MESSAGE

The level of fulfillment and inspiration I feel for this school and for everyone connected to Mater Dei is an unexplainable sense of joy I have never felt before, and something I carry into my ministry every day.� President Andy Morris Dear Alumni and Friends, As I write this piece for my first Red and Gold publication, the two emotions that continue to overwhelm me are excitement and gratitude. I am first and foremost excited to have started this new ministry at Mater Dei Catholic High School, and to dedicate my professional life to all of our students, faculty and staff, alumni and friends, stakeholders, and everyone committed to the mission and legacy of Mater Dei. The level of fulfillment and inspiration I feel for this school and for everyone connected to Mater Dei is an unexplainable sense of joy I have never felt before, and something I carry into my ministry every day.

I am also most grateful for the people of Mater Dei. The faculty and staff (or Mater Dei family as I refer to them) have been the most welcoming group of individuals I have ever had the pleasure of working with in my professional life. I also cannot thank Dr. Tad Dickel enough for not only his long tenure and commitment to Mater Dei as teacher, principal and as president, but also his continued commitment to Mater Dei and

to me to ensure a smooth transition in the leadership of the school. Tad has certainly shown his love and commitment to Mater Dei into the next generation of leadership, and that certainly inspires me as I work with the entire Mater Dei community to build on the next era of success.

Finally, and certainly not in the least, I am most grateful to God for blessing me with this calling to serve YOU, the entire Mater Dei community as we climb to new heights together. Mater Dei will always continue to strive for excellence in academics and the arts, athletics and extracurriculars, while ALWAYS maintaining our core mission – providing a faith-based and spirit-filled environment, rooted in Catholic Tradition.

LUKE HASSLER ‘11

by Kristine Schroeder lessed Pier Frassati and St. John Paul II are two people Father Luke Hassler considers stellar Catholic models. Both had an unwavering devotion to the Blessed Mother and the Eucharist, both were men of great holiness, and both cared deeply about the poor. As Father Luke stated when speaking about these men, “Holiness is for everyone. Holiness is for the here and now.”

The third of three boys, his mother Clare (Becker) ‘82 and father Lynn ’82 graduated from Mater Dei High School, as did he and his two older brothers, Nathan ’06 and Jake ’08. All are in some area of service work. Mom is a nurse, Dad owns Lynn’s Westside Marine, and his brothers are Evansville police officers.

Father Luke attended Westside Catholic through 5th grade and graduated from St. Philip’s after his parents moved to the far Westside. In high school, Father Luke played football for four years and basketball his freshman year. He wrestled his senior year and was a class representative his junior year. Because of an interest he developed in mechanics while working for his father during the summers, he attended Southern Indiana Career and Technological School half days his junior and senior year with the intent of becoming a boat mechanic. He still fixes his own car.

However, he stated that after high school, “Curiosity got the best of me.” He decided to spend a year at Bishop Simon Brute College in Indianapolis to discern whether the priesthood was his true calling.

Father Luke stated, “I fell in love with the place and felt it was right for me.” He added that he enjoyed the community of men

studying and the discernment time afforded him in this setting. At the end of his first year, he determined that he was on the path God had set for him.

Father Luke mentioned other subtle influences that directed him toward this holy life. In second grade he recalls thinking that “priests were cool” in the way they interacted with people at both his church and school. In his junior year, he attended the Source and Summit Retreat and also One Bread, One Cup Retreat at St. Meinrad.

Both were faith-enriching experiences. Father Jack Durchholz’s comment to Luke during his senior year, “You should be my replacement someday,” was another nudge toward his current choice.

Beside his parents, his grandparents’ deep faith was a significant factor. They attended daily Mass, prayed the Liturgy of the Hours, said a daily rosary and had many religious articles throughout their house. His grandpa Becker “enjoyed talking about things going on in the church.” He also shared with his grandchildren his memories of traveling in France during his stint in the army where he visited many religious sites.

Father Hassler’s parish will be blessed with a man who strives to be charitable in his opinions, listens with compassion to people’s differences, and anticipates being a presence in their daily lives, sharing their

joys and their struggles. One of his main goals, he stated “is to help people have an authentic encounter with Jesus Christ.” He is the Parochial Vicar for Sts. Peter and Paul in Haubstadt, St. James in Haubstadt, and Holy Cross in Fort Branch.

As a seminarian, Father Luke had the unique opportunity to meet Pope Francis.

During study in Rome, he and his fellow seminarians were informed that they were to show up for Christmas Mass rehearsal. He said, “We knew we might serve.” Upon arrival at St. Peter’s, he was informed that he was to carry the cross in the entrance procession (his height was likely a factor) at the Christmas Mass. What an honor! Meeting the Pope, Father Luke admitted that he was awed. “I didn’t know what to say. In bad Italian, I told him I was praying for him. He thanked me.”

He encourages young men to consider the priesthood. “Look at the surveys,” he stated. “The priesthood ranks high as a path to a happy life.” He urges young men who hear a call to “Go for it. Check it out. Spend a year in the seminary.” Whether or not a young man determines to stay or choose another path, “It is never a waste of time. The seminary helped me discover my strengths and weaknesses.” That is a positive for anyone.

On ordination day, each new priest had a Bible passage on his holy card. Father Luke chose the words of St. Peter, “Master,

to whom shall we go? You have the words of everlasting life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.” (John 6:6869)

Father Luke commented, “The biggest job that my generation is charged with is evangelization.”

He referred to a quote frequently attributed to Archbishop Fulton Sheen (who will be canonized in October). “There are not over a 100 people in the United States who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions, however, who hate what they perceive to be the Catholic Church.”

In response to that thought, Father Hassler stated, “My main challenge as a priest is conveying the beauty of our Catholic faith.” Father Luke believes that if people truly understood the teachings of the church, the pews would be full. His sees this as his mission and is wasting no time in accepting that responsibility. Our Church is blessed to have him.

Luckily, after being invited to a Bible study by a friend, Schroeder continued to attend this study, growing closer to the Lord. Schroeder befriended many missionaries with FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students). He heard God’s call and prayed about it, finally deciding to join the FOCUS staff.

As a team director and missionary, Schroeder spends time with students, helping them to become closer to God. He teaches his fellow teammates how to talk with students and spread the Gospel. Schroeder leads mission trips as well and aknowledges that there are difficulties in being a missionary.

“A difficult part is knowing the emptiness that the world offers and the fullness that Jesus offers and seeing someone reject that,” Schroeder said.

However, this shows Schroeder that he is powerless while the Holy Spirit is strong.

Schroeder believes watching people give their lives to Jesus makes everything worth it.

The goal of the Mater Dei Service Program is to offer meaningful service experiences that allow our students to make a positive and lasting impact on the community.”

Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve As students enter Mater Dei High School, they are immediately challenged by the precept “Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve.” This call to action is an integral part of the learning experience at Mater Dei, as we believe that service to the community is a key aspect in learning and living the lessons taught by Jesus throughout the Gospels.

In August, the Theology department rolled out a new program that focuses on three categories of service: • Service to the students Parish or Church • Service to the greater Evansville community/outreach • Service to the Mater Dei community Along with the new program, Mater Dei has incorporated the use of MobileServe, a mobile service tracking app, to keep track of both individual and school-wide hours of service. Through the use of the app,

students can track hours and look up service opportunities throughout the surrounding communities.

The mobile app will be used by the students over their four years at Mater Dei. The app provides the opportunity to track hours and create reports that will be helpful when applying for college and scholarships their senior year.

However, the main goal of the service program is for the students to put their faith into action by helping those in need. As Pope Francis tells us, “This loving care for the less privileged is presented as a characteristic trait of God, and is likewise required, as a moral duty, of all those who would belong to his people,”

We experienced a wonderful Thanksgiving prayer service Nov. 26, and we appreciate Mrs. Jeanne Thomas ‘81 and student council for organizing such an impactful service opportunity. Our Mater Dei Family brought in 4,200 cans and over $800 to be donated to Ozanam Family Shelter and St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry plus 200 boxes of stuffing for the Evansville Rescue Mission’s Thanksgiving baskets.

At the end of the prayer service, Mrs. Thomas presented Mrs. Toni Wallace with a banner to recognize all of the hard work that she and last year’s Dance Marathon committee did for Riley Children’s Hospital, which earned the group the Bronze Level Award.

INITIATIVE In 2018, Jeremy Herrmann visited and spoke to the students about the education he received at Mater Dei that helped him to become a Congenital Cardiac Surgeon at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis.

by Mallory (Goebel) Hertel ‘07 rothers Jeremy and Scott Herrmann are leading the efforts to raise funds for our students to attend the Deaconess Health Science Institute (HSI) each summer. Applicants are often recommended by their teachers as juniors and must write an essay and be interviewed by several local teachers who help organize HSI. Only 28 local students are chosen to attend the 2-week institute that is held in the former Deaconess School of Nursing.

Students accepted into the program attend lectures by local health care providers and are given the opportunity to shadow a surgeon in the operating room, observe a birth or are taught emergency procedures by medical

The HSI program requires students selected to cover the costs associated with attending. To provide the opportunity to more students so that finances are not a factor if accepted, Jeremy and Scott, both former attendees, would like to help cover all or most of the costs associated with attending.

Inspired by the Herrmann brothers’ initiative, the Office of Institutional

Advancement invites the community to help support this project for years to come in raising funds to establish an endowment with the school. Once established, this endowment will help offset and, hopefully one day cover, the cost associated with sending students selected to attend this program.

Science teacher Carl Voegel sees the benefits of such a program and hopes to see success in the fundraising initiative.

“There are many, many job shadowing opportunities provided within the HSI each year, and it has been an eye opening experience for the many students who have attended and gone on to their own professional careers,” Voegel said.

MEMBERSHIP embership in Mater Dei High School’s chapter is an honor bestowed upon deserving students by the faculty and shall be based on the criteria of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. In April of each year, all students who are eligible scholastically (i.e., candidates) shall be notified and asked to complete and submit the candidate application. Applications are due in early May. Notification letters will be mailed over the summer, with Induction in early August.

All teachers complete an evaluation second semester of each applicant’s leadership, service, and character as witnessed in and outside of the classroom. A committee of administrators, campus minister, athletic director, and two department chairs will make the final membership selections. The chapter adviser(s) will serve as a nonvoting member.

To be considered for membership, a student must demonstrate/ provide the following: • Minimum G.P.A of 3.7 • Two teacher signatures supporting your application to NHS • As a junior, a student must be enrolled in and complete at least one college credit and/or advanced placement course. As a senior, a student must be enrolled in and complete at least two college credit and/or advanced placement courses.

• A 30 second or less video of yourself explaining why you want to become a member of the National Honor Society. The video may be serious or humorous, but you must be well groomed and presentable.

• A resume (complete with names and contact information for sponsors, coaches, etc.) of your school and community involvement, demonstration of leadership, and any work experience over your high school career

WELCOME alumni return home Tara (Elpers) Wayne ‘05, Database Manager Tara joined the Mater Dei staff in February and is responsible for maintaining accurate records for alumni and friends, managing solicitations, providing class lists for reunions, and acknowledging donations. Tara is married to Billy ‘04, and they are the parents of Ayden (6), Noah (5), Lexi (2).

RENOVATION

The original boys locker room received a major renovation during the spring and summer months. This project was made possible by donations from Tom ‘65 and Debbie Borries, Annual Fund donors, and a dedicated group of volunteers including Ray Gries ‘63, Jerry Kirchoff ‘70, Tom Knapp ‘67, Vernie Luigs, Kenny Miller ‘75, Tom Wilson, and Al Weinzapfel ‘55.

The project was supervised by maintenance managers Dennis Niemeier and Steve Luigs. This renovation follows the girls locker room renovation that occurred last summer.

The last renovation of the boys locker room occurred in the late 1980s.

Our Open House event was a success! The event’s theme was “Enhance Your Vision: Choose Mater Dei in 2020,” and 70 students took advantage of preregistration with a total of 101 families in attendance. Each family received a packet of information, a look book, a game board, sunglasses and a notepad. They visited the “activity fair” and toured the school, visiting classrooms and engaging in subject specific activities. Principal Darin Knight presented “The Value of a Mater Dei Education” and Mrs. Shea Reneer and Mrs. Darlene Quinlin answered college prep questions. Families also had the opportunity to talk with Business Manager Karen Liley about tuition assistance.

“Since the car battery was located under the floor of the front passenger side, the flooring had to be cut so the battery could be taken out during the winter.”

After the much needed makeover, it was suggested that Joe paint the car with polka dots. “The inspiration came from the song, ‘Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini,’” and the new design was born. “I drew every polka dot on that car by tracing a silver dollar. Many friends helped paint the dots with black paint unless they screwed up and were taken off duty.”

Joe and friends would spend Sunday

afternoons painting in the dots on the car. Once the makeover was complete, everyone began to refer to Betsy as Polka Dot, and that’s what Joe and his friends knew it as during their time with the car.

Joe drove the Polka Dot from 1959 until he graduated from Mater Dei in 1961. The last time he drove the car was in the fall of 1963 when he winterized the vehicle. In February of 1964, Joe was inducted into the United States Army.

For years, the Polka Dot remained in the Rettig family until its last ride. Joe’s family owned the old Warrenton General Store that eventually the family converted to a restaurant and is now the famed Log Inn in Haubstadt, IN (Joe’s family still owns the restaurant). A parade was held in May of 1965 for the Grand Opening of the Log Inn. Joe’s sister, Marilyn ‘65, was set to drive the Polka Dot in the parade.

“Unknown to her, there was no water in the radiator since the car had been winterized and sat for two years in storage.

With no water in the radiator, the engine, once started, seized and never ran again.”

The Polka Dot sat in storage for years until it was sold at auction.

According to Joe, it is not known who purchased the Polka Dot at auction. The title of the car was never located, so the title, on record, remained in the name of Joe’s father. Someone in Paducah, Kentucky had acquired the vehicle and made it into continued on next page

continued from previous page a hot rod with a Buick engine. A person from Ft. Branch eventually purchased the car and informed Daryl Elpers, Joe’s nephew, that he had the car. This excited Daryl, and he purchased the car to have it back in the Rettig-Elpers family.

The car was no longer painted with black polka dots, but it was now a highly finished hot rod. Daryl still owns the car to this day.

Through all the years and transformations, the “Polka Dot” was probably the most distinct phase for the old 1936 Chevy. “People don’t remember me but they definitely remember the car,” Joe said.

Joe said his favorite was when he “was on the baseball team, and for whatever reason, the bus didn’t show up for us to go to the game. So we all piled in the Polka Dot (10-12 of us) and Len Will, but I think the rest of them [went] in the drivers ed car. We then headed off to Lamasco Field.

On our way to the game on Franklin St., we were waiting for some ladies to cross the street. I accidentally hit the horn and scared the ladies half to death. This all happened to occur across the street from a police officer. He pulled me over and said I had too many kids in the car and had to get rid of them. We told him we were from Mater Dei and didn’t have another way to get everyone to the game. He chewed me out a bit but ended up letting us go on our way. We ended up winning the game.”

Dear Mater Dei High School community,

I feel extremely grateful to have served at Mater Dei for the last fifteen years. Mater Dei is a special place with talented students, supportive parents, dedicated faculty and staff, engaged pastors, and generous alumni and friends who work in partnership to ensure a vibrant Catholic education is readily available to form the lives of young men and women.

When I heard about a band and choir job opening in 2004, I didn’t know much about the school. I started to learn more about the school and was impressed by the tremendous successes in academics and athletics. I knew there must be something special about the school, and I was also eager to work in a Catholic school.

As I look back on my time as president, principal, and teacher, I am proud of all we have been able to accomplish as a school: • When I was the band director in 2006, the Marching Wildcats went to State Finals for the first time in school history and became the smallest band to ever qualify in Indiana. It has been very gratifying to see the marching band grow and continue their success with numerous appearances at State.

• I directed Fiddler on the Roof in 2007, and we had a very talented group who really poured their hearts into a special production. The theatre program continues to perform even better plays and musicals each year.

• As the president in 2011, we initiated Mater Dei’s first strategic planning process. This effort led to a vision to transform the campus and facilities.

• In 2012, we kicked off the $4 million Full of Grace: Excellence for Tomorrow Capital Campaign that led to improvements on campus and raised over $5 million.

I will miss being around the energy of our students and watching them grow into young men and women. We have built upon a strong foundation of Catholic identity and faith formation, and we have achieved extremely high levels of academic, extracurricular, and athletic success. When funds were raised for Mater Dei to be built in the 1940s, there was no single major donor that came forward. Instead, the entire community came together to support the effort. They believed so strongly in the importance of having a Catholic high school on the westside of Evansville that they donated their time, talent, and treasure.

That same spirit was especially evident during the Full of Grace Capital Campaign and continues at Mater Dei. We need to recognize that we are all responsible for sustaining the great gift of Mater Dei High School. My prayers are with the Mater Dei community during this time of transition.

LIBBY (FUNKE) LUFF ‘01 is the Activities and Marketing Director at Nossi College of Art in Nashville, TN. She was recently recognized as one of the 2019 Nashville Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 award winners. She also has received the Excellence in Student Services Award from the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. She serves on the Music City Chef Throwdown committee, a Martha O’Bryan Center fundraiser, now in its fifth year. She and her husband, Timothy Luff, live in downtown Nashville.

They enjoy kayaking and have traveled more than 150 miles of rivers in Tennessee.

Libby is the daughter of Kathy (Will) Funke ‘65 and V. Raymond Funke ‘60 NATHAN WRIGHT ‘13 received his undergrad at the University of Southern Indiana in 2015 and then went to chiropractic school at Logan University in Chesterfield, MO. He graduated as a Doctor of Chiropractic in 2018 Cum Laude. During this time, he was also licensed in Acupuncture. Nathan opened Wright Chiropractic and Acupuncture at 2305 W. Franklin St. at the beginning of 2019. His youngest patient to date was 1 week old and current oldest patient is 99 years old. Nathan is an assistant coach for football and provides chiropractic services for student athletes at MD. He grew up and currently resides in St. Philip.

SYDNEY SEGER ‘15 graduated with honors from Indiana

University Southeast in May. Before graduation, she won the Jim Morris, Champion of Character Award. This award is given annually during the Champions Dinner and is dedicated in the name of former men’s basketball head coach and athletic director Jim Morris. This is the highest award presented to a student-athlete at the school. Seger was nominated and voted for by the IUS Athletic Department Staff. This past August, she gave a presentation about what athletics and her education have done for her over her tenure at IUS. Seger majored in Biology, with minors in Chemistry, Microbiology. Currently, she is working at Deaconess Gateway Orthopedic and Neuroscience Hospital and has applied to the Master’s of Physician Assistant programs with the hope to begin graduate study in January 2020.

Al & Darlene graduated in 1955, and all of their children and many of the grandchildren graduated from Mater Dei. Both are still active volunteers at Mater Dei and often attend many of the athletic activities to cheer on the Wildcats.

Gary and I started working when Janice Goebel asked for help one evening. We enjoyed it so much we just continued to help. We liked being involved at Mater Dei and seeing the students and fans. Since Gary and I, along with our sons, daughterin-law and two of our grandchildren are all Mater Dei graduates we knew so many of the students and adults attending either volleyball or girls or boys basketball.

We currently have two grandchildren attending Mater Dei, Jacob, a junior and Joey, a freshman. Both boys are involved in sports, and since these years will pass so quickly, we thought it would be a good time to enjoy watching them from the bleachers.

We enjoyed our time and have lots of memories but feel it’s time to let someone else take our place­--although I’m sure we’ll still be around.

MARGARET AND RANDY PLOCH It was 25 years ago when I began helping Janice in the concession stand. She and I have been friends for about 40 years, so when she asked me to help her out I agreed.

When the concession stand moved to where it is now and we added grilled items to the menu, Randy started helping as well. I didn’t think I would be volunteering for this long, but I have enjoyed it so much.

Meeting new friends, seeing the students and teachers all changing and growing through the years, those are the reasons Randy and I have enjoyed working so much in the Mater Dei concession stand. Every athletic season was a new, fun experience, although volleyball was my favorite to watch during breaks of customers.

I turned 75 this last November and decided 25 years seems like a nice round number to end on. Now is our time to enjoy watching instead of

Many family and friends of loved ones who have passed choose to designate gifts made at the funeral home in their memory to Mater Dei High School through the Mater Dei Annual Fund. Mater Dei accepts gifts which are restricted for a specific program or purpose, in addition to unrestricted gifts which are made available to assist with current school priorities. CARL W. MANN SR. Of Evansville, March 30, 2019. Surviving Carl are three daughters, Susanne Walters. Michelle Tenbarge, Melanie Holmes; three sons, Carl W. Mann, II, Kimberly Mann and Miles Mann; twelve grandchildren and several great grandchildren, some of which attended Mater Dei. Carl was an active member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, now Annunciation Parish. In memory of Carl’s passing his family requested contributions be made to Mater Dei High School for tuition assistance.

BETTY SUE SCHELLER Of Evansville, March 26, 2019. Surviving Betty are three daughters, Patti Beaty ‘76, Mary Beth Jones ‘80, Amy Scheller ‘90; two sons, Bob Scheller ‘77 and Steven Scheller ’84. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the St. Ann's Altar Society, and the recipient of the Brute Award recognizing her outstanding model of Christian stewardship.
