JERSEY THE BREED The Jersey is a British breed of small dairy cattle from Jersey, in the British Channel Islands. The Jersey adapts well to various climates and environments, and unlike many breeds originating in temperate climates, tolerates heat well. It has been exported to many countries worldwide and is now the second biggest dairy breed in the world with 3 million cows. Its ability to adapt to different climates and farming systems has enabled it to develop on all 5 continents. Today, the Jersey breed is selected on every continent.
QUALITY OF THE BREED The breed is well known for its extremely high-quality milk: the highest protein and butterfat contents, added to the highest phosphorus and calcium percentages, the Kappa Casein BB variant (86%), as well as the Beta Casein A2/A2 variant (67%). She is also appreciated for her feed effciency, precocity, calving ease and fertility. Our Jersey breeding program focuses on polled animals with strong breed-typical medium-sized cows, based on the JPI total merit index which has last been updated in 2023. JPI is a strategy to identify high-performing, healthy, and long-lived Jersey cows with durable udders, while driving the breed to higher protein production. JPI - JERSEY PERFORMANCE INDEX We focus on the breed-typical medium-sized and strong Jersey cows. The JPI has 55 % of the emphasis on production of fat and protein. Furthermore, 15 % on fertility, 10 % on survival traits, 10 % on udder traits and 10 % on health traits
