 Fairytale

On a Monday in autumn, in a room down the hall, sat twenty-six children, some big and some small.

On a Monday in autumn, in a room down the hall, sat twenty-six children, some big and some small.

Some yawned and some wriggled, one stood on her head,  “Get ready, it’s time to learn fractions,” Ms. Chen said.

Some yawned and some wriggled, one stood on his head,  “Get ready, it’s time to learn fractions,” Ms. Chen said.

Now twenty-six children, you’ll know if your smart, means twenty-six different places to start.

To know who was ready, oh what a mess! Ms. Chen had to hope, and often to guess.

But this day was different. Oh, this day! You'll see!

Ms. Chen had a sidekick. And who would that be?

His name was Milo. He was small. He was keen.

A loyal maths companion, the best ever seen!

On a Monday in autumn, in a room down the hall, sat twenty-six children, some big and some small.

Some yawned and some wriggled, one stood on her head,  “Get ready, it’s time to learn fractions,” Ms. Chen said.

Milo used Mathspace to quickly check the class. Each child's small beacon lit bright as they passed.

Green glowing for "Got it!" and amber, "Almost!" And red telling Ms. Chen, "This child needs you most."

But Milo had more. Oh, that Milo had more! He unrolled an enormous great map on the floor.

Not a map of a town, or a park, or a sea, but a map of all maths, every bit there could be!

START

Each idea was a light. Every path was a thread.  "Equivalent fractions" into “adding fractions" ahead.

From primary to 12, the little roads ran,

All glowing and going. Now there was a plan!

Equivalent fractions Adding fractions

Then when poor Aarav got stuck on his track, Milo found the problem two lights back.

Ms. Chen taught it - “equivalent” was the stray,
Then Aarav was confident and carried on his way!

And content? Oh, Milo had content to spare, for every last outcome and syllabus there! On screens when the iPads were charged up and bright, On paper when writing practice was right.

For the "I do" — a lesson!

For the "we do" — a sheet!

For the "you do" — well, that's where the magic gets neat.

The second a child started practice — why, zip!

There Milo'd be waiting, no fuss and no slip.

If they flew, he'd say nothing and let the child fly!

If they got stuck, there he'd be with the help standing by:

A hint! Or a step! Or a way you could view it!

In whatever child's language they needed to do it.

Hi! I'm Milo, your maths sidekick. Let me know how I can help.

I don't know what to do.

No worries! Let's find the tricky part together. What fraction is equal to ?

Great thinking! Can you use that to rewrite the problem? Oh, I can solve it now!

Give it a try!

And Mathspace gave Ms. Chen all her data, laid plain, and gave the small learners their feedback the same:

Not a slash of red pen. Not a thunderous "NO."
Just "Have one more go, friend." And off they would go

And Ms Chen, with no mountain of marking to climb, no stack and no scrawl and no red-pen-all-time, Did the thing, the one thing, she'd become a teacher for.

She just taught. And she taught. And she taught some more!

And so, on a Friday not many weeks on, she looked round the room and the wondering was gone:  Less yawny. Still wriggling. None standing on their head. Just twenty-six learners, all growing instead.

The end.

Meet Ms Chen. She has one class, twenty-six students, and a very small, very clever sidekick named Milo.

Together, they tackle fractions, and the not-so-small problem of teaching every child exactly what they need — all at the same time.

Ms. Chen and Milo is a celebration of what modern maths teaching can look like: responsive, joyful, and a little bit magical.
