THERMAL PRESENCE

Thermal energy / heat is transferred from one location to another by particles bouncing into each other. All matter contains energy. The more energy that is present, the hotter the object will be.

With this project I wanted to explore how to extend this process. Where you can be present but distant at the same time.

The gussets where made with Pepakura and Fusion 360. When importing a model into Pepakura, you can choose to either display the edge ID of the piece or the fold angle. Using these fold angles i made two base gussets in Fusion 360, one “mountain fold” and one “valley fold”. Using these two shapes i took each fold angle from pepakura and made two gussets for each angle. I also imported each panel to draw in the tab holes for the gussets in the correct places.

Using the AMG8833 Thermal camera sensor you can determine the presence and location of a person. This sensor outputs an array of 64 values. These values can be sorted into a 8x8 grid as a super low resolution camera. Using these values we can create a low fidelity output by normalising the heat value of each pixel.

This shows the process of taking t malising them going from 0 - 1 and This way we can generate a black White = high temperature, black =

temperature[i] =

p

maxTe

temperature[i] = temperat

the temperature values, nord then mapping it from 0 - 255. k and white display. = low temperature.

pixel[i] - roomTemperature

emperature - roomTemperature

ture[i] * 255

In this last step the low resolution display is interpolated / scaled up. This way it becomes easier to differentiate people from random noise in the camera. Also decided to overlay a normal heat gradient on top to make it more clear. It makes it easier to understand that it’s about extending your presence via heat / body temperature.

The projection map is made by overlaying the pixel grid and calculating the average temperature of the pixels that intersect with each panel. E.g. here the average temperature value of pixel 46, 54, 62, 39, 47, 55 and 63 calculated. This value will then be assigned to the correct panel. This is a very quick and dirty way to do it, and it only really works because the sensor camera has such low resolution.
