Work/life balance has been quoted many times in the last decade as the desirable status that every working person seeks.

There have been many initiatives and policies introduced by HR departments in large organisations on how they will provide a work/life balance for their workers.

The question is, has this balance been achieved, or is it even attainable? Is it only about the employer providing the framework for a work/ life balance or is it an inherent part of each individual, or circumstantial as to whether they work to live or live to work?

While organisations can support or encourage a work/life balance by providing flexible working hours, creative leave options and the opportunity to work from home, each individual has to decide if they want to work to live or live to work, and then define what the balance looks like for them. In doing this, the younger generations can provide a good role model in their understanding of what balance looks like for them and seamlessly achieving it. Older generations struggle with over-commitment and guilt, which is often self-imposed.

It is about having balance across all aspects of your life, and defining what you need to be fulfilled in all areas of your life, which will ultimately result in engagement at work and with family and friends. For one person it might be that they want to be able to go to the gym three mornings a week before work.

For another person, it is picking the kids up from school and taking them to soccer on Wednesdays. Another person may have an ailing mother who they like to visit at lunch time twice a week. The presence of periodontal disease may be associated with heart attack, diabetes, kidney disease, preterm low birth weight babies, and stroke. So maintaining a healthy mouth can indeed impact on your general health!

Business Boardroom Ross Forbes from Forbes Chatham Insurance and Tradesure was the speaker for our recent Boardroom Business lunch. Ross shared with us that he is still striving towards work/life balance, but feels he is starting to get it right. What Ross does is to take one hour a day to do what he really wants.

He also takes one afternoon a week to do a leisure activity he really enjoys.

Ross told the group that he has been in partnership with Brian Chatham for almost thirty years. He believes that the longevity of the business is because he and Brian are always thinking about what they can do within the industry to be different and unique. This was where the idea for Tradesure came from. Ross and Brian believed that there was a real need for insurance specifically for tradies.

with Dranko Magic Just imagine you are walking through the forest, it’s a beautiful spring morning. The bird are chirping, the air is cool and fresh. your feet are all wet from the moist grass and it’s quite bright as you move towards the end of the forest. The sun shining down through the tree’s, the breeze is getting a little stronger. You are at the end of the track and there it is, in the opening. Work/life balance.

“What’s that” you say, “Work/life balance. Is it really true, could there be such a thing.” We all talk about it but do you really think that it could exist?

I say, “yes it does, it all depends on you.”

We all have to try and make the time to have the right balance in our lives. Most of us think it all about spending more time doing the thing we love. To a degree this is true, but it’s not all about doing or finding the time to do those things.

Work life balance for me is also about the people that mean the most to you in life and letting them know. When was the last time you really spent some quality time with the one you love?

It’s no use working our butts off if we can’t share this with the one we love.

Recently while doing my delivers I got a call that my Vickie had been taken to hospital with breathing difficulties. At this point everything stopped for me, nothing else mattered. The thought of something happening to Vickie just broke my heart in a split second. At the end she was ok, we did spend six hours at the hospital and can I just say a big thank you to the staff at our Nambour hospital.

To me you are all heroes in my books.

true meaning of work/life balance. Yes we all want to spend time doing the thing we love, and spend time with the ones we love. So why do we often put this aside and focus just on our work. Let’s all try to find the balance.

Some of us do it, some try and some just don’t find the time at all. It’s very easy to slip into work work work and forget about the true balance in your life, the ones closest to you.

We do have a pretty good balance Vic and I but at the end of the day we to may forget about the balance at times. So make a effort everyone and find the time to do the thing you love with the ones you love. Because if you stop work right now for the rest of the day, it’s still going to be there tomorrow.

Could a personal assistant be one answer to work/life balance?

Don’t wait until you’re at breaking point to recognise the need for a personal assistant to leverage your time. Are you spending too much time working on ‘stuff’ that could be delegated? Are you losing focus on your core skills? Finding there is simply just not enough faceto-face time with your clients? How do you work on your business when you are working in your business all day?

There is a common myth that nobody can do the job as good as you. Sure.

Or maybe. Think about how you started in your business, being the jack of all trades, the master of some, and gradually building that business to the level you have achieved today.

Now consider the tasks that no longer really need your personal input. Be honest with yourself! Write down a list with two columns - the tasks that you must do yourself, and the tasks you really could delegate.

When you recognise that there are a number of tasks you are doing that really could be delegated, then you

are close to acknowledging that a personal assistant is possibly the answer. Any task that is revenue driven generally needs some of your input but consider your marketing, bookkeeping, database, filing, reports, CRM, and you are getting a clearer picture what your personal assistant could do for you.

Formulate a procedure manual of ‘how to’ tasks for that personal assistant, a list of ‘must have’ skills, experience and knowledge. Consider also, that with a bit of training, that perfect person should be able to handle those tasks. Having a healthy attitude and understanding towards your goals would rate higher than the right skills for your personal assistant, as skills can be taught however attitude cannot.

When you engage with a personal assistant, let them work and you can either relax or utilise your time more effectively but be aware, you should lead by example. When you manage your time efficiently as the leader of the team, your team will follow.

Your personal assistant needs to fully understand your goals (and perhaps the dreams that come with them) and know your vision for your business.

Without this understanding, how can your assistant truly assist you?

Delegation is vitally important so ensure you maximise the benefits. It doesn’t mean you need to prepare more, delegate the tasks that don’t require your input, set up your diary so you both know and understand each other’s schedule and communicate regularly via a CRM program. Sure, your PA may make mistakes and decisions that may not always be your choice, but if it is made with the best intention, then through communication, you can always amend, rectify or accept.

Why would you invest in a personal assistant then? When you want to leverage your time and acknowledge that to have a personal assistant keeping the fires burning or the engine running within your business will lead to more efficiency, then it is time to make the decision. Generally, the diary management, the administration, the accounts and marketing don’t usually require the business owner to be chained to the office. Imagine the possibilities if you had more freedom to have better clarity and focus on your business, more face-to-face time with clients or perhaps the option to spend more time with your family! That is the benefit of a personal assistant.

Sunshine Coast’s Digital Community Celebrates

Google eTown Award More than 100 Sunshine Coast Digerati representing the region’s digital community recently attended Google e-Town Celebration event to recognise their recently awarded title of Queensland’s most tech-savvy town.

The annual award recognises those communities which are outpacing the rest of the country in having their small businesses use the web to connect with customers and grow.

Regional Development Australia Sunshine Coast CEO Mr Russell Mason said the region had been at the forefront of the digital revolution for many years and was well positioned to benefit from the global digital economy.

“Those local businesses that capture the unique opportunity of broadband and information technology development will help further the economic and

social wellbeing of communities across the Sunshine Coast region,” he said.

Guest speakers at the event included Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson and Google Australia’s Global Communications and Public Affairs Manager Henning Dorstewitz who joined the event virtually via Google Hangout.

Is it even possible?! Everyone I know feels that the world has sped up; that time goes much faster and there is never enough time to do anything, let alone everything!

Overwhelm is a familiar feeling.

In 1995 we apparently had perfect work/ life balance, with almost seven hours of free time every day according to research from Direct Line Insurance. In 2013 we have only two hours and 46 minutes. No wonder we feel overworked!

The major culprit it seems is technology and our need for constant connection.

Emails follow us everywhere. Smart phones may be wonderful, but they also keep us constantly on alert. Between texts, emails, reminders and social media our ‘free’ time isn’t free any more.

This information, combined with another piece of research on stress and how we perceive what happens to us, is critical. How we think about stress determines how our body reacts to it; whether we have a negative physiological response or not.

Research from Harvard shows us that it isn’t the stress that causes disease – it’s how we think about what is happening.

Do you perceive emails or your work as stressful? If so, the best way to achieve work/life balance or at least a sense of it is to change the way you are choosing to think. You could also try these ideas: 1. Unplug in the evenings. No phone, emails, computers, ipads, ipods or any other device

2. Choose to think about what is happening in your life in a way that has some positive connotation: eg. things might be challenging but you are growing and learning 3. Question the amount of extracurricular activities you and your children have. Perhaps a little more ‘sit around together and just be’ time would be a good idea 4. Make some time for yourself every day – even if it’s five minutes Wake up and win Your work/life balance is all about perception, not reality.
