Executive Director Notes In this magazine, there are featured stories from Outreach clients and their families. I would like to thank those clients and families for being willing to share their stories. It helps to remind us all of the impacts that the Outreach Programs have on peoples lives. This magazine also reminds us of the joy in giving to support those programs, and I think the Masonic Home’s annual golf tournament once again showed how much fun we can have raising funds together to help others.

As we move into Annual Communication this fall, we will continue to celebrate 25 years of the Outreach Programs. We will kick off the celebration weekend with the Truman Club dinner held on September 24th. The Truman Club dinner is a black-tie event to both raise funds and recognizes the on-going support from our Masonic Home donors. As donors continue to move into the various society levels of giving, we acknowledge and thank them. We will also recognize the lodge with the most members present at the dinner presenting them with the traveling T3 trophy.

If not for the generous support of our donors past and present, the Masonic Home could not continue to provide assistance to those clients featured in this magazine.

On Sunday following the Truman Club dinner, September 25th, the Masonic Home will hold an open house event at the Masonic Complex. There are so many visitors in town on Sunday, who have expressed interest in visiting the Masonic Complex, but the Masonic Complex is not normally open on the weekends. This year, the Masonic Home will have the Masonic Complex open Sunday afternoon along with the Masonic Museum. The Masonic Home of Missouri is very proud of the museum and its role in

helping to preserve and safeguard the history of the Masonic Home and Missouri Freemasonry.

The Harry S Truman National Historic Site has just placed on loan with the Masonic Home, for a limited time, Truman’s Scottish Rite 33rd degree white cap. Also, the final piece of restored art glass from the Order of the Eastern Star Chapel, once located on the Masonic Home’s campus in St. Louis, is now on permanent display in the Masonic Complex lobby.

During Annual Communication, the Masonic Home looks forward to recognizing lodges obtaining new levels within the Vincil Society. We will also once again host the Masonic Home Representative Luncheon on Monday. As in years past, the Masonic Home would once again invite a representative from each lodge and all former Masonic Home Board Members to attend this luncheon. In addition to recognizing the Masonic Home Representative of the Year and the top Partnership Award recipients, we are looking forward to having a guest speaker this year at the luncheon.

We hope to see you in September to share in the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Outreach Programs!

The Burning Bush Art Glass As the crate was opened, staff held their breath, hoping that the imposing art glass window would be intact.

Sighs of frustration, tinged with disappointment were released when small pieces of the art glass could be seen broken and settled at the bottom of the crate. The 125th Anniversary of the Masonic Home of Missouri would just have to introduce nine other art glass pieces and the Burning Bush, an impressive 10’ tall piece of art glass, would have to wait until a benefactor could be found.

The window remained in its crate for two more years, until Jackie Walters, Major Gifts Officer for the Home met with Dr. Gene Ridenhour. After viewing the photos of the glass and understanding the importance of having it restored, Dr. Ridenhour became the restoration benefactor of the glass.

Art Glass Unlimited, a firm in St. Louis that had restored art glass previously for the Home, soon had the Burning Bush and started on the restoration.

Shortly after restoration began, word came that Dr. Ridenhour had passed away. Now staff was more determined than ever to get the glass restored and displayed in the lobby of the Masonic Complex in his memory.

The actual restoration took almost nine months with several vendors, including Art Glass Unlimited (St. Louis, MO), Timberline Custom Cabinets (Columbia, MO), Collegiate Awards (Columbia, MO), and Bob Scott Electrical Services (Wooldridge, MO) all working together.

On Friday, June 10, 2016, the energy in the room was palpable as everyone gathered around the 14’ tall black drape, blocking everyone’s gaze from the item

that they came to view. Richard L. Smith, President of the Board of Directors, welcomed everyone to the event. Barbara Ramsey, Executive Director of the Masonic Home of Missouri, spoke about the 25th Anniversary of the Outreach Programs; the 50,000 children assisted through the Creating-APartnership Program (CAP) and the story behind why everyone was gathered in the main lobby of the Masonic Complex in Columbia, MO. Jackie introduced Renee Ridenhour, Dr. Ridenhour’s daughter and then the drapes were pulled back to the lighted window. Exclamations of surprise, delight, and awe filtered through the room and cameras were soon clicking away to capture the beauty that now holds court in the main lobby of the Masonic Complex in Columbia.

Wine and hors d’ouvres were served, and guests toured the Masonic Complex, relaxing and enjoying music on the Square & Compass Courtyard. One favorite gathering place was the Masonic Home of Missouri’s conference room that has been recently updated. A donor wall was gifted to the Home by Grace A. Thornton, in honor of her father, Virgil N. Oliver, who belonged to Mt. Washington Lodge No. 614. Pottery donated by Boonville Clay Company graces the conference room table, which sits on carpeting donated by Dave Griggs, Floring America and paintings by local artist, Jerry D. Berneche, a member of Acacia Lodge No. 602, adorn the Missouri River themed room.

The evening was a beautiful tribute to our gracious benefactors and the Masonic Home’s past.

Brother C. E. “Gene” Ridenhour, M.D. Brother C.E. “Gene” Ridenhour was born near Belle, Missouri to tenant farmers and raised on a farm near Koenig, Missouri. Dr. Ridenhour attended a one-room country school and that only books, maps, and a blackboard were available for learning. Dr. Ridenhour recalled that hunting, fishing and work were ‘my favorite pastimes’.

After graduating Valedictorian at Belle High School, he was drafted for the Korean War in 1952, continuing his military service until retiring as a Colonel. Dr. Ridenhour earned an Education degree in 1954 from Central Missouri State College and returned to Belle, Missouri as a teacher. Dr. Ridenhour began to notice ‘that all the great men there were Masons’ and petitioned his home lodge in 1953, becoming a Master Mason two years later.

Dr. Ridenhour received a degree in Languages with the University of Maryland’s European Overseas Branch (1957) and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry at the University of Missouri - Columbia (1959) with Phi Beta Kappa honors. Dr. Ridenhour graduated 1st in his class with Summa Cum Laude honors from the University of MissouriColumbia’s School of Medicine in 1963.

Dr. Ridenhour met his wife, Ruth Edith (Dobek) Ridenhour while stationed in Rhein Main, Germany. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Renee Tammy Ridenhour Colley, and LTC Gary Gene Ridenhour. He retired as a General, Oncological and Vascular Surgeon and volunteered as a hospice worker. Dr. Ridenhour enjoyed gardening, Methodist church work, volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, and choral work with MU and his church.

Dr. Ridenhour supported the Masonic Home of Missouri because “it is the greatest charitable organization that I know. I pledged to be charitable to my brethren and their families”. Sadly, Dr. Ridenhour passed away on September 1, 2015 and was not able to see the Burning Bush Art Glass completed but the art glass will stand as a tribute to his memory and his philanthropic nature.

Nosey Nellie and Lucy McGuire “And Nellie –“ said Mama, smiling, “When you are inclined to be “nosey” – you can discover lots more about what God has done and what He has made. You will never run out of things to see, believe me!”

T

hat is how the book Nosey Nellie Visits the Farm ends. How it became is another story. It starts with Mrs. Lucy McGuire and her unwavering faith in God. “I just woke up one morning, and He [God] just told me that I needed to write and illustrate my books. That I needed to tell others about the beautiful things that God has done for them.” Says Mrs. McGuire. “Sharing the books with children has been a gift to me.”

Mrs. McGuire is a spry 96-year-old sweetheart who resides in an assistant living facility, having moved from a senior apartment in 2014. The Masonic Home of Missouri has been providing financial assistance for Mrs. McGuire since 2013, through the LongTerm Financial Outreach Program. Interviewing Mrs. McGuire for this story resulted in staff having the case of the giggles and quite a bit of eye rolling due to her witty comments. “My husband, James J. McGuire, and I met in high school and were married for 62 years. James was a member of De Soto Lodge for 32 years before he passed in 2001.” Lucy states, “He loved being a Mason and was such a good man.”

Lucy opened a small box next to her chair and handed a photo of her husband to staff. The photo was a very handsome man, dressed in a military uniform with a dashing mustache adorning his face. “Mrs. McGuire!

Your husband was handsome!” staff exclaimed to which Mrs. McGuire giggled and said, “I used to tell all the ladies that they could look as much as they wanted but that he was taken!” Laughter floated throughout the room.

“My husband learned how to carve wood in his 50s, and I learned how to paint.” Lucy shares, “When people get older, they need something to keep them interested and alive. Never stop learning, help others, and share your hobby and talent with others.”

That is what Mrs. McGuire has been doing, sharing her talent and beliefs with others. Mrs. McGuire has written and illustrated two books so far; Nosey Nellie Find the Real Christmas, and Nosey Nellie Visits the Farm. The Nosey Nellie books were inspired by a homemade doll, fashioned with a gourd face and cotton dress. The doll resides in Alabama with a

relative of Mrs. McGuire, but she retains a photo of the doll in her photo box. Mrs. McGuire writes the story and does the illustrations for the book. Her niece, Elizabeth Peters then puts the books together and pays for them to be published. “I sell them to whoever wants them. They cost $7.00 each, but we have to charge another $3.00 for shipping and handling. Elizabeth is working with a new publisher for us because it’s getting expensive to publish the books but I’m so blessed to be able to share these stories with others. It’s not about the money, though; it’s about getting the stories into the hands of children to teach them about God.” “I’ve been very blessed in my life. I get to share my talents with others. I get to live in this safe place, and if it weren’t for the Masonic Home, I wouldn’t be

able to live here, where I’ve made a lot of friends, and I couldn’t be happier.” Lucy states, “The Masonic Home has made such a difference in my life. I’m just truly blessed.”

Staff couldn’t resist purchasing both books but on the condition that Mrs. McGuire autographed them. Lucy giggled and then proceeded to write in each book.

In Nosey Nellie Visits the Farm, Lucy signed “Go get nosey too and you will find some wonderful things God has made for all of us.” Good advice for anyone, so get nosey.

Everything Fell into Place Meeting the Lane Brothers is guaranteed to make you smile. When they aren’t trying to rib each other, you can quickly become the target of their good-natured humor. Per their laughing self-descriptions, Jim (the older one) and Mike (the taller one) Lane are Masons and both belong to Elvins-Ionic Lodge No. 154. “Our Dad, William L. Lane, raised Jim through all the

degrees and raised me to my third degree.” Mike says proudly, “Being a Mason has just been part of our lives.”

As staff explained how the interview and subsequent story would be used, it was very evident that the Lane Brothers were on board to tell their story and share their love of their mother with others, although Jim said he was going to ‘let Mike do all the talking.’

“Mom was in a Senior Support System, and we wanted to find a safe assisted care facility for her.” Mike relates, “We visited one facility to check it out, and it was alright, but we decided we should look at a couple more. This facility was the second stop for us, and we just knew it was the right place for our Mom.” “When we sat down with the facility’s social worker, to go over the financials and to try to figure out how our family could afford to have Mom here, the social worker asked us if our father was a Veteran. Well, he had been, so we were going to need to do some paperwork to get those benefits started, and then the social worker asked us if our Father had been a Mason,” Mike says, “I think we were both a little surprised and wondered why that would make a difference. We told her that indeed, Dad had been a Mason. The Social Worker told us that the Masonic Home of Missouri might be able to help with the cost of Mom staying at the facility.”

According to a 2015 Genworth Financial cost of care survey (http://www.assistedlivingfacilities.org/ directory/mo), the monthly base rate for Missouri assisted living is approximate $2,525 but additional fees beyond the base rate may apply. If your loved one needs additional special hygiene aids, laundry services, housekeeping, and special dietary needs, the daily rate may be higher. The State of Missouri defines an assisted living facility (also called residential care facilities) as one in which 24-hour care is provided for more than three residents and includes housing, meals, supervision of health care, storage and distribution of medications, and assistance with any Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).

Receiving benefits from the VA can take some time and in the case of Mrs. Lane, it was no different. “The Masonic Home helped cover the cost of Mom’s care until the VA started paying.” Mike relates, “It just all

fell into place the way the situation panned out. We were just thankful that the Masonic Home stepped up to help us out until we could get everything lined up with the VA, then continued to assist us with the remaining deficit.”

Norma Lane is 93-years-old and has some health issues that affect her eyesight and hearing, but when staff and her sons finally caught up with her, she was waiting to get her nails manicured and enjoying conversing with other ladies also waiting. Norma was delighted to see her sons and readily gave up her spot in line to have photos taken with them. “Mom is happy here. She has a cousin and some of her lifelong friends living here, so it comforting to us to know that she is safe and being taken care of.” Mike continues, “It’s a weight off of our shoulders. Without the help that the Masonic Home provides, this couldn’t be possible. To us, this is something tangible. We see the gift that happens to our widows and Masons in need through the help our mother receives. It means a lot.”

Always and All Ways June 20, 1942 - “Mom has told me so much about you that I feel like I know you and just wrote this as though I were there talking to you.”

A letter from a soldier to a young lady he had never met. “Our love story began when Marie Lewis asked me to write to her son, Al. The Lewis family lived next door to my family on Jackson Street in the northeast area of Kansas City, Missouri. I loved his mother dearly, and I didn’t want to disappoint her, so I agreed to write to her son, although I had no interest in doing so…and had never met him.” Norma Lewis reminisces with a soft laugh, “Shortly before Mrs. Lewis asked this favor of me; I remember mother saying, “Oh Norma, come and see the soldier next door!” He was in the backyard, as I looked out the kitchen window and I said to Mother, “Oh he’s much too short for me!” He had returned home to visit his parents after being drafted and completing his year of service in the Army.

Pearl Harbor, so he was immediately called back into active duty. I remember seeing him at the curb with his duffle bag on his back, waiting for his ride to take him back to camp… still without having met.”

Norma continues with her story, “Al was stationed in Pasadena, California. He received a promotion, so I sent him a congratulations card. Within very few days, Norma had received a two-page letter from him.

They exchanged letters for several more months, and he would often call his parents and ask me to be at their house so we could talk still never having met one another.”

June 20, 1942 - “Where I am working now is in a newspaper building right here on the main street of Pasadena. We sleep here and the only thing we have to go to the company for is to eat, which makes it swell. One of the boys took down with meningitis last night and another fellow took down with it today. Now all the company except us are in quarantine. I reckon we will be taking some more shots so the medics will be satisfied. It seems that all they do over in the medics is look for some reason for shooting something else into us.”

Sadly, Marie Lewis died in December of 1942 and Al traveled home for his mother’s funeral. “We met for the first time during this visit when Al and his sister, Nita, came over to my house late one evening.” Norma says, “I was coming down the stairs in beautiful pink lounging pajamas, and he told me later that he had

decided at that moment, “That is the one I want to marry!”

Norma Lewis has sparkling eyes and a radiant smile. Her apartment is comfortable, and you are surrounded by photographs of her husband, Albert “Al” Benjamin Lewis, daughters, grandchildren, and other family members. Her apartment has a balcony and kitchenette, although Norma prefers to eat at the new beautifully appointed Bistro downstairs.

“My father worked at the stockyard for many years and was a Mason,” Norma smiles, as she reflects, “I had a brother, but he passed away in 1991. I attended the College of Commerce and worked for Black Veatch Telephone in the Engineering Department.”

After some more explaining about how she was engaged to another military man and exchanging letters with Al, Norma started laughing and told how Al put her on the bus to visit her fiancé but while she was being wined and dined by her fiancé one of Al’s letters would show up. “I left there and soon after broke off the engagement and by November, Al and I were married.

We were married 50 years, six months, and 27 days.”

Norma smiles and says, “I guess it was meant to be. Al was such a good man.”

Albert Benjamin Lewis was initiated into Kansas City Lodge No. 220 in April of 1947 and served as a Deputy

District Grand Master from August 1984 until August 1985. Norma was a member of the Daughters of the Nile. They had two daughters, born ten years apart.

One of the daughters lives in Kansas City and the other lives in Georgia. The Lewis’s have four grandchildren and a great-grandchild, with another one on the way.

Al passed away in May of 1994.

“I kept all of our letters over the years, and my granddaughter typed them up and made a book for me.” Norma has brought the book out for staff to see.

As we leaf through the typewritten pages, you can’t help but smile at the love on the pages.

October 4, 1943 - “This is about the best place I’ve seen yet cause everyone tries to make you feel as much at home as possible.”

The Masonic Home appreciates Norma sharing her story with us and for allowing us to be part of her family. “I love what the Masonic Home has provided for me. Without their assistance, I wouldn’t have this lovely apartment or get to be where I feel safe and comfortable. I have a lot of friends, plenty to do to keep me busy and my daughter stops by frequently” Norma says with a slight smile on her face, “I love seeing the ladies from the Home when they visit me.

It’s just perfect for me. Lots of entertainment and I even get to take trips, thanks to my daughters. We visited Warm Springs in Boonville to see the Clydesdales.

There’s even a local man who travels all over the world and he comes and shares his travels, photo and talks about where he visited. Those are really interesting and entertaining. We also go to the Independence Center once a month. That’s getting harder for me as I have to use my walker.” Norma pauses and then smiles, “ I wanted to attend the Masonic Home’s 125th Anniversary celebration, but it just didn’t work out. I cannot believe how lucky I have been and how much the Masonic Home has done for me.”

October 4, 1943 - “I better close for now though cause I’m not supposed to be writing while I am on duty, and that is just what I am doing. I love you Always and All Ways, my sweet.”

It is Never Easy Written by Karen Dale, daughter of Margaret Dale

Margaret Dale will celebrate her 88th birthday on June 3, 2016, & since May of 2013, she has lived in an assisted care facility in Carthage, MO. This was not an easy decision for the family, but one they knew had to be made. Margaret has always been a hard worker & never had what would be considered “easy” jobs. As a young woman, she worked for years at the Shriver Cheese Plant in Carthage until she & her husband, Lee Roy, moved to Lamar where she helped with the family business, Dales’ Packing Company. In 1987, the business was destroyed by fire, & Margaret & Lee Roy had to find other jobs. In 1993, Lee Roy died. Margaret worked as a hostess at the Blue Top Restaurant until finally, at age 80, she retired. She moved to Carthage where she’d been born. Margaret enjoyed her independence, driving to Walmart or lunch with friends or to her granddaughters’ school programs.

After a series of falls & mini strokes, it became evident Margaret could not live alone. Her children, Bill Joslen, Lisa Tubaugh & Karen Dale, knew it was not going to be easy for Margaret to give up her independent lifestyle. Financially, it was going to be difficult as well.

They also knew they wanted their mother in a clean, friendly & professional care facility where Margaret could participate in activities as well as still maintain some sense of freedom.

They found the help they needed from the Masonic Home of Missouri. Margaret & Lee Roy always had been active in the Eastern Star chapter in Lamar. Lee Roy was a Mason. This was their regular social routine as they rarely missed meetings & served as Worthy Matron & Patron. Even as Margaret got older, she would still be called upon occasionally to read Esther.

The girls remember their parents dressing in rather formal attire to attend these events. Margaret seemed so tall in her high heeled shoes! As children, Lisa & Karen were involved as well as they enjoyed the annual

Christmas celebrations & dinners held at the Lodge.

Later, they would be active in The Order of Rainbows for girls.

The Eastern Star was important to the family. As a country girl, Margaret grew up working hard rather than attending social events. Eastern Star allowed her the opportunities she missed to be involved in such settings. It helped her self-confidence grow as well. It seems only fitting the organization that meant so much to Margaret has once again stepped in to provide her with opportunities.

Without the Masonic Home of Missouri, Margaret would not be able to live at her care facility. She would simply be financially unable to burden the expense.

Undoubtedly, Margaret would prefer to live on her own, driving herself to the store & walking without the aid of a walker. Since this is not possible, she can to live in an environment where she can interact daily with other residents & staff, & participate in such activities as Bingo & church. She maintains a sense of self by displaying family pictures, decorating in her style, & keeping a well-stocked supply of Little Debbie’s cakes! Her family can enjoy the reassurance of knowing their mother’s well-being is the top priority with the care facility’s staff. Leaving a Legacy The Legacy Society recognizes and honors the generosity of donors who have chosen to support the Home by leaving a lasting legacy through estate planning. Planned gifts ensure the mission of the Masonic Home now and into the future, having an enduring impact on the causes of which the donor is most passionate.

Due to the generosity of Gordon Buckner, the Masonic Home can permanently recognize these individuals through The Legacy Society Tree. Gordon funded The Tree in memory of his father, Charles M. Buckner Jr. Charles Buckner was a successful business person in Marshall, Missouri and was a member of Trilumina Lodge No. 205 A.F. and A.M., Sedalia Chapter No. 18 R.A.M., Sedalia Council No. 42, Cryptic Masons, St. Omer Commandery No. 11, KT, 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and the Ararat Temple of Kansas City.

Charles received his 80-year pin in 2000 and passed away on July 7, 2001.

Gordon, too, was successful during his lifetime and enjoyed sharing with many organizations. Gordon passed away on May 24, 2016, and will be remembered by his generous giving to so many organizations.

Spotlight on the Armed Forces Program Introduced in 2015, the Armed Forces Program has two components. The first is similar to our Widows Program; the Masonic Home would like to recognize and thank our Masonic and Order of the Eastern Star Veterans. The second component is similar to the Creating-A-Partnership Program (CAP) in that the Home would like to partner with Lodges and Chapters for those who have served and those currently serving our Country.

Honor Flights

The Masonic Home has created a list of Masonic Veterans. Once a Masonic Veteran is identified, the Masonic Home will send him or her a veterans lapel pin as a small token of our appreciation for his or her service to our Country. Throughout the year, the Masonic Home will send special mailings to those veterans to honor and thank them for their service.

The Masonic Home is asking for help in identifying our Masonic Veterans. Please contact the Masonic Home at (800) 434-9804 to add the veterans in your Lodge or Chapter to our list. We will need their name, address, date of birth, Branch of Service and Service Dates.

Honor Flights (www.honorflight.org) started in 2005.

This program honors veterans by helping them visit Washington D.C. to visit their memorial. The Masonic Home partners with Lodges and Chapters throughout Missouri to help fund some of these Honor Flights for our well-deserved veterans.

The Partnering to Honor Program (PTH) is a matching funds program between the Masonic Home and local Lodges and Chapters. It provides an opportunity to partner to help fund Honor Flights and care packages to those individuals currently serving. The Masonic Home may match up to $10,000.00 per Lodge or Chapter each fiscal year, July 1st to June 30th.

The Masonic Home is not affiliated with the Honor Flight Program, nor is the Masonic Home responsible for any aspect of the Honor Flight Program. The Masonic Home works only with Lodges and Chapters to help fund this program. If you are a veteran interested in the Honor Flight, you must contact the Honor Flight Program directly.

Care Packages Lodges and Chapters can work within their Lodge or Chapter to make and send care packages to active duty members, serving overseas or in the United States.

There are some organizations that put together care packages and accept monetary donations, such as church, VFW or American Legions.

If your Lodge or Chapter would like to donate toward a care package that will be made by another entity, Lodge or Chapter funds may be matched. Matching funds must go toward the purchase of specific items. The Masonic Home will not match funds for general operating expenses.

Completing the Partnering to Honor Application The Lodge or Chapter must complete and submit their application along with their matching funds to the Masonic Home. The application can be accessed on the Masonic Home of Missouri’s website at www.mohome.org or mailed upon request.

After the application is approved, the Home will return to the Lodge or Chapter a check with the matching funds. Approved funds will be sent to the Lodge/Chapter payable to the designated store or 501 (c)(3) organization. The Masonic Home will not reimburse Masonic Lodges, Chapters or individual members of a Lodge or Chapter.

Once items are purchased and/or funds donated, the Lodge or Chapter will be responsible for providing a copy of the receipt(s) and/or a letter from the organization showing how funds were spent. The Lodge/Chapter will not be able to make additional requests until the receipts are received. All matching funds must be raised by the Lodge and/or Chapter, and the application must contain two signatures, with one being either the Worshipful Master, Worthy Matron, Lodge/Chapter Secretary or Treasurer.

IRA Charitable Rollover Now Permanent!

CHARiTY

The IRA charitable rollover has become a permanent tax law. The permanent IRA rollover allows people age 70½ or older to make direct charitable gifts (up to $100,000 for an individual or $200,000 for a married couple) from an IRA. The amount given to charity will count toward your minimum required distribution, but does not increase your taxable income.

Things to Remember…

• You must be age 70½ or older when the transfer is made to the Masonic Home of Missouri.

If you find yourself in one or more of the following tax situations, an IRA Charitable Rollover may be perfect you.

• Checks must be made payable directly to the Masonic Home of Missouri by your IRA custodian. [Caution: Please do NOT have the check issued in your name.]

1. You take the standard income tax deduction rather than itemizing deductions.

2. You do not need the income from the required minimum distribution.

3. The additional income from your RMD (required minimum distribution) would result in taxation of your social security benefits or a change in your income tax bracket.

4. You would be unable to take other deductions (such as for medical expenses) due to the increased income.

5. You have maximized your charitable deductions and/or are subject to the 3% limitation on itemized deductions.

6. You are planning to give the IRA to charity anyway.

• The gift must be from a traditional or Roth IRA. Gifts from a SEP IRA or other types of retirement accounts are not eligible.

• The maximum amount you can give to charity from your IRA in one year is $100,000 ($200,000 for couples).

• Your gift must be outright. For example, it cannot be used to fund a charitable gift annuity or remainder trust.

What is the T3 Trophy?

It all started with a photograph. Four members of Temperance Lodge No. 438 were dressed in tuxedos and enjoying the Truman Club dinner. The men were asked to pose for a photograph and were claiming bragging rights for having the most Truman Club members in attendance from a single Lodge. Until one of the wives of a member mentioned that there were four members from Barry Daylight Lodge No. 17; including 3 of those that had been bragging about their membership in Temperance Lodge. Laughter wafted around the room as a tiebreaking member was sought out but none were found.

Soon after the dinner, members of Temperance Lodge approached the Masonic Home about sponsoring the Truman Traveling Trophy (T3) which is awarded to the lodge that has the most Truman Club members attending the annual banquet. In 2015, the T3 trophy went to Acacia lodge No. 602 (Columbia, MO) with five members present.

The 4-1-1 On Your 401(K) By: Carly Dibben, Financial Counsling Caseworker The 401(k) is currently the most widely utilized savings/ investment vehicle for retirement in the United States.

Unlike the defined-benefits programs that were once popular with most employers, the 401(k) is a definedcontribution program where an employee can elect to have a percentage of their income deposited into an investment account for later use during retirement. As with all things financial, the 401(k) can be confusing and intimidating. Here are a few basics everyone should know when making decisions regarding the finer points of their 401(k) account.

Pre-Tax and Post-Tax Contributions Most employees opt to have their 401(k) contribution made before income taxes are withheld from their paycheck. The pro to this option is that your taxable income is lowered. Essentially, you get to keep a portion of your income tax-free, so long as it remains in your 401(k) account, and the amount of your earned income that is taxable is lowered, resulting in less money withheld for taxes. This can be very helpful if your income is high enough to push you up into the next tax bracket. The larger the contribution you make to your 401(k) account, the lower your taxable income.

The downside though is that you will eventually be taxed for the income and the earned interest income on your investments when the funds are withdrawn or distributed.

Another option is to have your 401(k) contribution made after income taxes are withheld. This is called a Roth 401(k). Unlike the traditional 401(k), the funds that go into a Roth account have already been taxed and therefore your contribution will not lower your taxable income. The pro to this is that you will not be taxed again once those funds are released from the account at a later date. However, this does not secure them from fees and fines should you opt for an early disbursement or loan.

How Much Are You Allowed to Contribute There are many things to consider when making this decision. The two most important factors though are contribution limits and whether or not your employer contributes to your account. For 2016, the 401(k) Elective Deferral Limit is $18,000.00 per person. However, if you are 50 or older, you are permitted to make additional Catch-Up Contributions up $6,000.00, raising your total Elective Deferral contribution to $24,000.00 for the year. Should your employer make contributions or offer matching funds, your contribution limit increases to $53,000.00 (or $59,000.00 for those over age 50). This is known as the Annual Defined Contribution Limit.

Knowing the maximum amount that you are permitted by law to contribute will assist you in determining the actual amount that you can contribute. This is best decided by considering all of your monthly expenses, savings deposits for emergencies and planned purchases, and other annual expense. Any additional funds should be budgeted to be deferred to your 401(k) to maximize your retirement savings and fully benefit from any matching contributions your employer might offer.

How Your Funds are Being Invested Your 401(k) account is an investment account that has the potential to multiply your contributions based on how those funds are being invested. The majority of those with a 401(k) have their contributions invested in portfolios that include a combination of mutual funds, stocks, bonds, and other approved investments. How aggressive or conservative the investments in your portfolio are is completely up to you. An investment advisor that assists in the management of your 401(k) plan can help you to determine your investment tolerance.

14th Annual Charity Golf Tournament The 14th Annual Masonic Home of Missouri Charity Golf Tournament was held on Monday, May 2nd at the Columbia Country Club. All proceeds from the event support our Creating -A-Partnership (CAP) and Partneringto-Honor (PTH) Programs.

This annual event, sponsored by Central Bank of Boone County and Central Trust Company, is a favorite among Masons and non-Masons alike. After a quick briefing and welcome by Board President, Richard L. Smith, this year’s Kentucky Derby themed tournament kicked off with the traditional “call to the gates”. Thirty four teams participated in the event and enjoyed themed activities throughout the day. One of the most popular stops along the course was the mint julep tent. Mint Juleps are a traditional drink of the Kentucky Derby and were sponsored at the tournament by the Billiard’s on Broadway and prepared by Chef Jacques Laboile. Players also enjoyed frozen custard donated by Andy’s Frozen Custard and mimosas donated and prepared by the Champagne Ballroom. A silent auction was available throughout the day with many great items to bid on, although baseball and airline tickets seemed to be the “hot” items of the day! The photo “booth” returned again this year and boasted a number of themed props for players to enjoy.

Teams participated in several games including two Masonic Home favorites: Roll the Die and Choose Your Tee. A new game, Run for Roses, gave teams an opportunity to putt through the starting gates for an advantage on Hole #4.

Individual games included the putting contest, longest drive, closest to the pin and Hole-in-One. Unfortunately, there was no winner for the $10,000 cash prize on the Hole-in-One contest but there were many other winners announced at the Awards Banquet, sponsored by U.S. Bank.
