A Francis Wenham’s Prototype Binocular Microscope, English, dated from the Beck records as purchased on 2nd September 1853 by F. H. Wenham, signed to the foot ‘Smith & Beck 6 Coleman St. London 759’, the microscope is recorded by the Beck records as the ‘Improved Large’, standing on three feet with a circular central disk supporting the twin tapered columns, at the top of the columns are trunnions supporting the limb with a friction lock, at the base is a triangular bar on which slides a collar supporting the large plano-concave mirror on a gimbaled arm, above this is a later fitted ( possibly by Wenham) mechanical substage collar with rack and pinion focusing and screw X-Y control, large square mechanical stage with X-Y control with screw lock to rear, limb with later fitted fine focus control, binocular arrangement adapted from a monocular tube with interocular adjustment via rackwork and slot above objective thread for prism drawer, in a fitted mahogany case with two fitted mahogany cases of accessories, eyepieces and objectives, 47cm tall £20,000 - £30,000

The Wenham Connection Wenham, Francis Herbert (1824, Kensington – 1908) was a British marine engineer who studied the problem of human flight and later became involved in optics and the improvement of the microscope. He is credited with inventing the ‘Wenham binocular’ microscope, a binocular arrangement copied by almost all 19th century microscope makers. He joined Ross & Co. as an adviser following the death of Thomas Ross in 1870 where he designed his magnus opus - the Ross-Wenham Radial microscope, the largest binocular microscope of the Victorian era.

This instrument, as previously mentioned, was originally bought (according to the Beck records by F. H. Wenham) on 2nd September 1853. According to the letter that accompanies the microscope this is Wenham’s prototype binocular microscope which was first exhibited at a meeting of the Microscopical Society of London on the 12th of December 1860 (i). The handwritten letter written and signed by Wenham states: This is the original Wenham’s Binocular arrangement made by F. H. Wenham and fitted by him to his large Smith & Beck microscope, these parts being necessarily detachable having been the first ever adapted. Also a prism for including the full aperture of high power objectives. This letter is further accompanied with an extract from the “Intellectual Observer” (1866) titled ‘Mr. Wenham’s New Binocular’ which appears to discuss in detail the high power prism that comes with this instrument. Wenham’s highpower prism was also the subject of a detailed report in the transactions of the Microscopical Society of London in 1866 (ii).

The accessory set has a 1/25inch objective in a can engraved Wenham and dated 1856. This very lens appears to have been the subject of praise in the 1857 Microscopical Society of London’s President’s address by the then president, George Shadbolt. It appears to be at the time the most powerful objective ever made.

Provenance: 1993 - Sold at Christie’s South Kensington, Engineering and Scientific Works of Art, Instruments and Models, 6th May 1993, Lot 183 and formed part of the ‘Jacob Collection - an Important Swiss Collector’.

1939 – Private sale between Charles A Smith and Mr Alan Connelly in whose collection it remained until his death.

1911 - The microscope was sold by Dollond & Co in 1911 just three years after Wenham’s death in 1908.

A Benjamin Martin Solar Compendium, English, c.1770, signed to the solar microscope plate ‘MARTIN LONDON’ and to the microscope foot ‘B. MARTIN Invt. LONDON N.16’, the large sharkskin covered wooden case opens to reveal the outfit in fitted green silk velvet, the microscope stands on a Y shaped folding base with a turned pillar supporting the square column, a rack is cut into the back of the column with a wheel at the back of the stage for course focusing, a locking wheel at the side of the state engages a screw fine focus mechanism, at the top of the microscope is a folding limb that can also be rotated by removing a steel locking pin, the limb can take the compound body or the arm for the slide of simple objectives, the solar microscope is made up of the mounting plate and mirror assembly, into the screws the condenser with mounting tube, finally the screw barrel microscope screws into this, the microscope can be used in conjunction with the strip of lenses or the screw in lenses, case width 34cm, the set is impressively complete with only the No.1 microscope objective missing its lens, some old water damage to the rear of the case with some loss to the sharkskin, the hinges have lost their pins, one hook is missing from the front, case 34cm wide £10,000 - £15,000 16

A Powell & Lealand No.3 Binocular Outfit with Provenance, English, dated 1843, signed in script to the top of the bar-limb ‘Powell & Lealand, Makers, London’, of standard No.3 construction, standing on a large lacquered tripod base with circular feet each with cork pads, trunnions to the top supporting the body, with large plano-concave mirror to the base as typically supported on one side on a sliding collar, above which collar, with a Turrel-type mechanical stage with X-Y control, main course focus to rear of body, bar-limb incorporating fine focus lever mechanism to the side, nose piece with prism blanking plate, limb with threaded boss to accept binocular or monocular tubes, the microscope comes with the following accessories in a fitted mahogany case: A 1in objective, Lieberkühn & can A 1/2in objective, Lieberkühn & can A 1/4in objective, Lieberkühn & can A 1/8in objective & can A high power eyepiece A pair of medium power eyepieces A pair of low power eyepieces A pair of eyepiece extension collars An achromatic substage condenser signed Three darkwells Two liveboxes A leather case with a binocular prism A substage wheel of stops Stage forceps a stage bulls-eye condenser A pair of binocular bodytubes In a fitted mahogany case with key Provenance: The microscope comes with a calling card for ‘Sir Thomas Watson, 16 Henrietter St, Cavendish Square’, to the rear of the card in pen is written ‘Bequeathed to Dr George Johnson’. This claim is backed up with a copy of Sir Thomas Watsons original will which states “I give my microscope by Powell & Lealand to Dr George Johnson of Savile Row, London” Sir Thomas Watson, 1st Baronet, (1792 – 11 December 1882) was a leading British physician, he studied medicine at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and Edinburgh and graduated M.D. from Cambridge University in 1825. He was appointed physician to the Middlesex hospital in 1827 and was professor of clinical medicine at the University of London before transferring to King’s College as professor of Forensic Medicine he also became Queen Victoria’s private doctor and was created a baronet in 1866.

Another calling card accompanies the microscope which states ‘Bequeathed by Sir G Johnson to Sir N. Tsard and by him to K. C. H. medical school’

An Early Crystal Radio Loose Coupler, from the estate of Adolf Isenthal, an early and unusual form, possibly a prototype, of what appears to be a loose coupler from a crystal radio, constructed on an oak frame, the main large primary coil with copper wire wrapped around small wooden pegs on the outside, the secondary smaller coil constructed similarly but on a helical thread turned via the large wheel at the end, the main winding has a selector with stepped positions on the coil, tubes made of an early plastic material, main supports made from Vulcanite with brass fittings, faults and damage (AF) Adolf Isenthal, was an electrical engineer who immigrated to Britain in 1889 from Germany. He was an early supplier of X-ray equipment and, in 1898 along with and Charles Potzler set up ‘Isenthal, Potzler & Co.’ at 85 Mortimer Street, London. The company survived until 1925 when it absorbed by the Dubilier Condenser Co. Isenthal also supplied Guglielmo Marconi with electrical equipment. £200 - £400

A Prisoner of War Home-Made Camera, circa 1943; this camera appears to be unique and is reputed to have been made by an Italian prisoner of war in a camp in Perthshire; its origins remain a mystery as it has so many refinements that it almost appears to be a ‘labour of love’ by a skilled craftsman; the lens and shutter are of quite high quality and have been removed from an unidentified old camera of about 1909 and may have been one made by ICA of Dresden; the camera uses 35mm film wound from one cassette into another and the sprocket over which it winds rotates the pointer on the dial at the top, two frames per complete rotation; it also operates a frame counter, which can be re-set and the lens of the tiny folding viewfinder comes from another camera. There are two unusual features, one being the socket for a small spirit level, suggesting that the camera was intended for document copying and the other being a non-standard accessory shoe. The camera’s interior is painted with home-made black paint and the final finishing touch is a holder from a filing cabinet on the back to hold a card £200 - £300

An Early Experimental ‘Mousetrap’ Camera, English, c.1840, unsigned, constructed of solid heavy-gauge (15mm thick) mahogany with brass pins through the edges to secure in place, the front lens panel with 6 brass pins to secure, with central aperture holding a brass tube (29mm OD), with a single convex lens held in place with a split ring, to the rear of the camera is a single door held in place with a steel wire loop and bone wedge, the inside of the door has a protruding square of mahogany to which the sensitised paper would have been pinned, to the inside top of the door are multiple holes where the pins were inserted, camera, excluding lens, 11.7cm long x 7.3cm x 7.3cm This camera has been studied, photographed and documented by Roger Watson FRSA, Curator of the Fox Talbot Museum as follows;

“An Early Experimental ‘Mousetrap’ Camera The current owner of this camera brought it to me in 2019 for examination. I knew him and had examined other cameras of his in the past. The size, crudeness of construction and the obvious signs of age indicated to me that this had all the hallmarks of an early experimental camera.

By the end of 1839, optical instrument makers in England, France and the US were making finely finished and well-made cameras for the gentleman artist. Prior to that the earliest experimenters had to make their own cameras and these were usually either a converted camera obscura or, like this one, a simple box with a simple lens in one side. The best-known examples of early experimental cameras are the ‘Mousetrap’ cameras used by William Henry Fox Talbot between 1835 and 1840 for his experiments in photogenic drawing. Though there is nothing to indicate that this example was made by or used by Talbot.

Numerous descriptions of these crude cameras exist from the period. In October 1839, Joseph Saxton took a daguerreotype of the Philadelphia Central High School using a cigar box and a glass lens. Similarly in 1840, John Adams Whipple made his first photograph “using a sun-glass for a lens, a candle box for a camera.”

As these cameras were usually small and crude, it’s not surprising that they quickly disappeared and were replaced by professionally manufactured cameras for those who wished to continue with making images.

Forgeries

These Conditions and any disputes or claims arising out of it or their subject matter are governed by and construed in accordance with the law of England. English courts have exclusive jurisdiction to settle any dispute or claim that arises.

Any lot which proves to be a deliberate forgery may be returned to us within 21 days of the auction provided it is in the same condition as when bought and accompanied by particulars identifying it from the relevant catalogue description and a written statement of it’s defects. If we are satisfied from the evidence presented that the lot is a deliberate forgery we shall refund the money paid by you for the lot including any buyers premium.

Flints Auctions Ltd act as agents of the Vendor only. Any contract for the sale of a Lot will be formed between the Vendor and the Buyer.

By bidding at the auction, you agree to be bound by these terms The Auction All Auctions shall be conducted at the absolute discretion of the Auctioneer.

The Auctioneer shall have the right to refuse any bid which does not exceed the previous bid by at least 10% or by such greater proportion as the Auctioneer shall direct.

Flints Auctions Ltd, at its absolute discretion, has the right to refuse admission to its premises or attendance at (or participation in) any Auction by any person.

All members of the public at the auction or storage premises of Flints Auctions Ltd are there at their own risk.

A buyer’s premium of 24% plus VAT is payable on all lots, with an additional 5% for internet bidding making a total of 28.8% plus VAT (with exemption of Flints Live).

All descriptions and conditions, written or verbal, of lots are based upon information provided by the seller and our opinion, not fact. Lots are sold to the buyer on an ‘as seen’ basis which may include faults or imperfections. Photographs included in this catalogue are for a guide and may not represent accurate reproduction or colour of a lot. All measurements and sizes are approximate. However, in so far as we have examined the goods and make a representation about their condition, we shall be liable for any defect which that examination ought to have been revealed to the auctioneer but which would not have been revealed to the buyer had the buyer examined the goods.

It is the responsibility of the Buyer, to examine any lot prior to bidding to satisfy himself/herself regarding condition, provenance, period, age, quality, origin and value. Given the age of the lots, they may have been damaged or repaired so you should not assume that a lot is in ‘good’ condition. Electronic or mechanical parts may not operate as intended and all lots are sold as items of interest for display purposes only.

Condition reports are provided on our website or upon request, however, large numbers of requests received shortly before the auction may not receive a response.

Historically many gemstones have been subjected to a variety of treatments to enhance their appearance. Sapphires and rubies are routinely heat treated to improve their colour and clarity, similarly emeralds are frequently treated with oils or resin for the same purpose.

Other treatments such as staining, irradiation or coating may have been used on other gem stones. These treatments may be permanent, whilst others may need special care or re-treatment over the years to retain their appearance.

Estimates The estimate is printed underneath the lot. Estimates are only an expression of Flints Actions opinion made on behalf of the vendor of the lot is likely to fall, it is not an estimate of value. Prices depend on the bidding and can sell for hammer prices below or above the estimates, so estimates should not be relied upon as an indication of the actual selling price or value of a Lot. Estimates are in the currency of the sale.

Bidding Bidders are required to register their details before the auction commences and the lots will be invoiced to the name and address on the registration form. Some form of identification may be required if you are unknown to us.

The Buyer accepts full liability for all bids submitted, via any means.

Bidders using the live bidding facility on the-saleroom.com are agreeing to the terms and conditions of sale for Flints Auctions Ltd and ATG terms of use. Any successful bids using the live bidding facility will be subject to the usual Buyer’s Premium, plus a surcharge of 5% plus VAT. Flints Auctions Ltd will not be responsible for service delays, interruptions or other failures to make a bid caused by losses of internet connection, fault or failure with the website or bidding process, or malfunction of any software or system, computer or mobile device.

Commission bids left with the auctioneer indicate the highest amount to be bid excluding the buyers premium. They will be executed as cheaply as possible having regard for the reserve (if any) and competing bids. If two buyers submit identical commission bids the auctioneer will prefer the first bid received.

Subject to the conditions above, the highest Bidder at the Hammer Price shall be the Buyer. Any dispute about a bid shall be settled at the Auctioneer’s absolute discretion.

Bidders are deemed to act as principals unless there is a written prior acknowledgement by Flints Auctions Ltd that a Bidder is acting as an agent for a named principal.

Bidders shall be responsible for any decision to bid for a Lot and shall be deemed to have satisfied themselves as to its condition. Neither Flints Auctions Ltd nor its employees or agents shall be responsible for any neglect or default in doing or failing to do so.

Cataloguing is undertaken with reasonable skill and care. Neither Flints Auctions Ltd nor its employees and agents nor the Vendor accept liability for the accuracy of such opinions, and all conditions and warranties, expressed, implied or statutory are hereby excluded.

Buying As soon as a Lot is sold, the Buyer shall pay to Flints Auctions Ltd the total amount due and give Flints Auctions Ltd their name and address and if requested, proof of identity, if all information is not already held.

Cheques are not acceptable by Flints Auctions Ltd (unless Flints Auctions Ltd in its absolute discretion permits payment by such method) nor are third party references or credit facilities with other Auction houses. If a cheque is tendered Flints Auctions Ltd reserves the right to instruct its bank to check the Buyer’s status and account balance before exercising any discretion. Payment by debit or credit card are accepted, there are no additional charges for payment by this method.

The Buyer will pay the Hammer Price and a premium of 24% plus Value Added Tax charged at the rate current at the date of sale.

Lots may in addition have Value Added Tax on the Hammer Price. In this case, such lots will be indicated with an asterisk (§) in the catalogue.

In addition to all other charges Buyers will pay a further charge of 5% + VAT of the Hammer Price if lots are successfully purchased online via thesaleroom.com, Live Auctioneers or Invaluable.

Non-UK or EU VAT registered buyers can have some classes of VAT refunded on their purchases. However please note that VAT on buyer’s premium is always payable wherever the buyer is domiciled or wherever the goods are to be sent.

Ownership of Lots purchased does not pass to the Buyer until payment in full is made to Flints Auctions Ltd. Collection: Buyers are responsible for taking away any lot they have purchased within 10 days of the auction date. Please call the office or email to make an appointment to collect purchased lots.

Flints Auctions Ltd will give 10 day’s notice if any storage or insurance costs are due from non-collection Shipping: Any shipping costs must be paid in advance by the Buyer this charge will be added to the invoice.

Flints Auctions Ltd acts as agent for the Vendor, and is not responsible for default by the Buyer.

If any Lot is not paid for in full and taken away in accordance with these Conditions, or if there is any other breach of these Conditions, Flints Auctions Ltd as agents for the Vendor shall at its absolute discretion and without prejudice to any other rights it may have, be entitled to exercise all or any of the following rights and remedies: i) to proceed against the Buyer for an action for debt or damages for breach of contract; ii) to rescind the sale of that Lot and/or any other Lots sold by Flints Auctions Ltd to the defaulting Buyer; iii) to re-sell the Lot by Auction or private treaty. If a lower Hammer Price is achieved on the re-sale than that achieved on the original sale the defaulting Buyer shall be liable for the difference; iv) to remove, store and insure the Lot at the expense of the defaulting Buyer; v) to retain that or any other Lot sold to the defaulting Buyer until that Buyer pays the total amount due; vi) to reject or ignore bids from the defaulting Buyer at future Auctions or to impose conditions before any such bids shall be accepted.
