The University of Pittsburgh Allegheny Observatory project contained numerous challenges that were successfully met by the project team led by Massaro Construction. Work on this historic landmark included renovation of the rotating 1902 Thaw Dome that required field measuring, bending and soldering of each individual piece of zinc coated copper on site, replacement of the terracotta cornices with cast stone, replacement of deteriorated tongue and groove wood, modification of structural supports and replacement of the dome door — all with restricted access. The professionalism and attention to resolving day-to-day issues by the project team were crucial elements to the successful completion of the project.
