n behalf of the entire Masonic Fraternity, our Michigan Masonic Home, Michigan Masonic Charitable Foundation, their boards, and all our employees, I want to take this moment to wish you a very happy holiday season!

We all have so much to be grateful for. For some, it may be that we’ve made it through the worst of the pandemic, or it may be that all of us are still together. For others, it may be that memories of those that are not with us now bring us memories of warmth and laughter. Whatever the situation, we can still be grateful for what we do have: each other, a loving God that cares about us, and a fraternal family that provides support for each of us.

This holiday season, regardless of our faith, let us recommit ourselves to the great truth of our fraternity – that the fraternal love found within our gentle craft is needed today more than ever. That this fraternity, which brings together men who might otherwise have remained at a perpetual distance, are now brethren.

Brothers that have learned to leave outside the door those things that divide them, and bring into the lodge those things which all good men can agree upon.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Joyous Kwanzaa – wherever you are, whatever your faith – we wish you the very best of the season.

Holidays

mmediately following Thanksgiving, decorations magically appear at the Michigan Masonic Home. (It’s really thanks to the hard work of our Life Enrichment staff and a group of special volunteers).

From the sparkling drive up the boulevard, through the Grand Living Room with its twin angelic trees and beautifully garlanded fireplaces, to the festively decorated OES Dining Room, and continuing throughout the entire Home, every space seems to celebrate the season! With its numerous uniquely ornamented trees, there truly is no place like the Michigan Masonic Home during the holidays.

Along with the decorations, the residents seem to brighten with anticipation of the holidays. Most all have a story to tell about their favorite family traditions. This season we want to share some of those treasured memories, starting with four of our current residents.

Yvonne Grover and her husband, Rodney, a member

of Alma Lodge #244, moved to Masonic Pathways during the Christmas season in 2017. They had lived in Northville until 1990, when they relocated to Alma to be near Rodney’s parents.

His parents eventually moved to Pathways, which makes Yvonne and Rodney second generation residents of the home.

While raising two daughters and a son, Yvonne became known as one of the area’s most talented seamstresses. Along with her expertise in the making of Highland Dance costumes, Yvonne has dressed many American Girl dolls. Those outfits have appeared under Christmas trees for more than one generation of delighted little girls.

One of her most memorable Christmas events is the year they went to her in-laws for a celebration and, upon returning, discovered that all the needles had fallen from their Christmas tree. It is now referred to as the year of Snoopy’s Christmas tree.

John Anderson (Andy) Jackson and his wife, Donna

Lee, moved to Masonic Pathways in June of 2015. A member of Royal Oak #464, Andy is also affiliated with seven other Masonic bodies.

Both his parents and his wife’s parents were also residents of Masonic Pathways. Having joined DeMolay at age fourteen, Andy credits his membership with them as key in his ability to assimilate into “normal” society, despite being physically challenged. He continues to enjoy the lifelong friendships he made in DeMolay.

Outside every room in the Home, residents have a shadow box where they can display a few “of their favorite things.” In Andy’s you’ll find three unique Highland Cattle figurines. He says they are the least expensive Christmas gift he ever gave his wife, and her favorite. He bought them to remind her of trips she made to Scotland, where she was convinced she saw the same Highland cattle every visit.

Mary Parcell

along with her husband, Don, moved to the Michigan Masonic Home in June of 2015. Masonry was a way of life in Mary’s family, as her grandfather and father were both Masons. Her father was instrumental in bringing Mary’s husband, two brothers, and two sons into the Fraternity. Mary is a life member of the OES Grand Chapter and served as Matron for the Saginaw Chapter three times.

Her most memorable Christmas was the year her brother, Richard Ennis, joined the Army and was unable to come home. She said every gift was a disappointment, until her brother surprised the family by walking in the door. A favorite family Christmas treat was her mother’s fruitcake, which she later learned to make herself. According to Mary, the secret is dusting the pan with cornmeal!

Helen Townsend and her husband, Theodore, joined the

Masonic Pathways family in the fall of 2014. Born in Hamilton Township near Ashley, Helen is a lifelong member of Gratiot County.

She still owns and continues to visit family in the home where she raised five children; two girls and three boys. The address is located on North Gratiot County Line Road, but the UPS drivers could never quite find it without calling for directions.

Christmas at the Michigan Masonic Home is particularly special to Helen, as the Townsend family operated a floral and greenhouse business that for years decorated the Home. Her mother-in-law, Frances, planned for it all year long and the family delivered and decorated what was always the area’s tallest indoor tree, along with other live greenery, garland, and flowers. Helen’s children would visit and thought it looked just like a fairyland.

he winter season brings a great amount of joy and excitement. It is a time to reflect on what is important, such as our family and friends, celebrating life, and being grateful for the blessings in our lives. With the change in weather and preparation for the holidays, there are plenty of distractions that keep us from focusing on our health and wellbeing. The shorter days and colder weather can deter you from staying active, which can impact our overall health. Stress can be another factor, as it can lower the immune system; not to mention the delicious holiday snacks that can challenge our waistlines! However, with some intentional actions, you can navigate the season successfully, taking care of yourself and those around you. Here are a few suggestions to help you navigate this season.

Get Outdoors - Embrace those cold temperatures

and get moving outdoors! Exposure to natural sunlight can increase the body’s serotonin levels to lift your mood and ward off depression. Taking time for just a fifteen minute walk every day can lead to significant health benefits, such as lowering blood pressure and reducing risk of type 2 diabetes.

Please use caution when outdoors. Know your limits and take proper breaks, especially if you are shoveling snow and clearing sidewalks. Ask for help if you need it. If you are looking for assistance, remember our Masonic family is here to help. Contact your Masonic resource center, Live Better At Home, who will be happy to help you coordinate plowing services.

When outdoors, remember to dress smart! Dress in layers for your protection. Rubber slip resistant shoes and boots are important to reduce the risk for falling.

Falls during this season are one of the most frequent cause of injuries for seniors. One suggestion to reduce the risk is to walk like a penguin. It may sound silly, however, preventing injury is no laughing matter.

When walking on slippery surfaces, it is best to waddle, taking shorter shuffling steps with your toes pointed outward, keeping your center of gravity over your front leg.

Eat Healthy - 'Tis the

season for festivity and food!

Temptations are everywhere during the holidays, so it is important to holiday-proof your plans. Remember to make healthy choices by eating with moderation and balance. Choose first to fill up on the healthy items such as fruits, vegetables, proteins, and whole grains.

Do not let hunger get the best of you. Do not skip those meals in anticipation of the upcoming family feasts. Finally, don’t deny yourself the desserts! After all, they are the highlight of the holidays. Instead of one large helping of a favorite, try some mini portions of several kinds.

Cope with Holiday Stress - Many people struggle

during the winter and holiday season, especially when

expectations are high, and routines are disrupted leading to overwhelming emotions. Preparation and planning are key. Self care is important, so be sure to make sure you are eating right, getting enough sleep, and scheduling in some down time. Resist the urge to do everything. Keep your expectations manageable and be realistic about what you can do. Anticipate stress and plan a strategy when things begin to feel stressful, such as going for a walk, or talking it out with a trusted and close friend.

Avoid excessive drinking and be conscious of spending plans. Financial stress and alcohol are main contributors to anxiety during this time. Seek assistance if needed.

No one needs to suffer during this time, and there are resources and professionals available to help. Lastly, consider doing things for others during this season.

Volunteering and donating are sure ways to impact your mindset during the season!

Reach Out to Family and Friends - For

many, this is the season to spend with family and friends. One of the best ways to cope during the holidays is seeking out time with people. However, there are many who feel lonelier than at any other time of the year. Not everyone has close friends or family.

Maybe they have lost their loved ones, or maybe they are unable to get around as they have in the past.

Loneliness is linked directly to early mortality. Connecting with and supporting others during this season is critical in preventing the loneliness and isolation that so many experience. This is especially true for our Masonic family members, specifically older Brethren and Masonic widows. Taking the time to connect with your Masonic family can lead to renewed and enriched relationships. This also provides an opportunity to learn if anyone is struggling. When and if you discover this, call our Outreach Specialists at Live Better At Home at (800) 321-9357. They will work with you and your lodge to bring them relief.

What first drew you to Masonry?

Rob Moore: What initially drew me to Masonry was the opportunity to be a part of something larger than myself, and to develop a comprehensive philosophy for life.

I took a lengthy tour of the Detroit Masonic Temple led by my predecessor and was overwhelmed by the incredible history and architecture, as well as the descriptions of what Masonry was. That was a catalyst towards my Masonic journey.

What is your favorite community event your lodge is involved in?

RM: The main community-based focus of Zion Lodge is our Earl Drew Wheelchair Ramp project. For over 30 years, we have assisted hundreds of disabled people in the metro Detroit region and beyond achieve a measure of dignity and independence.

To be able to directly apply the Masonic lessons of charity and service to humanity in a tangible manner is a great feeling.

What do you remember most about day you were raised?

How has your lodge coped/adapted with the challenges of the last year?

What first drew you to Masonry?

Corey Cain: A Brother named Russ Cram and his Gordon Spurlock Masonic Ring. Mr. Cram, how I knew him at the time, came into my furniture store looking for a new living room set. I happened to notice the Masonic ring on his right hand and I inquired about what it meant.

He immediately stopped what he was doing, sat down and began to have a conversation with me regarding the Masonic Fraternity. It wasn't just the words, but the sheer emotion that emanated from him as he told me about his experiences in the Fraternity that had me hooked.

What do you remember most about day you were raised?

What is your favorite community event your lodge is involved in?

CC: My favorite community project is the scholarship that we give away every year. These applications can really give you an insight to how our future may be shaped by these individuals, and how our humble donation will not only change the life of these young people, but how it might forever change the future of the entire world. We are all just a link in the chain of life.

How has your lodge coped/adapted with the challenges of the last year?

CC: As with all the lodges in the state, we were forced to shutter our meetings until we were able to meet via CC: I was raised on Zoom and conduct September 11th 2010, what little business we in Lake Superior Lodge could.
