Since the early 19th c. following Napoleon’s successful archeological expedition to Egypt, repeated reports of discoveries in the Middle East, fascinated the Romantic spirits in Britain and throughout the world. French travelers, such as the famous painter Gerome, Americans including the writer Mark Twain and even Russian travelers made frequent voyages to the Levant. The Holy city of Jerusalem and the sites of Christendom as well as Egypt and Petra became their goal. Artists followed the paths of the wealthy site-seers or the religious travelers to sell souvenirs of views of the Western Wall or the Pyramids or characteristic oriental bazar scenes. Best known amongst these is David Roberts who recorded from 1838 to 1840 in watercolor and etchings his famous trip to Egypt and the Holy Land. His renowned assiduity in depicting details was followed by several artists amongst them the British William Gale. Gale traveled to the Holy Land in the early 1860s to make drawings of the great sites of historical and religious interest. Unaffected by the possibility of plaque and cholera he recorded in considerable detail the city’s geographical, architectural and human features. In the painting of the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, we can see the artist’s ability to paint the religious monument and the people with a commendable degree of accuracy. Adopting to depict the Wall looking towards south, he records with reliability the detailed forms of the age-old worn Roman stones and their powerful appearance. The colorfully dressed people shown praying, form a strong contrast to the stern looking wall. Our eyes slowly moving from left to right record first the mesmerizing appearance of a visionary figure dressed in a rich red and green wear. The figure perched on a walking cane transversely to the wall blocks our view from continuing down along the wall. He appears to look upwards towards the sky and possibly to G-d as if in silent prayer, thus giving us the symbolical meaning of the painting. The people depicted by his side are placed in different praying postures some kneeling next to or touching the sacred wall others to the right praying upright book in hand with the white ‘Talith’ on their head. An Eastern looking woman dressed in pink, seen walking towards us holding a child while balancing a vase attentively on her head, completes the composition. For the mid-nineteenth Century audience in London, for whom the Panorama was intended, the effect must have been astonishing. Gale’s drawings were transformed into a lively and vivid painting bringing the religious atmosphere of this sacred place to the wider public. To use a praise given to David Roberts during his late journey in the East’, it was ‘a picture of superior pretentions as a work of art’ ‘ minute yet picturesque’. Oren Migdal
