Introduction. On March 25, 2019, as a part of the Photojournalism university project, we started making a series of photographs under the theme “5 o’clock in the afternoon”. Every day for 6 weeks - 42 days - we took one photo at 5 o’clock in the afternoon (or actually in the evening?), at a place where we were at that moment, and posted it on Twitter until 6 p.m. for project documentation, writing a text for it. 5 o’clock in the afternoon - it’s the middle of the day of ordinary people who begin their day around 8-9 o’clock in the morning. It is a transition. It is neither evening nor day. It is the end of the working time and the beginning of the evening and free time. 5 o’clock is the twilight. It is like a border. It is like a time horizon. It is the line where day and evening meet, morning coffee and evening coffee, light and darkness, beginning and end have get together. It’s the transition border. It is a point where the antipodes meet. I take a step from one to another. The horizon is the motive for my pictures. The line dividing the picture into two equal halves. Which spatial horizon do I meet in the temporal horizon, at 5 o’clock in the afternoon? What happens in the environment? Which horizon do I have today? What do I think in the middle of the day? 4

The horizon line comes deliberately 1/2 through the images (not as in classical composition 1/3 or 2/3), dividing the recording on two equal half: lower part and upper part. As a text to the pictures, I used my own quotations or a stream of thoughts. These were phrases that arose to me in the middle of the day. Often at 5 p.m. I really wanted to sleep, so the phrases were sometimes very absurd and meaningless, or neutral, or philosophical. They reflect the reality in which I lived - my projects, moving the university building, my travels in this period of time, the joy of the first picture sold. 5-hour phrases are like a string, weakly or strongly stretched. It’s like a single line, blurry or sharp, like a terminator. “I take a stop. I look around. I see the horizon. It means I walk in the right direction. ” Alice Matern, Linz 2019
