MBI’S PERSPECTIVE

ELEVATING

Design Community

Through

Our Relationships With The

BY CHAD KLEPPE PRESIDENT/CEO

The Master Builders of Iowa (MBI) and Iowa’s design community have a partnership that has endured over many decades. Through service and relationship building, MBI and architects have created a network of sharing project information to the benefit of both entities. As you may know, MBI has been in the plan room business for 5 decades. If you include the plan exchange, our origins in the project information space go back even further to 1918. MBI leadership has long known that a strong plan room business starts with solid relationships with architects, engineers, and owner representatives.

2

As MBI rolls out MBI Source1. as its next generation project information portal with enhanced features and AI utilization to better align contractors with projects, the old school methods of relationships and customer service with the design community are still paramount. MBI remains focused on finding better ways to service the design community by looking at efficiencies on how project plans are posted and shared with interested bidders. We are also working to create seamless interactions in how designers connect with contractors on their respective projects.

THE

DESIGN STUDIO With MBI Source1. going live on August 3rd, our development team has now turned its attention to piecing together a platform that will be exclusive to architects and engineers called “The Designer’s Studio”. To get a better idea of what this project is all about, here are just some of the features that designers will be able to utilize:

Format, Produce and Post a Customized Notice to Bidders that Complies with Iowa’s Competitive Bidding Laws

Get Live Dashboard Updates on Prospective Bidders via Plan Downloads or Data on Bidder Intent

Share Project Information and Bidding Documents on a Single Platform

Ability to Conduct Targeted Bidder Outreach to Enhance Contractor Interest and Participation

Use AI to Assist in Identifying Optimal Bid Dates so that Overlap with Other Similar Projects is Avoided

There are no Fees or Costs Associated with Utilization of the MBI Source1. Designer’s Studio

Besides the aspects of the Designer’s Studio portal, MBI is also working to broaden its relations with the AIA of Iowa. Attendees to AIA’s annual convention will see an MBI Source1. presence as well as active sponsorships across a wider spectrum of events and programs. This commitment to building relationships with the design community has always been a priority with MBI, but with the advent of our new plan room platform (MBI Source1.) the effort to connect contractors with designers will have a much broader appeal.

As an MBI member, I would ask that you relay the message to those architects and engineers that your company works with, that MBI wants to enhance its relationship with designers statewide as well as regionally. MBI has always believed that creating a broader connection with the design community benefits all parties involved. By bringing together architects with qualified contractors and vendors, everyone in the building equation benefits, especially the owners – be it public or private entities. If you, or designers in which you normally work with, have questions, or would like to learn more about MBI Source1. and how MBI can be of service in connecting designers with builders, please contact an MBI Source1. team member at 3 Source1@MBI.Build.

Why Membership Provides

A COMPETITIVE EDGE in an Ever-Changing Marketplace BY BEN HAMMES

VICE PRESIDENT OF ASSOCIATION AFFAIRS & MEMBER ENGAGEMENT

The construction industry has always been built on relationships, but in today’s rapidly changing environment, relationships alone are not enough. Companies need access to information before their competitors, resources that improve efficiency, education that develops their workforce, and an advocate who understands the challenges they face. That is the advantage of being a member of MBI. Membership is more than a logo on a website or a line item on a budget—it is access to a collection of exclusive resources, opportunities, and connections designed specifically to help Iowa’s commercial construction companies succeed. Because that’s what we do: ADVOCATE, EDUCATE AND PROVIDE RESOURCES. For MBI members, the benefits begin with access to information. In an industry where timing can determine if a company wins or loses, having reliable project intelligence is critical. Through innovative services like The Project Source and MBI Source 1., members gain access to a powerful tool designed to connect contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, owners, and design professionals with commercial construction opportunities across Iowa. By providing members with earlier insight into upcoming projects, key contacts, bidding information, and project details, MBI helps companies position themselves ahead of the competition and make smarter decisions about where to invest their time and resources. Membership also provides an unmatched commitment to professional development and workforce advancement. Through programs such as MBI-LIVE, leadership classes, safety training, conferences, and specialized educational opportunities, members have access to training designed around the real-world needs of the construction industry. Whether a company is developing its next generation of leaders, strengthening its safety culture, or helping employees build new technical skills, MBI provides resources – like our wage & benefits survey - that

allow businesses to invest in their people and remain competitive in a challenging labor market. Beyond business resources and education, MBI membership provides companies with a unified voice on the issues that directly impact their operations. Every year, MBI works on behalf of its members to advocate on legislation, regulations, and policies affecting commercial construction throughout Iowa. Issues involving public bidding, workforce development, taxation, infrastructure investment, and economic growth all have a direct impact on the industry. Through membership, companies have a seat at the table and the strength of an organization representing hundreds of businesses working toward a common goal. One of the most valuable advantages of MBI membership is the ability to build relationships with some of the most respected professionals in Iowa’s construction industry. From networking events and conferences to committees and peer groups, members gain opportunities to connect with industry leaders, share ideas, identify solutions, and develop partnerships that often last throughout their entire careers. In construction, where trust and reputation matter, those connections are invaluable. At a time when companies are being asked to do more with less, the advantages provided through MBI membership have never been more important, and the ROI higher. The organizations that thrive will be those that have access to the right information, the right people, and the right resources at the right time. We are committed to providing those advantages exclusively to its members. In an era where every competitive edge matters, belonging to MBI isn't just another business decision—it may be one of the most important investments a construction company can make. is Paving the Way for the Future of our Workforce? BY ADAM DOBRASKA

MEMBER & CLIENT SERVICES COORDINATOR

Did you know that MBI had a grant solicitation process for non-profits and educational institutions called MBIWORKS? Also, did you know that for these entities to apply for said funding, they are required to partner with at least one MBI member company? We encourage all MBI members to review the RFP once created and come up with new and innovative ideas and ways to partner with non-profits and educational institutions who are or will be encouraging kids to enter the trades. The mission of this fund is focused heavily on the direct placement of people entering the commercial construction workforce. We believe that the opportunities that come out of MBIWORKS will have a lasting impact on the future of the construction workforce. Members will be able to apply for this funding stream through our website, at www.mbi.build/MBIWORKS.

There’s no time like the present to start thinking about these ideas for your proposals. Your collective help in forging these partnerships with non-profits and educational institutions to create a meaningful project/ program is vital when shaping the future of workforce in the commercial construction industry. Once the RFP has launched, make sure to spread the word to any nonprofit or educational institution that you think would be able to benefit from it.

It isthis an edition area of of safety management systems that become overlooked once implemented. The safety tip for INSIDEMBI focuses on how to can keepeasily Hazard Communication once implemented. The safety tip for this edition of INSIDEMBI focuses on how to keep Hazard Communication programs functioning as intended. programs functioning as intended. Most companies have safety inspections or audits scheduled on regular frequencies to help reduce injuries and illnesses and ensure that policies, programs, and procedures are operational. One way to focus on a Hazard Communication Program is to “spot check” a product found onsite during one of those site visits. Once a product is identified, then the safety professional or inspector can work through procedures for bulk storage, container labeling, secondary containers, safety data sheet access, and personal protective equipment during use. Any issues found can be identified and corrected as needed. Below are a few key takeaways CSSI consultants have found during these “spot checks.” Most issues found relate to secondary container labeling and access to safety data sheets.

! SECONDARY CONTAINER LABELING

When a product is put into a secondary container for use, such as a spray bottle, it must be labeled. A worker may write the name of the product and the hazard statement(s) for that product on the label of the secondary container provided the safety data sheets are immediately available to all throughout the work shift. A best practice option would be to print labels for secondary containers that are GHS compliant with the name of the product, manufacturer information and emergency contact information, signal word, hazard statements(s), precautionary statement(s), and pictogram(s) associated with that product that can be distributed to workers. Many chemical inventory10 management software systems and digital safety data sheet database products can print GHS compliant labels for secondary containers in various sizes.

RD

NICATION There is one exception to the secondary container labeling rule. Any secondary container that stays under the exclusive control of a worker and the product is used up completely does not need to be labeled. If there is never a product stored or left unattended in a secondary container, OSHA allows the container to not have a label placed on it.

! SAFETY DATA SHEET ACCESS

Access to safety data sheets remains an issue found on projects. Whether a company is managing their SDS in hard copy binders, or through a digital database, all workers must have access to the information. Most often, we see the same challenge – a book or a QR code posted ends up locked away in a trailer or left with an individual when they leave the jobsite. Ensure that access remains if workers are active on a project; however, that looks in your organization. Post additional QR codes, have additional copies of binders, or move the information somewhere that will not be restricted should someone leave the site. Another observation is to ensure that SDS binders or digital databases are kept up to date. Often, we find that safety data sheets are missing, incomplete, or out of date. These “spot checks” can help with keeping safety data sheets current, so workers have the information they need about the products they are working with. By incorporating regular “spot checks” into safety inspections or audits, companies can ensure their Hazard Communication Programs are functioning efficiently to keep employees safe and healthy, ensure regulatory compliance, and support operational performance. Should your company need any assistance with safety and health training or onsite services, CSSI is here to help! Please contact Managing Director, Chris Pankow at Chris@IowaCSSI.com, or Curriculum and Training Manager, Anna Copeland at Anna@IowaCSSI.com with any questions or for more information.

Built for the Field:

Introd u ci n g t he

MBI

BUILD Her

BY TARA RINEHART

VICE PRESIDENT OF INDUSTRY EDUCATION

At Master Builders of Iowa, we know that building a stronger industry starts with the people on the jobsite — and that means every person. That's why the MBI BuildHer committee, made up of dedicated construction industry members, came together to create something practical, powerful, and built for the field: a 10-part Toolbox Talk series tied directly to the Top 10 Ways to Support Women in Construction resource. This isn't a corporate initiative handed down from a conference room. It came from real people in real companies who believe Iowa's construction industry is stronger when everyone has a seat at the table — and the tools to stay there. Each of the 10 toolbox talks covers one key topic and is designed to be short, practical, and immediately usable on any jobsite. Each talk includes a one-page handout with key stats, conversation starters, and an action item your crew can commit to that week, along with an attendance sign-in sheet on the back. Paired with a short video presented by MBI's Dr. Tara Rinehart, each toolbox talk gives 12

foremen, superintendents, and safety leaders everything they need to lead a meaningful conversation in minutes — no prep required. Whether you're covering respect on the jobsite, the importance of properly fitting PPE, or how to make sure every voice gets heard in the pre-task huddle, these talks meet your crew exactly where they are. The full series is available now for MBI members to download on our MBI BuildHer website when you click on the specific topic. We encourage you to work through all 10 — one at a time, at whatever pace fits your schedule — and share them across your teams, jobsites, and leadership meetings. This is the kind of culture work that doesn't require a big budget or a full training day. It requires showing up consistently, one conversation at a time. That's how we build an industry where everyone can thrive.

Iowa's Political Landscape HEADING INTO NOVEMBER 2026

BY BEN HAMMES

VICE PRESIDENT OF ASSOCIATION AFFAIRS & MEMBER ENGAGEMENT

As Iowa heads toward the November 3, 2026, general election, voters will decide on one of the most consequential ballots the state has seen in years. For the first time in more than a decade, the governor's office is open following Governor Kim Reynolds' decision not to seek another term. At the federal level, Iowa will also elect a new U.S. Senator to replace Senator Joni Ernst, while all four congressional seats, every seat in the Iowa House of Representatives, half of the Iowa Senate, and every statewide constitutional office will appear on the ballot. The combination of open-seat races and legislative elections means Iowa's political direction for the next four years is very much in play. The marquee statewide contest is the race for governor, where Republican nominee Zach Lahn will face Democratic nominee Rob Sand. Both candidates have emphasized different visions for Iowa's future, ranging from tax policy and economic development to environmental regulation and public health. Meanwhile, the open U.S. Senate race adds another layer of significance, as Iowa voters will choose Senator Ernst's successor at a time when control of Congress remains highly competitive. Down-ballot races also deserve attention, particularly legislative contests that could determine whether Republicans maintain their current governing majorities or Democrats regain influence over the legislative agenda. For Iowa's construction industry, these elections carry implications well beyond politics. The next governor and Legislature will influence funding priorities for transportation infrastructure, vertical construction, water systems, workforce development, housing, and economic development incentives. Decisions surrounding data center development, property taxes, bonding authority, procurement laws, environmental permitting, apprenticeship investments, and regulatory reform all directly affect the cost and speed of delivering construction projects. Likewise, federal decisions resulting from Iowa's congressional delegation and new U.S. Senator could impact infrastructure funding, workforce immigration policy, energy development, and implementation of federal grant programs that many public owners rely upon. The greatest unknown heading into November is whether Iowa voters choose continuity or change. Republicans continue to hold structural advantages after years of electoral success, but competitive statewide races have attracted significant attention and fundraising from both parties. Even if party control remains unchanged, the arrival of new statewide leaders will inevitably reshape priorities, relationships, and policy discussions across state government. For industries that depend on predictable public investment and regulatory certainty, leadership

16

transitions often create both opportunities and periods of adjustment. Regardless of political affiliation, Iowa's construction industry has a vested interest in the outcome of this election. Contractors, design professionals, suppliers, and project owners all benefit from understanding how elected officials influence the business climate. The decisions made by voters this November will help shape Iowa's capital investment strategy, workforce policies, permitting environment, and procurement framework for years to come. As campaigns intensify throughout the fall, construction leaders should remain engaged, informed, and prepared to work with whichever leaders voters send to Des Moines and Washington. If you’d like to discuss any of MBI’s Government Affairs programs, please reach out to Ben Hammes at BHammes@MBI.Build.

PROFESSIONAL PROFILE

JASON KUNZ 20,000 People. 36 Countries. And He's Coming Back to Iowa.

BY TARA RINEHART

VICE PRESIDENT OF INDUSTRY EDUCATION

Jason Kunz has spent his career doing one thing with remarkable consistency: making the people around him safer, stronger, and more equipped to lead. With over a decade of experience at 3M spanning technical, sales, and leadership roles, Jason built a foundation that took him well beyond the jobsite — delivering keynotes and workshops to more than 20,000 people across 36 countries. That kind of reach doesn't happen by accident. It happens when someone genuinely believes the safety and health profession deserves a louder, more powerful voice — and decides to be that voice. As founder of Kunz Company, Jason channels that same energy into building professional communities where safety leaders are empowered, not just trained. He holds both the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and 18

Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designations, but he'd be the first to tell you the credentials matter far less than the people. His work is driven by a simple conviction: elevate the profession, and you elevate every worker it protects. Jason joins Master Builders of Iowa as the lead presenter for the newly transformed Building a Safety Champion program — and will return in February 2027 to headline the Safety MasterClass at MBI's Winter Conference. A husband, community advocate, and co-founder of Best Christmas Ever, Jason brings both the expertise and the heart that Iowa's construction safety community deserves.

Build Better Lead Stronger What to Expect at the 2027 MBI Lunch Club BY TARA RINEHART

VICE PRESIDENT OF INDUSTRY EDUCATION

Join MBI members from around the state for lunch, conversation with colleagues, and ninety minutes built around a question worth carrying home: How will I take this back and make my employees well? This year’s Lunch Club focuses on Physical Wellness — one of MBI’s 8 Dimensions of Wellness — and it’s designed as a working session. We’ll build it the way you’d build anything. Foundation, inspection, structure, problem-solving, blueprint, breaking ground. You’ll start by taking an honest look at your company, work through six areas that shape whether your people can do this job and be well, and finish by drawing up what you can actually do to make it happen. You’ll leave with a plan, not just a motivation to be well. The deliverable is a Company Wellness Blueprint — six work packages covering nutrition, sleep, hydration, movement, ergonomics, and recovery and mental health, each with an owner, a start date, a first action, and a measure you could check in ninety days. You’ll also take back other resources to assist in your company’s physical wellness journey. We want you to leave with the tools that impact your company and the industry.

Leadership is an ability, not a title and with the proper training and experience, anyone can be a leader from any position within an organization. The acquisition and development of leadership skills is critical for those individuals who want to have lasting careers in commercial construction serving as high performing leaders within their organization. Elective credits can be earned from any or all of these training and professional development categories. Excess credits in the above categories will automatically be calculated into the Elective category. Ethics is what separates Master Builders from the rest. Without ethical principles guiding the commercial construction industry, we would not be where we are today. To ensure that ethical principles remain a key component of the industry, individuals should participate in ethics workshops and activities toward becoming a high performing leader. Ecological Construction is not a new concept. Commercial construction has always had an impact on the environment. When you consider air, soil, and water, construction company employees should be aware of the daily impact to the general public as well as the long term environmental impact their work creates. Safety is at the heart of any good builder and is a cornerstone of Master Builders of Iowa. To be considered a Master Builder, an individual must acquire and develop the skills necessary to work or manage a project at a high level regarding safety. Project Management is the responsibility of a host of individuals on a commercial construction project. Whether you are a senior leader, project manager, supervisor, or craftworker, there are skills within the broad context of project management that play a critical role in determining your success and that of the project. YOUR CHOICE credits are flexible credits within the MBD Award program that allow participants to apply credits to any one of the 6 categories: Project Management, Ecological, Safety, Leadership, Ethics or Electives. Individuals communicate with MBI as to where they would like these placed as part of the 150 credits needed to receive the award. 21

Education Curriculum BLUEPRINT BASICS

MBI BUILDHER

Unlock the essential skills needed to confidently read and interpret blueprints in the field! In this interactive session, we’ll cover the fundamental aspects of plan reading, equipping you with the tools necessary to effectively navigate various types of construction documents. Participants will dive into the basics of sections, elevations, reflected ceiling plans, schedules, and references, gaining a comprehensive understanding of how these elements come together in a complete plan set.

The 2027 BuildHer lineup runs across six sessions from January through November, mixing virtual and in-person formats. It opens January 19 (virtual) with Kate Glantz on culture-driven recruitment and storytelling, then moves to an in-person full-day session March 23 in West Des Moines with Alicia and Scott Ready tackling suppressed strengths and personal ROI. May 18 returns to a virtual format with Ashley Lentz on leading through tension and change, and July 27 delivers a full-day, multi-speaker event in Cedar Rapids featuring Kortney Peagram on communication/conflict/coaching and Ali Matuszak on closing the gap between assumption and accountability.

By the end of this session, you’ll feel empowered to read blueprints with confidence, ensuring you can effectively contribute to any project. Whether you’re new to the field or have not taken the blueprint reading course yet, this session will provide the foundational knowledge you need to succeed in construction. 3 Project Management Credits

Date: January 15, 2027 - WDM

The series closes out with two more sessions: a September 14 virtual talk from Adam Hoots on building capability in others (not just completing tasks), and a November 9 capstone full-day event in Cedar Falls with back-to-back speakers — Kate Glantz returning with “From Page to Stage,” a storytelling-for-recruitment session anchored by a facilitated “Behind the Build” panel spotlight featuring 4 current women in the field, followed by Jason Jacobson closing with “See. Adapt. Choose.,” a session on examining unconscious communication lenses shaped by gender and experience in construction. Across the lineup, the throughline is building capability, voice, and belonging for teams in construction — moving from external recruitment/ storytelling themes early in the year toward internal leadership, communication, and accountability skills by fall, all delivered through highly interactive, workshopstyle formats rather than lecture. 17.5 Leadership Credits | 2 Project Management Credits | 6 Your Choice Credits

Education Curriculum THE LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE (4 session series)

FOUNDATIONS OF A FIELD LEADER (2 session series)

The Leadership Experience is a leadership training program that addresses the areas of communication, collaboration, culture, and customer. These four areas are critical in all levels of leadership and attendees are challenged to take the learning of previous leadership classes to the next level. Becoming an effective leader requires an understanding of people, personalities, attitudes, goals, and more. The Leadership Experience stresses to attendees that the most important person they will ever lead is themselves.

This field leadership development program is designed to provide attendees with a host of tools and information to help them excel as leaders in the areas of leadership, risk management, communication, and personal effectiveness. Leading a team, crew, or group of individuals in a commercial construction project environment takes an exceptional person with the right skill set and personality, along with construction knowledge and awareness. Leaders in the field must be able to manage time, equipment, materials, and most importantly, people. This program will provide the tools and help develop the skills of attendees in becoming successful leaders.

In addition to the classroom training, attendees receive one-on-one executive leadership coaching from our Executive Coach, David Rabiner. Becoming a great construction leader does not boil down to what you know technically, nor is it about who you know. It is about you, your character; your ability to lead yourself and others; your influence in good times and bad; and your individual career journey. This program changes individuals on multiple levels as leaders in their company, home and community. 32 Leadership Credits

Education Curriculum PROJECT COORDINATOR DEVELOPMENT SERIES (4 session series) Project Coordinators play a critical role in the success of a construction project—but too often, the position is treated primarily as an administrative role and defined by a list of tasks rather than by its broader project impact. This program is designed to clarify the role of the Project Coordinator and bridge the gap between completing processes and understanding how that work affects the project across the full project lifecycle—from preconstruction and project startup through execution, closeout, and post-construction. Participants will learn how their responsibilities connect to the broader project, how strong coordination increases the capacity of the Project Manager and supports the field team, and how accurate information, proactive follow-up, and sound judgment help keep work moving forward. The course goes beyond process training. It combines practical tools, construction knowledge, real-world examples, and the perspectives of both Project Coordination and Project Management. Participants will gain a clearer understanding of what it means to serve as a trusted project partner—not simply someone who completes assigned tasks, but someone who understands the project, anticipates needs, protects critical details, identifies issues, and contributes to stronger decisions and better project outcomes. Participants will leave with greater clarity about the purpose and value of their role, increased confidence, stronger project awareness, and practical tools they can immediately apply to increase their impact on their teams, projects, and organizations.

OSHA 30 HOUR - CONSTRUCTION This course is a comprehensive training program designed to provide an in-depth understanding of safety and health standards set by OSHA and emphasizes hazard recognition, avoidance, control and prevention in the construction industry. Revu makes both taking and using measurements to complete takeoffs extremely easy, once you learn how to use the tools they supply you with. In this session, you will learn how to take accurate measurements through calibrating a scale and using a wide variety of measurement tools. You will also learn how to track takeoffs and perform estimation using the Markups List and custom column creation.

Construction projects generally require the use of a variety of forms sent between parties, such as RFIs or Submittals. In Bluebeam Revu eXtreme, you can create fillable PDF forms using a variety of common form elements, such as radio buttons and signature fields. Along with forms, Revu allows you to create Digital IDs and Signatures for the certification and validation of documents. This course will cover how to use Bluebeam Revu’s form creation and digital signature tools to quickly create, manage, and validate project forms.

Bluebeam: Session 4 - Managing Field Issues

When managing large projects, you may have thousands of files that you need to access daily. To help team members access the documents they need, you may want to create a digital project dashboard. Digital dashboards keep track of all documents and revisions within one interactive PDF. This comprehensive session will cover how to use Bluebeam Revu’s powerful hyperlinking and design features to create effective, customized dashboards that cater to your specific project needs.

Once a project has started, tracking progress and identifying field issues is incredibly important for both quality assurance and quality control. In this session, we will cover how to use Bluebeam Revu to identify any issues that arise, manage their associated data, and ensure that the entire team has access to this information. Here, you will learn how to create and place custom punch keys, embed associated images and videos, assign statuses and responsibilities, and create summary reports to highlight each issue individually.

PRIMAVERA P6 SERIES Primavera P6: Session 1 - Basic Project Creation

Primavera P6: Session 3 - Managing Scheduling Errors

In order to utilize Primavera P6 to create and manage a comprehensive project schedule, you first need to create a project and add important metadata. In this hands-on training, we will start by working through the New Project Wizard to create a new project and setting basic project details. We will then work on creating a Work Breakdown Structure and adding activities to it. Using the Activity Details section, we will look at the different activity types and details in order to create a dynamic project schedule. Then we will identify logical activity relationship ties to best implement the sequence of work to be performed. Lastly, we will cover using the Schedule tool to perform the Critical Path Method of Scheduling, which will give each activity early and late start and finish dates. By the end of this session, you will have all the knowledge required to create a functional schedule to track all of your project’s work - along with tips and tricks to do it as efficiently as possible.

A project schedule with many tasks and relationships will usually incur some user error, such as missed activity relationships or loops in logic. In this session, we will start by looking at Primavera P6’s schedule Log File, which will identify all errors that should be corrected before finishing the baseline schedule. Here you will learn how to manage and correct a wide variety of common scheduling errors, including negative float, negative lag, and out-of-sequence activities.

Date: August 11, 2027 Primavera P6: Session 2 - Performing Status Updates Once an initial baseline schedule is finalized and the project begins, updates to the schedule should be done on a regular basis to maintain a record - normally on a monthly or weekly basis. In this session, we will outline the process of performing a standard status update in Primavera P6. Using the Progress Spotlight tool, we will look at identifying activities and updating their statuses by adding actual dates, costs, and units. Once the activities have been scheduled, we will look at creating additional baselines to save a copy of the project and moving the data date forward. Once we have several baselines created, we will cover how to use the Schedule Comparison tool to compare the actual activity dates with their planned dates. This will determine whether the project is progressing early, late, or just on time. 2 Project Management Credits

The use of layouts lets you view and save different configurations of data, allowing you to switch from a cost loading view to an activity code view with just a few clicks. In this session, you will learn how to customize the P6 interface by adjusting the toolbars, menus, and tool shortcuts that appear. Looking at the Activities, Projects, and Resources screens, you will also learn how to customize the appearance of a single screen and save it as a layout for reuse. 2 Project Management Credits

SUICIDE PREVENTION SERIES

LEAN CONSTRUCTION SERIES

Suicide Prevention Series: Session 1 - Understanding Suicide & Starting the Conversation

Lean Construction: Session 1 - What is lean construction? And WHY does it fail? With NO BULLSHIDO!

Suicide is the leading cause of death among construction workers — surpassing on-site fatalities. Yet it remains one of the least talked-about safety issues in the industry. This first session breaks that silence. Drawing from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Talk Saves Lives curriculum, participants will build foundational awareness of suicide risk, learn how to recognize warning signs in coworkers, and gain the confidence to start a conversation that could save a life.

The session will challenge participants to recognize when Lean tools are being implemented as isolated activities rather than as part of a connected production and learning system. Most importantly, attendees will leave understanding that Lean Construction is not a collection of sticky-note exercises. It is a different way of thinking about work: improving flow, solving problems, learning continuously, and making the work better for the people who perform it. The session builds from the presentation’s introduction to Lean history, the five guiding principles, the eight wastes, pull production, Personal Kanban, PDCA, customer value, and Plus/Delta reflection.

Date: September 8, 2027 Suicide Prevention Series: Session 2 - Intervention Skills & Building a Culture of Support Knowing the warning signs is the first step — knowing what to do next is what saves lives. Session 2 moves from awareness to action, giving participants hands-on practice with intervention techniques and practical tools to apply on the job. Participants will also explore how leaders and crew members can help shift the culture of their workplace toward one where asking for help is seen as strength, not weakness. 2 Leadership Credits

Attendees will learn why traditional command-and-control leadership often runs counter to Lean principles. The session will challenge leaders to move from being the person with all the answers to becoming the person who creates the conditions for others to think, experiment, learn, and improve. The central message is simple: Lean is not about getting more from people. It is about developing people so they can improve the work, the system, and themselves. Session 1 introduces the visible Lean principles and practices, including value, flow, pull, waste reduction, visualization, PDCA, and continuous improvement. Session 2 examines the leadership system and human behaviors that allow those practices to work in the real world. 2 Leadership Credits

PROCORE FOR PROJECT SUPERINTENDENTS SERIES

In this hands-on session, Danielle McGeough breaks down the difference between burnout (you’re exhausted) and demoralization (you’re blocked from doing work that matters)—because the fix for each is completely different, and most people treat them the same. Then she hands you a practical, no-fluff method for actually shutting down at the end of the day, so you can be present at home and come back sharp.

Superintendents are the leaders on every jobsite, and their ability to manage field activities in real time is critical. Procore gives them the digital tools to access drawings, track daily progress, document issues, and oversee subcontractors right from an iPad or mobile device. This session focuses on the tools Superintendents use most: Drawings, Specifications, Daily Logs, Photos, Inspections, Observations, and T&M Tickets. You’ll learn how to document site conditions, communicate issues, and ensure teams stay aligned using Procore’s mobile interface. Make Sure to Put CONSTRUCTION WEEK 2026 O n Y o u r C a l e n d a r! BY ADAM DOBRASKA

MEMBER & CLIENT SERVICES COORDINATOR

The construction industry is continuing to thrive, and that’s in large part due to the people that work in the industry. They don’t necessarily get all the credit that they deserve rightfully. Start preparing for how you and your employees will celebrate Construction Week 2026. 42

Ways to Celebrate

Construction Week 2026 • Shine a spotlight on your exceptional field workers. • Hold a company celebration (breakfast, lunch, break, or outing). • Contact a local media outlet to speak about the importance of Construction Week. • Get into a classroom and speak about rewarding careers. This year, Construction Week will be celebrated October 5th-9th. As we have done in previous years, we’re planning to hold four different appreciation lunches on job sites yet to be determined. This will allow us to gather some press afterwards, and to show appreciation for the extremely valuable individuals in the construction industry. This is the week we dedicate to promoting the men and women in your companies and the safe and effective job that they perform! Construction Week would not be possible without the dedication and effort from hardworking members like you. Growing the industry is a main focal point for us, but it’s equally important to take some time to shine a spotlight on those that make this industry stronger through the work that they do.

Follow us on LinkedIn and Facebook to join us in recognizing the exceptional field workers in the commercial construction industry during Construction Week 2026! There are many ways for you and your company to get involved in celebrating Construction Week. Construction Week information can be found on the MBI website at www.mbi.build/ contructionweek or scan the QR code here.

• Request that Construction Week be added to everyone’s calendar in the office. • Promote Construction Week on all your social media channels by using #ConstructionWeek26 and tag MBI.

Let us know how you plan to celebrate so we can continue to build off the successes of the past. We love hearing about the new and innovative ways that you celebrate Construction Week. Have fun, get creative, and show our state that this is the best industry to be a part of! Construction Week is a culmination of all the hard work that these individuals put in year-round, so let’s make it memorable!

A PROGRAM REIMAGINED

Gets a Fresh Take!

BY TARA RINEHART

Some programs just need a refresh. Others need reimagination. After gathering feedback through a member focus group, Master Builders of Iowa took a hard look at Building a Safety Champion — and decided it deserved the latter. The result is a fundamentally transformed leadership development experience built around one clear conviction: the most important safety

44

moments don't happen in a classroom. They happen in the field, in the middle of a difficult conversation, in the seconds before work begins on a high-risk task. The refreshed Building a Safety Champion equips construction leaders with the mindset, skills, and field-tested tools required to influence crews, manage serious risk, and lead safety where it matters most — in the work itself.

Here's What's Hitting the Feed!

VICE PRESIDENT OF INDUSTRY EDUCATION

Season 4 of the MBI Edge Podcast is officially underway, and the response from Iowa's construction community has made one thing clear: when you ask members what they want to hear, they show up to listen. Hosts Tara Rinehart and Ben Hammes have spent the season putting member feedback into action, and the result is a lineup that feels less like a podcast and more like a running conversation with the industry itself. The Talking Heads series has quickly become a centerpiece of the season, and it's worth pausing why it's resonating the way it is. Rather than treating professional development and personal finance as separate tracks, the series treats them as the same conversation — because for most construction professionals, they are. A field leader thinking about a 401K contribution is making the same kind of long-view decision as one weighing a promotion into management. By pairing real-life topics like home buying, loans, and financial planning with wellness and career growth conversations, Talking Heads gives listeners practical, immediately usable insight that goes beyond what a typical industry podcast covers — and its content you genuinely won't find packaged this way anywhere else in Iowa construction. Alongside that, the listener's Q&A segment has started putting your questions directly in front of the hosts — proof that the "submit your burning questions" invite wasn't just a launch gimmick. If you've got something you've been wanting Tara or Ben to weigh in on, MBI's social platforms are still open for submissions, and there's a good chance your question ends up on the next episode. However you like to consume your content, Season 4 keeps meeting you there: full episodes on YouTube, short-form clips for the commute or the job trailer, blog recaps for readers, and highlights on Instagram. If you haven't been following along yet, there's no better time to start — find MBI on Instagram, YouTube, and at MBI.Build to stay in the loop as new episodes drop.

Breaking Ground on

W I N T E R CONFERENCE 2027 BY TARA RINEHART

VICE PRESIDENT OF INDUSTRY EDUCATION

Mark your calendars — MBI's 2027 Annual Winter Conference is coming to the Iowa Events Center in the heart of downtown Des Moines on February 23–24, and it is shaping up to be an experience worth clearing your schedule for. Two full days of world-class keynotes, breakout sessions, and bootcamps built for every level of the industry — field to office, emerging leader to seasoned executive. Our Build Iowa Breakfast will open Tuesday morning with Jake Thompson, whose Beat Yesterday message challenges construction professionals to stop measuring themselves against everyone else and start competing with the only person who matters — who they were yesterday. From mindset to margin, this is the kind of opening that sets the tone for everything that follows. The Industry Excellence Luncheon will be back the same as last year to highlight the excellent projects, teams, and individuals in our industry. Wednesday morning kicks off with a wellness keynote at the Built to Perform Breakfast featuring Charles Clark, who flips teams on their heads with The "I" in 50

Team - The Playbook to Create a Winning Culture and Thriving Business followed by an afternoon that closes the conference on a high note — the Power Up with Purpose Luncheon with Heather Younger, author and leadership expert whose session Built from Within: The Self Leadership Imperative for High Pressure Work delivers a message that is equal parts honest and actionable. Sprinkled throughout both days are breakout sessions covering everything from AI tools for the field and office with Carl Britton Jr., to emotional intelligence for construction leaders with Nic Bittle, to financial performance with Mark Stanley, to a deeply personal session on safety culture from Regina McMichael. And if you are a foreman, superintendent, or field leader — this year was built with you in mind. We heard your feedback, and we answered it. Sessions like Bubba Herrick's Connect Like Your Life Depends on It, the energy-based safety work from CRSA, and field-focused AI sessions with Carl Britton Jr. were specifically selected because great conferences shouldn't stop at the office door. The people building Iowa have a seat at this conference.

SAFETY NEWS

BY: ANNA COPELAND CSSI CURRICULUM & TRAINING MANAGER

The news is out of Federal OSHA. They have released the annual civil penalty update and regulatory agenda for 2026. Typically released by January 15th each year, the adjustments to OSHA’s civil penalties were published on May 21, 2026. Also published recently were the Unified Agenda of Federal Regulatory and Deregulatory Actions, which came out on July 3rd. This detailed what OSHA will be working on and set some timelines for completion. They typically update their agenda in the spring and fall each year.

No InFLATION Adjustment for Penalties There will be no inflation-based increase to OSHA penalties in 2026. When the deadline came and went for the annual inflation adjustments, many employers were left wondering what was going on. According to Memorandum M-26-11, the Bureau of Labor Statistics could not provide the required information due to government shutdown, and no alternative calculation can be used to adjust the penalties. The decision was made to hold the penalty structure at the 2025 levels. There was an adjustment to the minimum threshold levels and the category of employers eligible to receive size reductions as referenced in the OSHA Field Operations Manual in Chapter 6. See the table below for the current minimum and maximum penalty schedule. Type of Violation Serious Other-Than-Serious Repeat Willful Posting Requirements 52 Failure to Abate

Penalty Minimum $1,085 / violation $0 / violation $4,256 / violation $11,823 / violation $0 / violation N/A

Penalty Maximum $16,550 / violation $16,550 / violation $165,514 / violation $165,514 / violation $165,550 / violation $165,514 / day unabated

How does this affect Iowa employers? Iowa OSHA adopted the Federal penalty structure under Iowa Code Chapter 88, effective in 2017. The adjustments to the penalties are automatically incorporated by reference into the Iowa Code.

Regulatory Agenda

OSHA

Update: Penalty Adjustments and Regulatory Agenda

The 2026 regulatory agenda is out after having no update this spring or the fall of 2025. It is good to get a gauge on where OSHA is focusing their efforts. There is movement on the Heat Injury and Illness Prevention in Outdoor and Indoor Work Settings proposed rule. They have updated the timeline to include a supplemental notice of proposed rulemaking for December of 2026 and Final Rule by October 2027. Employers will want to keep an eye on the happenings of this rule. This will have a significant impact on all industries once issued. Starting in 2026, OSHA is opening public comment periods on proposed deregulation on respiratory protection requirements, and specific chemical substances which require respiratory protection when handling or working with those substances. The list of substances includes asbestos, benzene, cadmium, lead, and many more. Proposed rules that should also see movement in 2026 include the Mechanical Power Press Update, Walking-Working Surface Update, Welding in Construction Confined Spaces Update, Amendments to the Cranes and Derricks in Construction Standard, and the Lock-out/Tag-out Update.

Updates that have been moved to the longer-term timeline include an update to the Process Safety Management rule, Shipyard Fall Protection, Communication Tower Safety, Powered Industrial Trucks, and Revisions to Table 1 and Medical Surveillance for Crystalline Silica. What happens when a federal rule goes into effect? Work executed in states under federal authority will follow compliance dates under Federal OSHA. If you operate in a state plan, there will be delays once a rule is issued. State plans must adopt standards that are at least as effective as the federal standards that are passed. Once a final (federal) rule goes into effect, the State of Iowa can choose to adopt the same regulation or one that will protect workers equally. There is typically a time for adoption of the rules – usually six months for state plan programs to roll out their updates. Although the timing of the information was not what employers are accustomed to, OSHA is releasing information and signaling changes in both enforcement and future rulemaking priorities. The penalty updates signal revised enforcement policies, and the regulatory agenda outlines OSHA’s planned actions on existing and proposed workplace safety and health standards. Should your company need any assistance with OSHA compliance or safety and health programs, policies, or procedures, CSSI is here to help! CSSI offers a wide range of safety and health services and training. Please reach out to Managing Director, Chris Pankow at Chris@IowaCSSI.com with any questions or for more information! 53

Success on the jobsite—and across the construction industry— hinges on a few essential elements that, when intentionally combined, create powerful outcomes where everyone wins: employees, companies, and customers alike. At the core of this success are critical attributes like teamwork, leadership, communication, accountability, personal responsibility, budgeting, contracts, implementing change and quality control. And standing at the center of it all is the leadership partnership between project managers and superintendents. This interactive leadership series is built to strengthen that partnership. Through engaging, hands-on sessions, participants will deepen their understanding of project budgeting, elevate both personal and team performance, and gain insight into customer expectations—all within a collaborative and growthminded learning environment.
