In the fall of 1976, Mrs. Debbie Haton entered Mater Dei as a math teacher.

As a graduate of Reitz Memorial High School and Indiana State University, Debbie has always been a true Indiana girl at heart.

It wasn’t long before students and faculty alike fell in love with Mrs. Haton’s smiling eyes, beautiful laughs, compassionate heart, and her passion for math. Well, maybe some didn’t actually love math that much.

What most students might remember most about Mrs. Haton is her love of math. A graded test from her was a true work of math.

Each question contained many steps, and Mrs. Haton gave points for each step. She meticulously went through each student’s work, giving points for each step. She took a math problem that may have a wrong answer but found what was right with it. This gave students the guidance and confidence they needed to keep trying. When it came time to calculate quarter and semester grades, Mrs. Haton’s “magic math” gave them the points they needed to be successful.

For the past 42 years, students have learned not only the specifics of math but also about life. Sitting in Mrs. Haton’s class, a student might hear stories and learn more about a “teacher’s life.” A little known fact about Mrs. Haton, she never wore the same outfit twice in a school year. This includes jewelry. Students have tried to keep track of her many outfits with no success. Add to her closet of clothes, Mrs. Haton also has a love for motorcycles. Several times in the past, Mrs. Haton has ridden her motorcycle to school on the last day. Priceless.

Debbie Haton is not only a teacher of students; she is a teacher of teachers.

As the math department chair, Debbie has worked with many new teachers and has guided them, helping each to create a foundation of success. She has taught many how to teach effectively, grade critically, and most of all, how to make students into better people. Thank you, Mrs. Haton, for your years of service to Mater Dei High School. Its students, teachers, administrators, and staff are better people because of you. You leave a lasting legacy of compassion and professionalism.

Mapping the

Last school year, the Mesker Park Zoo contacted Mater Dei about “drawing” the whole zoo in parts, and art teacher Mr. Sills accepted the challenge. Mr. Sills’ block 7, drafting and computer aided design, participates in the project during 2nd quarter of first semester and will continue it until completion. So far, the class has finished the mapping and drawings for the family garden and main lot.

This is the second year of the project, and 18 students were involved. The project teaches the students real world experiences, especially since the students received helped from alumnus Rick Lamble ‘88, a professional landscaper.

The class completes multiple tasks: looking at Google Maps for satellite images, measuring during a field trip, writing detailed notes of the structures, learning the names of the plants and trees, talking about the legends that also go on the drawings, sketching the preliminary drawings, taking a second field trip to double check

everything, and producing the final drawings.

Helping out in the community and learning how zoo documentation works gave the students a sense of accomplishment for their work.

According to junior Macy Nguyen, the hardest part of the project was “making the geography and plants correct.”

Ave Maria Society Morning

The Ave Maria Society was created to provide long-term financial sustainability for Mater Dei High School. On April 24, more than fifty members and guests gathered for the annual Ave Maria Society Morning. The morning began with an all school living rosary and mass in the Kempf Auditorium. Guests were invited to a brief presentation and breakfast in the Nunning Media Center. During the presentation, President Dr. Tad Dickel presented the following successes of the Ave Maria Society: • Increased the number of members from 27 in 2010

to 95 individuals and couples in 2018

• Endowment distributions from $21,413.09 in 2010

to $140,464.50 in 2018

Keeping our school safe is one of the highest priorities at Mater Dei Association High School. In order to do this, a School Safety Committee was created to (MDFAA) assess risk factors and to implement changes that would help keep our faculty, established staff, and students secure. ince 2004, the Men’s Club has raised over $140,000, which has benefitted boys and girls athletics at Mater Dei High School. Some examples of their generous contributions include, but are not limited to, new shoulder pads and raincoats for the football team, a tent canopy for the track team, indoor batting cages, and money for state rings. Also, funds raised for the Full of Grace campaign were used to help upgrade the boys’ and girls’ locker rooms. “We are always willing to donate money for any need when a coach requests it,” President Jon Black said.

In the 1960s, a small group of Mater Dei fathers organized the booster club with the intent of supporting athletics. An initiative of Jack Oliver, some of the club’s original members included Jack Siemers, Jerry Weinzapfel, Jim Schroeder, Ollie Schapker, Bill Macke, Rick Weber, Tony Paul,

Al Knapp, and Charlie Alles.

Membership usually hovered around 15 men.

This organization sold half pot tickets at all home football and basketball games. Profits were used to provide meals for the student athletes at the fall, winter, and spring sports banquets where current athletes were recognized and honored. Donations were also made to aid in the purchase of sports equipment.

In 2004, Kent Reddington, Gene Whorl, and Glen Modesitt decided to establish the Mater Dei Men’s Club. The booster eventually disbanded, and the Men’s Club assumed responsibility for the football half pots. Dues for the original members of the booster club were waived, and they were given a lifetime membership. Originally, the motto of the new organization was “Supporting the Athletic Family.” However, two years ago that slogan was revised to “Supporting Mater Dei Athletics Since 2004.”

Requirements for membership are few. You must be 21 years or older and a male who is interested in supporting Mater Dei athletics. Dues are $35 per year. Meetings are held the third Thursday of each month from August to May, usually at one of the feeder schools. Dinner (often cooked by a club from the hosting school) and a business meeting are generally the format.

The year commences at the August meeting with a football stag which includes a $15 per person meal and a guest speaker. In the past, speakers have been local personalities such as sports officials and announcers, and one meeting even introduced members of the first MD football team. Coach Goebel also discusses the prospects for the year’s football team at the stag.

Besides the monthly meetings, the Men’s Club sponsors a free tailgate at Mater Dei’s first home football game. Everyone is welcome.

A newsletter is published monthly and is available to members and anyone who is interested in receiving a copy.

The newsletter includes information about the most recent meeting and upcoming fundraisers, a Wildcat of the Month recognition column, Mater Dei Trivia, and that month’s calendar of events. To receive a CONTINUED page 9

Nearly 400 guests attended the fifth annual Grandparent Mass on March 21. The morning began with mass celebrated by Fr. Phil Kreilein. After mass, grandparents and students were invited to a reception in the auxiliary gym where they had the opportunity to take a photo with their grandchildren and enjoy refreshments.

The improvements in the Alles Athletic Center were well received and much more conducive to a large crowd.

“The many guests in attendance is evidence of the tremendous support of our families, friends, and greater community. We are grateful that our community values the Catholic education we provide, and you can see this in the many improvements we have been able to make in recent years,� President Dr. Tad Dickel said.

The Men’s Club is an invaluable asset to Mater Dei athletics.

Their 160 members are active in a number of fundraisers. Besides raising money through membership dues and stag night, they continue to sell half pot tickets at home football and basketball games. They also sponsor a Fall Festival parking lot at 10th and Wabash and an Annual Golf Scramble at Helfrich Hills every April. Charity Mania Football tickets are available

for $20 each in August, and for three years, the Men’s Club parked cars at the Frog Follies.

“Our greatest success is making sure our athletes are equipped with what they need to compete on a level playing field,” Black said, “[but] our biggest challenge is to encourage fathers to be involved in the Men’s Club. Without this club, parents may be expected to pay more for their child to compete in athletics. We also need young people to step up and embrace this endeavor.”

After 30 years as a sales manager, Michael Norman ‘74 is teaching children about the outdoors and the conservation of natural resources. The Northern Illinois Anglers Association recognized Mike’s efforts by nominating him as an Outstanding Volunteer of Kankakee County. Mike chairs the Pheasants Forever “No Child Left Indoors” program and stays actively involved in a variety of organizations, including serving as a co-chair of Kids Fishing Day Bird Park and chairman of the Kankakee River Valley Fishing Derby Northern Illinois Anglers Association.

BY KRISTINE SCHROEDER Mater Dei High School is built upon the four cornerstones of spiritual growth, academic excellence, social development, and service to others. As students mature under the influence of these tenets, they receive a faith based education that recognizes the needs and differences of each individual.

Additionally, all students contribute service hours every year as a graduation requirement as they balance their social and physical development through extra-curricular activities.These four cornerstones become life-long commitments to honor God and community.

SPIRITUAL GROWTH TOM FOLZ ‘56 BUTCH FEULNER ‘66

After graduating from Mater Dei in 1956, Tom Folz enlisted in the United States Air Force for two years.

Upon his return, he began dating Delores Krack ‘56. They married in 1959 and raised four children:

Mater Dei Mark ‘78, Mary ‘79, Mike, and Rita ‘86. Twenty grandchildren have blessed their lives. Throughout his adult life, Folz was employed in a variety of jobs, mainly in sales and communications.

In 1992, Folz and his wife Delores made a Cursillo, an important step on their spiritual journeys. “I am a slow grower. I believe the Holy Spirit has been my inspiration in my life. Attending Mater Dei definitely impacted me spiritually, especially the contact with the sisters and priests, particularly Monsignor Lautner and Father Dewig,” Folz said. In his home parish, St. Joe in the County, Folz credits the late Father Francis Schroering with being another spiritual mentor. Moved by the Cursillo weekend, Folz has remained active in this endeavor working on many Cursillo teams and acting as a coordinator.

In 1994, Vince Bernardin encouraged Folz to attend the White House Retreat in St. Louis, a threeday, silent retreat. Folz explained that every year approximately 30 people from the area participate. “Some are regulars, some go every few years. I have returned every year for the last 24.” Folz was also involved for many years in Christian Family Movement (CFM), and in his own church he has been a lector, Eucharistic minister, RCIA instructor, and a member of many church committees.

In 1966, Butch Feulner graduated from Mater Dei. He matriculated to Indiana University in Bloomington and then pursued a law degree at the IU Law School in Indianapolis.

As a freshman, he met his wife Linda (MacGregor) shortly

after her eighth grade graduation at a CYO dance. They married in 1969 and have two children: Jenny Daza ‘97 and Adam ‘01. Four grandchildren enrich their lives also. Feulner spent his working career as a lawyer and an investor.

In the spring of 1990, at the urging of a longtime friend and fellow parishioner Pat Freeman ‘65, Feulner too experienced a Cursillo weekend. “It was life-changing. That weekend I received a heart message that Jesus Christ is my friend and my relationship with Him is of the utmost importance and will improve all my other relationships.”

To continue the spirituality of Cursillo, grouping with like-minded people is encouraged. While in his group, some of the men discussed the need to take part in another retreat. Feulner knew some men who planned to attend the White House Retreat in the fall. He contacted the coordinator, Guerin Bernardin, and was told that there was a waiting list.

Fortunately, he and a fellow Cursillo group member, Dan Schenk, were able to join them. “It was just what I needed. It fulfilled a need in me to examine areas of my life that had not been addressed,” Feulner said.

The White House

Retreat, which is run by the Jesuits, walks participants through the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola (founder of the Jesuit order). By participating in these exercises, “a person learns to put his worldly experiences into a spiritual framework,” Feulner explained. He, like Folz, was an active member of CFM for many years and has been attending the White House Retreat every year since his initial visit.

In 1995, Feulner and Folz began recruiting men and coordinating trips to the retreat every year. “For me, it is similar to Spring Training. Left to my own devices there are many things in society that can lead me away from my spirituality,” Feulner said.

“Catholic schools gave me the official messages and basic tenets of Catholicism, Cursillo taught me the heart of Catholicism, and the White House Retreat has aided me in practically applying my Catholic beliefs,” Feulner shared. Both men agree that a spiritual journey is a lifelong commitment that requires both adherence to the teachings of the Catholic faith and participation in offered sources of continual faith renewal.

all made me better.” Dr. Herrmann credits MD for its discipline, strong traditions, character expectations, and the academic challenges. In summary, Dr. Herrmann said, “Mater Dei successfully prepares individuals to face new challenges with integrity and perseverance.”

Early in high school, Herrmann knew that he wanted to be a doctor, and he had an early interest in pediatrics based on personal experiences. After his graduation in 1998, he attended Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana, where he ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE majored in biology. In addition to raising two sons, Carter (10) and Dylan (8), Herrmann said his wife “somehow managed to build a successful legal career despite all the twists and turns of our lives.”

Currently, Dr. Herrmann is a congenital cardiac surgeon at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis.

He specializes in conditions of the heart that people are born with.

According to Dr. Herrmann, “This field traditionally included only children, newborns to teenagers, but our ability to care for these patients has improved to the point that adults with congenital heart defects now outnumber our pediatric patients.”

Dr. Herrmann notes that his group is unique in that they serve all of Indiana and perform a full range of cardiac procedures including heart transplants. Additionally, he is involved the cardiothoracic surgery training program and in the clinical outcomes research program.

His advice to Mater Dei students: “No one should care more about your education than you.”

Having recently seen the tremendous capital improvements at the school, Dr. Hermann encourages current

students to take every advantage of the opportunities offered. He added, “Be proud of your Mater Dei heritage.”

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT JIM SCHROEDER ‘95

Since his graduation from Mater Dei High School in 1995, Jim Schroeder has led a full life. He earned his BS in psychology with a minor in counseling psychology/social work from Ball State University in 1999. In 2000, Schroeder married his high school sweetheart, Amy Lehman ‘96. He then pursued a masters and PhD in clinical psychology at St. Louis University, graduating in 2005. Their family began with twins, Zachary and Emma born in 2006. In the following 10 years, the copule was blessed with five more boys: Matthew, Noah, William, Louis, and Samuel.

Besides a busy home life, Dr. Schroeder has worked as a youth psychologist for the past thirteen years and is currently employed as Vice-President of Psychological Services at Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center. In addition to his formal occupation, Schroeder is committed to working in the community to aid parents in raising healthy children: socially, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. To attain this goal, he has been involved in a plethora of activities.

As a monthly columnist for the Evansville Courier & Press, Dr. Schroeder writes on a variety of topics that affect the health of both children and adults, and he is a regular contributor to Aleteia, a worldwide Catholic media web magazine. The

public can also hear him on the “Son Rise Morning Show” on Sacred Heart Radio every other Monday at 7:50 as well as his spot on Relevant Radio two times a month.

Topics on these shows range from discussions about national issues to discussion on his recently published articles. Dr. Schroeder has also written a series of parenting articles that can be accessed on his website, james-schroeder.com, and he is the author of three books: Into the Rising Sun, Wholiness: The Unified Pursuit of Health, Harmony, Happiness, and Heaven, and The Evansville Diocese Historical Tour: Footprints of Our Catholic Brethren.

As a child psychologist, Dr. Schroeder has studied research concerning the use of technology and its effects on children, particularly regarding age appropriateness and amount of use. He talks to parent groups throughout the region in an attempt to educate parents of the pitfalls of uncensored access and overuse of technology and discusses positive media usage. Schroeder is quick to note that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends NO screen time before the age of two.

Dr. Schroeder and his wife have presented local parenting classes as well as a developmental series based on children ages 0 - 3.

The presentations aid parents in understanding typical behaviors at these ages. Recently, the couple introduced a “Love Ed” series for parents of students in grades 4-8.

This series aims to assist parents in building a healthy framework to relate how Catholic teachings can merge with early sexuality. Additionally, Dr. Schroeder is a strong proponent for the development of positive sleep patterns in children and speaks to many groups concerning this issue.

“I want all people responsible for rearing children to understand what we as parents or surrogate parents can do to maximize the opportunity for children to live happy, holy, and healthy lives,” Dr. Schroeder said.

SERVICE JEAN (BRADLEY) ALVEY ‘81

It only requires a short conversation with Jean (Bradley) Alvey ‘81 to recognize her passion for the Ozanam Shelter. As she herself states, “I could talk about Ozanam indefinitely.” Her association with the organization has deep roots. Since 1992, her mother, Mary Jane (Gries) Bradley ’58, has been a cook for the Tuesday evening meal at the shelter.

When her husband Ernie retired in 2002, he joined Mary Jane in that endeavor.

In 1992, the founder of Ozanam, Deacon Bob Hayden, at the suggestion of her mother, asked Alvey to join the Ozanam board. She agreed and has been serving on the board ever since, with a brief departure in October 2015 when the then director left abruptly. The board asked Alvey

to accept the position of interim director. Doing so required her to resign from the board.

“At that time, there were many crisis issues to resolve: the organization needed stabilization, funding was at an all time low, and there was a need to find a qualified director,” Alvey explained. After 16 months, most issues were improving, and a well-experienced director, Danette Romines, was hired. Alvey then returned to her original position as a volunteer board member and also accepted a new volunteer position as Ozanam treasurer.

Alvey, the second of six children, grew up on Evansville’s Westside. She and her siblings (Allen ‘79, Sue ‘83, Debbie Head ‘84, Cindy Marx ‘89 and Michelle Blum ‘91) were all Mater Dei graduates, and at the end of Alvey’s junior year, she began dating her now husband, Dr. Terry Alvey ’80. Both attended USI, but in his senior year, Terry moved to Chicago where he pursued a degree in Podiatric Medicine. After Alvey completed her CPA degree, she and Terry married and moved to Chicago, returning to Evansville in 1987.

In the 1960s, Gossman established the Mater Dei feeder wrestling program, which is considered the lifeblood of the Mater Dei wrestling team. In 1973, Mater Dei claimed their first "triple crown": city, SIAC, and sectional championships. Gossman was inducted into the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association in 1976.

To honor the memory of Coach Gossman and his wife Patricia, an endowment has been established by a donor. This endowment will support the growth and development of students in academic and athletic pursuits. ALLES, GILBERT RETIRE After fifteen years of service at Mater Dei, Kim Alles retired as the Bookkeeper and Bookstore Manager in March 2018. Kim was an extremely dedicated employee whose attention to detail, diligence, and hard work have made our financial records accurate and ensured proper stewardship of funds. Kim was instrumental in starting the textbook rental program a few years ago, and that change has been well received by our parents.

Lou Ann Gilbert retired in June 2018 after serving as Enrollment Manager for seven years. As Mater Dei’s first Enrollment Manager, she effectively organized enrollment management processes, strengthened relationships with feeder schools, and navigated the Indiana voucher program. Mater Dei experienced a decline in enrollment over several years prior to her being hired. eighth annual Mater Dei Dance Marathon (MDDM) was held April 20 and raised $41,554.28 all for Riley Children’s Hospital.

The committee’s goal this year was $25,000.

Fundraising for the event started at the beginning of the school year, and the committee was still receiving money at 11 p.m. the night of the dance marathon.

With donations, a pizza fundraiser, a Milk and Sugar giveback, a Hacienda giveback, an auction, and members of the committee soliciting businesses, the committee more than surpassed their goal.

Money raised for Riley will be used for new technologies like x-ray machines that don’t produce a lot of radiation and improvements to the maternity ward for infants with known problems before birth.

“The most rewarding part for me is seeing the Riley families at the event and hearing how much Riley has impacted their lives and knowing we are part of the Riley team by raising funds to provide the care they need now and for the future,” Mrs. Toni Wallace said.

Mrs. Wallace has been in charge of the MDDM since the fall of 2010 when planning for the first event began. As a teacher and mentor, she strives to teach the committee

members how to serve others in a joyful, compassionate way.

“It’s not about accolades or being recognized. It’s about being passionate for a cause and putting that mindset into motion,” Mrs. Wallace said.

At the dance marathon, families and students enjoy inflatables, face painting, cornhole, can jam, and even learn a dance. Throughout the night, Riley kids and families share how Riley has impacted their lives.

Of the 65+ high schools across the state and thousands of students who participate, the MDDM is one of the top high school dance marathons in Indiana, raising almost $250,000 in eight short years.

Congratulations to Nicole Richmond for being recognized as a Riley Children’s Foundation Next Generation Philanthropist Award Winner. She represented one of eleven graduating seniors recognized in this inaugural class of Next Generation Philanthropists.

Kenneth McAtee #26 was captain of Mater Dei’s inaugural football team in 1949.

ric Singer is a proud member of the class of 2018, and after academic success and four years of football, two years of baseball and one year on the wrestling team, his “experience has been memory filled.” Iric is one of 137 graduates this year, but his pride in Mater Dei is unique because he is the first-ever fourth generation Wildcat.

According to a 1988 article in The Message, during this inaugural year, the students chose the Wildcat mascot and the school colors of red and gold.

In 1951, Kenneth and Betty said “I Do” and began the McAtee family legacy, eventually having four children, all of whom graduated from MD: Terry ‘70, Nancy ‘72, Kenny ’73, and Erin ’79. All of Kenneth and Betty’s children, spouses, and many of the grandchildren share fond memories of being a MD student and remain loyal fans and supporters even today. Iric says having so many Wildcat family members helps them “relate to things on a deeper level when it [comes] to academics and athletics. . .”
