THE ART OF LIVE AT MASSEY HALL Q&A with designer Jud Haynes Acclaimed St. John's- based graphic designer, promoter and musician Jud Haynes exemplifies the health of the art behind music, having spent nearly two decades crafting iconic artwork for equally iconic artists and events. When it came time to create Live at Massey Hall’s visual identity, we turned to the respected artist. We checked in with him to speak about his process and the state of the art form. What was the first concert poster you ever designed? The first poster I ever got paid to design was for a Newfoundland band called The Punters. I was pretty excited as it was going to be printed at 18 x 24 and in full colour. I remember a St. John’s band called Ditch, whose bass player would hand-draw all their posters. I heard that he often spent 8 hours illustrating one poster, which seemed like such a huge amount of work. Many posters I make now take upwards of 20 or 30 hours, so I’ve grown to learn that patience is one of the most important attributes to a great design.

What role do posters play in the era of the smartphone? Posters help us shape the character of our events. They all look the same on our phones, but when you can see the poster you get an idea of what kind of an experience you’re in for. Folks take posters down off the poles and take them home and buy and frame them. I think they’re just as important now as back in the Toulouse Lautrec days. Talk about the Live at Massey Hall poster design. I wanted to show as much of what makes Massey Hall special as possible, but to also keep the template simple enough that it wouldn’t take

away from the content. In other words, while I want the poster to be recognizable as Massey Hall, I need the bands to be the stars. I tried to drop in recognizable elements, the shell-like arch at the top of the poster is meant to represent the ceiling patterns in the theatre. Massey Hall is a legendary venue and I am very excited to be a part of the legacy, but wanted to be sure that what I created continued the story and fell in with the brand. There’s around 120 years of history to consider here, no pressure.

A Celebration of Steve Reich at 80
O
ver the course of a storied five-decade career, Steve Reich has made classical mainstream. Sure, his Grammy and Pulitzer Prize-winning music is regularly performed by ensembles around the world. But Reich’s sensibilities are more in tune with the streets than elites – he uses seemingly simple, easily perceptible processes to create increasingly complex compositions that hum, pulsate and pant in the clamorous rhythm of everyday urbanity. And just as his signature pieces are built upon repeated, overlapping motifs that gradually sync up, slip out and coalesce once again, they’ve also prefigured uncanny convergences with key pop-cultural movements over the years. They anticipated not just the rise of psychedelia and progressive rock, but also hip-hop, postpunk and modern electronica.

Reich turns 80 this year, and though he is as active as ever, he will allow himself a moment to celebrate his legacy. On April 14, Reich joins acclaimed Toronto contemporary music presenter Soundstreams, Massey Hall, and an exclusive gathering of some of Canada’s top musicians to celebrate the composer with a special retrospective. Each of the three signature, decidedly different compositions that will be performed represents a significant signpost in Reich’s prolific career. The self-explanatory Clapping Music (1972) is Reich at his most playful and participatory, a skinslapping pocket symphony that’s spawned DIY YouTube animations and an app. The mammoth 14-part Music for 18 Musicians (1976) was Reich’s first large ensemble piece, a trance-inducing masterwork of maximal minimalism that consolidated and expanded upon his prior experiments with looping, phasing and African rhythms. Tehillim (1981) marked a break from the elliptic quality of his work up to that point, foregrounding female voice and, through its melodic extrapolations of four Psalms, Reich’s Jewish roots.
But even at its most elaborate and conceptual, Reich’s music retains an uncommon accessibility. Its ultimate effect is not to overwhelm you with grandeur, but amaze you through intimacy – it’s music that invites you in for a close-up view of its machinations, and shows you how the most basic of ideas can yield extraordinary results. As Reich proved with Clapping Music, sometimes all the inspiration you need is right there in the palm of your hands. On the Cover Two artists we'd like you to meet
Donovan Woods Donovan Woods’ songbook is full of carefully-crafted country and folk-tinged songs of his own as well as hits co-written for some of the biggest names in country music. His fourth album, Hard Settle, Ain’t Troubled is his most confident, anticipated and acclaimed record to date. First moved as an 8-year-old at an Emmylou Harris set at Mariposa, it wasn’t long before Bob Dylan and Paul Simon became major influences. His dream of one day performing a solo headlining set at Massey Hall is rooted in his awe of Dylan’s solo Royal Albert Hall performances, and is surely not far off. His 2015 Harbourfront Centre Theatre show won over the capacity crowd, and he’ll open for Matt Andersen at Massey Hall on March 5 (see p 15) – and at 26 other cross-country stops. Though conversant in everything from chamber music to indie-folk, he says he listens to new-country radio “like all the time,” explaining that it’s important to know who is being played. “I also listen for my songs,” he adds with a smirk. But what he modestly fails to mention is that they

are often in heavy rotation, performed by the likes of Tim McGraw, Billy Currington, Charles Kelley (Lady Antebellum) and Alan Doyle. As a songwriter, Woods values the “satisfying finality in getting an idea that’s been bothering you pinned down in a song. It gives you the opportunity to move along. It’s a real gift.” He sympathizes with those who lack this outlet to deal with the wrangling that is inherent to the human condition, and that defines his music. “The message is the contradictions. Sad songs are happy, happy songs are sad. Everything is both, and never as sad or happy as you’d like them to be. My goal is not to be gritty like real life, but to be life, to communicate the actual wrangling that makes up life.” And that he accomplishes with a combination of self-deprecation, humour and confidence that define both his music and live-show banter, creating a one-of-a-kind performance experience.

Liz Loughrey Liz Loughrey shot to online fame with her personal takes on Top 40 pop songs, moving confidently beyond internet-phenom working with renowned Toronto producer/ musician Adrian X (The Weeknd, Drake). A classically-trained pop/soul vocalist, she’s influenced by equal parts Etta James and Amy Winehouse and her voice belies the old-soul’s young age. We are excited to present her at the Rivoli on April 7. What is the first album you bought? Britney Spears, …Baby One More Time. Then Thriller. What artist made you want to do what you do? Sade. She’s got such integrity as an artist, and as a woman, and embodies the qualities I aspire to have.

What do you hope people take away from your music? I hope that people feel like they’re a part of something. That the music uplifts them, and inspires them. Music has the power to unite people. Adrian X calls it ‘the sonic hug’. I want people to feel that embrace. What’s the best thing about doing what you do? That if this is my life, I’ll feel like I’ve never worked a day. It’s what I believe I was put on the planet to do. What do people most frequently misunderstand about what you do? I think that people see a finished product and don’t fully understand how much has gone into getting there. The theme of this issue is renewal. How do you keep things fresh? With songwriting, I have to take initiative to keep things fresh. To listen
to people I’ve never heard before, and speak to people with different perspectives. What’s ahead for you this year? We’re driving to LA to perform and record. But the key is to experience physically moving from point A to point B, to appreciate the destination even more, and to inspire the recording, and the performances. So it’s more of a trip than a tour.

Breaking with tradition, she was taught by both her father, the renowned Ustad Ghulam Haider, and by master Ustad Salaamat Ali Khan, and performs interpretations of Sufi poetry solo and accompanied by harmonium and percussion. The blues, he says, continues to be such an affecting form of musical storytelling because of “the way an artist writes (or interprets) what has gone before.” That performers must “do it so that the audience can really see, and hear, that it’s real – that it means something,” he says, "It is the best thing about any story telling." The blues is known for its realness, and as the soundtrack to sadness, heartbreak and loss. But it’s also, a soundtrack that moves you. When someone says they’ve got the blues, a feeling is evoked. It’s not the only genre that expresses intense emotion but it is one whose very core identifies emotion, and tells a specific story, minute details and all—and often with an extended solo that amplifies that emotion. But the results are often uplifting and empowering. Indeed, the genre’s name belies its celebratory nature. It’s in that spirit that we look deeper into the blues’ special place in the history of the Hall. Flohil recounts the most memorable show he ever promoted: B.B. King’s 1968 Massey Hall debut, the bluesman’s second Canadian date. “I paid [him] $2000 and tickets were $4.50, $3.50 and $2.50 - as a promoter I think I made $700” Flohil recalls. “The audience,” he says with a confident and nodding grin in a long slow stride as though watching it back in his mind, “loved it.”
Talkin’ Blues Long-time Toronto promoter and music aficionado Richard Flohil believes that the blues’ reputation as a simple art form is, in fact, a testament to its power. We feature Flohil, among others, in the new Soundboard podcast, which takes a closer look at the blues: the history and evolution of the music, and its influence on the artists performing at Massey Hall over the coming months. Flohil, who has spent several decades working on and watching some of the most memorable blues concerts in recent history, has collected more than his share of stories – many of which will appear in a forthcoming book and several of them can be heard on the podcast.

Though he looks back at a career full of moments with the giants, he speaks excitedly about discovering the next generation of blues musicians. “If you have open ears and a big heart, you’ll go ‘whoa! What’s that?!” Which is just what he did the first time he saw Matt Andersen. Feeling immediately that the New Brunswicker was destined for Massey Hall, he said: "It was like getting hit on the head with a rock,” he says. “Like, ‘Oh f--k, it’s gravity!’”

The Power of Podcasts Celebrating a welcome addition to the media landscape Though we are constantly told that micro-blogging and information tidbits are perfectly designed for our oversaturated brains, the success and popularity of long-form podcasts proves we’re as hungry as ever for stimulating stories and conversations. The relatively unmediated, passion-not-profit-driven scope of this medium is resonating among listeners who recognize that a whole swath of talent and knowledge exists outside of the confines of conventional media structures. As a medium, podcasts are a natural outgrowth of the wildness and empowering aspects of the internet. We’ve discovered insightful journalists via writing on their own blogs, visionary filmmakers who distribute their work on YouTube, and bands who upload tracks on SoundCloud. Meanwhile, podcasting quietly began its ascent as a vital source of unfettered content of a different kind. There’s a virulent strain of anti-intellectualism in mainstream media that manifests itself in clickbait headlines, eye-candy listicles, and an emphasis on things they think we want because they assume we’re kind of dumb. And yet, there’s hope when long-form podcasts including Serial and WTF with Marc Maron, and radio-shows-cum-podcasts like the CBC’s recently-departed WireTap, and the show that arguably started it all, This American Life, transcend their intended audience.

This special live taping features indepth conversations with journalist and CBC host Piya Chattopadhyay, and Nathan Lawr, the outspoken leader of indie-Afrobeat band, MINOTAURS. The band will also perform a full set to celebrate the release of their third album, Weird Waves.

The fact that more people are spending time with hour-long, conversation-based or documentary-structured podcasts is heartening and worth celebrating. That such programming is inspiring further discussion and action among fellow listeners is an incredible form of community-building. We develop deep emotional bonds with hosts, thanks to the rare intimacy of the medium, and the growing interest seems to suggest that audiences are seeking, and finding, intellectual nourishment and connections there. Writer, editor, musician and radio personality Vish Khanna (pictured above) hosts Kreative Kontrol, an interview/documentary podcast featuring conversations with an international collection of cultural creators and contributors. Massey Hall Revitalization Massey Hall, Canada’s only continuously-operating concert hall of its vintage, is more than just a legendary venue. As per Hart Massey’s original vision for the Hall he gifted to Toronto in 1894, it’s an essential engine of cultural vitality for our Music City. All Torontonians have a stake in Massey Hall because it’s where we all come together.
