THE ACOUSTIC COLLECTION

Since 1980, Materialised has delivered innovative, high-performance furnishing textiles and wall covering to the Australasian contract interior design industry, with printing and warehousing taking place in the Southern Sydney suburb of Blakehurst.

Our Design Studios are located in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Auckland, Costa Rica and Singapore. The team is steeped in a culture of ‘making a difference by doing things differently’ - striving to make a positive difference to community, industry, clients and those occupying the spaces we furnish.

ACOUSTIC SOLUTIONS

Acoustic performance is an important, yet sometimes underrated element of building design.

Acoustics shouldn’t just be considered in building types like concert halls and theatres, but also hotels, bars, restaurants, offices, clubs and aged care facilities.

Sound that is not managed properly interferes with complex task performance, speech intelligibility, behaviour, and is a potential stress inducer. Numerous diners or staff in open-plan spaces; guests in the halls or adjacent rooms; noise from plumbing, HVAC and elevators; noise from function rooms and exterior noise from vehicles are all sounds that need to be minimised.

Materialised offers amazing acoustic solutions for windows and walls to improve comfort without compromising the design integrity.

A harmonious balance of acoustics and aesthetics.

SOUND ABSORPTION RATES - NRC

To quantify our product as commercial acoustic solutions, each is tested and awarded an NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) rating.

The NRC relates to the absorption effectiveness of the material, and is calculated by averaging how absorptive a material is at different frequencies.

Hush acoustic fabric is tested at 250hz, 500hz, 1000hz and 2,000hz.

Whisper acoustic products are tested at 125hz, 250hz, 500hz, 1000hz, 2,000hz and 4,000hz.

Taking the average number, it is then applied to the NRC scale of 0 to 1. A perfectly sound absorptive material achieves a 1, whereas a 0 indicates no absorption.

ACOUSTIC SHEER CURTAIN FABRIC

You’ll hardly believe the difference that lightweight acoustic sheers will make to a space, achieving NRC results previously unavailable for modern architecture.

Watch the video on our YouTube channel.

Our acoustic sheers absorb sound and improve understandability. They are:

• Flame retardant

• Wide width

• Durable

HOW IT WORKS

Woven with a ribbon shaped Trevira CS yarn, this filament is the key to their sound absorption, managing the flow of sound waves repeatedly passing through and bouncing off a reflective surface. This changes the tone, becoming muffled, and results in the reduction of sound levels.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

For optimum acoustic benefit, we recommend the curtain track be positioned 15 to 20cm from the window or wall, with a minimum 2:1 fullness ratio using an S-Fold style of heading

“Acoustic Sheers absorb significantly more sound energy than any other sheer fabric that I know of. In contemporary decors where hard surfaces are preferred, these acoustic sheers are an ideal way to introduce desperately needed, unobtrusive, and highly effective sound absorption.”

ACOUSTIC SHEER BLINDS

The difference a lightweight acoustic blind makes to a room’s acoustic amenity is nothing short of ground breaking.

“We have an open plan office with hard surface finishes everywhere, and it looks out onto the factory floor. It was very noisy and near impossible to have several conversations and phone calls at once. So we made roller blinds using Hush acoustic sheer Frequency White fabric. Not only do they perform well, reducing the echo and intensity of sound in the room dramatically, but they look great too and we often have comments from visitors.”

ACOUSTIC CURTAIN FABRIC

In our lineup, we offer acoustic curtain fabric that mimics the appearance and texture of a soft drape. At the same time, their technology provides effective acoustic control, resulting in impressive Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) performance.

LIGHT REFLECTIVE DRAPERY - LOW EMISSION

The Sonic & Sun is a reflective acoustic curtain that has the potential to reduce the energy needed to cool a room in hot weather and conserve energy during winter. This classifies Sonic & Sun as an energysaving product!

ACOUSTIC LIGHT REDUCTION CURTAIN FABRC

Our range of light reduction curtain fabric offers an array of print designs and plain colour options to satisfy the most exacting demands in aesthetics and functionality. These fabrics have the look and feel of a soft drape, whilst their technology offers both light reduction and acoustic control, delivering an outstanding NRC.

PRINT COMPATIBILITY

Our Midnight offers print compatibility, allowing you to select designs from our extensive library, which we digitally print at our manufacturing headquarters in Sydney. Alternatively, you can opt for an unprinted option.

“To deal with an open plan bar space with multi-use requirements, a drapery solution was decided upon to provide flexibility for the client and acoustic abatement for guests. The solution needed to be both cost-effective and acoustically efficient. Materialised’s acoustic drapery fabric, Midnight, was perfect for the job and was both soft in its handle and weighted in its drape.”

WHISPERART

WhisperArt® is fabric-covered acoustic art perfect for areas where noise negatively affects the soundscape, while adding a visual dimension to the space.

Materialised supplies commercial trade and professional interior design markets with distinctive, thought-provoking acoustic wall art. We have put together an image library consisting of a carefully curated collection along with framing options, giving you the flexibility to find exactly what you need for your project.

HOW IT WORKS

Each acoustic art panel contains an acoustic absorber. The soundwaves pass through the outer skin of fabric, through to the infill where the sound energy is absorbed.

The panels are constructed with a patented polymer tracking system that eliminates the use of adhesives, nails, tacks, or tape while maintaining constant rigidity. This system enables tightly stretching our commercial grade fabric over the acoustic absorbers to create the acoustic art. The framework can therefore be re-used by changing the fabric ‘skin’ if a change of decoration is required.

SUSTAINABILITY

The acoustic absorber is manufactured from thermally bonded polyester fibre with up to 80% recycled fibre content from post-consumer PET packaging. It has a Global GreenTag GreenRate™ Level A certification with a Global GreenTag Platinum HealthRATE™ certification.

MADE IN SYDNEY

Materialised manufactures the acoustic art in-house. We print designs onto a flame retardant textile base cloth with a modified weave, allowing air to freely pass through, whilst maintaining printed integrity. Choose designs from our vast print library or work with our team of in-house designers to supply your own.

FRAMING & HANGING

A little different from a traditional framed print, the artwork sits within the box frame with a 5mm gap, creating a sophisticated shadow effect between the frame and the acoustic art panel. Shadow frames are 10mm thick, and 55mm deep.

Our timber frames are all supplied by local Australian-owned companies using the best of materials. All products comply with Australian standards as set by Australian agriculture and water resources, all logging due diligence is met to Australian standards and all country of origin timber declaration is met to confirm chain of custody.

Our acoustic art includes an aluminium split batten (unframed) and security fixtures (framed) that connects to the panels track profile which is compatible with Gyprock and masonry fixings.

WHISPERPIN

WhisperPin® is a fabric-covered acoustic pinboard, perfect for areas where noise negatively affects the sound environment.

HOW IT WORKS

Each acoustic pinboard panel contains an acoustic absorber. The soundwaves pass through the outer skin of fabric, through to the infill where the sound energy is absorbed.

The panels are constructed with a patented polymer tracking system that eliminates the use of adhesives, nails, tacks, or tape while maintaining constant rigidity. This system enables tightly stretching our commercial grade fabric over the acoustic absorbers to create the acoustic pinboard. The framework can therefore be re-used by changing the fabric ‘skin’ if a change of decoration is required.
