HISTORY OF THE BREED
The success story of Fleckvieh/Simmental started in 1459 in the Bernese Upland (Alp’s area, Switzerland) – Simmental means Simmen valley The goal was to breed an adaptable, robust and high-performing animal (milk, beef, traction power) Middle of the 18th century more than 5000 Fleckvieh animals were exported each year (incl. St. Petersburg in Russia) Between 1830 and 1840 extensive Fleckvieh cattle imports took place to Germany & Austria The biggest Fleckvieh (Dairy Simmental) population in the world is in Germany with more than 700 000 herdbook cows and approximately 1 2 Mio first inseminations. In 2011 genomic selection started.
QUALITY OF THE BREED
The Fleckvieh breed (Dairy Simmental) is highly valued worldwide due to its outstanding suitability as a dual-purpose breed In addition to the high milk yield and milk components, the sale of male calves for fattening is a significant income factor Fleckvieh offers milk, beef and fitness on the highest level. The requirement for polled is also becoming increasingly important in the Fleckvieh breed. Almost 50% of all fi rst inseminations are now done with semen from polled bulls
The Fleckvieh breed adapts perfectly to all farming systems worldwide, like intensive, extensive, grazing and organic, which offers a great flexibility under various market conditions Furthermore, Fleckvieh is excellently suited for crossbreeding with other bovine dairy breeds as well as with zebu breeds

Germany has the world’s largest Fleckvieh population and is running at independent evaluation centers a joint breeding evaluation with other European countries A precise animal identification system combined with a sophisticated and over many decades perfected milk and beef recording system guarantees high data quality. The type evaluation is also an important part Data from more than two million cows from five countries and the genomic profiles of more than 160 000 cows are currently used in the breeding value estimation, in which the genetic potential of current and future breeding animals is determined. To determine the beef breeding values, information from more than 260 000 male animals is used for breeding value estimation.
The Total Merit Index GZW (German: GesamtZuchtWert) shows very well the weighting of the main traits for which the Fleckvieh breed stands
