Annual Report 2020

We Thrive Because You Care

MESSAGE FROM KENDELL R. SPROT T, PRESIDENT & CEO

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times* 2020 will go down in the history books as a time of unprecedented challenges and enormous loss. Our comfortable routines were upended, family connections were disrupted, and the very essence of what makes our lives meaningful was threatened. We watched anxiously as the novel coronavirus quickly spread around the world, sickening millions. Without a doubt, in the words of Charles Dickens, “It was the worst of times.” However, it has also been “the best of times.” I have witnessed the extraordinary courage and dedication of our employees, who risked their own health to care for and protect their patients, often working extra shifts to cover for colleagues who could not work because of family responsibilities, medical conditions, or exposure to the virus. Our staff treated patients with even greater kindness and warmth than usual, fully realizing the suffering they incurred because family could not visit and their muchloved activities had to stop for a prolonged period. Our patients were courageous and patient; their families were generous and supportive, and grateful for the skilled healthcare and nurturing environment that sustained their loved ones; our donors gave generously to our Emergency Fund in addition to their regular donations, and gathered and delivered personal protective equipment to Matheny when it was almost impossible to find; residents of PeapackGladstone and surrounding areas brought in food and PPE, keeping up everyone’s spirits with their concern, and special attentions, such as the Parade of Heroes and the chalked message celebrating our staff; and Matheny’s Board of Trustees and other leadership helped to guide us through these tough times. Matheny will celebrate its 75th anniversary soon. I know that our founders, and all those who helped build and sustain Matheny through the years, would join me in recognizing the incredible human spirit that has come to define who we are and who we will continue to be. While I plan to retire in 2021, the separation will not be easy. It has been such an honor and a joy to serve and be a part of this remarkable community for the last six years. *From A Tale of Two Cities, 1859

Matheny: An Overview Matheny encompasses a wide array of services to the disabled community. Matheny is a fully-accredited special hospital for children and adults with medically complex developmental disabilities; a special education school providing academics, combined with functional life skills, for students, ages 3–21; a comprehensive dental and medical center meeting the healthcare needs of people with all types of disabilities in the community; and the awardwinning Arts Access Program providing individuals with disabilities the freedom to create art. Matheny also trains healthcare professionals, therapists, and educators how to work effectively with persons who have developmental disabilities. Matheny’s main campus in Peapack, NJ, is home to 101 children and adults with developmental disabilities. Its five group homes, located in Somerset and Warren counties, provide a residence in the community for an additional 30 adults. Plans are coming to fruition for additional group homes throughout the area. Many of Matheny’s residents, in addition to their primary diagnoses, have a long list of associated clinical conditions. While the majority of Matheny patients have cerebral palsy as their primary diagnosis, Matheny also has patients with spina bifida, Lesch-Nyhan Disease (LND), and a wide range of rare conditions. Matheny’s outreach includes:

All in the Family

W

hen Herbert Bachelor heard that Matheny needed emergency funds for personal protective equipment for the staff, and other needs related to COVID-19, he was eager to help out. His grandson, Scott Gordon, had been a Matheny student since sixth grade and has been a Matheny resident for the past three years. “He’s been so happy and well-cared-for by such a dedicated staff,” says Mr. Bachelor, who has always been an advocate for his grandson, as well as supporting the tireless efforts of his daughter and son-inlaw, Julie and Andrew Gordon, on Scott’s behalf. Scott’s grandfather has donated generously to Matheny’s fundraisers. This Spring, when asked for an additional donation to the COVID Emergency Fund, he responded quickly with a $100,000 gift. “It felt like the right thing to do,” he says. “Matheny’s staff has always been there for Scott. Now I had the opportunity to do something for them.” Scott’s family has been involved with Matheny for almost a decade. When Julie first visited the school, she “was excited

by the level of education, therapy, and genuine caring. The teachers bring real academics to the classroom and are a big part of what sets Matheny apart,” she says. “There is a philosophy here that there’s nothing these kids can’t do and that’s coupled with an amazing sense of warmth.”

“I can never thank the staff enough,” says Julie Gordon. “While the world shut down, Matheny’s staff kept our son safe and well.” Scott, who turned 21 in May, graduated from The Matheny School in 2020. He first attended the day program and lived at home. When Scott’s needs became too big to manage safely at home, his parents made the difficult decision to apply for placement in Matheny’s residential care program. They visit and FaceTime with Scott weekly. “He thrives on social interaction and being at Matheny has

been a joy for him,” says Julie. Scott has twin siblings, James and Whitney, now 17, who also have actively supported Matheny. James is “a particularly strong advocate for his brother,” says Julie. He is co-president of the Matheny Club, whose studentmembers visited Matheny’s residents regularly before COVID-19. Now James volunteers at the Second Chance Thrift Shop, which raises funds that help support Matheny’s activities and programs. In the Spring, when family could not visit Matheny’s residents, “The staff were in and out of Scott’s room all the time. He’s been surrounded by people who love him. And he loves them,” says Julie. During April and May, Julie rounded up some PPE for Matheny’s staff; dropped off pizza and doughnuts for them at the main entrance; and participated in the car-parade to honor employees. “I can never thank the staff enough,” she says. “While the world shut down, Matheny’s staff kept our son safe and well.” “Matheny has always helped Scott live his best possible life,” states his grandfather. “The staff help him move forward,” states Julie. “Speech therapy taught Scott how to manage a wider variety of foods. He can use a picture board to communicate better and has a greater tolerance for touch. His patience and attention span have improved. He tolerates his stander longer and loves the Matheny pool—it is truly his happy place. The joy on his face is incredible.” Matheny’s staff made it possible for Scott to communicate frequently with his family via FaceTime during the lockdown. Seeing Scott so “happy and healthy, and an incredibly loved member of the Matheny family,” gave his family peace of mind. And Mr. Bachelor’s generous donation, which is also being used to upgrade Matheny’s WiFi, will ensure that family and friends of Matheny’s residents can always keep in touch. matheny annual report 2020

Galvanized Into Action

T

he Spring of 2020 was one of the most challenging periods ever faced by the staff and residents of Matheny. COVID-19 was rampant throughout New Jersey and much of the Northeast; the virus had everyone deep in its grip. Matheny was prepared for COVID-19 with an able, skilled staff; and knowledge gained firsthand over decades of caring for its more than 130 adult and pediatric long-term resident patients, many with developmental disabilities and most with chronic, complex medical issues. In fact, Matheny is no stranger to managing infectious disease. The annual flu season brings a required quarantine of residents every year. This year, however, flu season moved into COVID-19 season with no time to breathe in between. After the seasonal flu retreated in early 2020, staff moved into high gear once again to protect their

But in just two weeks, Matheny was in danger of exhausting its reserves of life-saving supplies—suddenly more expensive and harder to find. It was then that the Matheny Emergency Fund was born. Funding to purchase essential items was sorely needed right away. The call went out; and Debbie and Ajay Nagpal were among those who were moved to respond. 6

matheny annual report 2020

Many donors to Matheny have a family connection—a son or daughter, sister or brother, niece or nephew whose life has been impacted by the high quality medical, educational, social, and recreational services provided. The Nagpal’s connection to Matheny stems not from family, but from their longstanding ties to the local community. Ajay and Debbie graduated from high school together in Los Altos, California, started dating when they came East to attend college and continued during their graduate school days. She earned an MPA from Columbia University and he an MPP from Harvard. They married in 1995, and moved to Millburn in 1996, where they still reside with their daughter and three sons, born in 1998, 2000, 2002, and 2003. Debbie worked for years at Goldman Sachs. Ajay is the Chief Operating Officer at Millennium Management. An early link to Matheny came through their daughter Olivia, now 22, whose dance troupe performed there during her school years. Debbie regularly attended these performances: “I was always incredibly impressed by Matheny’s mission, the facilities, and the incredibly dedicated, committed staff.” The couple learned more through their

long friendship with Matheny Board of Trustees member, Kenneth Alter, executive director of the Deron School for special needs students, and their friendship with Julie and Andrew Gordon, whose son Scott graduated from The Matheny School in 2020. Scott is currently a resident-participant in Matheny’s Adult Services program. (See article on page 3.) “There are not a lot of places that do what Matheny does,” observes Debbie. “We’re fortunate to have them in our community.” “The early days of the COVID outbreak were galvanizing,” says Ajay. “There were so many in truly dire need, and then you see an institution like Matheny, which serves some of the most vulnerable people, in danger of being unable to provide care safely.” The Nagpal’s timing was crucial. Their $100,000 donation went a long way to help rebuild Matheny’s patient-care supplies and purchase PPE to protect the staff who protect the patients. Almost all of Matheny’s patients and staff made it through the Spring 2020 COVID-19 crisis. The largesse of donors like Debbie and Ajay was critical in heading off an impending crisis.

YOU GOT TO HAVE FRIENDS More than 140 Friends of Matheny volunteers have dedicated thousands of hours to making the Second Chance Thrift Shop in Gladstone a popular shopping spot for the last 36 years; and the shop has donated more than $100,000 annually for 13 consecutive years to support a broad array of projects to enhance life at Matheny. This year, once again, the Friends donated $100,000 to Matheny, for a grand total of more than $3 million. Linda Horton, who headed up the thrift shop for 25 years until her retirement this past summer, motivated this large crew of volunteers to build the shop into the incredible resource it is today.

MILES FOR MATHENY

There’s No Stopping

COVID-19 did not cancel out this year’s Miles for Matheny in its 23rd consecutive year. The traditional gathering of hundreds was not an option. This year’s sponsors include: Peapack-Gladstone Bank (Cycling Sponsor); Pfizer (5K Sponsor); Partlow Insurance Agency (Fitness Walk Sponsor); Porzio Bromberg & Newman (Kids Fun Run Sponsor); Mariner Wealth Advisors (Rest Stop Sponsor); J.T. Petrucci (Entertainment Sponsor); FinPro (Community Sponsor); The Tustin Group (Contributing Sponsor). The 2020 top individual and team fundraisers are: Team Andy Lash; Team Desatnick; Julie Gordon; Danny’s “A-Team”; Patrick Scaglione; and the Grier family. We are so grateful to the scores of people who contributed and made this Miles truly special.
