No SMALL Feat Recognizing Brother Edward Jenner and His Innovative Contribution to Immunization and Eradication of Smallpox

t seems as though you can’t turn on the television or radio without hearing about vaccines! Our entire world has become inundated with information (some truthful, some not so much) about vaccines. It reminded me that as we are impacted by this coronavirus and the vaccine which promises relief from its grip, we are indebted to a member of our noble fraternity for the millions of lives saved over the centuries because of his observations, study, and determination to rid the world of the scourge of smallpox.

Edward Jenner was born on May 6, 1749 in Berkeley, Gloucestershire England. His father, the Reverend Stephen Jenner, was the Vicar in that village, and Edward received what would be considered an “appropriate” education. In 1770, at the age of 21, he was apprenticed to surgeon John Hunter, who gave him the best advice of his life in which he admonished the young man, “Don’t think – try.” Following his apprenticeship with Dr. Hunter, he returned to Berkeley and established a successful medical practice.

It was in this town in 1796 that he made the observation that milkmaids who had caught the milder disease known as cowpox (which manifested itself by a slight rash on the hands), seemed to be immune to the more virulent and deadly smallpox.

He theorized that if one contracted cowpox, that they would then be immune to smallpox. To test his theory, he experimented upon a young (eight years old) boy, James Phipps, who had not contracted smallpox. In his experiment, Brother Jenner made a few scratches on the boy’s arm and rubbed into those scratches some infected material from the hands of a milkmaid. Brother Jenner then introduced smallpox to the boy through the introduction of dried smallpox scabs inside the nose. As predicted, the boy did not develop the disease.

Brother Jenner subsequently tested many other people with

his vaccine proving his theory that cowpox gave a greater immunity to smallpox.

Brother Jenner was an active Freemason serving in 1812 as Master of the Royal Lodge of Faith and Friendship #270 based in Berkeley, Gloucestershire. This lodge was regularly visited by the Prince of Wales, the future George IV and was to become closely associated with the Jenner family. The Royal Lodge of Faith and Friendship held a Science Select Lodge organized by Jenner, where lodge members had to produce a paper on a specific scientific subject.

The Royal Lodge of Faith and Friendship continued to celebrate the life and work of Brother Jenner long after his passing in 1823. His nephews Henry Jenner, and the clergyman William Davies, became members. The lodge emblem, used to this day, commemorates the gift to Jenner of a wampum belt by the Five Nations of North America after Jenner personally sent them a sample of the cowpox virus along with a copy of his work on vaccination. Jenner wore the belt in front of his apron at the last Masonic meeting he attended.

There have been many updates to this story, and our worthy Brother Edward may not have been the first to use this treatment (the Chinese are known to have utilized this process for centuries before Brother Jenner’s birth), but Brother Jenner is the most widely known in the western world and his impact both as a Freemason and as a doctor warrant our respect and our gratitude.

n the early 1880s, a Mason named John D. Jennings of Grand Rapids, Michigan recognized a need within the Michigan Masonic community for a place where ‘aged and infirm’ Masons and their wives, widows, or orphans could go to receive medical and social care. The place he envisioned would assure Masons and their loved ones “…that their declining years (would) be as bright and comfortable as human efforts and love can make them.”

By the end of 1885 the Michigan Masonic Home Association was organized, and two years later 112 acres of land adjoining Reed’s Lake in Grand Rapids were purchased. The foundation for the Home was laid in 1888, and on January 27, 1891 the Home was formally dedicated.

On a cold Wednesday morning in February of 1910, tragedy struck in the form of a devastating fire. Though no lives were lost, the Home itself was completely destroyed leaving everyone to wonder, should the Home be rebuilt? It was determined the need to care for the Brothers was still there and greater than ever. Through the years, that need continues to grow, as did the Michigan Masonic Home.

The Michigan Masonic Home, now known as Masonic Pathways, resides in Alma and is one of Michigan’s continuing care retirement communities. The Home’s services have expanded over the years to offer a variety of services, which includes Independent Living, Assisted Living, Nursing and Ventilator care.

The unwavering support of the Masonic community, coupled with the dedication of devoted staff and volunteers, assure that the Home will continue to bring innovative services and exceptional care to our brothers Page 4

and residents for many more years to come.

Over Two Centuries of Masonry Honored

W

hat began as an appreciation call from The Michigan Masonic Charitable Foundation’s Kristina Ostrander, later turned into a ceremony, lunch, and reunion honoring incredible Masonic longevity.

Late last year, Kristina called to express the Foundation’s appreciation to William Striggow of Owosso Lodge #81, and during their conversation she discovered that he was near the 70-year mark in the fraternity and that his brothers were due for awards as well! Officers of Owosso Lodge were contacted as well as family of the Striggows and a ceremony was held in Masonic Pathways’ Doig Chapel in January with William receiving his 70year award while Jack and Robert Striggow (both also of Owosso #81) received their 60-year awards! Cousin Stephen Striggow of Holly Lodge #134 and his wife Mae were in attendance as was the newest Mason in the family, Billy Belanger of Mason Lodge #70 and about ten other family members. In all, 238 years of Masonry were represented by the Striggow family. The brothers were thrilled their childhood friend Tommy Amidon of Jackson #17 (65 years) was able to attend as well!

The brothers and Brother Amidon all attended the oneroom school in Corunna and the three Striggow brothers all joined Corunna Lodge #115 (which merged into Owosso in 1978) at different times and all served the lodge as Worshipful Master. When asked what prompted him to join the fraternity, Bob Striggow recalls “I had an uncle I thought a lot of and he was a Mason so that was it for me.” William took it even further “I had an uncle on the Striggow side, an uncle on my mother’s side and both granddads were members.” Brother Bill also recalls his favorite meal at Corunna Lodge, “For Christmas dinner we always had a chili and oyster supper.” Congratulations to all and thank you for your years of service to the fraternity!

rand Master Larry Inscho was installed as Grand Master at the Grand Traverse Resort in May of 2021.

Now, as we approach May of 2022, Most Worshipful Brother Inscho reflects upon his time in office and his approaching transfer of that office to Right Worshipful Brother Leonard Davis, the current Deputy Grand Master.

The Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge last May was conducted while still in the clutches of the restrictions of the COVID-19 mandates of masking and social distancing. And while those mandates made our Annual Communication a bit of a challenge, it was an opportunity to handle the affairs of the fraternity together, something that was not available in 2020.

The high points of Grand Master Inscho’s time in the East is the continuing and expanding brotherly relationship of the Grand Lodge of Michigan and the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Michigan. Several joint meetings, from a holiday party to the Festive Board held in Ann Arbor, have now become annual events filled with joy and fun. Joint fellowship and degree presentations and attendance at each other’s Grand Lodge sessions continue to grow and prosper.

Pass

The Grand Master's excursion to the George Washington Masonic National Memorial and Washington,DC provided very happy memories as well. Visitations to the House of the Temple, Arlington, VA, and the placing of wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the tomb of George Washington rounded out that wonderful trip. Of course, there are many details with which the Grand Master must contend, and our Grand Master was not excused from those responsibilities. His diligence and insistence upon obtaining as much information as possible before making decisions is most earnestly appreciated by his staff and his subordinate officers.

As our Grand Master closes out his time in the Grand East, it is our pleasure to wish him the very best and our sadness at his departure from amongst our ranks.

ur Deputy Grand Master, Leonard K. Davis was initiated an Entered Apprentice in 1989. That same year followed with his being raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason on March 3rd, 1989. Right Worshipful Brother Leonard is the third generation Mason in his family; however, his son Paul has carried on the tradition and is now the fourth generation of RW Brother Davis’s family to joined the craft.

Our Deputy Grand Master served his lodge, Solomon’s Key Lodge #580 as Worshipful Master in 1994, 2008, and 2013.

At that time, he was the youngest Worshipful Master to have served in that office in Solomon’s Key Lodge. In 2004 he was honored by his lodge with the designation of “Mason of the Year.” Subsequently to that honor from his lodge, he was elected as the District Mason of the Year in that district.

RW Brother Davis also has served the fraternity in Michigan as a member of the Board of General Purposes, and a Regional Grand Lecturer. In 2016-2017 he served as a Grand Steward under the leadership of then Grand Master, William Finkel. He ran for the Grand Lodge line in 2018 and was elected to the office of Grand Marshal at the Annual Communication held that year. He is a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite in Michigan, the York Rite bodies in Michigan, Shriners International, and holds honorary membership in 25 Michigan Masonic lodges.

In his personal life, he is married to the love of his life, Anita, and they have enjoyed that union for six years.

Together they have six children, (one daughter and five sons). Their family continues to expand, and they are the proud grandparents of nineteen grandchildren. As Leonard and Anita say, “Yours, mine, theirs and ours.” They are also the loving dog parents of Ollie and Maddie.

They enjoy camping (or “glamping” as they call it) and Leonard loves getting on the links and playing a couple rounds of golf.

In his professional life, our Brother has been employed in the building supply business for over 34 years.

As Leonard states, “It started as a summer job, and its been a long summer!”

We are excited as our Right Worshipful Deputy Grand Master continues his journey and his leadership of Michigan Masonry.

What first drew you to Masonry?

Ryan Balash: I had done very little research on Masonry but knew that it was a charitable organization. I understood that Freemasonry was neither political nor a religious organization. I had also read that it was a brotherhood steeped in tradition. The fact that it was a “society with secrets” piqued my interest. I had been involved in other organizations, but they did not have the Fraternal Brotherhood I was looking for. I found that in Masonry.

What is your favorite community event your lodge is involved in?

RB: In Bay City, every year we march in the St. Patrick’s Day parade. The pandemic caused a two-year hiatus. This year the parade returns. One of our Brothers had a vision of a hundred Masons from all over the state marching down Center Avenue. The lodge has decided to try to make that a reality. The Brothers of Joppa have all been working tirelessly in that effort.

What are your lodge's goals in 2022?

What first drew you to Masonry?

When I think about being raised, my mind immediately dwells on Alex and other brothers who have now passed on, but who were there to give of themselves to help me grow, and to provide me that experience as a waypoint on my journey.

Robert Linn: For me, that journey started 12 years ago while I was active duty Coast Guard and assigned as temporary roommate of a fellow named Ryan Lewis. Ryan had just been raised and he was diligently studying his ritual in the evenings.

What do you remember most about the day you were raised?

ideas that COVID has held us back from for far too long. Our overarching goal for the year is to support and advance Masonry in Michigan. We plan to do this by working with Lodge Success Specialist, WB Corey Curtiss, to increase our visibility in the community and on-line through events, sponsorships, and by generally being a positive example of community membership.
