Orthodontic Treatments
First, let’s understand what is Orthodontics treatments. It is a branch of dentistry that deals with the treatment of wrongly placed teeth and jaws resulting in an improper bite. Hence
Orthodontic treatment includes all those procedures that improve the positioning of misaligned teeth to give a proper bite and a beautiful smile.
Overlapped, crowded or misaligned teeth cause a lot of harm to the nearby teeth. There are increased chances of tooth decay, cavities, and gum diseases. The misplaced teeth exert pressure on the jaws & chewing muscles leading to headaches, neck pain, and shoulder & back pain. Besides, it is impossible to keep these teeth clean which further deteriorates oral hygiene. In such cases, treatments are done by dental experts called Orthodontists. They have received special training in this field for two or more years after completing their regular dentistry course.
Signs that show you need to see an Orthodontist
If you are facing any problem with your bite, you need to consult a dental expert or an orthodontist, who will take details of your overall health, your oral health, different types of mouth X-rays, photographs, plaster models of teeth, and then decide if you need orthodontic treatment or not. If yes, then and of what type?
If your dentist says you are facing any of these problems, you should immediately see an Orthodontist:
● Underbite: The lower teeth are away from each other & leaning forward while the upper teeth are away from each other leaning backward. This gives the bulldog-like appearance.
● Overbite: In this case, the upper front teeth stand far away from each other unable to join the lower teeth and creating an overbite.
● Crossbite: During the crossbite, the upper teeth do not meet the lower teeth which is essential for normal bite function.
● Gaps in Teeth: Many kids have space or gaps between teeth, sometimes this may also happen due to a missing tooth.
● Crowded Teeth: If the dental ridge has more teeth than its capacity to hold, then it can lead to crowded or overlapped teeth which cause damage to each other.
The treatment procedures involve placing temporary or fixed devices that correct the position of teeth, treat malocclusions (bad bites), retrain muscles & exert pressure on jaws in the right direction.
