The keystone of our 20th Anniversary season will honor our core mission of performing large-scale classical masterworks with three performances of Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem . Scored for massive choral forces, full symphony orchestra and operatic soloists of the highest order, Verdi’s Requiem is a deeply moving experience that aurally manifests the extremes of human joy, sadness, fear, hope and peace. Do not miss this concert!
We’re so excited to celebrate Master Chorale’s 20th Anniversary—my 10th season with the chorus—with our most dynamic series of concerts yet. We’ve carefully curated a season of thrilling and emotionally moving performances that represent the best of classical masterworks and set the stage for how our next 20 years will look and sound.
Our Comfort and Joy holiday concerts provide the perfect setting for that time of year when we all get a little nostalgic and yearn to be with family and friends. Nothing makes you feel that quintessential holiday spirit like hearing carols sung by a choir. Comfort & Joy will celebrate holiday traditions with your favorite carols and compelling new arrangements of familiar pieces.
Every year Master Chorale will spotlight an organization making a powerful and positive impact in our community. Our inaugural concert, Light in the Shadows, will be presented in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association to help raise awareness of and funds for fighting this devastating disease. This is a particularly moving and emotional project for our singers, and we hope it resonates just as deeply with you. This season’s concerts highlight the breadth and depth of the classical masterwork canon, as well as the Master Chorale’s strong belief that music is a pathway to deepening our curiosity, connecting us to our world and to each other. We hope you’ll join us in celebrating 20 years of meaningful music making and strengthening the cultural fabric of South Florida.
Our final program of the season will mark the beginning of a new annual initiative we are calling “Concerts for a Cause.”
DEAR FRIENDS of the MASTER CHORALE,
Codebreaker: The Alan Turing Story could not be a more timely or appropriate work for our community. James McCarthy’s extraordinary cantata is filled with sweeping cinematic choral lines and driving orchestral rhythms that recount the story of this brilliant mathematician and his struggle to come to terms with his identity amid the unforgiving homophobia of his time.
Bach, Brahms and Burleigh features two polyphonic tours de force by Johann Sebastian Bach that serve as the focal point of our program alongside lesser-known but equally masterful works of Johannes Brahms and Harry T. Burleigh. Brahms’ Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny) and Nänie (Elegy) will transport you to another world with their lavish harmonies and lush romantic melodies. I’m also excited to introduce the stirring music of Burleigh, arguably the most influential Black American composer of the 20th century, who made traditionally Black music available to a worldwide classical audience by arranging spirituals in a style that rivaled famed European composers.

We will continue our partnerships with the Lynn (University) Philharmonia, University of Miami Frost School of Music and many local artists and arts organizations, including the Girl Choir of South Florida, Florida Singing Sons, and leading soloists and instrumentalists. We will also continue to commission new works by leading young American composers.
An organization bent on collaboration, we also partner with individual artists and other arts groups to raise recognition of the choral arts, enhance music education and strengthen the cultural fabric of South Florida. Now, we are building an exciting future on this strong base.
The COVID hiatus gave our Board of Directors time to reflect on these accomplishments and prepare for the next 20 years. They established priorities, which include expanding our outreach with new initiatives, while continuing to provide extraordinary performances.
LOOKING AHEAD with EXCITEMENT!
• Nurture a more connected community through enhanced community collaborations. This season will feature new partnerships with the Stonewall National Museum and Archives and the Alzheimer’s Association.
• Mirror the exciting diversity of South Florida by recruiting singers from underrepresented groups, presenting works by nontraditional composers, reaching out to attract a more diverse audience and adding Board members who represent different perspectives.
• Expand professional staff to increase the capacity for community outreach, educational events and performances.
When you think of the Master Chorale of South Florida, keep in mind that we are your friends, colleagues and neighbors. We are “The Voices of South Florida” who sing the language of the heart and soul to heal, excite, inform and uplift you. We believe, as you do, in the universal power of music.
• Educate future generations with free concerts that introduce young people and their families to the joys of classical music.
The Master Chorale of South Florida is turning 20, and we have a lot to crow about! Now recognized as a force on the national choral scene, the Master Chorale continues to earn praise for outstanding performances of classical masterworks and for commissioning new works that add to the choral-orchestral repertoire.
Holly Strawbridge, President Board of Directors
As we look forward to the next 20 years, we hope you share our excitement and support our dreams.

BRETT CONDUCTORKARLIN, Scored for full symphony orchestra, massive choral forces and operatic soloists of the highest order, Verdi’s Requiem has secured itself as one of the greatest pieces of music ever written. By combining his dramatic operatic style with the text of the Catholic mass for the dead, Verdi created a requiem to which all others are compared. Deeply moving as an exaltation of humanity, this piece seeks out the extremes of joy, sadness, fear, hope and peace.
