«Profundidad de campo» es un programa destinado a la producción, la muestra y el estudio de la práctica audiovisual contemporánea.

El objetivo de «Profundidad de campo» es ofrecer una visión —en profundidad—, del trabajo de artistas del medio audiovisual (aquellos que desarrollan su obra en formato video, los que dialogan con el cine y con otros medios o de aquellos que proponen instalaciones con imágenes en movimiento de un amplio rango). Mediante la presentación de las obras de estos creadores, tanto de trayectoria reconocida como emergente, este programa pretende contribuir a generar un espacio continuo para el diálogo, en el que las diferentes propuestas de los artistas, se complementen y contribuyan a un mejor entendimiento de este medio.

Tras un primer ciclo dedicado al tema de la violencia a través de la obra de Meiro Koizumi y María Ruido, el segundo ciclo de «Profundidad de campo» aborda el tema de la etnografía con la muestra y el acercamiento a la obra de Carlos Casas (mayo–junio) y Ana Vaz (julio–agosto). Dos artistas cuya producción plasma entornos naturales y las personas que los habitan, para explorar cuestiones históricas, políticas y culturales.

Carlos Casas (1974, Barcelona) estudió Artes, Cine y Diseño. En la actualidad vive y trabaja entre París y Barcelona. Sus propuestas han sido estrenadas en museos y espacios como la Tate Modern en Londres, el Centro Pompidou y la Fundación Cartier en París, HangarBicocca en Milán o el CCCB en Barcelona. Además, su trabajo ha obtenido el reconocimiento en festivales como el FIDMarseille, Festival de Cine de Venecia, Festival de Cine de Rotterdam o BAFICI. www.carloscasas.net

END TRILOGY [TRILOGÍA DEL FIN]: Hunters Since the Beginning of Time [Cazadores desde el principio de los tiempos], 2008

Carlos Casas (Barcelona, 1974) propone un viaje a los lugares más extremos y olvidados del planeta, aquellos que marcan con tierra firme sus puntos cardinales. Atraído por la riqueza del imaginario colectivo que evocan estos espacios situados «en el fin del mundo», moviéndose entre el cine documental, el arte visual y la etnografía —la «ciencia del pueblo»—, Casas ha recorrido durante las dos últimas décadas estos escenarios excepcionales, para registrarlos, para habitarlos, para aprehenderlos.

Y el viaje se adentra por su parte más plástica, más táctil y humana para posteriormente superponer estos registros con los sonidos captados directamente de la naturaleza y con algunos apuntes musicales que informan sobre las condiciones ambientales del escenario retratado. Es precisamente este modo tan singular de trabajar sonido e imagen lo que caracteriza el estilo de este artista y lo que define un lenguaje que desborda los límites de lo puramente cinematográfico.

End Trilogy [Trilogía final], que presentamos en el espacio central de la sala, revela con fuerza este interés por congelar paisajes remotos y capturar la experiencia de sus habitantes en lucha constante contra los elementos.

Los tres largometrajes que la componen, filmados entre 2002 y 2008, abordan escenarios diversos donde las formas de vida y prácticas de subsistencia tradicionales están desapareciendo. Deseo de la cámara por preservar la belleza de los rituales más simples y cotidianos, y la

memoria de los que los llevan a cabo casi por última vez.

Y en el proceso nacen imágenes alegóricas, cuyo poder reside en la tensión que se genera entre la sensación de un tiempo en suspensión y la especificad del sujeto retratado.

Solitude at the End of the World [Soledad al fin del mundo, 2002–2005] se localiza en la Patagonia, una de las regiones menos pobladas del mundo por sus extremas condiciones climáticas. Casas recupera los mitos que rodean estas tierras del sur extremo a través del relato de tres hombres que viven en completo aislamiento.

En Aral. Fishing in an Invisible Sea [Aral. Pescando en un mar invisible, 2004] Casas nos acerca a uno se los desastres ecológicos más flagrantes: la desecación del Mar de Aral por las autoridades soviéticas, que transformó en pocos años uno de los lagos más grandes de la Tierra en un desierto. Y lo hace a través de los testimonios de tres generaciones de pescadores: los más jóvenes muestran su incredulidad sobre la existencia previa del mar; los adultos se concentran en subsistir gracias a la escasa pesca disponible, mientras que los ancianos aseguran poder escuchar todavía el rumor de las olas.

Cierra esta trilogía el largometraje Hunters Since the Beginning of Time [Cazadores desde el principio de los tiempos, 2008] grabado en Chukotka, en la costa siberiana del mar de Bering, donde los cazadores de ballenas desarrollan una de las tradiciones más antiguas de caza marina.

Tres estados atraviesan la trilogía: la soledad de las tierras patagónicas, el miedo a la muerte en el mar de Aral y el deseo de supervivencia en Siberia. Los cuerpos y los gestos de los hombres en el paisaje que les conforma y en el que se funden tienen más fuerza que sus propios testimonios.

Con un punto de partida más experimental, Casas inicia sus Fieldworks [Trabajos de campo] en el año 2000: un proyecto de largo recorrido y carácter casi enciclopédico que reúne una serie de obras realizadas con materiales de archivo, imágenes y frecuencias de radio capturadas in situ en diferentes lugares. En estas «notas fílmicas» contrastan una vez más el empleo aleatorio y asincrónico de la música y su relación con las imágenes. En esta ocasión se muestran como documentación para entender su dilatado e intenso proceso de trabajo, tanto creativo como físico, y descubrir el acercamiento a los mismos lugares de su Trilogía final desde un ángulo más efectivo.

Por último, presentamos una selección de sus Recent Fieldworks [Últimos trabajos de campo]: Torino [Turín], 2012, y Vucca y Faro, 2017, rodados en Italia, y Azan Series [Serie Azan, 2012–2019], todavía en curso. Para el primero,

Casas filma los símbolos esotéricos y los rincones más enigmáticos de la ciudad de Turín; el segundo toma su nombre de una cueva al sur del país, Vucca De Lu Puzzu, donde los depósitos aluviales y las aguas marinas quedan conectadas por un lago interior, y en cuyo fondo se han encontrado pruebas que sugieren que allí podría haber estado el origen de nuestra civilización, de una existencia primigenia ligada a la cueva como refugio; y la tercera donde la tecnología del faro de Santa Maria di Leuca sirve de reconocimiento a la comunicación, a las señales de luz y a la emisión de frecuencias de radio que se cuelan en este caso como banda sonora. Finalmente, Serie Azan reúne un grupo de trabajos de campo destinados a registrar la llamada a la oración islámica en diversas partes del mundo.

Podríamos leer todas y cada una de las obras aquí expuestas como un homenaje a la persistencia de modos de vida que a priori no se corresponden con la idea de civilización contemporánea y como una oda a la resistencia tanto de la propia naturaleza como de sus habitantes. El arte de Casas nos acerca a este otro mundo y a su posibilidad, estableciendo una conexión inquietante entre un pasado arcaico y un futuro incierto.

"Depth of Field" is a programme that focuses on the production, screening and study of contemporary audiovisual practice.

The aim of "Depth of Field" is to offer an in-depth consideration of the work of audiovisual artists (those who produce their work in video format, those who engage in a dialogue with film and other media, and those whose work takes the form of installations with moving images of a very varied nature). Through the presentation of works by established and up-and-coming creators, this programme is intended to help to generate an ongoing space for dialogue in which the artists’ pieces complement each other and contribute to a better understanding of this medium.

After an initial season focusing on the subject of violence, explored through the work of Meiro Koizumi and María Ruido, the second season of "Depth of Field" looks at the issue of ethnography by screening and examining the work of Carlos Casas (May–June) and Ana Vaz (July–August). Two artists whose oeuvres present natural environments and the people who dwell in them as a means to consider historical, political and cultural issues.

Carlos Casas (1974, Barcelona) studied art, film and design. He currently lives and works in both Paris and Barcelona. His pieces have been shown in museums and spaces such as Tate Modern in London, the Pompidou Centre and the Cartier Foundation in Paris, HangarBicocca in Milan and the CCCB in Barcelona. In addition, he has received recognition for his work at festivals such as the FIDMarseille, the Venice Film Festival, the International Film Festival Rotterdam and the BAFICI. www.carloscasas.net

Carlos Casas (Barcelona, 1974) takes us on a journey to the most far-flung and forgotten places on the planet, places that mark their cardinal points with terra firma. Attracted by the wealth of the collective imaginary evoked by these spaces ″at the end of the world″, Casas has visited remarkable spots during the last two decades in order to record them, live in them and understand them, capturing them in works that straddle documentary filmmaking, the visual arts and ethnography, the ″science of people″.

This journey wends its way through these places’ more plastic, tactile and human aspects. Subsequently, these recordings are superimposed with sounds captured directly from nature and musical underscoring that tell of the environmental conditions in the setting portrayed. It is precisely this singular way of working with sound and images that characterises the style of this artist and which defines a language that goes beyond the limits of the purely cinematographic.

End Trilogy, which we present in the central space in the room, is a powerful demonstration of Casas’s interest in freezing remote landscapes and capturing the experience of their inhabitants engaged in constant combat against the elements, as well as his desire to preserve with his camera the beauty of simple, everyday rituals and the memory of

those performing them for what is very nearly the last time.

The three feature-length films that make up the trilogy, filmed between 2002 and 2008, look at diverse settings in which traditional ways of life and subsistence practices are disappearing. In the process, allegorical images are engendered, images whose force lies in the tension generated between the sensation of a suspended time and the specificity of the subject depicted.

Solitude at the End of the World (2002–2005) is set in Patagonia, one of the most unpopulated regions of the world due to its extreme climate. Casas resurrects the myths surrounding these lands in the far south through the account of three men living in complete isolation.

In Aral. Fishing in an Invisible Sea (2004), Casas gives us insights into one of the most glaring environmental disasters: the drying-up of the Aral Sea by the Soviet authorities, which turned one of the largest lakes on Earth into a desert in just a few years. This Casas does through the testimony of three generations of fishermen: the youngest are incredulous regarding the previous existence of the sea; the adults concentrate on surviving thanks to the limited amount of fish available; while the elders claim they can still hear the sound of the waves.

RECENT FIELDWORKS [ÚLTIMOS TRABAJOS DE CAMPO]: Azan Series, 2012-2019

The last of the films in this trilogy is Hunters Since the Beginning of Time (2008), shot in Chukotka on the Siberian shore of the Bering Sea, where whalers continue to pursue one of the oldest traditions in marine hunting.

Three states of the human condition run through the trilogy: the solitude of the lands of Patagonia; fear of death on the Aral Sea; and the desire for survival in Siberia. The bodies and gestures of the men in the landscape that has shaped them and into which they blend are more forceful than even their testimony.

Casas took a more experimental starting point when he began his Fieldworks in 2000, an ongoing, almost encyclopaedic project that includes a series of works made using archive material, images and radio signals captured in situ in various places. In these ‘filmic notes’, we find once again a contrast between the random and asynchronous use of music and its connection with the images. In this instance, these works are presented as documentation that provides an understanding of his lengthy and intense creative and physical working process, and which reveals from a more effective angle his approach to the same places that appear in his End Trilogy.

Lastly, we present a selection of his Recent Fieldworks: Torino (2012) and Vucca and Faro (2017), all shot in Italy, and Azan Series (2012–2019), which he is still working on. For the first, Casas filmed the esoteric symbols and most enigmatic corners of the city of Turin; the second takes its title from a cave in southern Italy, Vucca De Lu Puzzu, where alluvial deposits and the waters of the sea are joined by an inland lake, and at the bottom of which evidence has been found suggesting that our civilisation might have begun here, proof of an early existence linked to the cave as a refuge; and in the third, the technology of the Santa Maria di Leuca lighthouse serves as recognition of communication, of the beams of light and of the emission of radio signals that filter in like a soundtrack in this case. And lastly, Azan Series encompasses a group of fieldworks in which the Muslim call to prayer is recorded in various places around the world.

Each and every one of these works can be read as a tribute to the survival of ways of life that, at first sight, bear no relation to the contemporary idea of civilisation. Similarly, they can be seen as an ode to the resistance of nature itself and of the people that dwell in it. Casas’s art draws us into this other world and its possibilities, forging a disturbing connection between an ancient past and an uncertain future.
