SA Election

Congratulations to the new incoming Premier Peter Malinauskas and his Labor Party for totally white washing the Liberals, who appear to once again fall through poor performance and poor strategic planning during the lead up to the Election.

The standards need to be raised and the professionalism of our industry will not falter in any way. I will be reporting more on this subject as we progress to the next phase.

I must say, it is always good for a change and after a challenging period with the entire COVID 19 Pandemic taking control of the world, it appears as those all those leaders have been totally “wrecked” by the whole experience. You can’t blame anyone for running a race with no fuel in the tank and coming well behind in all areas.

To the Liberal Party, once again it’s time to regroup, try to build a team from scratch and work on some strategies that support the needs of the people, something that Labor have absolutely nailed with true leadership and support from very capable and talented recruits. I wish them well in their pursuit to project this state into a better economic and financial position.

Federal Election

I could almost write a similar story to the above with just name changes, Anthony Albanese has built a good team and marketed a plan to sell to the Australian people who I believe just want change. One of his quotes during his acceptance speech did make me laugh “I want to unite the people and bring unions and businesses together”. Well, I hope you succeed in that goal but history has proven that is impossible.

Let’s focus on the facts that we see in our industry: - Unions and builders fight like cat and dogs - There have been numerous attempts to get national harmonization processes across the line – not one has succeeded!

Australia effectively has 7 countries in one. Nobody wants to give up their rights and nobody from central / western Australia want to hand over their freedom to the eastern states. It is all too hard and whether the whole country is Labor or Liberal, it still doesn’t matter.

MPA will continue to work with any Government in charge and will support in all areas, but will be pushing for items related to our industry that need fixing. In SA there are a lot of things that need fixing and this process has begun.

The MPA will not let our industry slide nor will it allow the community to be ripped off, put up with substandard building of homes, dodgy plumbing practices or unlicensed tradespeople doing the work of licensed plumbers.

Specialist Contractors Lunch

There was a Business Lunch held on Friday 20th May that involved all the Specialist Contractor stakeholders and key industry people that are involved in medium to large building contracts.

The key sponsors included Portable Long Service Leave and Toyota Australia. Master Plumbers was a sponsor of the event as well. The keynote speaker was Brownyn Weir who was a major contributor to the Shergold Weir Report (Building Confidence Report), that all Plumbing Practioners should read.

There was also a Q & A session with industry leaders. There was a video taken of the speeches and debate and this can be viewed on the Specialist Contractors website.

LOOKING AFTER YOUR MENTAL HEALTH FOR SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS

• Set an alarm to remind yourself to take breaks throughout the day. Taking a meal break or getting outside for a short walk can help to organise your thoughts and manage stress. Have an afternoon off or take a long weekend after a busy period. Sometimes it can be easier to balance periods of longer hours with some shorter hours.

• Challenge yourself to think about what you can out-source, delegate or say ‘no’ to. Some tasks may not need your expertise and could easily be done by others, while other tasks may not be a priority or of significant benefit and saying ‘no’ could be the best approach.

As a small business owner there is much to enjoy about being your own boss, such as the freedom to make the decisions and the autonomy to run the business your way.

• Plan out your day before you start. If you’re already resigned to working a long day, you may find you are less productive during the day. Prioritise your urgent tasks and set a time that you plan to finish by.

Stay connected and access support

Following your passion can help you to feel good and be productive, and can also contribute positively to your mental health. Anyone who has run a small business knows that there are also a range of stressors or challenges too.

Running a small business takes time and energy and sometimes this can be isolating. This may be in a literal sense if you are a sole trader working by yourself. If you are an employing small business owner, being able to share some of the challenges of business with your staff isn’t always possible and this too can feel isolating.

Putting in long hours, feeling isolated, worrying about cash-flow and all that decision making can come with a sense of great responsibility. On top of that, there can be external factors outside your control that influence your business or the demands on your time too.

It is important to keep connected and find someone who you can talk with about your business successes and worries. Having access to social supports is one of the key things you can do to keep well and is linked to better mental health. Here are five tips to keep connected and increase your support:

• Set a time for when you will switch off your business email and mobile phone each day. Technology can blur the boundaries between work and home and make you feel as though you need to be ‘always on’.

It also includes other actions that can help us manage stress and obtain better mental health.

Adelaide careers and employment expo

On Friday 6th and Saturday 7th May 2022, Master Plumbers SA attended SA’s largest Careers and Employment Expo at the Adelaide Showgrounds.

The expo hosted over 120 organisations and employers with career opportunities for all ages.

Due to the current high demand for Apprentices in the plumbing industry, Master Plumbers SA recognised the importance of participating in this event and increasing the number of Apprenticeship applications.

Attendees at the expo included school students, parents, teachers, graduates, job seekers and workers seeking new career paths.

The Master Plumbers SA stand was part of the CITB Construction Careers Hub, which included employers, associations, training providers and industry stakeholders with a focus on the building and construction industry.

Field Officers Sam Baulderstone and Brittany Dekuyper, as well as CEO Andrew Clarke and Operations Manager, Gavin Watson did a fantastic job in providing attendees with advice and guidance on starting a career in the plumbing industry.

We also included an interactive activity at our display stand, which saw participants use a CCTV camera through pipe to find the message at the bottom, which read “Master Plumbers Apprentices = Success”.

We found this was a great way to interact with attendees, in addition to providing an interesting activity for them to participate in.

The expo was a fantastic event, and we hope that we were able to assist attendees in choosing the right career path for them, as well as increasing interest in careers in the plumbing industry.

We wish to thank the Adelaide Careers and Employment Expo and the CITB for the opportunity to be involved in this event.

plumbing work: who’s the boss?

If you get the job done on time, to budget and with a quality outcome, everyone is a winner. A happy client is good for business, but you need to be sure you are making the right person happy.

Who is your client?

If you are working for the owner of the premises, then that is easy.

Your client is the owner.

However more often you will be working for a builder or perhaps a main contractor. In those situations, you need to be careful who you take instructions from. Taking instructions from someone who is not your client can be problematic.

Before we get to that, a brief reminder that you should have a written contract for any work you do. The contract will tell you who your client is and it will also describe the scope of work.

If the scope of work is changed, the price and the time for completion of your work will likely change. Those changes should also be recorded in writing before you go ahead. This makes everything clear to all involved.

There is a very good chance of trouble if you take instructions from the wrong person. If you do that the right person (your client) may be unhappy.

For example, imagine you are working on a domestic kitchen installation. Your client is the builder who has subcontracted you to do the plumbing work. The price and scope are agreed and you have a written contract. So far, so good.

The owner of the home is generally around the place while you are doing your work. A very friendly person who offers cups of tea and biscuits and offers to help you whenever it looks like you need a hand.

The owner asks you to do some work in the laundry – “a quick job while you are here”.

You want everyone to be happy so why not?

It turns out that the tap in the laundry that was a “quick job” needs to be replaced with other incidental work and a quick job turns into an hour and a half of your time plus materials.

After you have finished the job, you invoice the builder for the variation, right? The builder didn’t ask you to do the work and tells you they won’t pay. It was that nice owner.

So, you send the owner the bill. The nice owner turns nasty – “I don’t have a contract with you, send this to the builder – he’s your boss”.

You have now got yourself caught in a classic no win situation.

Unhappy builder and unhappy owner. You will probably sort it out but it could leave a nasty taste.

What should you have done? Let’s change the story for the best outcome.

The owner asks you to do some work in the laundry. You have a look at it and say “Sure, but I will be working for you on this, OK? Let me call the builder just to make sure he/she is OK with this.”

You call the builder and explain. The builder is happy for you to work for the owner direct as long as you are sending the owner the bill.

You report to the owner, “Builder says, no problem as long as you understand that you are paying for this laundry work.”

The owner agrees and everyone is happy. At that time, you should give the owner an estimate of the cost to do the work. The owner doesn’t necessarily know your charge rate so better to find out before you do the work if the owner thinks it might be more than they want to spend.

If you are not going to have a written contract for this work, at least make a note in your diary (or on your phone) of the scope, the estimate and the approximate time of your conversation so that later, if there is a dispute, you will have good evidence to support your position.

Also, if you are into the work and the scope changes (need to replace the tap), tell the owner and revise your estimate.

If you follow this advice, you will greatly reduce the chances of unhappiness and a disputed invoice and you will increase your chances of further work from both the builder and the owner.

consequences of non-compliance in the trade industry

In a competitive market, your reputation in the building industry is crucial. It has the power to determine your current and future success. Being caught out for not complying with the law can have an irreversible effect on a tradesperson’s finances and standing in the community.

Consumer and Business Services (CBS) takes action where noncompliance is detected, such as builders and tradies not being licensed, working outside the scope of their licence, or performing substandard work.

The action taken and resulting consequences can vary based on the facts of each matter and the extent of damage caused. CBS has taken court action in relation to several unlicensed tradies in recent months.

A Burnside man who operated without a licence and provided shoddy work was fined $105,000. His victims were left with either inadequate or irreparable work, or they had paid for services that the tradie did not supply.

In one case, a consumer paid more than $32,000 to the tradie to build a pool, only to find that the fencing wasn’t straight, the filter pump wasn’t secured to the ground and the pool itself had a crack in the bottom.

The damage was so bad the consumer was told it would be cheaper to install a new pool than to repair the crack. In addition to the court ordered penalties, CBS issued a media release bringing this man to the broader public’s attention.

A tradie from Royal Park received a five-month suspended prison term, was fined $3,350 and ordered to repay consumers $8,000.

He was unlicensed, performed defective and dangerous building work, provided unsafe car trailers to unsuspecting consumers and stole $10,000 from a charity.

In another matter, a tradie from Torrensville provided a written assurance to CBS that he will not contract for building work without a licence. This assurance is publicly available on the assurances register on the CBS website, along with the names of other traders who have provided written assurances that they will not engage in certain unlawful conduct.

By publicising the names and details of builders and tradespeople who have gone before the court, provided a written assurance to CBS, or whose conduct is so poor that a public warning is necessary to protect consumers, this means that consumers are alerted to which tradies they should not engage. It also sends a clear message to the industry that unlicensed activity and other unlawful conduct is not acceptable.

CBS urges all workers in the building industry to be vigilant and professional with how they conduct themselves in their trade. It is clear that consumers will not tolerate tradies who perform substandard work, and that non-compliance can impact a tradie’s reputation and result in court ordered fines and compensation payments to affected clients.

CBS will continue to investigate and take action against South Australian traders who fail to comply with licensing and consumer protection requirements. CBS welcomes reports from consumers and industry of unlicensed activity. You can report online at www. cbs.sa.gov.au or by telephone on 131 882.

At SA Water we often encounter incorrectly connected internal pipework on properties, which can cause significant delays for you, the customer and SA Water. Common examples of incorrectly connected internal pipework include: • Internal pipework directly connected to the inlet tail without a water meter or outlet riser arm.

• Internal pipework connected to the outlet of the water meter without an outlet riser arm.

• Internal pipework and end of outlet arm exposed above ground.

These common problems can result in delays to or the obstruction of repair or replacement to parts of the meter assembly. Where the internal pipework is not connected correctly or an incorrect modification obstructs repair or replacement of the meter assembly SA Water may instruct the homeowner to engage a plumber, or request the plumber who performed the incorrect installation, to make the required rectifications to the internal pipework.

To save you and the customer time and money when performing this task, the following outlines the correct process of connecting to SA Water. An SA Water 20mm residential drinking water and non-drinking water connection consists of:

• an Inlet riser • 1/4 turn or T handle stopcock • inlet and outlet tails • water meter • outlet riser arm.

The meter assembly up to and including the threaded end of the outlet remains the property of SA Water, which is responsible for its installation, maintenance and repair. To correctly connect to an SA Water connection, internal pipe work for the property must be connected to the threaded end of the outlet riser arm.

As a plumber you may identify an incorrect connection to the meter and wish to fix it as you work to save the customer time and expense in the future. If any components of the water meter assembly, including the water meter or outlet riser arm, are missing, please contact SA Water on 1300 SA WATER (1300 729 283) to request a replacement.
