CEO EDITORIAL
2021 President’s Lunch
He worked tirelessly in his role and was a teacher and mentor to those in the industry.
The 2021 President’s lunch switch got turned back on this year after an unpredictable 2020 saw the cancellation of last year’s lunch - and it went off with a bang.
More has been mentioned in this edition, but I know the gas industry won’t be the same without him.
Over 400 guests were eager to catch up and network with industry friends and colleagues and the entertainment factor again proved equally successful. More on the event is detailed later in the magazine, however I would like to focus on the support that we received from our dedicated sponsors. I would like to personally thank the following organisations for sponsorship in no particular order: CIVILMART, Australian Gas Networks, Caroma, MEGT, Rheem, CITB, Lynch Meyer Lawyers, Toyota, CBUS, St. Patricks Technical College, Tradelink, Portable Long Service Leave, Acura, PEER, Milwaukee, and SimPRO. I would like to also thank our speakers for the day: David Hurst - President of the Master Plumbers Association of SA, the Honourable David Pisoni – Minister for Innovation and Skills, Craig de Laine – the recently appointed CEO of Australian Gas Infrastructure Group, Troy Gray our MC and our entertainers Steven Bradbury and Bruno Lucia.
MPA AGM The MPA AGM was held on Tuesday 19th October and it is with great pleasure that the Executive Board for 2021 / 2022 consists of the following: David Hurst – President Matt Sando – Deputy President Damon Hammond – Treasurer Steve Adams – Councillor Mike McEntee – Councillor Rob Dineen – Councillor Steve Slack – Councillor Daria McLachlan – Independent Chair (TBC) Should any member have any issues or concerns in the industry and feel they need the support of a Board member – please visit mpasa.com.au/executive-committee for full contact details.
Congratulations to all of our Apprentice Award winners and to our Membership Milestone recipients. A big congratulations to AJ Paternoster for reaching the 100 Year membership milestone - an incredible achievement. Our industry relies heavily on great support, up and coming stars and the longevity of industry members. Thank you.
Andrew Clarke Executive Officer
Vale Tom Sika I would also like to pass on my sincere condolences to the Sika family for the loss of Tom who was an extremely passionate and dedicated member of the plumbing / gas family. Tom headed up the Gas Regulatory role in South Australia for the Office of Technical Regulator and was an incredible man. I knew Tom very well, he was hard working, committed man that would strive for safety and compliance in the gas industry.

MENTAL HEALTH
TIPS FOR STAYING HEALTHY THIS CHRISTMAS
Although Christmas is supposed to be a time of joy spent with friends and family, for some Christmas may be met with some apprehension and challenges, particularly for those living with mental health challenges. Amid all the flurry of Christmas, taking time out to remember a few simple ways to protect your wellbeing could make all the difference. Here are some helfpul tips from HelpingMinds to help make this festive season a little more manageable.
Only participate in activities that are significant to you
Decide which Christmas activities and traditions are most significant to you. Only participate in those activities that have significance for you and decline the activities which cause stress or are insignificant for you.
Stay connected
Keep in touch with friends and family. Even if it’s just a short phone call, having people to talk and laugh with is a great protective factor for our mental health.
Delegate Christmas tasks and ask for help
If you are not coping, communicate openly and remember it’s ok to say “no”. Don’t carry the entire burden.
Make a Christmas budget and stick to it
Christmas time tends to be a time when people spend more money than they can afford. Avoid adding financial stress to your burden this Christmas time by making a budget and sticking to it.
Recognise your signs of stress and use techniques that help you relax
Relaxation techniques are useful when you begin to get irritated or upset. Take a few deep breaths, go for a walk or try some mindfulness. Whatever works for you.
Stay active
It is important you stay healthy over the holidays and exercising can be huge mood booster and a great way get you out of your own head for a while. Sometimes finding time or motivation can be difficult, so start small and set realistic goals.
Try not to over-indulge
Christmas is full of temptations but try to enjoy everything in moderation. Overindulgence is often a result of people trying to improve their mood but you may be left with feelings of guilt and shame afterwards.
Drink in moderation
Drinking responsibly is about drinking in moderation. Alcohol can have a negative impact on our mental health, so make informed choices and know your limits when it comes to drinking.
Try not to put too much pressure on yourself
Are you putting too much pressure on yourself this Christmas? You are not alone! Don’t take things so seriously. Be gentle with yourself and just do the best you can.
Find Gratitude. Even if it’s something small
It’s easy to focus on the negative things in life but we all have something to be thankful for. Write down or think about something you’re grateful for, even if it’s someone letting you in to busy traffic.
Get enough sleep
In such a busy and stressful time, it’s important to recharge your batteries. Make sure you’re getting at least 8 hours sleep a night to avoid feeling exhausted.
Have healthy meals planned when you aren’t celebrating
Balance all of those tasty Christmas treats with healthy meal options during your down time. Eat lots of fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains and quality sources of protein and dairy. A healthy body can help create a healthy mind.
Find time to relax
The pressures of a busy holiday season can make some people feel worn-out, try not to feel guilty for putting yourself first! It could be as simple as reading a book for a while or watching your favourite movie.
Everything doesn’t have to be perfect
Life doesn’t have to be perfect to be wonderful and being happy doesn’t mean that everything is perfect. Be kind to yourself this Christmas and know that imperfections are OK.
You are not alone
Don’t think you are alone. Lots of people find Christmas difficult. Stay strong and seek connection with others if you are struggling, there are still support organisations open at this time of year if you need them.
It’s okay to say “no” to some things
Be assertive if you need to be and know it is OK to say no. Put your wellbeing first and don’t over commit yourself. It’s okay to decline someone’s offer or invitation without feeling guilty or shameful. It is OK to put yourself first.
Let someone know if you’re struggling
If you are struggling to cope, there is always someone to talk to.

2021 PRESIDENT’S LUNCH On Friday, 15th October 2021 at Adelaide Oval, our industry came together to celebrate the achievements of the previous two years.
After facing a multitude of adversities, it was fantastic for our industry to be able to come together in a large-scale setting for a relaxed and positive afternoon. With over 400 guests in attendance, it was evident that our industry was excited to catch up and network with fellow representatives again following the disappointing cancellation of our 2020 event. Our Master of Ceremonies was TV Presenter and former AFL Player Troy Gray, who as always did a fantastic job in keeping our guests entertained whilst presenting the proceedings of the day. To kick off the event, Master Plumbers SA President, David Hurst welcomed guests and recognised the challenges faced by the industry over the last 18 months. He provided an informative update on current issues and looking to the future. Minister for Innovation and Skills, the Honorable David Pisoni, was in attendance as a guest speaker and provided guests with an update on Apprenticeships and skilled workforce in the construction industry. To commence the Awards for the day, we saw six of our Apprentices receive recognition for their hard work and dedication. We presented four High Achievement Awards – one award for each year level, as well as an Outstanding Apprentice Award and a Work Health and Safety Award. It was a pleasure to have Craig de Laine (now the CEO of Australian Gas Infrastructure Group) as a guest speaker, who provided an informative presentation to on the future of renewable gas. Previously known as the MPA Gold Medal, it was announced at our event that we had made the decision to honour industry icon, Jack Holder (pictured with Andrew Clarke) by renaming the medal to the Jack Holder Gold Medal. We believe that renaming this Award in honour Jack’s honour further cements the high standard for our industry’s future leaders to aspire to. This prestigious award was presented to Connor Gregg, along with the CITB Award for Training Excellence.
8
Following main course, Steven Bradbury - Olympic Gold Medallist entertained the crowd, starting his presentation in stand-up comedy style and moving into his inspirational story of becoming an Olympic athlete. Steven had the crowd in stitches as they watched hand-picked guests struggle to be the last man standing during a speed skating training method. In closing, Steven successfully auctioned off two framed memorabilia items for charity, which saw proceeds raised for the Mary Potter Hospice. In addition, Toyota kindly donated two auction items for the same charity, including a football signed by the current Adelaide Crows team, as well as a signed Redbacks shirt. In total, $1900 was raised for this outstanding charity. Throughout the day, we also had raffles and prizes donated by our Sponsors, which included a Bosch Cordless Grinder, 4 x tickets to the footy, a bottle of Canadian Club, picnic cooler bag, a $100 Gauchos Voucher. Four Members were recognised for reaching their 25-year Membership Milestone with Master Plumbers SA. Although not all Members of this Milestone were able to attend to accept their Awards, all Members will receive a Certificate and gift which will be provided to them at a later date. A very special Member Milestone was reached this year, with AJ Paternoster & Son Pty Ltd reaching their 100 Year Member Milestone Award. This is a fantastic achievement, which Rob Paternoster and his family were extremely proud to receive. To close the event, comedian Bruno Lucia had the crowd entertained with his funny one-liners and even got out his electric guitar for some hilarious impressions as formalities for the event came to a close. We would like to thank all of our Award winners, guests, speakers and the following sponsors who made this event possible:

HON DAVID PISONI MP
South Australia’s Skills Led Recovery in Full Swing
The last 18 months have been challenging for many businesses, families, and communities across the country, and especially for our colleagues and friends in the eastern states.
Since 2018, our $200 million Skilling South Australia initiative has been delivering the skills that industry needs and getting more South Australians on a pathway to a career.
Despite the challenges presented by COVID-19, the Marshall Government’s record infrastructure investment of $17.9 billion and sensible stimulus has protected South Australian jobs and businesses throughout the pandemic.
Recent data has shown that over 48,000 new apprentice and trainee commencements have been achieved since 2018, with more than 3,000 local SA businesses employing an apprentice or trainee for the first time.
We continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with South Australian businesses as we deliver targeted economic support – through the Business Support Package – as part of our strong COVID economic recovery plan.
I encourage local employers and training providers to take advantage of the many subsidies available.
Our recovery plan is supporting business, protecting jobs, and shielding South Australians from the health threat posed by the pandemic, and we are determined to ensure everyone has access to the vaccine to keep our state safe and economy strong. Across South Australia, we have continued to see record high levels of business confidence, and we know that our qualified tradespeople have been flat out keeping up with the amount of work on offer. This is especially true for plumbers. The demand for skilled workers in trade areas is strong, with employers and job seekers increasingly seeing the value of apprenticeships.
Through the Australian Government’s Boosting Apprentice Commencements wage subsidy, businesses or Group Training Organisations which engage an Australian apprentice until 31 March 2022 may be eligible for a subsidy of 50 per cent of wages paid to a new or recommencing apprentice or trainee for a 12-month period from the date of commencement, to a maximum of $7,000 per quarter. After the first 12 months, employers can transition to the time-limited Completing Apprenticeship Commencements (CAC) wage subsidy for the second and third years of an apprenticeship, delivering a 10 per cent subsidy in the second year, up to a maximum of $1,500 per quarter, and a five per cent subsidy in the third year, to a maximum $750 per quarter. For more information on what’s on offer in the skills and training system visit www.skills.sa.gov.au
In fact, over the last year here in South Australia apprenticeship commencements in construction trades increased by 55 per cent. There were more than 80 internet job ads for plumbers in South Australia in August 2021 – the highest number for plumbers in our state in the past 15 years, as reported by the Australian Government.
Hon David Pisoni MP That high level of demand resulted in 2,100 more plumbers being employed in South Australia in August this year when compared with May, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics Labour Force Survey.
Minister for Innovation and Skills
Supporting and skilling more South Australians for the opportunities in our emerging industries remains a key focus of the Marshall Government.

GETTING HIRED AND GETTING THE JOB DONE
When you really love what you do and are keen to take on plumbing work, it’s important to make sure you have the right licence or registration so you can operate on the right side of the law. Plumbing work is often done in conjunction with other trades work, particularly for jobs such as a new home build or a bathroom renovation.
A plumber can perform incidental building work in the performance of plumbing work. For example, a plumber can remove and replace tiles to access pipes. This does not allow a plumber to replace tiles which are not directly related to the performance of plumbing work. Make sure you hold the right licence before advertising or contracting for work, or you could be in breach of licensing legislation and could face enforcement action by Consumer and Business Services (CBS). This could also affect your insurance cover or civil liability.
Performing work
You might be content with sticking to the plumbing component, or you might be interested in taking on responsibility for the whole renovation project.
Even if you hold a contractor’s licence you must still hold a plumber’s registration to be able to physically perform the work. Many registrations have restrictions on the type of work allowed.
It’s essential that you have the right licence or registration before you make yourself available for customers to hire you or for a builder to hire you as a subcontractor for particular types of work.
For example, your registration may require you to work under the direction of an advanced plumber, or may be limited to fire sprinkler fitting work.
Your contractor’s licence could be either a plumbing or building licence:
If you want to extend the range of plumbing work that you do, make sure you update the conditions on your plumber’s registration to cover the work before you take on the new tasks.
• Plumbing contractor’s licence - This licence is suitable if the only work you contract for is plumbing work. • Building work contractor’s licence - This licence can authorise plumbing work and other building work. Most plumbers trading under a builder’s licence also do other building work such as full bathroom renovations.

Working interstate
The new Automatic Mutual Recognition (AMR) scheme will allow workers to work interstate temporarily using their home-state licence or registration without having to apply and pay for a licence in the state or territory they are working. Continued...
13
GETTING HIRED AND GETTING THE JOB DONE
If you move your home state you will need to apply through existing mutual recognition arrangements to obtain a new substantive licence or registration in that state. All states and territories, other than Queensland, have agreed to join the scheme. AMR applies to individuals, not companies On 1 July 2021 AMR commenced in two states and two territories for particular occupations. Some occupations will commence under AMR at a later date in these states and territories. The commencement date for South Australia is yet to be confirmed, but once AMR commences here it means interstate workers will be able to take up work opportunities in SA using their interstate licence/ registration.
For more information about AMR visit https://www.cbs.sa.gov.au/news/ automatic-recognition-licences.
More information about licensing and registration To make sure you have the right licence or registration you can:
• visit www.sa.gov.au/topics/business-and-trade/licensing • contact CBS via occupational@sa.gov.au or phone 131 882 • seek advice from the Master Plumbers Association of SA if you’re a member.

your future, your super legislation what employers need to know about stapling
On 17 June 2021, the Government passed the Your Future, Your Super (YFYS) legislation which introduced three major reforms: • Stapling • Performance test
Cbus is here to help
We understand that this is a big change in how new employees join a super fund and creates extra complexity for employers. Cbus is committed to help you stay on top of these changes to ensure you meet your super obligations.
• Best Financial Interests Duty Stapling poses the greatest change for employers as it is a new law that will link a person to one super fund and the stapled fund will follow the person when they change jobs.
For more information, FAQs and the latest updates, visit cbussuper.com.au/stapling
This is due to come into effect from 1 November 2021.
What does this mean for employers?
When you onboard a new employee, on or after 1 November 2021, and they don’t actively choose their own super fund, you’ll need to manually search for each new employee’s stapled super fund account via the ATO and manually update your payroll system with the employee’s stapled account details. If an employee wants their super paid to a particular fund (including your default fund), you’ll need to provide a Choice of Fund form within 28 days for them to complete and submit it to your HR/payroll team to action their request.

We wish to congratulate and thank AJ Paternoster & Son Pty Ltd for their outstanding contribution of 100 years Membership with Master Plumbers SA! AJ Paternoster were presented their Award and Certificate at our 2021 President’s Lunch, which they were extremely proud to receive. We thought it would be fitting to share a bit of their history with our Members. Arthur James Paternoster grew up in Gawler, where he completed his plumbing apprenticeship with Harold Mozart. Harold Mozart was a tinsmith, gasfitter, gunsmith, patentee and manufacturer of acetylene lamp posts & street lights, used to light the Main Street of Gawler.
Above: Robert Paternoster receiving his 100 Year Member Milestone Award at the 2021 President’s Lunch.
In 1912 Harold moved to Unley and set up the workshop with Arthur, at 205 Unley Road. Today, AJ Paternoster & Son still operates from this address. Arthur’s son Maurice followed in his footsteps and became the ‘son’ of AJ Paternoster & Son. He took the business into early 70’s when in turn, his son, Rob started his apprenticeship at the age of 15. Rob continues to look after the loyal residents of the local area with his nephew Ben. Some are grandchildren of Arthur’s original customers from the early days in Unley. AJP is one of the few remaining businesses still operating in the Unley area from the ‘old’ days, which is something Rob is extremely proud of. Rob has almost made 50 years on the tools and is looking forward to receiving his gold watch! IN MEMORIAM | TOM SIKA
Vale Tom Sika
Master Plumbers SA would like to pay tribute to Tom Sika, who sadly passed away in September. Tom was well known in the plumbing industry as the Manager of Gas Installation and Appliance Safety at the Office of the Technical Regulator (OTR).
Tom joined the OTR Team, Gas installation and appliance safety in South Australia in 2000, and progressed to managing the team. Tom was dedicated to the safety within the gas industry. He was a great colleague, mentor and family man. Tom was well known for his commitment to the work of the OTR and his team. Master Plumbers SA had the pleasure of working with Tom while he presented at the Plumbing and Gas Roadshows over many years.
Tom began his career at SAGASCO (The South Australian Gas Company) in the late 70’s as a gasfitter apprentice and developed into a fine and technically outstanding man.
Staff remember Tom as a kind and supportive man who always took pride in his work and was passionate about the industry.
He was a very private, but at the same time a generous and compassionate person. He made time for anyone in need, whether technical or personal.
Tom will be missed by many people in the industry and beyond. We extend our sincere condolences to Tom’s family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time.

Tips for generating preChristmas cashflow
Consistent processes for recovering unpaid accounts and maintaining cashflow are important all year round, but become even more critical during the Christmas and New Year period. Having seen too many people and businesses suffer with cashflow issues over the Christmas and New Year break, Lynch Meyer Lawyers has put together some key tips to ensure that your cashflow stays on track this festive season.
Our top tips
1. Keep on top of invoicing – make sure you regularly invoice customers in accordance with your terms / credit agreements. Missing dates for invoicing can create longer delays (and headaches) when they fall overdue.
2. Make and keep an updated list of all outstanding and aged
3. Be consistent with notices or demands to customers – have a clear internal process for following up overdue accounts. This may be sending a reminder letter at seven days overdue, and then a phone call at 14 days overdue.
4. Engage with your customers and head contractors – it’s always best to keep lines of communication open with your customers and try to find out if there are any reasons for non-payment. This will assist you to work with the customer / head contractor towards a prompt resolution.
5. Review WIP – now is as good a time as any to reflect upon the year that’s been, and review your outstanding WIP to assess the impact COVID may have had on your turnover projections, future budgets and anticipated profit.
accounts – this will ensure that, heading into the silly season, you are on top of all of your problematic accounts.

What next?
If you are still not receiving payment, it may be time to refer the matter to a solicitor or collection agent. It is important that you avoid letting the debt age, as it becomes much harder to collect. We appreciate that legal action can be intimidating. Our collections team at Lynch Meyer Lawyers ensure that the recovery process is straightforward, efficient and affordable. We tailor an action to each matter, and pay attention to variables that may impact collection. If you have any queries about your unpaid accounts or would like to discuss the collection process, please contact Alice Carter on 8236 7626 or Georgia Gray on 8236 7602. Don’t forget that we offer all members of the Master Plumbers Association a FREE telephone legal hotline!

RIDGID
RIDGID Australia announces a NEW range of Penetrating ball & drop heads to suit the RIDGID FlexShaft machines as part of RIDGID’s commitment to continual development of technological precision products. The ball & drop heads suit either the K9-102 FlexShaft or the K9-204 FlexShaft machine. The Ball head for the K9-102 FlexShaft machine suits 1 ¼” to 2” lines, the ball head for the larger K9-204 machine suits 2” to 3” lines. The drop head for the K9-102 FlexShaft machine suits 1 ½” to 2” lines, the ball head for the larger K9-204 machine suits 3” to 4” lines. Product Features and Applications • A penetrating head can be used with smooth chains when carbide tipped chains are too aggressive. • Drop heads are designed for dropping down stacks in back-to-back applications. • Use alone or combine with other FlexShaft accessories for additional applications. • The difference between a ball head and drop head is the size. The drop heads are slightly larger which makes them better for dropping down stacks/shafts
