MONTBELIARDE HISTORY OF THE BREED The Montbéliarde originates from the Franche-Comté region of eastern France, particularly around Montbéliard and the Jura mountains. Its origins go back to the 18th century, when Swiss farmers from the Bernese Oberland brought cattle into the region. Through systematic selection by local farmers, the breed developed into a hardy, productive dairy animal adapted to the area's long winters, grass-based systems and traditional cheese production. The Montbéliarde was officially recognised as a breed in 1889.
QUALITY OF THE BREED The Montbéliarde is a dual-purpose breed renowned for strength, longevity and functionality. It is valued for good fertility, udder health, strong feet and legs, adaptability and the ability to make excellent use of forage. Strong beef qualities also add value to both calves and cull cows. Milk quality is another major strength, combining good protein levels with a high frequency of BB kappa casein, making Montbéliarde milk particularly well suited to cheese production.
COOPEX MONTBELIARDE Coopex brings genetics from the UMOTEST Montbéliarde breeding programme to breeders worldwide. The programme takes a balanced approach to selection, combining milk and solids with health, fertility, longevity, udder quality, calving ability and functional type. Sires are grouped into four breeding objectives - Powerful, Health, Grazing and Solids - helping breeders quickly identify genetics suited to their production system and breeding goals. A recent introduction of hoof-health on proofs evaluates several hoof disorders and provides composite indexes for overall hoof health, infectious conditions and hoof lesions; increasing the focus on cow longevity and functionality.
