"I love the theme "Saints in the Making" for this school year. To me becoming a Saint is all about finding out and following what God has planned for you with a joyful spirit. It seems fitting that this is the theme for my class's senior year because we are all already so focused on figuring out what we will be doing in the future with college and career choices. It's a nice way to remember that God already has our future figured out and all we need to worry about is doing our best to love each other in the present moment. For the past year, I have been discerning my vocation, and while I don't yet know what my vocation is I know that if I always do my best to stay close to God and say yes to his plan, someday I can become a Saint. I hope that this school year brings us all closer to God and that we can all become more familiar with his love for us."

Senior Isabelle Koch shared laughs with a veteran after the Veterans Day program.

Senior, Isabelle Koch “I am called to be a saint and so are you. By striving for this goal, we can become the people that God made us to be. Though we will experience trials as well as our own weaknesses, it’s important to remember that holiness does not equal perfection. It simply means trusting and surrendering to God’s will in the present moment. He truly knows what’s best for us. When we trust in God, we will find meaning and peace. His grace is sufficient to help us to become saints. I am extremely grateful to work in a school where our theme happens to be God’s universal call for each one of us; to be a saint in the making!” Theology Teacher, Jeremy Goebel ‘06, led the class in prayer before starting their day.

By Mallory Hertel ‘07 Mater Dei has been blessed with seeing the smiling faces of Sr. Ann Marie Butler and Sr. Sheila Carney nearly every day for years. These special Daughters of Charity have given more to MD than just their happy demeanor and wisdom. Both have taken on very important roles since joining our school staff. Sr. Sheila is originally from Utica, NY. Since her Formation as a Daughter of Charity in 1958, Sr. Sheila has gone on to dedicate her life to students. She has served in various roles in schools all across the country from Washington, D.C., Ohio, Alabama, Mississippi, Illinois, and Texas. She taught middle school for 28 years and served as a principal for 6. Throughout her time, she also was a volleyball and basketball coach. She then went on to serve as the Secretary at the Mater Dei Provincial House of Evansville. In 2015, Sr. Sheila came to Mater Dei High School and went straight to volunteering her services in the Business Office where she aids in payroll, details, and deposits and keeps her office mates in line. When asked what she likes the most about her time at Mater Dei, Sister says, “It keeps me connected with youth and the high school kids. Not that I have a lot to do with them directly, but it keeps me around them.” In her spare time, you can find Sister Sheila reading, doing jigsaw puzzles, and keeping up with sports. She is especially a fan of college basketball. She now has all of her fellow Daughters of Charity filling out brackets every year during March Madness.

Sister Ann Marie Butler began her volunteer ministry at Mater Dei in 2011 and has provided spiritual guidance to groups of 3-4 students at a time during part of their junior theology class. It takes approximately two weeks to see all the students in the class and then they continue on a rotation the rest of the year. She concentrates on 3 main areas with the junior class: 1) their relationship with God and various prayer experiences 2) recognition of the gifts God has given them and the use of those gifts to serve others and 3) a discernment process that will help them in making good decisions for the rest of their lives.

Catholic identity as well as the special needs of the school. She even developed a program in small group spiritual guidance which was published by the National Catholic Education Association. The title of the book is: “Many and Beautiful Things: Small Group Spiritual Guidance,” the title taken from a teacher’s prayer: “One day I would like to teach a few people many and beautiful things that will help them when they will one day teach a few people.” Sister Ann Marie says, “I love being at Mater Dei and feel that I am doubly blessed to have a great community of Sisters with whom I live and another special one with the faculty and students here.” Sister Ann Marie and Sister Sheila certainly give to the school in more ways than one and we are so incredibly grateful for their talents and presence day in and day out.

Sr. Ann Marie Butler and Sr. Sheila Carney

Originally from Natchez, Mississippi, Sister Ann Marie began her ministry in Catholic education 56 years ago. She has served as a teacher, principal, spiritual director, and a member of the Diocesan team in Mississippi to visit all Catholic schools and assist them in areas of

By Mallory Hertel ‘07 In December of 1962, Herman Scheller’s father tragically passed away in a car accident. As the oldest at 16, Herman had to grow up fast, drop out of Mater Dei, and take over the farm to support his family. He tried to find a balance between getting his education and tending to everything but it proved to be impossible. “We had dairy cows and hogs and that’s a 7-day a week job. I tried to do both. Sr. Clara suggested night school; I just thought ‘well that won’t help!’” Herman reflects on his days at Mater Dei fondly, and had things been different, looked forward to Soon after receiving his graduating with his class of 1964. The Annual Fund is our biggest and longest-running fundraiser of the year. It kicks off on July 1st every year and runs through June 30th of the following year. Funds raised are used to support various projects determined to have the most need over the course of the year and include but are not limited to building and grounds maintenance, tuition assistance for our students and their families, faculty and staff professional development, class retreats, and guest speakers. The projects can vary year to year but there are typically some recurring themes that need the constant support of our generous donors such as tuition assistance and maintenance for our facilities. All gifts regardless of size are very much appreciated. Mater Dei is blessed to have so many generous friends and alumni that truly keep us moving forward. Annual Fund Projects 2021-2022

While 2020-2021 has held much confusion and doubt in our nation and world, we found so much peace in sending our kids to Mater Dei, an anchor for the generations. The strength, perseverance and dedication of the teachers, staff, and families of Mater Dei this past year illuminated the very ideals upon which this institution was founded. We are certain that those who have gone before us, whose hard work, fierce loyalty, and faith in God saw Mater Dei to its fruition, would be so proud to see the continued commitment that has allowed our beloved alma mater to flourish, even in uncertain times. Mater Dei is a place of conviction, where new and familiar faces unite together, grow to be men and women, and embark upon the world with a foundation of faith and reason that will touch and shape countless lives for the better. We invite you to join us in giving back to Mater Dei, continuing to support the unique blend of faith and scholarship that instills in students God’s truth, goodness, and beauty. Our parents and grandparents sacrificed to make this possible. Let’s do the same for our children and grandchildren. Jim graduated from Ball State University and earned his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from St. Louis University. He is the Vice-President of the Department of Psychology & Wellness at Easterseals Rehabilitation Center. Amy graduated from the University of Evansville with a BS in education. A firefighter is a highly trained professional in navigating burning structures to save a life, the ones to keep properties from overwhelming an area with more destruction, and a first responder to anyone hurt and asking for help. They train continuously their entire career to help others and with the mindset that they’ll sacrifice themselves to ensure others always have a chance when asking for help. Being a firefighter is a fulfilling job and building a family with those you work around. Daryl’s co-workers at his station house are family since they share these values and know they can rely on each other just the same when doing their job. In 2016 Daryl was recognized by the city and awarded Firefighter of the Year for his achievements on duty and volunteer work off duty. He’s a member of the department’s Honor Guard—which is a unit that represents the department at funerals, memorials, ceremonies, and other public events. He’s also a member of the peer support team which assists other firefighters and families with support in various times of need or tragedy. Being a firefighter has given Daryl a life of gratitude for being a husband and father as well. He is fulfilled leading a servant lifestyle and states: “Love our neighbors as ourselves”.

“It’s the call that Jesus gave us all in Matthew 22:39 He continued “We see a lot of things on the Job on a regular basis that most won’t ever see. You can’t unsee it, but lean on each other, trust in God, and try to see each day as a gift.” Brandon Deig ’06 Indiana State Police (ISP) If you take a look back at the history of the Indiana State Police you may find that they had roots as the Motor Vehicle Police of the 1920’s, being the first agency with statewide traffic enforcement powers. Then to combat the increasingly violent crimes of fleeing felons and more vehicles traveling on the roadways in the 1930’s—came the creation of Indiana State Police. A Trooper’s focus is on keeping our roadways safe throughout the state, but also adding a statewide police force to assist with handling crime anywhere in the state. In 2011, MD graduate Brandon Deig joined the ISP after working for the Capitol Police section in Indianapolis for two years and joined the ranks of this well-known agency.

ICO’s are easily identifiable by their green uniforms and are our public servants off the beaten path who keep not only us safe but also the wildlife and natural resources in Indiana protected as well. Much of their job takes place out in the “country” of our Indiana counties where they’re usually the only law enforcement around. They have an important public safety job that also includes: a focus on hunting, fishing, trapping, off-road vehicle (ORV), and boating enforcement. ICOs are also tasked with teaching and promoting Hunter and Boater Education, ORV safety, being an active part of our local community, search and rescue operations, and making sure the state’s natural resources aren’t taken advantage of. Much of the time the only voice for these resources and all of the time the only thing standing in a wrongdoer’s way. Enjoying a conservation event while in boy scouts as a kid sparked Keith’s interest in joining the agency. Knowing this job is what he wanted to do, it was evident that Carl Voegel’s Biology and Tom Dick’s Earth Science were classes he enjoyed most at Mater Dei. After being on the Job a while, Keith also says “I didn’t realize it at the time, but Mary Pattison’s English and Composition classes set the foundation for my ability to write countless detailed incident and investigation reports that have kept me from going to court and in law enforcement that is a big advantage.”

Keith graduated from Purdue University in 2002 majoring in Wildlife Management, went on to work in Tennessee as a research technician on a bobtail quail project, returned to Indiana working as a civilian for the DNR in LaPorte and Newton counties. Along with working through college as a research technician, teaching assistant, engaging in student organizations, and even working in Vermont teaching hunter education— working these jobs in the wildlife field all contributed to him being prepared to one day be an Indiana Conservation Officer.

Keith Wildeman ‘98 and another DNR officer worked a large scale felony sale of wildlife.

From a subject that was illegally buying and selling wildlife (deer, raccoons, & turtles) to the Chinatown area of Chicago that turned into an undercover investigation that resulted in a number of felony charges for the sale of wildlife, to a subject poaching deer with a high-powered rifle at night while standing in the sunroof of his compact car and shooting across a busy road on the north side of Vanderburgh County. Sometimes I was in the right place at the right time and once caught a group of waterfowl hunters on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River over bagging on ducks and then dumping the carcasses in the river right in front of me.” No two days are the same in public safety and the same goes for being an ICO. Keith gets to spend a lot of his time checking anglers and hunters, being outside patrolling “God’s country” on a boat or ATV, teaching firearm safety classes to the youth, and interacting with the public. All this along with still responding to emergencies at any given moment. Stuff that’s all in a day’s work for an Indiana Conservation Officer.

Because of this, many people don’t fully know what it’s like to be a cop until you do it. When you watch the shows “Cops” or “Live PD” you usually get the more interesting or exciting parts of law enforcement all in a half-hour. These episodes ring true for a lot of city cops, but it’s not the only things that go on for an officer. Municipal police work comes with all the elements of city life. There are bars--so there are bar fights, there are large weekly events--so there are large event problems/safety concerns, there’s an endless sea of porch lights and reflective intersection signs at night--so there’s of course continuous calls of family disputes, intoxicated subjects, break-ins, break-ups, and even vehicle break-downs. A city cop may take three, hour-long complaints or vandalism reports in succession and when trying to text back a loved one—receive a call about a subject with a gun who just threatened to shoot someone. You may sign on to your computer for duty one day and immediately get sent to a car accident that’s backed up traffic on the Lloyd Expressway. After completing the various forms, absorbing the distaste for how long it took to complete everything, you pull off and try “finding the bad guys” before lunch/dinner but get interrupted with a call of a lady being beaten across town. Your “Job” instincts (five months of academy training with five more months of field training mixed with the inherent urge to help someone—which is what motivated most to put the uniform on) kick in and you rush to the address. This puts you on another collision course with destiny in a very real and memorable day with a stranger that quite “right now!” needs help. Sometimes a cop gets there and the abuser has fled because this idea we have known as the “cops” were coming—which is one thing that stops bad people from doing bad things.

Sometimes they’re still there pleading This message is something that I have their case and now you have a trained kept with me through college and protector of the streets turning into a on into my career. After retiring from Sterling Boiler & Mechanical, Dennis Niemeier ‘70 joined the Mater Dei staff in 2015 and became the Co-Facilities Manager with Steve Luigs after years of volunteering at the school. Often the first to arrive and last to leave the school grounds for the day, Dennis has been an incredible asset to the school. There seems to be no limit to his energy or abilities. Dennis’ dedication to Mater Dei was recognized in 2020 as a recipient of the first-ever MDFAA Distinguished Service Award Winner alongside Janice (Goebel) Schuble ‘64. Mater Dei has been so lucky to have him in our building day in and day out for the past six years. We wish him much joy and rest in his next chapter.

George Moll celebrated his retirement and 35th year as the head cross country coach this fall. Senior runner, Lauren Ahola, reflected on her time as a runner stating, “Coach Moll impacted my personal and athletic development during my four years of high school cross country through workouts at practices, meets, team dinners, and daily prayer. I am thankful that I was able to be a part of his support and devotion to our cross country family.”

Since graduating last spring (2021), I have spent a lot of time with friends and family. On July 10, 2021, I moved to the Coast Guard Academy and started a new life. I started military training and homework all in one. I was able to graduate from our training program and move on to the school year. I have been on Coast Guard ships, done drill competitions, and been taught to pay attention to the details over five weeks. Some of my hobbies include being outside, kayaking, spending time with friends and family, and doing any sports. Mater Dei prepared me very well in the math department. I feel like that is the class I have seen the most I have learned from Mater Dei. Overall the school’s work ethic really was put into me and grew me over time and prepared me. I also have a sister, Claire Ross, who’s a sophomore at Mater Dei.
