Who We Are The Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall is a charitable, not-for-profit organization, managed by a professional team with a volunteer Board of Governors. We:

1 PROVIDE a world-renowned environment to showcase international arts and a public space for the cultural communities of the Greater Toronto Area.

2 SUPPORT the development of Canadian talent.

3 INCREASE & ENHANCE our worldwide profile as a leader in the arts community through our professionalism and programming.

We provide access to meaningful music experiences in our world-class concert halls and beyond, by investing in artists, audiences, education, and technology to respect the diversity of the communities we serve. We aim to generate excitement around performance and music, building on the unique strengths of both Halls.

Massey Hall & Roy Thomson Hall acknowledge that the land on which these buildings now stand are the treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. We also acknowledge the Anishinaabe, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples who also share these lands.

Deane Cameron C.M. 1953 - 2019

n May 16, 2019, the world lost one of its greatest music champions. Deane Cameron was our President & CEO, a leader who brought a rare level of humanity and humility to the role, and whose tireless drive and passion for the Massey Hall Revitalization inspired us all. Deane came to the halls having already been invested into the Order of Canada for his decades of contributions to Canadian culture. Starting in the warehouse at EMI Music Canada in 1977, he worked his way to the top, becoming President in 1988 where he remained at the helm until 2012.

brightest in his selfless commitment to making the world a better place through music, prioritizing our Education & Outreach programming and playing foundational roles in establishing the Unison Benevolent Fund to assist members of the music community in times of crisis, and MusiCounts’ Band Aid program delivering musical instruments to classrooms across the country.

We lost a leader and a champion, but more than anything, we lost a friend. We have been forever changed for the better having had Deane as a part of our lives, and we miss him every day.

During those years he helped drive the successful careers of countless artists including many friends of the halls, from Serena Ryder to his lifelong friend Tom Cochrane. Iconic Indigenous artists such as Buffy Sainte-Marie and Susan Aglukark formed unbreakable bonds with Deane as he committed himself to giving their art a platform so it could be heard around the world. Deane was equally committed to discovering and supporting emerging artists and took considerable pride in our Artist Development Program, as engaged in the details of the music and as invested in the artists as if he were still a young A&R rep at the record label in the 1980s. Deane’s passion, values, and strength of character are reflected in the work we continue to do, and we look forward to honouring his memory for years to come.

As we reflect on an emotional and challenging year, we are foremost grateful for our management and staff who rallied to continue delivering excellence in programming and great care for our patrons while grieving.

We are grateful too for the talent and dedication of the Massey Hall Revitalization team who continue to champion the restoration of our beloved hall. The generosity of donors, the vision of our partners, and the trust of our funders empowers this project and our work. The artists who fill our venues with the magic of music and the fans who show up to cheer them remind us every day of the important and unifying force of music and the special role of our Corporation in nurturing and promoting Canadian music.

THE YEAR AT

Roy Thomson Hall

Section Title

t was an exciting year of growth and expansion at Roy Thomson Hall with hundreds of diverse events coming through our doors. With Massey Hall closed, we welcomed annual concerts and events such as Buddy Guy, Dream Serenade, Tafelmusik’s Sing Along Messiah, St. Michael’s Choir School, an expanded season of Classic Albums Live and more under the glass canopy of Roy Thomson Hall.

We introduced a new series, Orchestrated, featuring some of Canada’s best contemporary artists backed by a live orchestra. For the launch of the series, Toronto’s very own Whitehorse made their Roy Thomson Hall debut, performing epic arrangements of their music backed by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

TIFF Gala screenings are nothing new to the Hall, though nevertheless exhilarating to see each September. This year we were particularly thrilled to host the world’s finest and showcase the best Roy Thomson Hall has to offer through our investment in new film screening infrastructure, including the acquisition of new screen, sound, and lighting technology, cementing our status as a world destination for events of all shapes and sizes.

assey Hall Forever, the rallying cry of our fundraising campaign in support of the Massey Hall Revitalization, continues to build momentum and garner enthusiastic support from donors across private and public sectors.

This past year featured momentous occasions and celebrations. In February 2019, we proudly announced our Campaign Cabinet, a passionate group of individuals who are leading the Massey Hall Forever Campaign. Alongside our donors, we revealed a restored stained glass window for a special gathering at Stephen Bulger Gallery, and in June, The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell,

Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, hosted an event to celebrate Massey Hall’s 125th anniversary with an intimate performance by iskwē.

Joining the over 1,200 gifts from community donors, are leadership gifts from philanthropists who are honouring some of Massey Hall’s most historic artists in the restored auditorium when it reopens.

We are grateful for a gift from John and LIZ Tory and Family to name the restored collection of composer stained glass windows in honour of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The TSO holds a special place in the history of the Corporation, performing at Massey Hall from 1923-1982 before moving to Roy Thomson Hall where they now share their artistic vibrancy. Mrs. Tory joined the TSO Junior Women’s Committee in 1955 when it was first formed, and has been a friend of the Symphony and our Halls for many years.

Frances and Tim Price’s gift reflects their love of choral music and the arts. When reopened, the main auditorium balcony will be named in honour of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, a fitting tribute to one of Canada’s oldest choral ensembles who performed its first concert at Massey Hall in 1895, part of the inaugural season.

Massey Hall Revitalization

he Massey Hall Revitalization Project saw significant progress made on many fronts. From heritage restoration of the 1894 building to the construction of the new addition to the south and the myriad of connections between the two, Massey Hall's evolution into a fully operational music centre continued as we work to bring the hallowed Hall into the 21st century, honouring its history, preserving its legacy, and forever focused on delivering the best in live entertainment for both artists and fans.

Many advancements were made following the installation of a tower crane in the fall of 2018 to facilitate construction, largely unseen to those who may pass by the Hall. New concrete poured on the main floor in the auditorium was completed in preparation for the new state-of-the-art retractable seating system, which will allow us to deliver an improved seated concert experience.

This improvement will respect the traditional feel of the auditorium while accommodating general admission floor space and opening up Massey Hall to new categories of artists and events.

entirely new space complete with a permanent stage capable of hosting club-size shows, private events, and artist showcases, all while providing an improved patron experience to fans attending main auditorium events.

Construction of the new addition to the south continued throughout the fiscal year, with beams installed in the heritage building to support the installation of the new Passerelles that will take patrons from the auditorium to wholly new amenities in the south addition including expanded patron hospitality and comfort spaces.

Looking skyward in the main auditorium, scaffolding was raised up to Massey Hall’s renowned Moorish arches, where restoration of all heritage plaster elements was undertaken by skilled specialists working to restore the original character and integrity of this architectural treasure. This includes removing the familiar wire mesh covering that had been in place for safety reasons since 1968. Fans entering the auditorium from any angle will finally get a glimpse of what the Hall must have looked like a generation ago, newly restored to last another 125 years.

Working offsite, another group of skilled artisans are nearing completion on the restoration of 100 stained glass windows that were carefully removed from the hall in 2017. Restored windows at the attic level are ready to be set back in place, and the rest will come back to Massey Hall in 2020.

Education & Outreach With expansion on our minds throughout the organization, our Education & Outreach initiatives enjoyed an exceptional year, spreading out across the city to serve a diverse community of music fans of all ages, providing accessible and interactive artistic experiences that inspire and engage through creativity, collaboration, and curiosity.

Share the Music continues to connect students to music through informative workshops and high-calibre performances.

With support from our partners at Sun Life, we connected over 2,000 students to world-class artists and interactive events throughout the year.

In partnership with the TSO, students attended a TSO rehearsal, spoke with a musician, and participated in a Garage Band workshop, creating music with found sounds from throughout the Hall.

The Lullaby Project “Lullaby for Emilia” was featured in Carnegie Hall’s annual lullaby celebration concert, which has now received over 9,000 streams from Carnegie’s Facebook page.

ur participation in the worldwide Lullaby Project continues to grow with 11 new lullabies created this season by pairing young women from Jessie’s, The June Callwood Centre for Young Women, with accomplished songwriters including Tom Meikle (Mappe Of), Liz Lokre, and Tanika Charles, among many others.

We piloted a new format of National Geographic Live!

Student Matinees featuring a full day enrichment experience for smaller groups of student leaders in grades 6, 7, and 8. Fifty students each attended two presentations, visited Ripley’s Aquarium to learn about underwater environments, and participated in a leadership workshop led by facilitators from Me to We. Call & Response saw 46 students earn over 1,000 cumulative volunteer service hours through workshops and events, and for the first time, graduates from Call & Response formed our inaugural youth council, which they named the “Youth Musician Commission.” This self-governed group of 10 began meeting on a weekly basis to form the foundation of this new program, establishing roles and planning future events for their peers for years to come.

At the heart of many Education & Outreach initiatives is the connection we create between our community and artists.

The Good Lovelies wrote songs with students from two schools in December culminating in an exclusive pre-show soundcheck ahead of the trio's holiday concert at the Danforth Music Hall.

LETS (Learn English Through Song) LETS found a new home at Newcomer Women’s Centre at Pape and Danforth, where we offered 36 hours of 13 English language instruction through song to 47 women ages 20 through 75 (the program now continues there).

Artist Development Our Artist Development initiatives continue to create opportunities and provide support for many talented musicians at various stages of their career, progressing from small venues to larger stages, including premieres at our very own Roy Thomson Hall.

Peter showcased new music as a special guest at our presentation of Jenn Grant at the Danforth Music Hall, as well as an industry and radio programmer showcase at the Dakota Tavern.
