For some, MASS MoCA is a museum: a great place to see new art. For others, it’s a stage: an offbeat setting to hear new music, see theater, or to take in dinner and a movie. For us, and for our neighbors, MASS MoCA is an important and growing part of the social and economic fabric of our community.

Bluegrass and Roots Music

Since 1999, unemployment rates in our home city have fallen from 7 times to 1.4 times the state average. New businesses have moved downtown (taking storefront occupancy rates from below 25%, to more than 65%), and some of them have moved to the MASS MoCA campus. Three years before MASS MoCA opened there were 17 rooms for overnight stays in North Adams.

Today there are more than 10 times that many. Museum, tenant, and visitor spending add up: studies report the economic impact of MASS MoCA at $22 million per year, expanding to $25 – $28 million per year when we host multi-day music festivals in town.

Among our over 160,000 visitors per year, 30,000 guests make complimentary visits to Kidspace (admission to Kidspace is always free). 4,000 of those are visits from local students who study in our galleries, learn directly from exhibiting artists and enjoy lively school-time performances in our theaters, all as an integrated part of their curriculum.

Those students have been eager to show off MASS MoCA to their whole family. We’ve made that easier than ever to do, with free museum admission for our North Adams neighbors one day each month in the spring, fall, and winter. This season, we welcome 01247 residents with free admission “on the 4s” (the 4th day of each month), kicking off with free hot dogs and free gallery admission for all visitors (even you non-North Adams-folk) on October 4th, following the annual North Adams Fall Foliage Parade.

All that economic activity, education, and fun is, of course, all made possible by the art—more to the point the people who make it, and the people who come to enjoy it. I hope you’ll be one of those. We dig deep into Jim Shaw on October 8 (The Boston Globe called his Entertaining Doubts “the show of the summer”) and Anselm Kiefer on October 10, and hope you’ll come along. This brochure has a ton of great offerings on our stages, including indie-awesome from Brooklyn’s San Fermin, the mind-altering Dr. Dog, and my personal favorite this season, Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Fields.

Henry Butler One of the true masters of the great New Orleans piano tradition, Henry Butler is a keyboard magician. A rollicking blend of jazz, Caribbean, pop, blues, and R&B flows effortlessly from his hands. The Crescent City is also the birthplace of the cocktail, and this very special evening of music and culture includes classic NOLA drinks served up by our friends at Small Batch America—the first drink is included with admission.

Artist Talk with Jim Shaw Jim Shaw mines the essentials of American cultural detritus, from comic books, pulp novels, and album covers, to vintage advertisements, movie posters, and noise rock. Hear from the artist as he entertains his own doubts and creates new ones for you about church, state, and Superman.

Peace and Love and Rock and Roll ―

Dr. Dog

This documentary film examines Anselm Kiefer’s alchemical processes via a cinematic journey through his studio estate in the south of France. Art historian Michael Lewis excavates some of the obscure pieces of iconography from Kiefer’s Chlebnikov painting series, in a post-film talk and tour of our Kiefer gallery, a partnership with The Hall Art Foundation.

With humble origins as a lo-fi recording project from Philly, Dr. Dog has blossomed into today’s great ambassador of psychedelic music.

The band’s seven studio records careen between blissful ’60s pop and guitar-led indie rock, recalling The Zombies and Dinosaur Jr. They’re here fresh off the release of Live at the Flamingo Hotel: “19 swaggering, giddy takes of fan favorites,” (Rolling Stone).

Randy Kaplan The exceptional songwriter Randy Kaplan “doesn’t dumb it down for kids, he just expects them to come along for the ride…and they do,” (TimeOut New York). Wind-Up Fest The Williamstown Film Festival takes a dramatic turn to become Wind-Up Fest.

Focusing on documentary film, the re-tooled festival digs deep into creative nonfiction, including long-form journalism, podcasts, photography, and socially engaged, participatory art. After a screening of Very Semi-Serious about the unhinged minds of New Yorker cartoonists, BEK (Bruce Eric Kaplan) and Liana Finck join us for a wide-ranging show and tell.

Katie Workum, Kimberly Bartosik Two rising stars make their MASS MoCA debuts in this evening of dynamic and innovative contemporary dance. The “serious and ambitious” (NY Times) Katie Workum brings her new piece Black Lakes, a work full of improvisation, risk, and humor. The second half of the program features Bessie Award-winner Kimberly Bartosik’s Exteriority4, part of an evening-length project that constructs a landscape of power and desire to explore violence in American culture today.

Twin Peaks Mysteries Revealed ―

The Art of Deadpan ―

The Secret Life of Laura Palmer Commissioned by the David Lynch Foundation, this project is a Twin Peaks junky’s dream: a new edit mashing up the film—and the missing pieces— surrounding the mysterious last moments in the life of Laura Palmer. The live score is by A Place Both Wonderful and Strange, a dark dance-pop band equally inspired by Mr. Lynch and Janet Jackson. Dress as your favorite Twin Peaks character for extra credit.

Beth Stelling This rising standup star’s “razor sharp wit combined with her girl next door aesthetic make for a powerfully funny combination,” (Nerdist). Stelling’s track record—appearances on Conan, Jimmy Kimmel Live, @midnight, and Chelsea Lately; opening sets for Sarah Silverman and Kristen Schaal; and a Comedy Central special in the works—doesn’t lie: she’s the real deal.

Sundance Theatre Lab Sundance Institute’s renowned Theatre Program has developed Broadway and Off Broadway hits by the bushel, and its annual lab at MASS MoCA gathers top-tier dramatic artists and includes a work-in-progress performance.

The quality of the work, combined with the feeling of ink still wet, makes for a riveting night of theater-in-the-making.

This acclaimed songwriter, whose vast catalog includes the Magnetic Fields’ masterpiece 69 Love Songs and two dozen albums under four different band names besides, is responsible for some of the wittiest and most melodic songs in the indie music canon. Merritt’s been called “the Cole Porter of his generation,” (TimeOut New York) and he’s here for a rare stripped-down performance, accompanied only by Magnetic Fields bandmate and cellist Sam Davol.

Producer Dave Liang, filmmaker Sun Yunfan, and musician Gingger Shankar’s documentary project combines animation and archival photos with live music to tell the story of Gingger’s mother and grandmother, whose collaborations with Ravi Shankar and George Harrison helped bring Indian music to the West.

San Fermin is an orchestral rock band led by Brooklyn composersongwriter Ellis Ludwig-Leone. His enchanting songs are rendered by a veritable fleet of horns, strings, and singers, in what NPR calls a “feast of gorgeous chamber-pop.” Folk revivalist and MASS MoCA favorite Sam Amidon opens.
