The Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) is proud to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO). This strategic partnership aims to enhance tourism cooperation between the Maldives and India, fostering closer collaboration and mutual growth in the travel industry.

• Promoting sustainable tourism practices that benefit both nations
Following the MOU signing, MATATO held a productive follow-up meeting with the High Commissioner of India to the Maldives, H.E. Munu Mahawar. This meeting was a continuation of discussions held on April 9, 2024, and focused on enhancing tourism ties between the two countries.
A major upcoming event is the roadshow designed to showcase Maldivian tourism to the Indian market. Scheduled to take place in Mumbai, New Delhi, and Bangalore cities with the best flight connectivity to the Maldives the roadshow aims to strengthen tourism ties. During the discussions, the importance of this roadshow was emphasized, with agreements on:
• Enhanced cooperation to further tourism collaborations
• Detailed planning to ensure maximum impact
• Promoting cultural exchanges to deepen mutual understanding and appreciation
• Securing support from stakeholders, including airlines, hotels, and travel agencies, to ensure the roadshow’s success

- PATA Travel Mart in Bangkok, Thailand, on August 27-29, 2024
- ITE HCMC in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on September 5-7, 2024

MATATO Addresses Press at 'Maldives Media Meet' in Arabian Travel Market
On May 6, 2024, our association President, Mr. Abdulla Ghiyas Riyaz, addressed the press at the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai at Maldives Media Meet organised by MMPRC. In his speech, he explored the past, present, and future of tourism in the Maldives, taking the audience on a journey through the evolution of the industry.
Mr. Riyaz highlighted key milestones in the Maldives' tourism history and shared exciting future prospects. He emphasized the importance of sustainable development, underscoring the need to balance growth with environmental stewardship.
His address resonated with attendees, reinforcing the Maldives' commitment to preserving its natural beauty while continuing to thrive as a premier global travel destination.
Maldives Experiences Lowest Tourist Arrivals in May in Three Years
In May 2024, the Maldives saw its lowest tourist arrivals in three years, with only 119,875 visitors. This is a decline of 0.9% compared to May 2023, which had 120,959 arrivals, and a significant drop from 2022, which saw 12,528 visitors. Additionally, May 2024 recorded the shortest average stay of the year at 7.3 days.
As of the end of May 2024, the leading source markets for the Maldives are China, Russia, the UK, Italy, and Germany. This represents a shift from the previous year when Russia led the market, followed by India, the UK, Italy, and Germany. Notably, China has risen to the top spot, while India has fallen to sixth place. However, the UK, Italy, and Germany have shown growth.
An informal survey conducted by the association revealed concerning occupancy levels at many resorts, guesthouses, and liveaboards for June and July. There is additional concern that the upcoming Euro Cup in June might further reduce European arrivals.
Earlier this year, in January, the association lobbied for increased investment in marketing campaigns through MMPRC, suggesting a threefold increase in spending with a more structured approach.
MATATO emphasized the need for enhanced destination marketing to meet current targets amidst intense competition from other countries. They advocate for targeted advertising campaigns, especially during the low season, such as a Summer Campaign. Maintaining focus on long-stay source markets is also crucial to sustain the average length of stay. To achieve these goals, the Maldives should adopt better marketing strategies and rely on data-driven metrics for decision-making.
