International Green Week Berlin 2017 It is certain to be one of the real highlights of the International Green Week Berlin 2017 (20-29 Jan.): Fjord Ponies will be featured at the world’s leading exhibition for agriculture, food and horticulture for the first time, in Hall 25, the Livestock Hall. On 28 and 29 January the organisation representing Fjord Ponies (IGF) and the Brandenburg-Anhalt Horse Breeders’Association will be collaborating with the German Equestrian Federation (FN) to stage the FN National Show for Fjord Stallions. On 28 January these stallions will then be shown to a panel of judges. The ‘Vikings’ Dun Horses’ will be presented
individually on the triangular track, standing, walking and trotting, and then arranged around the show ring. At the time the show takes place the Fjord Pony stallions that will be accepted must be four years or older and registered in the Stallion Book I of one of the breeding associations affiliated to the FN. The judges will be choosing an overall winner from among the young stallions, an FN national champion stallion and an overall winner among the older stallions. On 29 January the public will be able to see the Fjord Ponies in general presentations. These dun-coloured ponies from the Norwegian coastal region have been long
established in their native country as versatile horses for working in harness, especially in agriculture. They were ideal as draught, pack and riding horses on family farms. They can cope well with the harsh living conditions and are able to fulfil all the tasks required of them. The stud book register was introduced in 1864 and thoroughbred breeding has continued ever since then.

According to the agreement, InVivo Agriculture will distribute, in the French market, some of the most innovative Valagro biostimulant solutions, specifically designed to enhance crop productivity and quality, as well as to meet the nutritional needs of row crops and French wine grape varieties. For InVivo Agriculture, this agreement is aligned with its 2025 strategy, which has defined the offer of topnotch biocontrol and biostimulants products to their cooperatives and farmers as a top priority. InVivo was advised by Laurent Vermer from Future Food Partners in the structuring and negotiation of the agreement.
Laurent Martel, General Manager of InVivo Agriculture said: “This year after the acquisition of Bioline, the specialist of biocontrol in greenhouses, this agreement with Valagro reinforces our commitment to becoming a leader in the supply of biocontrol solutions and biostimulant in the French, European and North American market. The co-development and distribution agreement allows both companies to strenghten the offer of sustainable and innovative solutions to the benefit of the French growers.” Valagro, a global leader in the production and commercialization of biostimulants and specialty
nutrients, has always been committed to helping farmers to do more with less in providing innovative and effective solutions for both nutrition and care of plants. Every year, the Valagro Group invests more than 4% of its annual turnover in its R&D efforts to develop new solutions, focusing on biostimulants and the biological sector (biocontrol and biofertilizers) in particular. Mr. Giuseppe Natale, CEO of Valagro, commented: "We believe that it is critically important to offer concrete, innovative and more personalized solutions, which meet the real needs of our customers and InVivo is a strategic partner to achieve this ambitious objective. Mite® G-System’ started in early 2014 in the Netherlands, Belgium and France. Biobest researcher Juliette Pijnakker is very satisfied with the steady progress of this biocontrol strategy in cut roses. “It’s a unique strategy and there are different reasons for its strong performance.” says Juliette. “Euseius gallicus is well adapted to roses and it can establish a strong population before the pest even appears with the support of our NutrimiteTM food supplement. Recent work shows there is yet another strong factor in favour of gallicus. Biobest researcher Dominiek Vangansbeke proved the capacity of the predator to tackle thrips at the egg stage. Recalling the history of the new development, Juliette explains that this species of predatory mite was found in 2011 in a commercial greenhouse on
Rosa cv. Red Naomi. Extensive cage and field trials on roses were carried out in the Netherlands and Belgium. The predatory mite’s potential to control western flower thrips Frankliniella occidentalis and greenhouse whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum was well documented. It was also shown to contribute to spider mite control. “The real breakthrough came when Biobest introduced Nutrimite™, a food supplement based on pollen of the bulrush Typha angustifolia L. in 2013. With a biweekly application of 500 grams per hectare when pest pressure is low, Euseius gallicus reaches a density of 1 to 2 predatory mites per rose leaf. With A. swirskii it’s rare to even reach a level of 1 predatory mite per 3 leaves,” explains Juliette.
Interpoma 2016 – tomorrow’s apple looks at new varieties and new markets Respecting a trend that was already evident last year, in 2016 the production of apples in the European Union will see a decrease of about 3% compared to 2015. Among the main reasons for this are the frosts during the winter in several areas of Central Europe, including Slovenia, Austria, Croatia and Hungary. Overall, in the 21 main European apple producing countries (including Britain), a production of 12.005 million tonnes is forecast for 2016, compared to 12.325 million tonnes in the previous year. These are some of the figures revealed on 4 August in Hamburg during the 2016 edition of Prognosfruit, the

annual itinerant conference organised by WAPA (World Apple and Pear Association). Given the substantial hold of the sector there will be a normal production situation in Europe on the eve of Interpoma, the only event in the world dedicated exclusively to the
apple sector, taking place from 24 to 26 November 2016 in the Bolzano trade fair district. Regarding the main producing countries, the 2016 forecast for Poland gives an upward trend of around +4%, from 3.979 million to 4.150 million tonnes, whereas Italy is

perfectly in line with 2015, with an expected 2.282 million tonnes (approx.). The negative forecast for France sticks out, with a -7% compared to last year, but then moving back just above the levels of two years ago. In particular, WAPA figures for the transalpine country give 1.564 million tonnes, compared to 1.674 million in 2015. The opposite is true for Germany which, on the eve of the 2016 campaign, sees a forecast of +8%, with 1.052 million tonnes compared to 973,000 tonnes last year. In sharp recovery is also Spain, with a +6% on last year. This means 509,000 tonnes, compared to 482,000 tonnes in 2015. The situation is very critical in general in various parts of Central Europe, because of the frosts last winter. There are negative signs with double figures in several countries such as Austria (-88%), Slovenia (-83%), Croatia (-65%), Slovakia (-58%) and the Czech Republic (-28%). But also -20% in Portugal, whereas Great Britain maintains the levels of last year, or slightly higher (+3%). Operators meeting at Interpoma 2016 will therefore discuss how to address, in years of normal production (2015 and 2016 appear to be very similar from this standpoint) and without excessive stocks to be disposed of, problematic situations like the continuation of the Russian embargo, which has almost completely cut trade ties with Western Europe, and the dynamics that various traditional markets are undergoing, where the new generations have definitely reduced their demand for apples. “Today it’s not so much the needs of consumers that have SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2016

changed, but rather their age”, says Kurt Werth, organiser of the "The Apple in the World” conference, to be held during Interpoma 2016. “For example, in Germany, - says Werth - a traditional outlet market for many apple producers, the older generation has not been completely replaced by the new one, inasmuch as young people consume fewer apples. We therefore had to look for new markets, such as North Africa and others.” Then there are the problems of competition between East and West. Werth again points out: “Even if, for Western Europe, exports of apples to Russia were of relative importance, with the continuing embargo Poland is pushing increasingly towards the West. I was recently in Russia for three weeks, where I visited several cities, and in the supermarkets I only saw New Zealand apples.”

The Foundation has committed $5.2 million to Root Capital over five years to support early-stage agricultural businesses that generate transformational impact in rural communities in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Senegal. “With Root Capital we will help to bring much-needed financing and capacity building to businesses in West Africa that work with farmers otherwise excluded from the formal economy,” said Ann Miles, Director of Financial Inclusion and Youth Livelihoods at The MasterCard Foundation. “We see this as a good avenue to help increase incomes and opportunities for 4,000 employees of agricultural businesses, 300,000 smallholder farmers, and over two million farm family members.” Without access to predictable markets for their crops, small-scale rural farmers are often forced to accept lower prices for their crops and find themselves trapped in a cycle of poverty. obvious to the customer. Therefore Joordens Zaden gives high contamination guarantees for all its products, sometimes even of 0%. To comply with the high quality requirements, Joordens cleans all components within the production process thoroughly after each product change. The forty-year old screw conveyor that transports the seeds into the mixer was always difficult to clean and took one and a half hours to clean each time. As product changes are made at least once to sometimes three or four times each day, the screw conveyor was the limiting factor in the production process. To increase the capacity of its production process, Joordens looked for a new transport system that would enable it to increase the capacity of its production process and reduce cleaning costs. The new transport system had to be fast and easy to clean and have a minimum capacity of 75 m3 per hour. Extremely gentle transport, without the slightest chance of damage, was a requirement. The system also had to be suitable for a minimum height of 8 metres.

When dust comes into contact with an ignition source, such as sparks, in an oxygen rich environment, there is a risk of explosion, and that is exactly what happens when the grinding process for grains and organic materials is started or stopped in a hammer mill. Van Aarsen develops and manufactures machines for the production of compound feeds and premixes for the animal feed industry. It is also a leader in developing new techniques for minimising explosion risk without compromising the efficiency and quality of the grinding process. As such, Van Aarsen has now introduced an innovative feeding device with an integrated heavy parts separator for metal objects, stones, and other heavy objects. The heavy parts separator detects such objects and removes them to prevent them from being fed into the hammer mill and causing sparks. Van Aarsen has optimised its heavy parts separator by automating the removal of metal objects and stones and by the combination of this removal with the screen exchange process. ALYASEEN AGRI. AT THE FOREFRONT OF SAUDI AGRICULTURE THE CHALLENGES AND THE SOLUTIONS
T
he Saudi agricultural market has reached a high level of development and sophistication but still there are new challenges that should be overcome. The government in its endeavor to find a delicate balance between food security and water security has restructured the agricultural sector by suspending its buying of local wheat, by encouraging large dairy projects to bring the fodder from out of the country sources, by handsomely subsidizing of up to 70% of the cost of new irrigation technologies, by prohibiting export of melon, watermelon, potatoes and onion, and finally

he review of machinery and equipment for agriculture and grounds keeping, EIMA, set for next November 9 to 13 in Bologna, is confirming its international calibration. Among some 1,900 exhibiting industries appearing more than 40 of them are arriving from abroad along with business people from 140 countries. Moreover, the event is drawing 80 official delegations from 70 countries. The International Office of FederUnacoma - the Italian Agricultural Machinery Manufacturers Federation, in the National Manufacturers Confederation, organizing the event - is collaborating with the ICE Foreign Trade Agency on special programs for foreign delegations of groups of business people from around Europe, the Americas,

the African continent, the Asian countries as well as Australia. The plans for these foreign delegations call for a heavy schedule of meetings with exhibiting industries organized according to the special interests of business people in various types of products. The 2014 edition of EIMA International featured some 3,000 meetings set up for foreign delegations and those scheduled for the upcoming edition will be held in a specific area and include services provided by interpreters and commercial consultants. The larger number of delegations arriving for this year's edition is 80 organized by ICE and 10 more outside the ICE program compared to a total of the 60 official ICE
delegations in 2014 so a further substantial increase in B2B meetings is expected to be planned for the upcoming EIMA. In addition to these contacts planned ahead of time there will be an enormous group of individual business people with their own agendas for meetings in the stands and the specialized salons, EIMA Components, EIMA Green, EIMA Energy and EIMA M.i.A., to deal directly with the technologies presented for all types of agricultural operations among some 50,000 models exhibited in the 14 merchandise categories and the specialized salons, EIMA Components, EIMA Green, EIMA Energy and EIMA M.i.A. Arriving for the 2014 edition were 39,000 single business people attending among the 236,000 visitors registered. Also many of the conferences organized for the exposition will take on an international slant, beginning with an international assembly on the issue Agricultural Mechanization: the New European Agenda organized by FederUnacoma and CEMA, representing European Agricultural Manufacturers interests, and the world Agrievolution association. The conference will be held in the morning of November 9th with political figures and representatives from European Union institutions in attendance. SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2016

regaining trust at a time when the sector is facing decisive challenges, and putting forward a prospective vision which opens up new perspectives, through the central theme for 2017: “Being a farmer in 10 years”. As for the concept of innovation, which is part of SIMA's DNA, it will be an integral part of the special events, talks and meetings which will run throughout the forthcoming edition.” AN EDITION HELD UNDER THE BANNER OF SHARING As a meeting place for all types of agriculture and all sizes of farm, SIMA's mission is to federate and pass on solutions and technologies for highperformance and sustainable development of agriculture all over the world. In this regard, the notion “producing more and better” will
take centre stage at the show through several events, among which: the SIMAAfrican Summit, an international conference dealing with sustainable mechanisation, echoing the agreement signed by the European Agricultural machinery industry association CEMA and the FAO; the SIMA Dealers' Day-ting, a day dedicated to exhibitors and dealers from around the world featuring convivial occasions to meet up; and SIMAAgTech, a programme of events revolving around technology to support the sustainable intensification of farming. INNOVATION FIRST #2: BEING A FARMER IN 10 YEARS The next edition of SIMA will more than ever before be aligned with the topics that matter to the sector, thanks to the theme “Being a farmer in 10 years” which will be developed into four areas: digital, genomics, ecological economics and robotics. This theme will also come to life at the show in the form of several highlights such as the “Future-oriented Space”, a laboratory for new ideas in farming; the projects of students from French and international engineering schools, international meetings to discuss the challenges of farming specialities, the portraits of innovative farmers and the Startup Village… not to mention the Innovation Gallery which will display the 2017 vintage of the SIMA Innovation Awards. INTERVIEW
PLANTER BAGS
WANGARA HORTICULTURAL SUPPLIES: LARGEST SUPPLIER OF EASY-FILL™ PLANTER BAGS AND TOP QUALITY HORTICULTURAL PRODUCTS TO THE MIDDLE EAST Geoff Stowe Director Wangara Horticultural Supplies
Q
: Why are your products so highly valued in the Middle East market? The original design of our products was made with the Australian market in mind. After visiting the Middle East, we found that the growers there had many of the same challenges that Australian growers were facing. Our products stood up to the harsh and extreme climate in the Middle East, just as they did in Australia. We use only top grade virgin materials and our UV additives are of the highest quality available. Cheap imitations do not hold up in the extreme climate and do not last. What may seem like a bargain buy, will cost more in labour and investment to replant and replace. Q: What makes WHS an industry leader? With over 18 years of experience with a product that we innovated and perfected, customers have come to rely on our industry knowledge and customer support. Universities and government agencies have entrusted Easy-Fill™ for many years. Our customer base has grown to include Europe, North and South America, the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific. Our ability to adapt and service our product to meet all of these different climate conditions is makes WHS truly an industry leader. Q: How long have you had a presence in the Middle East? Our first visit to the Middle East was 18 years ago. Since then, we have cultivated a diverse customer base, helping establish many valued, long-held

relationships. We have been present at many major Trade Shows in the region sharing our knowledge and experience. We make it a priority to personally visit the local nurseries and greenhouses to better understand our customer's needs. Q: Does your company offer any guarantees on its products? Easy-Fill™ planter bags are recognised around the world for their dependability and manufacturer's guarantee. The company believes in manufacturing a superior product with personal customer service that includes adapting the design for different environments and individual needs. Q: What other products do you offer? We support the Horticultural Industry from the very beginning with products such as propagation tubes and seedling trays. We have a wide variety of these to suit any species of plants and trees. Some of our best sellers into the region are our flower tubes and specialised planter bags for date palms. Our new product line of portable hedge bags and tree collars have also been well received this year. WHS remains committed to the Middle East market through expert advice and ongoing product development. WHS Australia, thank you for taking the time and giving us some insights into the unique benefits that your products have provided us here in the Middle East. It's clear to see why Wangara Horticultural Supplies is recognised as the largest supplier of superior horticultural products in our region. SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2016

he company “Société Plastique Innovation Distribution” (S.P.I.D), located in France, is actually recognized, by its customers, as the specialist in long life propagation trays. Its skilled experience, built over the past two decades, thanks to the advices of the most technical plant raisers, has contributed to develop a full range of sustainable cultivation containers. The injection molded trays from SPID, are in fact, premium quality made, and designed to efficiently answer to the main constraints of the plants producers. In a global vision of reusability, SPID develops multi-cells tray that are: mechanized (at the sowing stage as well as the transplanting stage), Washable (made of polypropylene the trays can be disinfected, and perfectly cleaned),

years (by reusing the trays on each production cycle, the accumulated costs saving after few years, enables plant raisers to invest in a better mechanization…). Moreover, SPID trays are designed to insure a good roots development (no roots twizzling), a homogeneous plant growth, and a perfect crop removal. The cell shape and generally the cell characteristics are, according to SPID, a sinequanone condition to get healthy and strong young plants. Nowadays, the French
company benefits of a sufficient number of plugs trays to cover the plant nurseries needs, anywhere around the world, and tries to advise as possible on specific or polyvalent references, depending of the customer request. Nonetheless, SPID has recently launched two new references: the EURO BOX and the EURO 384 cells tray, which present the advantages of the last mold generation. The EURO BOX, with its pyramidal bottom part, better apportions the water on the surface, avoids possible moisture, and facilitates the growth of homogeneous plants. The EURO 384 cavities tray, initially designed for the cultivation of processing tomatoes, has a good ratio density/quality, and can be used with normal peat, compressed peat, or plugs. indirect air heater which runs on natural gas, LPG or diesel. The amount of heat required depends not only on the type of crop, but also upon the amount of heat loss from the structure. It usually occurs by all three modes of heat transfer: conduction, convection and radiation. Furthermore, other factors may affect or influence the heat loss such as the age condition of the greenhouse and the ventilation system adopted. After check of all of these fundamental conditions for the optimal management of the environment, the best solution recommended to heat your greenhouse is still combiTERM: the indirect air heater whose main characteristic is its application versatility. The unique stainless steel combustion chamber guarantees an efficient heat exchange between the exhaust smoke and the clean air released in the surrounding environment. of the Middle East. Andrew Cotterill, Managing Director of the company, commented: “We've been supplying to UK farms for almost 30 years and have built up a reputation for high quality products as well as excellent service. I come from a farming background myself so I understand what our customers want and our products reflect this.” In the UK, Cotterill Civils is one of the leading suppliers of water storage solutions to the agricultural sector. The company supplies its products all over the world - they are designed to be delivered on pallets or containers for easy transportation. Andrew continued: “The Middle East is a fantastic market for us as there is a real need for high quality water storage solutions that can be quickly and easily erected. We've found that the farms over here are keen to invest in the best technology and products so will look further afield. We get lots of farm managers from the

Ultimately, they want products they can trust and that will last them years to come.” In particular, the company says it has seen a real demand for its large galvanised steel tanks. These provide a simple and cost effective solution for storing large volumes of water. Quick and easy to install, these tanks are incredibly strong so will last for decades. Another popular product is its flexible tanks. Made from Elastomer or Plastomer, these innovative tanks provide farms with a much cheaper solution for storing large volumes of water. Ready to use on deployment, they are fully collapsible and easily transportable. Andrew added: “The current exchange rate means that farmers in the Gulf can purchase our products at an even more favourable rate. There hasn't been a better time to benefit from high quality UK manufacturing.” For more information, see the advertisement on page 12. SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2016

he “CULTIRAPID PRO” is a combination machine from MA/AG for working the soil and the preparation of the seedbed under a vision of a conservative agriculture for the use as primary tool under the techniques of the minimum tillage. This equipment represents a further interesting variant of the “CULTIRAPID” machine, already well known from the customers from several years for its innovative characteristics and for its versatility. The equipment can be trailed or half brought and it is composed by a main frame with a monobeam structure where there are different working elements. The use of the new
“modulate” frame, with central wheels, permits to reduce the total length of the machine so to encourage the use in the field and the road traffic. The machine is currently used on different types of work: on chopped corn stalks and also on corn stalks and stubble of wheat or rice standing, without the least clogging of the working elements. In both case, we obtain the complete cut of the stalk and of the root and the mixing with the top layers of the soil. The advantages derived from the use of this tool is to follow the approach of the minimum tillage with all the characteristics of the method (surface layer working only,
best water development, reduction of the phenomenon of soil erosion, savings in terms of fuel and manpower, speed of working execution). The high working speed (10-20 Km/h) permits to operate with greater speed reducing the processing costs, granting an hourly output of 4-7 hectares. The working depth of the anchors is 20/30 cm (max), while the one of the discs and the star group is 5-15 cm. The equipment is available in the version with half-brought frame or trailed and hydraulically foldable at 2,55 m for the transport on road. The working width change from 4,00 m to 6,00 m, for tractors with HP from 200 to 300 HP.

ase IH unveiled an autonomous concept vehicle at the Farm Progress Show in Boone, Iowa. The concept vehicle is a cabless Case IH row crop tractor that can operate autonomously with a wide range of field implements. “In many parts of the world, finding skilled labor during peak use seasons is a constant challenge for our customers,” said Case IH Brand President Andreas Klauser. “While we offer auto-steering and

telematics on our equipment today for remote management of farm machinery and employees, this autonomous tractor concept demonstrates how our customers and their employees could remotely monitor and control machines directly. This technology will offer our customers greater operational efficiencies for tasks such as tillage, planting, spraying and harvesting.” Klauser explained that the concept was created to validate the technology and to collect
customer feedback regarding their interest and need for future autonomous products for their operations. “It is very exciting for us to explore the possibilities that this technology can provide to our customers. We look forward to getting their input regarding this concept and how it can help them achieve new production efficiencies,” said Klauser. concept on an existing Case IH Magnum tractor with reimagined styling. The vehicle was built for a fully interactive interface to allow for remote monitoring of preprogrammed operations. The onboard system automatically accounts for implement widths and plots the most efficient paths depending on the terrain, obstructions and other machines in use in the same field. The remote operator can supervise and adjust pathways via a desktop computer or portable tablet interface. Through the use of radar, lidar (light imaging, detection, and ranging) and onboard video cameras, the vehicle can sense stationary or moving obstacles in its path and will stop on its own until the operator, notified by audio and visual alerts, assigns a new path. The vehicle will also stop immediately if GPS signal or position data is lost, or if the manual stop button is pushed. Machine tasks can also be modified in real time with via remote interface or automatic weather warnings. AFS Global Product Marketing Manager, Rob Zemenchik explained that autonomous tractor operation brings together the latest in guidance, telemetry, data sharing, and agronomic management to offer farm

managers more control, monitoring capabilities and cost savings. “A farm manager can supervise the activities of multiple machines via a mobile tablet interface while he tends to other tasks or even operates another vehicle,” said Zemenchik. “Multiple autonomous tractors can work as one fleet or simultaneously in multiple sub-fleets assigned to separate fields, each assigned with preprogrammed maps and prescriptions. So you could have one tractor pulling a chisel plow followed closely by another one operating a planter. The opportunities for efficiency are substantial.” Although the autonomous vehicle is presently considered only as a concept tractor, Zemenchik said the technology could function just as well in a standard cabbed tractor where it could use realtime weather and satellite data to optimally apply crop inputs
such as nitrogen, herbicides, or fungicides. “These enhancements really become interesting for our customers when weather comes into play,” said Zemenchik. “Because if it starts to rain in one field, the tractor will automatically stop what it's doing and head over to another field that is dry to work on that provided it can access that field via private roads.” Prior to the concept's unveiling, company executives presented a video demonstration of the tractor tilling and planting on land in the Southeastern United States earlier this summer. CNH Industrial collaborated with its long-standing technology provider Autonomous Solutions Incorporated, ASI, a Utahbased company that is the industry leader in off-road autonomous solutions, in the development of this concept autonomous technology.

lignite open cast mining Garzweiler II). Humintech used to produce its humic acids based products in three different areas and now it joined them in one area in Grevenbroich. In this way, Humintech has the possibility to optimize its logistics and supply its products faster to the customers worldwide. The new high technology production line enables Humintech to increase the production capacity to about 50,000 t/year humic acids based products in granular form (Perlhumus®), 10,000 t/year humic acids based products in water soluble form (Powhumus®) and 30,000 cbm/year of humic acids based products in liquid form (Liqhumus®). The new production line will enable the Humintech team to maintain and increase the quality of its humic acids based products and to manufacture several new products based on humic acids
in combination with other organic fertilizers and biostimulants. Beside the current product line the company will update its new product range to more than 50 different humic acids and organic matter based products within the next two years, which will contribute to increase the quantity and quality of plant production. Humintech takes the best German oxidized Lignite resources' (Leonardite) with high humic /fulvic acids quantity and uses the high technical production methods to get the high humic acid quality. Furthermore Humintech is active in research, development and industrial production of humic matter and humic acids for agriculture, animal feed, pharmaceutical and construction industries, veterinary medicine and environmental applications such as water purification and soil remediations. SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2016
HUMIC ACID
Humintech produces a large quantity of granulate humic acid as Perlhumus, water soluble humic acid as Powhumus and liquid humic acid as Liqhumus and 6% Fehumate as Humiron. Humitech started the production of humic acid with various microorganisms as antagonist of several soils born disease. BioHealth is one successful antagonist to soil born fungi. BioHealth® TH/BS WSG DESCRIPTION BioHealth® TH/BS WSG is a blend of selected Trichoderma harzianum and Bacillus subtilis strains, humic acids and seaweed extract. Trichoderma harzianum and Bacillus subtilis are antagonist to soil borne pathogens like e.g. Phythium, Phytophthora, Rhizoctonia or Fusarium, whose hyphens and organs can be disposed by Trichoderma's comprehensive enzyme tools. Thus Trichoderma suppresses the spreading of these pathogens. Bacillus subtilis have evolved numerous mechanisms for both attack of other fungi or bacteria and for enhancing plant and root growth. During a culture Bacillus subtilis nourishes on the root exudates in the rhizosphere and thus builds a biological protective barrier against soil borne pathogens. In latent affected plant material BioHealth® TH/BS WSG remains ineffective, due to the reason that the antagonist cannot follow the parasite into the inside of the plant. Therefore BioHealth® TH/BS WSG has to be regarded as a soil conditioner or rather a plant intensifier and under no circumstances as a fungicide against soil pathological fungi. SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2016
ORIGIN BioHealth® TH/BS WSG is obtained through alkaline extraction from German Leonardite (highly oxidized lignite), high quality isolated
and selected Trichoderma harzanium fungus, high quality isolated and selected Bacillus subtilis strains and extracted from Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed.

ANIMAL HEALTH
HEALTH EFFECTS ON REPRODUCTION IN DAIRY CATTLE
M Dr. Ammara Fiaz, DVM, MPhil
ilk production is an essential agricultural produce in almost all the countries in the world. Up to a billion people in the world live on farms and make a livelihood through dairy and dairy produce. It is an indispensible part of the global food system and plays a significant role in sustaining development in rural areas. It is a well-known fact that the dairy industry is actively contributing to the economy of a number of communities, regions and countries. There is a growing demand around the world for
globalizing this industry there by increasing scope and intensity of world trade in dairy products. Global Investment must be considered in to the latest breeding and management techniques of dairy animals so that a sustainable form of economic gain can be achieved. Therefore, in the Middle East, an increased avenue of investments in this sector will ensure food security and viable economic gain. The objective of health management is to ensure optimal care and welfare of dairy cattle to in turn check productivity losses due to mismanagement. Only healthy dairy animals lead to healthy dairy products, which in turn leads to good economic gains. Basics of Reproduction in Cattle: The period of oestrous cycling occurs every 21 days in a cow after the period of postpartum anaestrous and for heifers that reach puberty (first ovulation). This means that these estrus cycles give a heifer or cow a chance to get pregnant about every 21 days. There are various best management practices that can be followed in order to ensure that this cycle is taken most advantage of in producing optimum results in dairy production. Body Conditioning Score is one of the most essential ways of continually monitoring Optimal health and
50

productivity in dairy cattle. This system of scoring (BCS) is directly related to livestock reproduction. If BCS is low or poor, the dairy animal will not attain its peak productivity. BCS is also an indicator of the amount of energy stored in the dairy animal. Optimum BCS, ensures that energy levels are maintained well enough in the animal to ensure good productivity. The high-energy transition period for dairy cows, three weeks before and after calving, is of utmost importance, as their metabolic needs increase dramatically during this time. The animal needs to maintain sufficient energy levels in order to cope with this critical period. The performance of dairy cows during the rest of lactation is directly related to how well they cope with this high-energy requirement during the transition phase. This has direct effect on disease and reproduction. Essentially all dairy cows experience a period of insulin resistance, reduced feed intake, negative energy balance, hypocalcemia, decreased immune function, and bacterial contamination of the uterus just before or during the weeks after calving. A third of dairy cows can be affected by some type of metabolic and infectious diseases in early lactation. Routine, proactive actions, veterinary observations, or analysis are intended to accurately and efficiently SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2016
ANIMAL HEALTH
provide early detection of problems, to provide an opportunity for investigation and intervention in order to limit the consequences and costs of health problems and reduce animal performance or welfare. Methods of early detection include monitoring of disease and culling records, feed intake, milk production, body condition, and simple metabolic tests. Genetic improvement of dairy cows has markedly increased milk yield over the last three decades. Increased production has been associated with reduced conception rate. Because conception rate in dairy heifers has remained higher, the metabolic demands of higher production may be related to the decline in reproductive performance in cows. During early lactation, increasing dietary intake fails to keep pace with rising milk production. The resultant negative energy balance and rate of mobilization of body reserves appear directly related to the postpartum interval to first ovulation and lower conception rate. Delays in the onset of normal ovarian activity, thus limiting the number of estrous cycles before breeding, may account for the observed decrease in fertility. Negative energy balance probably acts similarly to under nutrition and may manifest in delayed ovarian activity by impinging on pulsatile secretion of LH. Lower availability of glucose and insulin may also decrease LH pulsatility or limit ovarian responsiveness to gonadotropins. Alternatively, release of endogenous opioids in association with increasing feed intake or other lactational hormone responses may SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2016
provide neural or pituitary inhibition of the pulsatile LH production that is requisite for ovarian follicular development. Correlations between reproductive traits and measures of milk yield indicate that higher yield is associated phenotypically and genetically with reduced reproductive performance in lactating cows. Numerous recent studies have reported that reproductive performance is compromised, primarily through delayed ovarian activity and reduced conception rates, by the demands of high milk yield. However, daily managerial decisions to obtain efficient reproductive performance have considerable impact. Management can offset depression in fertility, because high yielding herds often achieve the fewest days open. Different techniques are used worldwide to improve and maximize production through reproduction in cattle keeping their health as top priority. An increase in research and modern techniques in the Middle Eastern and GCC countries can increase economic gains in this sector. Artificial Insemination Synchronization of Estrus Embryo Transfer Sexed semen In vitro fertilization Cloning Local dairy farmers can also be empowered to increase their abilities to perform better in the dairy sector by following simple protocols. In a dairy farm, keeping control of these
parameters, farmers can maintain the health and reproduction of the herd. Schedule farm visits Health services and individual emergencies Planned, traditional and technical activities Quality control programs Performance Targets Keeping Records Health Research and production problems.

requirements of modern breeders, and fully complies to European standards for animal welfare. Birds are housed in a healthy environment and have controlled access to a scratching area, where they are able to perform their natural dust bathing behaviour. First class eggs High numbers of first class eggs is the key to success in breeder housing. Excellent egg quality is guaranteed with the integrated nest box that closes at night, which prevents contamination by
the birds. Possible out-ofnest eggs roll to the nest automatically, as the slats are sloping. The manure falls onto a manure belt and is transported out of the house frequently. Ammonia and fine dust levels are extremely low, improving a healthy climate for both birds and employees. Next to a perfect climate, the birds are housed on hygienic slats. This reduces the contact of birds with manure, thus improving bio-security, and reducing exposure to pathogens.
