Ten things you need to know about World Pool for 2023

1. World Pool was created by Hong Kong Jockey Club and brings together racing fans from 28 nations, so everyone is effectively betting into one pool creating huge liquidity. It’s like the EuroMillions but for horseracing. Pools punters have never had it so good.

2. World Pool in the UK and Ireland is operated by the Tote. You can bet with the Tote at tote.co.uk or at tote. ie, or on the Tote App, at a racecourse, or with a bookmaker as most offer Tote bets in shops and online.

3. Without bookmakers’ commission to pay, the Tote can offer the best value to their direct customers via the Tote website. Here, they operate Tote+ (Tote Plus), giving an extra 10% on every winning dividend – that means a £100 win becomes £110 on tote.co.uk. In addition, Tote Guarantee* ensures the Tote win price will also match or exceed the industry SP, so Tote customers will never be short-changed on winning bets.

4. The pool betting model means the Tote is agnostic about results, so unlike fixed odds bookmakers, the Tote welcomes winning customers

5. The international nature of World Pool means there is great value to be found across markets. For example, Hong Kong racing fans will tend to bet on jockeys they recognise, so their price will shorten. In turn, other runners can end up over-priced.

6. For 2023 there are seven bet types included in World Pool. These are Win, Place, Exacta (first two in the correct order), Trifecta (1st 2nd and 3rd in correct order), Quinella (first two in either order), Swinger (two in the first three) and the Treble (pick the first horse home in three nominated races).

7. 2023 is the fifth year of World Pool with the overall pool across UK/Ire World Pool days growing to £521 million in liquidity in 2022, compared to £19 million in 2018, prior to the start of World Pool.

8. The Derby at Epsom recorded the single highest day of turnover at approximately £6.8 million.

9. There will be 18 World Pool days on British and Irish racing in 2023, including QIPCO 2000 Guineas Day, Al Shaqab Lockinge, Epsom Derby Day, Royal Ascot, Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Day, QICPO King George Day, first three days of the Qatar Goodwood Festival, the first three days of the Sky Bet Ebor Festival, Longines Irish Champions Day and British Champions Day. These racecourses, working with HKJC, are all helping to further internationalise the sport, which results in a greater shop window for British and Irish racing.

10. World Pool means bigger financial returns to British and Irish racing through additional income to racecourses. These payments support prize money and generate further investment, helping create longterm sustainable funding the for the sport.
