ABOUT THE MAsTEr CHOrAlE OF sOUTH FlOrIDA

Nationally recognized, the Master Chorale of South Florida (MCSF) has delighted and inspired members of the South Florida community through live performances of choral-orchestral masterworks for more than 20 years. As a collective, MCSF reflects “The Voices of South Florida,” with more than 120 auditioned ensemble singers from the tri-county area under the visionary leadership of our Artistic Director of 10 years, Brett Karlin.

Under Karlin’s tutelage, we envision expanding our role as a leading cultural institution and increasing the number of choral music lovers of all ages.

In our 2023-2024 season, MCSF is poised for growth as our mission reflects our commitment to:

• Perform the finest works ever written for chorus and orchestra

• Commission new choral works from top creative, young, American composers

• Present diverse artists to provide a rich and expansive concert experience

• Demonstrate the power of music to engage our entire community by highlighting the work of our community partners through our Concerts for a Cause

• Reach the next generation of concertgoers—children and their families—through robust educational activities that include our highly successful Family Concerts.

The universal power of music is our legacy. Last year alone MCSF reached audiences of 15,000. With your support, we can realize the full potential of weaving the beauty of classical choral music into the fabric of our lives in South Florida for the next 20 years and beyond.

Our 21st season will be both provocative and profound, with music that expresses the highs and lows of our humanity. We invite you to join us on the journey of musical transformation by making a gift today to the Bravo Circle.

Requiem

One of the most requested works in the choral-orchestral repertoire, Fauré’s Requiem is a tender, heartwarming response to human suffering and grief. Reverent and uplifting, the work paints a picture of paradise and the joy of eternal rest.

Requiem will be preceded by Joshua Rist’s powerful “Invictus” and followed by Joel Thompson’s Seven Last Words of the Unarmed, a moving contemporary work based on the final words of Black Americans killed by authorities, as well as Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings, a profound expression of grief.

Great Mass in C Minor

This dazzling setting of the Mass exemplifies Mozart’s brilliance in uniting music and text to create drama. Written to showcase the vocal talents of his wife Constanze, the Great Mass is an undisputed masterpiece revered by Mozart fans for 250 years.

On this program, the Master Chorale’s performance of the Great Mass in C Minor will be complemented by two motets: Mozart’s glorious Exsultate, jubilate and Joseph Haydn’s Insanae et vanae curae.

Considering Matthew Shepard

This fresh, emotional oratorio honors the life and legacy of Matthew Shepard, who was the victim of one of America’s most notorious anti-LGBTQ+ hate crimes. The work incorporates Matt’s words, interviews with his parents, newspaper accounts of his murder, and soul-rending poems into a piece called “powerfully cathartic” and “a deeply moving experience.”

As this season’s “Concert for a Cause,” a portion of proceeds from these concerts will be shared with SunServe, a local organization providing critical life assistance and mental health services to the most vulnerable youth of South Florida’s LGBTQ+ community.

Meet Mr. Mozart Beethoven for Kids &

The Master Chorale is pleased to present two free 1-hour concerts for children ages 6 to 16 and their families. In Beethoven For Kids, the Master Chorale and a pianist will demonstrate the power and beauty of Beethoven’s works and explain how he was able to infuse them with joy and feelings of humanity.

Mozart was a child prodigy who started composing for the piano at age five, writing many symphonies and operas.

For Meet Mr. Mozart, the Master Chorale and instrumentalists will perform some of his most popular pieces and demonstrate what makes Mozart famous.
