Mater Dei Today Supermileage Team wins AutoZone contest Congratulations to the Mater Dei Supermileage Team for winning the grand prize in the AutoZone Show It Off, America social media contest in Memphis, Tenn., which recognized the best do-it-yourself automotive projects in the country.

Mater Dei students won the grand prize for their made from scratch Eco-Car which features an aluminum tube frame, carbon fiber body, and four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes and is powered by a 50cc fuel-injected gasoline engine.

It took the team of students ten months to complete their project, often getting parts and advice from their local AutoZone store.

According to the AutoZone media release, “The small vehicle, able to carry one adult-sized person and a suitcase, is quite a showstopper. In fact, the ultra-fuelefficient car, able to get 849 miles per gallon and set a new record in this year’s Shell Eco-marathon Americas competition, surpasses last year’s efficiency record of 238 miles per gallon.”

The Supermileage team received a Duralast® 392-piece tool cabinet valued at $2,500 and will participate in activities this year that showcase the winning vehicle.

AutoZone invited two team members, seniors Kyle Haas and Jared Schapker, and one of the advisors, Bob Niesen, to display the car in Memphis at their National Trade

Show. Two more students along with Mr. Niesen were invited to The Grand Prix of Houston, Tex. Michael Kercher, junior, and Ethan Vibbert, senior, attended the threeday event showing off the car in one of Shell’s tents. Incredibly, the car took a parade lap on the course before every race.

To re-cap their past season, four cars including the team’s newest addition, an Urban car, were taken to the competition in Houston. At the Shell Eco-Marathon, two of these achieved a first place prize while the other two came in a close second. The Urban car broke the Eco-marathon America’s class record at an outstanding 849.2 mpg.

The other first place vehicle, the electric car, added solar panels for this year’s competition.

The new Urban car and some students and advisors were invited to Roger Penske’s pre-race banquet at the Indy 500 shortly after the Eco-marathon. Helio Castronevez and Roger Penske were among the notable attendees who were able to see the creation first hand. Shell then invited students and advisors to an NHRA event in Indianapolis.

The Urban car sitting front and center at the race, received much attention. Shawn Landon and Khalid alBalooshi, members of the successful Al-anabi racing team, even took turns sitting in the car!

Mater Dei Today Angela’s Ashes Service Project gives back to those in need Students in Mrs. Lee Ann West and Mrs. Kristyn Gabbart’s English 12 classes were charged with a Service Learning Project while reading Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt.

in Ireland. The hope was that by reading his story, students would be encouraged to give back to their community and people in need.”

Students submitted a project proposal with the service they planned to provide and necessary details about how they would complete the project. Students were also

required to write a reflective essay about their project and make a video clip advocating for the association with which they had worked.

Both teachers were very pleased with the students’ work on the service project, and Mrs. West shared, “Some of these students did some really extraordinary things!”

SMILE is the sponsor of the annual Buddy Walk that many Mater Dei students participate in every year.

Other senior service projects included Kayla Schoettlin who

Senior Emily Burnett made pillows and blankets for children with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). She was inspired by her family to initiate this project—two of her brothers were diagnosed with SMA. Emily’s pillows and blankets will be sent to newly diagnosed SMA children all over the country. Emily stated, “It was cool to give back to other families. I really enjoyed doing this.”

Sarah Claybon, senior, tutored elementary age kids at the Dream Center, an after school program for at-risk students. She enjoyed spending a couple of hours each week helping children learn. “It was fun helping the kids, and I learned to appreciate school more,” she said.

Senior Maria Schweizer volunteered at SMILE on Down Syndrome, an organization that assists children with Down’s. She helped children learn the alphabet and provided instruction in several different areas.

Maria discovered “Everyone has their differences. It’s good to step away from yours and help others.”

Mater Dei football coach Mike Goebel was named the Colts/NFL “Coach of the Week” this past October after an undefeated regular season.

The Wildcats have not had an undefeated season since 2001. Coach Goebel is 168-49 in his seventeenth season at Mater Dei. Mike Prior, the Colts’ Youth Football Commissioner, presented the award to Coach Goebel with the

Mater Dei football team in attendance. After receiving the award, Coach Goebel directed his attention to the football team stating, “This award is your award.”

The Mater Dei Athletic Department will receive a $2,000 grant—$1,000 from the NFL Foundation and $1,000 from Athem Blue Cross and Blue Shield—for Coach Goebel being named “Coach of the Week.”

Mater Dei Today Dual Credit and Advanced Placement courses pave the way to college Mater Dei currently offers 15 dual credit courses in six different disciplines through the University of Southern Indiana and Ivy Tech College. Dual Credit courses earn students college credit hours while in high school.

Mater Dei also offers advanced placement courses in five different disciplines: AP English I & II, AP Calculus, AP Biology, AP Chemistry and AP Spanish IV. Advanced Placement courses are nationally known for their rigor and prepare students for the challenge of college.

Each AP course syllabus must be approved by the national College Board, so what is being taught in an AP class at Mater Dei is similar to what is being taught in other high schools in the country. The instructor of an AP class also has to be approved by the College Board.

This past October approximately 250 grandparents joined their grandchildren for the first Grandparent Day Mass at Mater Dei. A reception followed the mass where grandparents had their pictures taken with their grandchildren and enjoyed refreshments.

The celebrant for the Mass was Fr. Chris Droste, a 1998 Mater Dei graduate. After an overwhelmingly positive response, plans are for the Grandparent Day Mass to become an annual event.

What this means is that each year Mater Dei has projects and programs necessary for the success of the student body and upkeep of facilities which are not fully funded by annual tuition income. Through the generosity of our Annual Fund donors (1,727 donations in 2012–13) the success of our students today is made possible and helps ensure the success of our students tomorrow.

It means students sit in chairs that don’t pinch their back because the plastic is broken, or while they conduct research on the Internet their connection is strong and speedy, that their classes are full because more students can attend because of available tuition assistance, and so much more.

Due to our focus on educating the “whole person,” Mater Dei alumni are truly better people for their experiences in high school. Parents want their children to have the best possible education, and they actively choose an environment that is safe, disciplined and provides individual attention.

■ In the summer of 2011, we established an Enrollment Manager position to work more closely with families and better promote Mater Dei to our feeder schools and the greater community. Since that time, we have increased the percentage of our feeder school 8th graders that continue their Catholic education at Mater Dei to nearly 80% after dropping below 70% a few years ago. We have also attracted a small number of students from outside the feeder schools.

■ We are committed to providing families that desire a Catholic education but lack the means to afford one. Our partnership with the Catholic Education Foundation has enabled us to allocate over $200,000 to families with demonstrated financial need this school year. In addition, Indiana’s relatively new school choice programs are also providing opportunities through the Choice Scholarship Program (voucher) and the Scholarship Tax Credit Program.

Capital Campaign Update Full of Grace: Excellence for Tomorrow kickoff event The Full of Grace: Excellence for Tomorrow Capital Campaign community kickoff took place September 18, 2013, to a large crowd of friends and alumni of Mater Dei High School.

Dr. Tad Dickel, President of Mater Dei, provided an overview of the

projects targeted in the campaign, and guests attended the groundbreaking for the Circle of Faith Prayer Garden. Later, they enjoyed a tour of the new Media Center and LIFE Resource room, two Capital Campaign projects that were completed over the past summer.

L.I.F.E. resource room With increasing enrollment in the L.I.F.E. (Learning Is For Everyone) Resource program at Mater Dei, a new classroom designed specifically for this program became a priority project in the Full of Grace: Excellence for Tomorrow Capital Campaign.

This past summer, a classroom was refurbished to better accommodate the needs of the resource program.

The new resource room consists of two areas—a room where basic skills development classes are held and a testing room. The basic skills room now has ten laptop computer stations, seven study carrels, and study tables for seating up to sixteen. In this area, resource teacher Jennifer Lintzenich re-teaches and reviews material from general education classes, and the students work on material from these classes in this space.

In the past, these rooms were combined which made it difficult to carry out both roles of the resource program, testing accommodations and general education support.

According to Ms. Lintzenich, “I am now finally able to re-teach and review material without disturbing those who are studying or testing. Separating these two areas has been a dream of mine for the resource program for quite awhile. It is extremely difficult to do two very different jobs in the same space.”

The former room not only lacked the space to provide services to the growing number of resource students, it also lacked a cohesive relaxing atmosphere that now exists in the new facilities.

Ms. Lintzenich is not the only one who is excited about the new resource room. She shared, “I really enjoyed seeing the students’ faces as they saw the new facilities for the first time. It was almost as if they were saying ’they did all of this for us?’ They love the space, the computer stations, and the separate testing area.”

Field of Dreams Another project of the Full of Grace: Excellence for Tomorrow Capital Campaign that is currently underway is a dedicated baseball field. In the past, both football and baseball shared the same field. In the spring of 2012, 38,000 cubic yards of donated dirt were hauled to raise the level of the lower field next to the football turf so it could serve as the baseball field.

The new field will have red clay dirt for the infield areas, a Bermuda grass field, brick dugouts, brick façade concrete knee wall, and irrigation.

Construction and grading began this past fall, and the field should be ready for the spring baseball season.

Capital Campaign Update Renovated Media Center a popular gathering place The Mater Dei Media Center, originally known as the school library, was renovated this past summer as part of the Full of Grace: Excellence for Tomorrow Capital Campaign.

The Media Center existed in its original state from the time the school was built in 1949 until the renovation. New walls, ceiling, carpet and lighting were added along with custom-made solid wood bookshelves and cabinets, and the area doubled in size.

In addition, a sliding glass window was inserted for circulating library materials making it easier for students to check materials in and out.

Two large flat screen televisions were mounted on the walls for presentations and morning news programs.

New tables and chairs were purchased. A movable wall was installed that allows separation of the Media Center space into a computer section and a library section during times of peak computer demand. More than 200 new books were added,

and more than 3,000 old books were eliminated. New electrical wiring and connections were installed for easy access for students and guests who bring their own technology. New computers and computer tables were added, so in the Media Center alone there are more than 60 computers available for student use.

Ron Hickman, Mater Dei Media Specialist, shared that the students’ first comments about the new Media Center were “WOW!” and “OMG!”

Mr. Hickman explains, “While there has been no basic change in what the Media Center offers our students, what is offered now that was not offered before is a new look that is warm and pleasant, and more computers are available to meet the increasing demand for technology.”

The Media Center is now a very popular gathering place for students working or just visiting with one another in the mornings before school.

When Mater Dei first welcomed students in 1949, the teaching and administrative staff was comprised primarily of Benedictine sisters. For 64 years they educated students while instilling in them the teachings and values of the Catholic Church.

To acknowledge their dedication and commitment to Mater Dei, the Circle

of Faith Prayer Garden—a project of the Full of Grace: Excellence for Tomorrow Capital Campaign—will be dedicated to the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand, Indiana.

The prayer garden will be located outside the entrance to the Msgr.

Michael Wolf Chapel on the northeast side of the school building. The circular design will have four areas that will fit together forming a cross.

A brick pathway and seating area will provide space for commemorative honors. Trees and foliage will create a quiet and reflective spot

for students and adults.

At the Capital Campaign public kickoff this past September, twelve Benedictine sisters attended the prayer garden groundbreaking ceremony. Sister Barbara Lynn Schmitz, Prioress, Sr. Mary Francis and Sr. Mary Carmel Spayd, who holds the title of the longest serving principal at Mater Dei, participated by turning over the first shovels of dirt.

Sister Barbara Lynn commented, “I can’t think of a better way to remember the gifts shared by our sisters and those with whom they were able to collaborate in the education field. It has been such a blessing for our community to be part of such a great institution.”

Sr. Mary Francis logs off at Mater Dei his past August, the Mater Dei faculty and staff returned to school only to discover that our beloved business teacher, Sr. Mary Francis Williams, OSB, had been called “home” to the monastery in Ferdinand, Ind., to serve on the administrative team of the new prioress.

Sister Mary Francis had taught at Mater Dei for 46 years, the longest tenure of any teacher at Mater Dei to date. She began her teaching career in 1962 in Dubois County and came to Mater Dei in the fall of 1967 as a business teacher. In the early 1970s, Sister recalls the introduction of computers in the classroom. “Radio Shack computers started to surface and Tom Dick, science teacher and computer guy, decided that we needed to invest in the Apple line. So we purchased five Apple computers plus a modem. We were way ahead of the game at that time thanks to Tom.”

She experienced tremendous changes over 46 years of teaching technology and was always open to the challenge of learning new hardware and software—she had to learn it first in order to teach to her students. In 1967 she was teaching classes such as shorthand, keypunch and data processing, and this last school year she was teaching document formatting, digital communications tools, and computer applications.

Sister wore several hats, or… habits, at Mater Dei. She served as the senior class advisor which involved all senior year activities including commencement, and she was the scorekeeper for both girls’ basketball and volleyball teams since the first teams stepped out on the court in the 1970s. Fortunately, she was able to be part of the girls’ basketball team’s back-to-back state championships in 2012 and 2013.

She holds fond memories of her years teaching at Mater Dei which includes pep assemblies,

May Crowning, guest speakers, and most of all, the students. She remembers when Rex Mundi High School closed and the students that transferred to Mater Dei. “I appreciated getting to know them and think what I would have missed had they not chosen Mater Dei when their school closed.”

Because of her dedication to teaching, Sister was named High School Teacher of the Year by the Evansville Courier & Press in 2009.

Reflecting back on her years at Mater Dei, she shares, “Each year I would look forward to what would comprise my roster. I have had so many experiences in the classroom and in the sports arena. Each season had its great moments. Mater Dei has been a special place for me.”

Football The football team posted an undefeated regular season, 9-0, the fourth in the history of the school, and an overall season record of 11-1. The Cats fell to Southridge, 21-19, in the sectional championship game.

Boys Soccer The boys’ soccer team boasted a sectional championship this season.

Volleyball The volleyball team captured sectional and regional championships and advanced to semi-state play where they were defeated by Providence High School.

Girls Cross Country Girls’ cross country qualified for sectional, regional, and semi-state competiton.

As a renowned and ground breaking thoracic surgeon, he spoke on how his Catholic high school education impacted his life and career. John is noted for performing many procedures for the first time in the state of Indiana—the first lung transplant in 1989, the first heart and lung transplant in 1989 and the first bilateral lung transplant in 1991. He, and his wife, Cindy ’68 (Funke), live in Indianapolis.

A new American Legion Post in Evansville is being named after the husband of Barbara Wargel Babb ’85, Marine Sgt. Brock Babb, who was killed in Iraq in 2006. The Brock Babb Post #324 will be temporarily located in the Veteran’s Office at the University of Southern Indiana. In October of 2006, Brock was traveling with four other Marines in an armored Humvee in the Anbar province of Iraq when a roadside bomb exploded. He had previously served in the first Iraq War but re-enlisted in 2004. Brock, who was 40, had been in Iraq just two weeks when he was killed.

According to an article in the Evansville Courier and Press, Brock was “a real hero, an absolute hero, within the military and the community. Brock is what every guy wants to become one day.”

Jim Schroeder ’95 has written and published his second book. According to Jim, Into the Rising Sun is a chronicle of a journey, both as one individual in pursuit of a calling and one family in search of the truth.

Robin (Fehrenbacher) Rosbrugh ’06 is living in Clinton, Ind., and is the rehabilitation services manager and occupational therapy assistant at Clinton Gardens. She is married to Tyler Rosbrugh.

Dan Schrader ’98 is a lieutenant in the U.S. Coast Guard and serves as a Search and Rescue helicopter pilot in Traverse City, Mich. He married Rebecca Ann Bulla Schrader in April 2013.

Philip Rawley ’97 was named a “20 under 40” up and coming community leader by the Evansville Business Journal. Phil is the Chief Executive Officer for Tri-State Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Crystal Spivey Wildeman ’99 received the 2013 Defense Trial Counsel Young Lawyer Award. She is an associate with Kahn Dees Donovan & Kahn law firm. Crystal graduated from Indiana University with a degree in Criminal Justice and earned her J.D. from DePaul College of Law. Crystal is married to Brian Wildeman ’99. They have a daughter and are expecting another child in the spring.

Hallie Denstorff ’04 was named principal of St. Wendel Catholic School in Evansville. Hallie previously taught at Holy Rosary Catholic School.

Friends & Alumni News Kyle Hartz ’03 and Lindsey (Buchanan) Hartz ’01, along with their son Grady, welcomed their second child, Elodie, this past May. Kyle is an automotive technician at Expressway Chevrolet in Mt. Vernon and Lindsey is the communications director at the YWCA.

2010s Austin Knapp ’12 was studying at Harlaxton College in England this past semester, and his parents, Eddie ’85 and Jackie ’85 Knapp, and his grandparents, Ed ’59 and Judy ’60 Knapp, visited him. As they toured Europe, they found this boat in Howth, Ireland!

Jenna Denstorff ’05 is a teacher and assistant volleyball coach at Providence High School. When the Mater Dei volleyball team advanced to semi-state play against Providence this season, Jenna found herself coaching against her alma mater.

“Coaching the semi-state volleyball championship game against Mater Dei was definitely one of the hardest games to coach,” Jenna said. Providence won semi-state and went on to win state defeating Hammond Bishop Noll.

Mackenzie Riggs ’07 is a registered nurse currently living in California. She has volunteered with the Catholic Medical Mission Board.

In February she will be going to Guaimaca, Honduras for a year to work with the less fortunate providing needed healthcare.

Friends & Alumni News One man’s journey to Mater Dei Mater Dei has a long history of loyalty from students, parents, alumni, and friends, and Jim Birk ’55 served as a shining example of that loyalty when he was a student at Mater Dei. Jim was the youngest of four children of a family that lived on the west side of Evansville. His three older siblings attended Reitz Memorial High School because Mater Dei did not exist at the time. So when it was time for Jim to attend high school, he

He would ride to work with his father, leaving at 6:00 a.m. for Cook’s Brewery in downtown Evansville where Jim’s dad was employed. He would then walk several blocks to catch a city bus to Mater Dei. Jim would arrive at school very early—even before the school custodian. At the end of the school day, he would take a city bus back downtown and walk to Cook’s and ride home with his father.

It was one of the few times I ever stood up to my parents, but I was determined to stay at Mater Dei.” was able to attend the new Catholic high school on the west side of Evansville that been open for a just a couple of years.

In December of his junior year, Jim’s parents decided to move to Newburgh across the street from what is now Castle High School, and they assumed that he would transfer to Memorial on the east side. But Jim explains, “I already had my Mater Dei class ring, my letter jacket and my friends. It was one of the few times I ever stood up

had heard it was illegal to hitchhike in the city. On occasion, his sister Charlene would pick him up from track practice when she got off work in time, but for the most part, Jim depended on the kindness of strangers to get him home to Newburgh.

Jim’s love and loyalty to Mater Dei continues today. He attended the Full of Grace: Excellence for Tomorrow Capital Campaign Kickoff event in September. What prompted Jim to attend was when he read that the Circle of Faith Prayer Garden was being dedicated to the Sisters of St. Benedict who were his teachers at Mater Dei. Jim traveled to the Capital Campaign Kickoff event from Dale, Ind., where he lives. No city buses, no walking, no hitchhiking this time!

Jennifer Tornatta Berry ’00 receives Distinguished Nursing Alumna Award Jennifer Tornatta Berry ’00, adult health nurse practitioner with Community Hospital Oncology Physicians in Indianapolis, is the 2013 recipient of the University of Southern Indiana Distinguished Nursing Alumna Award.

The award recognizes a graduate who has made outstanding achievements in a career or public service. The accolade was presented at the USI Nursing Alumni Society’s annual dinner.

Jennifer completed associate and bachelor degrees in

nursing at the University of Southern Indiana and a Master of Science degree in nursing at Indiana University. She has worked as an adult health nurse practitioner with an oncology focus since 2008.

In her current role as an oncology nurse practitioner with the Community Health Network, she manages various aspects of cancer patients’ care, including intravenous and oral chemotherapy, radiation therapy, long-term effects of therapy, and all other medical management issues associated with oncology treatment in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

In 2010, Jennifer was named Nurse of the Year by the Chicago chapter of the Leukemia Research Foundation and was the 2008 Outstanding Master’s Student at the Indiana University School of Nursing.

Students attend Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholders meeting The Berkshire Hathaway (BH) Annual Meeting brings tens of thousands of people to Omaha, Neb. each spring. This past spring, a group from Mater Dei High School made the trip out west to experience one of the most unique corporate Annual Meetings for shareholders.

Gerald Nurrenbern, a past parent, planned and funded the trip. Gerald has made the trip to Omaha for the Annual Meeting before and knew it would be a great experience for the business students. “Where else can one person have the opportunity to hear from so many experienced business people and see all of the types of companies someone can invest? The young men who came on this trip represented themselves and Mater Dei so well,” commented Gerald.

Thank you to all who supported the Mater Dei Annual Fund last year. Each year a needs assessment is conducted to determine the areas requiring improvement and upgrading.

The following were the projects targeted for the 2012–13 Annual Fund and how the dollars were distributed:

Tuition Assistance $85,000 Funding that helped students afford a Catholic education at Mater Dei

Capital Reserve $50,000 A reserve was established several years ago to provide for large capital expenditures and protect the school from unexpected maintenance expenses

Replace Computer Graphics/AutoCAD Lab $25,000 This lab is used for college credit courses in computer graphics and drafting; desktop computers were replaced

Ave Maria Society: New Endowments Named in honor of our patroness, the Virgin Mary, the Ave Maria Society was created to recognize and thank those families and individuals who support Mater Dei High School by means of a planned gift or endowment.

Planned giving is a way to arrange a charitable gift now that ultimately becomes future support for Mater Dei High School. These gifts will assist with the long-term needs of the school with the single goal of providing the same high level of education of which many prior generations can attest.

New Endowments Created in 2012-13: Alan and Mary Jane (Muensterman) ’52 Dale† Endowment—Established for Mater Dei educational and spiritual needs.

Michelle Diane Greenwell Memorial Scholarship— Established by Kenneth E. and Diana G. Arbary for high school and college scholarships.

James ’61 and Sandra (Runau) ’63 Weinzapfel Endowment—Established in honor of Matthew J. and Olivia C. Weinzapfel for tuition assistance for families with four or more children in high school.

Monsignor William Lautner Endowment— Established for operational needs at Mater Dei.

Marian Educational Outreach Each year since 2000, Marian Educational Outreach (MEO) has provided financial support to the Life Resource program at Mater Dei. Marian Educational Outreach is a non-profit organization and generates its funds from solicitation, grant writing and fundraising efforts.

In 2012–13 MEO provided $20,000 in funding and increased their support to $35,000 for the 2013–14 school year which supplements teacher salaries for a full time resource teacher and a full time teaching assistant.

MEO also supports professional development for Mater Dei and feeder school teachers.

This past school year, MEO teamed with Mater Dei to implement a cumulative project that provides assistive digital devices for students in the Life Resource Program. “Technologically in Touch” promotes independence and self-confidence among students for educational and vocational success beyond high school.

Kurzweil is a unique computer software program that allows textbook, internet, and literature to be input, read, and highlighted to supplement independent learning and is one of many outstanding components of this initiative. Additional components include training for teachers and educational programs for parents.

We sincerely thank them for their generous contribution this past year and for their assistance in helping all students succeed academically.

Robert Bequette In Evansville, November 11, 2012. Survived by wife Joleen, daughter Peggy Murphy ’78, sons Stephen ’74 and Matthew ’83. Bob was a past president of the Evansville Catholic High Schools Board of Trustees, and music was one of his primary interests. At his passing, memorial gifts were made in his name to the MD Music Department.

Dorothy Boots In Evansville, October 1, 2012. Dorothy was the mother of daughters Rebecca Maier ’66, Theresa Helfrich ’69, Tina Wright ’74 and Bridget Dickerson ’89, and sons Larry ’60, Ira Gerard ’72, Tim ’80, and Vincent ’83. The loves of Dorothy’s life were the Catholic faith, her family, her country, and Mater Dei. Gifts were made in her memory to the Ira J. and Dorothy Jane Boots Endowment at Mater Dei High School.

Mildred Debes In Evansville, August 15, 2012. Mildred was survived by her children, Joseph, Charles ’73, Judy Harmon ’74, Patrick ’75, Pamela ’75, Ronald ’76, Philip ’79 and Michael ’83. Because

Catholic education was important to Mildred, at the time of her passing her family requested memorial gifts be made in her name to Mater Dei High School.

Kenny Joe Hoefling ’66 Of Patoka, Ind., January 13, 2013. Survived by his wife, Ruth.

Throughout the years, Mater Dei remained very dear to Kenny, and he maintained his connection as a member of the alumni association. At the time of his passing, memorial gifts were made in his name to the Mater Dei Friends & Alumni Association.

Joe Koewler In Evansville, June 2, 2013. Survived by wife Lucy and sons Stephen ’79 and Kurt ’84. Because Joe was an avid supporter of all Mater Dei sports, his family requested that memorial contributions be made in Joe’s name to Mater Dei High School.

Mary Patry In Paducah, Ky., August 4, 2012. Survived by daughters Linda

Hedenberg, Paula Brown, and Julie McFarland. Mary taught Spanish at Mater Dei for 34 years. In honor of her love and dedication to Mater Dei, memorial gifts were made in her name to the Mater Dei High School Annual Fund.

Rosemary Rooney In Evansville, November 26, 2012. Survived by children Karen McLaughlinn ’80, Keith ’82 and Darlene Quinlin ’83.

Rosemary was a long time Mater Dei Wildcat who could be found in the crowd at athletic events working on her latest quilting project. Her family requested that memorial donations be made in Rosemary’s name to support the Mater Dei girls’ athletic program.

Betty White In Evansville, June 7, 2013. Survived by her husband, Don ’55, and daughter, Susan Townsend ’85. Betty was a supporter of Catholic education and enjoyed sports. Her grandchildren who attend Mater Dei are members of the band, and at the time of her passing memorial contributions were made in her name to support the Mater Dei Marching Band.
