LEATHER BASICS

CRYPTON LEATHER GRADES

FULL GRAIN

The finest quality leather, crafted from the top layer of the hide. It preserves the natural grain, with no sanding or correction, showcasing the hide’s unique character. Renowned for its exceptional durability and breathability, full-grain leather develops a rich, beautiful patina over time—making it a premium choice for furniture that ages gracefully.

TOP GRAIN

Crafted from the upper layer of the hide, then lightly sanded to remove natural imperfections. This finishing process creates a smooth, uniform appearance while preserving much of the leather’s strength and durability. Designers appreciate its clean, refined look, and over time, it develops a soft, elegant patina that brings warmth and character to both residential and commercial spaces.

CRYPTON LEATHER FINISH TYPES

ANILINE

May be lightly buffed, with the final colour evened out through a fine spray of aniline dye. Commonly finished with oils and waxes, it offers beautiful pull-up qualities or a softly crackled appearance. Natural markings are part of its charm, showcasing the leather’s unique character.

SEMI ANILINE

Typically refined through gentle buffing and coloured with a blend of aniline dyes and pigments, this leather offers a smooth, balanced tone and a polished, uniform aesthetic. While the finish can be crafted to look natural, it is less likely to develop a patina over time.

PIGMENTED

These hardworking top grain leathers are surface-corrected to remove natural markings, then finished with a rich layer of pigment and a durable protective topcoat. The process allows for exceptional colour versatility, making them ideal for highperformance, design-driven applications.

PATINA

Patina refers to the rich, evolving character that develops on certain leathers over time through use, light, and touch. Dynamic leathers—like full aniline or oil-waxed hides—are designed to age gracefully, revealing deeper tones, softness, and sheen. In contrast, static leathers with heavy finishes or protective coatings maintain their original look, resisting change and patina.

LEATHER QUANTIFICATION

Leather is quantified differently to fabric due to its organic, irregular shape. While fabric is sold by the linear metre with a fixed width, leather is sold by the square metre, and actual usable area can vary depending on the hide and the project.

• Average yield for upholstery is 65-70% of the hide's total area.

• A linear metre of 137 cm wide fabric = 1.25 sqm

• A linear metre of leather = 1.67 sqm

• Crypton leather average hide size is between 4.4-5.1 sqm

Average Leather Requirements

• Dining Chair (Seat & Back): 0.8 – 1.2 sqm

• Dining Chair (Back Only): 0.5 – 0.7 sqm

• Bar Stool (Seat Only): 0.4 – 0.6 sqm

• Accent Chair: 3.5 – 4.5 sqm

• Recliner / Lounge Chair: 5 – 6.5 sqm

• 2-Seater Sofa: 10 – 12 sqm

• 3-Seater Sofa: 14 – 16 sqm

• King Headboard: 3.5 – 4.5 sqm

• Ottoman (Small): 1 – 1.5 sqm

CARE & MAINTENANCE

MAINTENANCE

CLEANING

Crypton Leather offers exceptional stain resistance and easy cleanability. Common stains like wine, coffee, sunscreen, hair gel, vinegar, blood, urine, and typical food spills can be easily removed. In some cases, a cleaner containing up to a 5% bleach solution (sodium hypochlorite) can be used on Crypton-treated leather. However, most stains can be effectively cleaned with mild soap and water or the household/commercial cleaning products listed below.

Important: For best results, clean any spills or stains within 60 minutes of occurrence. Delaying cleaning may reduce stain removal success. Always avoid excessive cleaning product application on seams or stitching.

Cleaning Process for Crypton-Protected Leather

1. Gently blot the stain with a clean cloth (dry or damp) to soak up excess soil.

2. Using a damp cloth and mild soap (like Ivory® or Woolite®), gently wipe the stain in a circular motion. Avoid rubbing.

3. Use clean water and a damp cloth to remove any soap residue.

4. Blot the area with paper towels using light pressure, then allow the leather to air dry completely.

5. If the stain persists, apply a recommended household or commercial cleaner. Spray directly on the stain, then gently wipe the area with a clean, soft cloth using medium pressure in a circular motion.

6. Rinse with clean water and blot dry with paper towels.

7. Allow the leather to fully air dry.

8. If any stain remains, repeat steps 6-7.

9. Some stains, like mustard, ink, or permanent marker, may be difficult to remove.

Leathers protected by Crypton can be cleaned and disinfected using many popular commercial household cleaners and several approved by the CDC:

• Up to 5% bleach solution

• Sodium hypochlorite

• Quaternary ammonium

• Hydrogen peroxide

• Cortina Leathers Universal Cleaner High-Tech Leather Wipes®

• Ecolab Peroxide Multi-Surface Cleaner & Disinfectant

• Lysol® Disinfecting Wipes

• Fantastik® All Purpose Cleaner

• Clorox® Clean Up + Bleach
