Huis ten Bosch

First Years Guide

Huis ten Bosch is one of the smaller residences on campus and we truly operate as a family. I can guarantee you that you will make life- long friends here!

Those ladies not too fond of winter will be glad to know that Huis ten Bosch is one of the ladies residences’ situated the nearest to campus. DSTV, cosy kuierkamertjies (sitting rooms), washbasins in our rooms and a wonderful HTB garden adds to the charm of this residence. We are exited to see the unique contribution that you will make to HTB and we can’t wait to welcome you as part of the Huis Ten Bosch family!

Our Emblem

What it stands for: • Book: Knowledge • Trees: The origin of our name • Three Rings: Unity and teamwork • Lauder leaves: The crowning of success

Life in Huis ten Bosch Since we are one of the smaller residences on campus, we can easily say that we are one big family. Huis ten Bosch is made up of 164 girls from various backgrounds, each with a story to tell. HTB is divided into 8 sections, with their unique name and image. The sections are: Katjie, Oorspronklik, Craven, Palmal, Backstreet, Quality, HEG and Windlawaai. Every section is made up of girls from different year groups including a HK member, that is responsible for the section. Upon your arrival you will see that HTB is truly a place where you can be whoever you want to be. Our motto (Esto Ipsa or be yourself) forms part or every house member’s daily lifestyle and is an integral part of everything we do. We partake in various activities including a wide range of sports and culture events. Throughout the year we also organize different events including dances, a leadership weekend, Inblynaweek, and socials with other residences. You’ll soon find yourself forming part of the unique family that makes Huis ten Bosch the place to be!

VicMeyr Welcome to VicMeyr Cluster! VicMeyr cluster consists of Aurora, which is a mixed private students organisation (PSO); Lydia, Huis ten Bosch and Minerva, which are ladies residences; and Dagbreek and Majuba, which are men’s residences. The concept of clusters is relatively new to Stellenbosch University. It was introduced in order to widen the perspectives of students at the university and allow students to interact with people outside of their specific residence or PSO on an academic, social and cultural level. Our motto at VicMeyr is ‘Building friendships’. The name comes from a combination of Victoria Street and Hofmeyr Street, which are the two streets in which all of our houses are. At VicMeyr we try to create a friendly environment where people can interact and build friendships. These friendships will hopefully make your life at Stellenbosch University a better experience. We do events together so as to create a community amongst our respective residences and PSO. This community is based on the values of mutual respect, integrity, camaraderie and critical thinking. VicMeyr cluster welcomes you to Stellenbosch University and your respective house. We hope that you will have an awesome and fulfilled student life. We also hope to be seeing you at many VicMeyr events in the coming years.

This letter is just to introduce ourselves as your mentors for 2011 so you’ll know who we are and understand our role in res! A mentor is a senior student that assists her group of first years for the whole year. There are eight mentors in HTB and each of us have a group of about six first years. With that, we can also refer you to an academic mentor (tutor) or someone in res that is able to help you. So know that you can come to us at any time, with anything or any problem, situation or just if you need a hug or a cup of coffee ☺ We really hope that you are as excited as we are for the coming year! Good luck with your all the packing and enjoy your holiday! HTB love! Lize Visser

What is JOOL/RAG? JOOL staan vir Jou Onbaatsugtige Opoffering vir Liefdadigheid. This year Huis ten Bosch is partnering with Huis Visser! Together, the HKs have been working hard to make sure Huis ten Bosch and Huis Visser will not go unnoticed! We will be participating in Vensters, vlotte, akkerjolle, and trollies with the charming gentlemen of Huis Visser. Our theme for JOOL 2011 is: ‘Funhouse – Filling Houses with smiles’, based on the general JOOL theme, “Trapped in bizarro”.

Community interaction Community Interaction Community Interaction aims to be more focused on student awareness and interaction in various Stellenbosch community projects. These Community Interaction projects are not just hand-outs, but projects where the beneficiaries are equipped with sustainable skills and knowledge that will lead to a brighter and better future. Community Interaction gives the opportunity for the first years to get involved in the community. Every individual can grow through community interaction. MGD (Maties Gemeenskapdiens) Maties Community Service (MCS) is a separate department of Stellenbosch University which has been serving our surrounding communities since 1964. MCS is the main beneficiary of RAG funds. These funds are used to give back to the community during the year in One-Stop service projects. The enthusiasm of the students in their support of RAG plays a huge role in sustaining MCS projects.

Akkerjolle The Akkerjol is a annual magazine published by the University for the Residences to sell during RAG, and also counts toward the final marks of RAG. A little performance is required before the sales start to impress the judges and to build team spirit!

Bondelsport This is a “girls-only” event, which makes it extra fun and memorable! All the Residences compete for the sport and “gees” trophies.

• Trollies vind gedurende JOOL plaas. One Trolley gets decorated according to a theme decided between the RAG partners. The participants as well as the audience is also dressed according to the theme. Daar vind dan ‘n resies plaas in Victoria straat.

Vensters is one of the biggest events of RAG. This will always be a night to remember!

On this day all of your hard work is rewarded.
