A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Deane Cameron C.M., President & CEO

Welcome to the latest issue of Soundboard Magazine, your guide to all that’s coming up in the world of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall. We’ve made great strides in revitalizing Massey Hall, making the first significant upgrades to the Hall in over 80 years. Already the first phase of this massive undertaking is underway and we are excited about future phases that will improve and enhance – but not change – the live experience for our audiences. We’ve also upgraded the sound systems of both Halls, helping the amazing talent showcased there sound even better. Revitalization has naturally focused our gaze on the future, but we’ve also been looking back, to Hart Massey’s original vision for the Hall (see page 22). We’re proud of the fact that the foundation upon which the Hall was built has directly inspired the organization we’ve become. Our commitment to showcasing the diversity, excellence and potential of our Music City – exemplified by the three artists you see on the cover – is only the most recent manifestation of that founding vision. It’s written across the pages of this issue, which once again contain an expanded amount and range of programming. We hope you’ll join us in experiencing as much of it as possible, in our own Halls and at sites throughout Toronto. Summertime, after all, is all about getting out there.

Deane Cameron C.M. President & CEO

T

he third season of Live at Massey Hall continues with two boundary-bursting artists whose acclaimed and unique music inspired and paved the way for countless others – and helped put Toronto on the international music map. Both are well-known for their high-energy, provocative and exploratory live performances that challenge audiences as much as entertain.

The Hidden Cameras (see Q&A, this page) appear in advance of the release of their seventh album, Home on Native Land. Musician-producer-filmmaker-author-performance-artist Peaches, meanwhile, released her 5th album Rub in 2015 and celebrates her Polaris Heritage Prize for best album of the 2000s, Teaches of Peaches, as voted by the public.

PEACHES THE HIDDEN CAMERAS Thu Aug 4 • 8 PM

JOEL GIBB The man behind The Hidden Cameras Joel Gibb, on the cover, founded the art-rockers The Hidden Cameras in 2001. The band helped kick-start Toronto's indie renaissance and opened up a previously non-existent space on Toronto’s live landscape for expressing alternative religious, sexual, musical and political ideas. An influential sumof-its-parts membership has included Gentleman Reg, Laura Barrett, Owen Pallett among many others – several of which appear on a soon-to-be-released album ten years in the making. In our Q&A, Gibb takes us behind the Cameras, as it were. Q

What was your first concert?

A Raffi. But Exposé at the old Ontario Place Forum felt like my first real concert. The Sugarcubes at the Concert Hall in 1992 was my first general-admission concert. Q

What are your musical influences?

A They are many. Like Nina Simone, the way she creates beauty from pain. Q What do you hope people take away from your music? A All gods are false except the mysterious God of the Self. Q What’s the best thing about doing what you do? A Connecting to other musicians and the audience.

CLASSICAL

BERLINER PHILHARMONIKER Sir Simon Rattle, Chief Conductor

Photo: Monika Rittershaus

F

ounded in 1882, the Berliner Philharmoniker has long been recognized as one of the greatest orchestras in the world. And while they are one of the ultimate practitioners of a long tradition, they are also an organization with a firm footing in the 21st century, thanks, in part, to Sir Simon Rattle’s tenure as Artistic Director. Brought on board in 2002, Rattle had conducted the Philharmoniker 58 times since his 1987 debut with the orchestra. Favouring an even more transparent orchestra sound, he confronts the musicians with conductors who are considered specialists in historical performance practice, and focuses on the works of Viennese classicism as well as contemporary composers – including Hans Werner Henze, Thomas Adès, Jörg Widmann, Sofia Gubaidulina and Heiner Goebbels.

10

soundboard issue No. 4

Dedicated to finding new ways to get music into the hearts and ears of the general public, Rattle established the Berlin Philharmonic’s Education Programme. The Philharmoniker entered cyberspace in an unprecedented way in 2009, with the Digital Concert Hall. While the streaming service brings an intimate experience of the Philharmoniker online, it is live where the Philharmoniker thrives, and the unique opportunity to catch the orchestra in person is not to be missed. With Rattle at the helm, as John Terauds, writing for Soundboard's second issue put it, audiences witness “a full-body experience” of music rendered “in the sonic equivalent of Technicolor.” Rattle's appearances in Toronto is the Philharmoniker’s only Canadian stop on a tour of just seven North American cities on Rattle’s farewell series of performances with the orchestra before his tenure ends in 2018.

Founded in 1881, the BSO has been invigorated by Nelsons’ tenure, which was just extended to 2022. A live-concert recording contract with the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label and a series of transatlantic collaborations with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra – of which he officially becomes music director in 2017 – are two of his celebrated initiatives. The orchestra will be joined by Grammy winning American pianist Emanual Ax.

T

he Beatles changed the world in countless ways, but they also dramatically changed Toronto over three consecutive years of performances (1964 to 1966) at Maple Leaf Gardens. Almost overnight, the city was hit with a cultural shift of seismic proportions: Boys grew Beatle-bangs, girls pinned photos of John, Paul, George and Ringo on their walls and parents worried about the sanity of their teenaged children. Canada’s folk darlings Ian & Sylvia had ruled up to that point, but as the male half of that duo, Ian Tyson, remembers, “the minute the Beatles arrived, it was over – well and truly over.” The folk boom slowed, as every kid on the block rushed to form rock bands.

and the entirely Toronto-bred Liverpool Set. By 1966, there were over 1,600 bands registered with the musicians’ union – and many more that remained unregistered. Beatlemania-like hysteria wasn’t reserved for visitors. When Toronto’s Five Rogues, the Spasstiks and the Paupers opened shows for Herman’s Hermits, the Animals and the Lovin’ Spoonful, they found themselves greeted by the same frenzy as the headliners. The British Invasion’s influence reached its zenith on September 24, 1966, a month after the Beatles’ last appearance. 16,000 screaming fans – more than came out to see the Dave Clark Five and the Rolling Stones – packed Maple Leaf Gardens for the ‘The Toronto Sound,’ a 14-hour showcase of 14 local bands including the Tripp, the Big Town Boys, the Ugly Ducklings and Luke & the Apostles.

Toronto’s music scene flourished. In addition to the folk that continued to be showcased there, Yorkville’s coffeehouses became home to a steady stream of local groups, some of which faked Beatle accents, adopted English-sounding names, or, in one case, billed themselves as “Direct from England.” The bars of the Yonge Street Strip also fell under the Mersey Beat’s spell. Aside from imported tribute bands like the American Beetles and the Female Beatles, Yonge Street Clubs distinctly Beatle-ish sounds were being made by the Last Words, Jack London & the Sparrows

ART AND SOCIAL JUSTICE We look to artists to reflect our lives, but how often do we look to them to shape our future? This fall, the AGO and Massey Hall will address that question as they launch Creative Minds, a new series of artist-driven dialogues presented in partnership with The Banff Centre and CBC. Hosted at Toronto’s iconic Massey Hall, Creative Minds brings together leading artists and musicians for an evening of energetic conversation about the most urgent social concerns of our time. Join Deepa Mehta, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Rebecca Belmore for the explosive series launch, focused on Art and Social Justice. As movements to combat systemic racism and discrimination gain momentum in Canada and around the world, hear the artists discuss how to spark action and provoke change.

ON THE COVER

BOOGAT ARTISTS Boogat’s music, fusing Latin, rap, worldbeat, tropical bass and more, is about breaking through boundaries, which makes sense, given his thoughts on genres: “There are only two kinds of music: Good music, and bad music,” he says. Splitting his time between Montreal and Mexico City, he also is eager to see beyond geographical boundaries. His celebrated work with artists from turntablist Kid Koala to Afro-futuristic electro-beat artist Pierre Kwenders and pop-star Marie-Mai, and a JUNO Award for his 2015 album, Neo-Reconquista, shows that it’s a worldview that’s clearly catching on.

we’d like you to meet.

s we expect you’ve noticed, the covers of Soundboard represent a great opportunity for us to highlight some of the amazing performers featured in our programming, and this issue’s talented trio represents an amazing soundtrack to our summer – and, we hope, yours too. Allow us to introduce you to two of the artists on the cover (see page 8 to meet Joel Gibb).

LIDO PIMIENTA You may remember Lido Pimienta from our Hall Party: Carnival back in February. Indeed, it’s thanks to the Carnival of her hometown, Baranquilla, that she became a singer: The power of the cantaoras (singers), convinced her that she was meant to follow in their footsteps. A journey through punk, jazz and more has landed her not far from those roots: Her electro-pop is rooted in the kind of singing – spiritual, traditional and ancient – that inspires audiences: “I want to open doors to new, underrepresented worlds.” Lido Pimienta performs at Yonge-Dundas Square on Mon Sep 5 as part of Lunchtime Live!

MASSEY HALL REVITALIZATION 1

hen Hart Massey gifted Massey Hall to the city in 1894, he anticipated Toronto’s Music City worthiness by over 120 years. The Hall was to be a place that promoted among Torontonians “an interest in musical, educational, and industrial advancement of the people, the cultivation of good citizenship and patriotism, the promotion of philanthropy,” with room for “the largest number of people” to attend “at a minimum cost of admission.” That vision remains, and guides our organization's work today.

W

FROM THE ARCHIVE As we plan the Hall’s future, we’ve been spending time thinking about, and delving into, its past. We’re discovering actual pieces of the Hall’s history, like the ones you see here, which make real our vision in a holdit-in-your-hand (carefully!) kind of way. it all brings home the idea that we're a part of a tradition, engaged in more than just presenting events. 4

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Share The Music

Roy Thomson Hall’s Free Noon Hour Choir & Organ Concerts Roy Thomson Hall celebrates our 20th season of free noon-hour concerts with four performances in our 20162017 season, continuing our showcase of the country’s most celebrated choral ensembles and acclaimed organists. The series, which highlights the magnificent Gabriel Kney pipe organ, one of the largest mechanical-action instruments in the country, is made possible by the generous support of Edwards Charitable Foundation.

Kyle Brenders leads a Clapping Music workshop in the Massey Hall balcony.

S

hare the Music, our arts and education outreach program, has been opening the doors to music for students (ages 8 to 18) across the city since 1999. The program provides tickets – over 20,000 since we began – to concerts at Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall for students who would otherwise be unable to afford or attend such performances on their own. But just as important are the related and interactive pre-concert events led by prominent educator-performers from across Toronto’s vibrant music scene that also help to create a lifelong interest in live performance. In advance of the performance by composer Steve Reich in celebration of his 80th birthday in April, Kyle Brenders, bandleader of the Massey Hall Band, led a Share the Music workshop on Reich’s music with the help of two members of the acclaimed TorQ Percussion Quartet. The session culminated

in a rousing rendition, by the more than 200 students in attendance, of Reich’s Clapping Music. Words like “mesmerized” and “awesome” were overheard to describe the concert and workshop experienced by the students that evening. We are grateful for the long-term support and leadership of Sun Life Financial, along with a host of corporate, foundation and individual donors. We hope you will join us in helping to bring more children and youth to Share the Music.
