Les Misérables, one of the most successful musicals in history, has reached over 65 million people. Unwrapping why this show commands such devotion isn’t hard. Soaring melodies and comedic ditties are peppered with sly turns of phrase; life or death decisions are made among the first blush of young love. Passion abounds.

And while the show is famous for its epic nature, intimate themes like redemption, family and faith thread through the narrative – the audience experience in our own intimate theatre will be immediate and unforgettable.

Fully Committed, our second show, will play like the fastest show in the West, and we welcome back director Jay Sandrich, who along with Matt Bailey will bring forty characters to life in less than 70 minutes. Matt is also “fully committed” to trying a few things; he also appears as Enjolras in Les Misérables.

Our third show of the season is the musical You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. It is a misconception that Peanuts, the cartoon upon which the show is based, is just for kids. Charles Schulz, who for over four decades gave voice to adult issues through the mouths of babes, astonished adult readers on a daily basis with his subversive commentary.

Topics like depression, women’s lib, existentialism and the Vietnam War were candidly addressed in his famously spare four-panel strip. Yet the musical lands for all ages, with catchy tunes that ultimately carry a message of the search for love and happiness. In another display of virtuosity, our “Charlie Brown” also plays Marius in Les Misérables.

By age 4, low-income children can be 18 months behind their peers in cognitive and social skills with only ½ to ¼ the vocabulary. Many never catch up. Here in our valley community, 1 in 3 children are not prepared for kindergarten.

Our valley can do better. ACF’S Cradle to Career Initiative builds youth success from Aspen to Parachute, serving the needs of over 22,000 children aged 0 -18 by bringing nonprofits, schools, business, government and philanthropy together to spur regional collaborative action that will ensure that children are ready for kindergarten and graduate from high school ready for college or career.

As the backbone organization for the Cradle to Career Initiative, ACF is guiding the vision and strategy, supporting aligned activities, building public will and mobilizing funding to advance the work of the Initiative. We have established a Cradle to Career Fund to support our efforts and help initiate and expand programs and services throughout our region.
