Storing Tips
STORAGE RSA
Plan your storage space by placing those items you will need to access more frequently near the front of your unit. Remove all perishables and inflammable items like aerosols, batteries and petrol. Please ensure all gas bottles are emptied before storing it. Make sure that all your appliances are clean and dry before storing them. Leave appliances slightly open to prevent mildew. Leave a small space between the wall and your storage items to allow for proper ventilation. Stack lighter boxes on top of heavier boxes – use the height of the unit. Plastic tends to sweat so remember to leave the bottom of the plastic cover open when you store for a long term or it might cause mildew to grow on your furniture. Consider covering your furniture with blankets. Blankets are an excellent cover to protect furniture. Leather items also tend to sweat so when you cover those goods, first wrap them in cusion craft. Cushion craft is bubble plastic with brown paper on the outer surfaces. The brown paper will absorb moisture from the leather. Blankets are an excellent covering material for leather. Place plastic mattress sheets or protective covering over soft furnishings. Use blankets to cover table tops, and chairs when stacking them on one another – this will protect your items from scratching. Use the following covers and orientation for furniture: Cusion craft or blankets, store on end, not flat. Couches Cusion craft or bubble wrap, store upright. Paintings Mirrors Bubble wrap, store upright. See that its dry when put into a plastic mattress cover; leave the bottom open Mattresses for ventilation. Store flat. Wood & Steel Furniture Use blankets. Dismantle items such as tables, bed frames and electronic appliances – this will save space. Wrap and label all pieces to simplify the re-assembly. If you are storing metal items or substances it is advisable to treat it with a rust protector or wiping them down with an oily rag or Q20. Do not assume that your household insurance covers the goods in storage – make the necessary arrangements with your insurer. You need to notify your insurer that your goods are now stored with Storage RSA to ensure ongoing coverage. Use two high quality 'disc' locks for your unit. They are much harder to break or cut, keeping your goods as safe as possible. Storage RSA specifically disapprove of padlocks and strongly recommend that you do not use padlocks but rather disc locks. Ensure that you open the roller shutter doors correctly – lift the doors from the middle up and bend your knees, not your back. Use the bottom handles only for closing the door. Do not give out your password / unit number / tag or any information to anyone that is not listed as having access. A pest control program should be repeated at least every 6 months. If you store longer than 6 months, open your unit and ask the Facility Manager to repeat the pest control treatment.
