This amazing facility is a 442,000 square foot, 10-story tower, home to UPMC’s Vision and Rehabilitation Institutes. It features innovative spaces for patient care and professional collaboration. The hybrid structure, consisting of a cast in place concrete frame and significant amounts of structural steel, encountered numerous challenges during 46 months of construction, including material shortages and the building’s location. Mascaro Construction consistently identified creative solutions to keep the project on track.

The Erie Insurance Thomas B. Hagen Building sits at the hub of the campus, helping create an efficient and beautiful corporate complex. Achieving this goal had unique challenges, including a high-water table level at the site from an underground river, and Erie’s winter weather with high winds and heavy snow. PJ Dick worked closely with the design team and Erie Insurance to maintain the budget and schedule, and address safety concerns raised by the Covid-19 pandemic.

NLMK invested in a walking beam furnace for greater efficiency, product quality and competitiveness. STEVENS Engineers & Constructors, Inc. faced daunting challenges in construction throughout the project, including oozing water wherever crews dug a hole, and random delivery of parts and equipment, resulting in the need for temporary support of cable trays, piping and ductwork. Their reformulated schedule was aggressive, one others said couldn’t be done — but despite the odds, they did it.

Partnering with CMU’s Housing and Facility Management Services, Mosites Construction Company incorporated feedback from CMU students to drive the building’s vision and unique features. During a 10-month hiatus due to Covid 19, the partners worked through the Design Assist process to stay on budget and complete the project three months earlier than anticipated.

The design of this addition to University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg’s campus blends seamlessly with surrounding buildings with its crisp, clean look. Rycon Construction served as general contractor for the twostory, 32,085 square-foot facility which houses labs for nursing, health science, biology, microbiology, and chemistry — along with faculty offices and shared study space. The quality of workmanship showcases the superior skill of all the craftsman on the job and enhances the beauty of the design.

The project consisted of the design of a new generator system to replace the existing system, which was overloaded and obsolete. Challenges included extremely tight site restrictions, as well as the critical need to keep the existing emergency backup system completely operational throughout the duration of the project. Effective communication and collaboration among UPMC, architects, engineers, Mascaro Construction Company, LP, and subcontractor, Clista Electric, Inc, were key to overcoming unforeseen challenges throughout construction.

A. Martini & Co. accomplished a meticulous fit-out that spanned across six levels of the Union Trust Building. From the open dining room to the new bar and private dining room, the final design embraces Pittsburgh’s identity as the Steel City, incorporating multiple archways representing the City of Bridges, and ornamental metalwork found throughout the building. The sophisticated design, by Aria Group, is a celebration of the city’s spirit and the restaurant’s heritage.

The August Wilson House is the late, great playwright's childhood home. Located in Pittsburgh's Hill District, it serves as an art center in tribute to his enduring legacy. Designated a historical Pennsylvania site in 2007, the renovation required years of preconstruction planning and collaboration to restore the historic character of the home of one the nation’s most notable playwrights. A. Martini & Co. performed its role brilliantly through daunting construction challenges, and by enlisting the help of many local minority subcontractors.

While renovating the main entrance to the 128-year-old Carnegie Library in Oakland, Burchick Construction Company, Inc., discovered multiple structural and architectural challenges, including elements to be removed, salvaged, reworked, modified, and set back into place. The goal was to create an accessible entry to meet the needs of all library patrons while preserving the building’s iconic architecture. Improvements included a covered glass vestibule, an elevator-style lift and gently graded ramps to improve access..
