Executive Director’s Report Organizational Chart Programs Overview Financial Assistance Programs Partnership Programs Non-Financial & Recognition Programs Financial Report Financial Statements Development Report Donors and Partners

Executive Director’s Report L et’s face it. Annual Reports are boring – on the surface anyway. They are boring until you realize that every program discussed, every fact and figure presented within is actually a person. As you move through this report, I encourage you to think of the people. Behind each number is a story of someone whose life was fundamentally different because the Masonic Home assisted them in their time of need. I went to a workshop earlier this year for non-profit organizations. It was a small group, which provided an opportunity for interesting discussions. I had never heard of many of the other organizations, and the Masonic Home of Missouri was new to them as well. During this workshop, we were asked to identify a problem, explain what your organization is doing to address that problem, provide an example of the outcome, and share the story of one person impacted by that program. My co-workers and I stood before our blank sheet of paper hanging on the wall. It was in that moment the extensiveness of what the Masonic Home does to assist people took hold of me. The Masonic Home does not respond to just one problem. We do not have one outcome, and we have so many stories. It would be faster to pick a program than to try and choose just one story. This Annual Report is a snapshot of the past year. It tells the stories of the programs through numbers. The report is extensive, because what we do is actually very vast. The people we serve are diverse and plentiful. The Financial Report and the Masonic Home’s financial position are also important to share. It is strong, and we are proud to share our careful custodianship of the monies entrusted to our care. We are proud of what was spent to provide for those in need. Fiduciary responsibility is important to the Board of Directors and the staff. We cannot control the stock market nor can we foresee the future, but we can do all within our abilities to place the Masonic Home in the best possible financial situation today and for the future. I was recently asked, “If the Masonic Home’s financial position is doing well, then why should I donate?” We can

talk about the financial sustainability of the organization going forward. We can talk about the fact that donations do not cover operating expenses, which means the Masonic Home must make careful decisions with regard to the stock market and be mindful of its ups and downs. We can tell you that every donor dollar is going directly to assist someone in need through our Outreach Programs. All of those things are true, and I would ask you - do you want the Masonic Home to remain a public charity? We have been for over 125 years. Without the support of our donors, the Masonic Home will cease to be a public charity. It is our moment in time to protect what was given to us by those generous, caring, dedicated men and women who came before us. They believed in the mission of the Masonic Home – do you? Thank you to all of those who join with us this past year and answer that question with an unequivocal – yes! Your contributions help us impact each and every person represented in this report.

Outreach Programs connect the Masonic Home of Missouri to members of the Masonic Family, while also partnering with Masonic Lodges and Order of the Eastern Star Chapters to make a difference in their communities.

FINANCIAL & NON-FINANCIAL The Masonic Home of Missouri provides financial assistance to Masons and their wives, Masonic widows, Eastern Star ladies, and Masonic children. Although the Financial Assistance Programs are the core of the Masonic Home’s mission, the Outreach Programs are much more than financial assistance alone. They are also about providing resources and education, honoring our Masonic Veterans, and staying connected to Masonic widows.

PARTNERSHIP Masonic Lodges and Eastern Star Chapters also partner with the Masonic Home to help their fellow brothers and sisters in need. However, the assistance through our partnership extends beyond the Masonic family. Together we are helping children in need in their communities, and partnering to fund honor flights for veterans and care packages for those currently serving.

The Masonic Home can act as a liaison between the member and the Lodge or Chapter, connecting the two.

The Masonic Home can act as a liaison, connecting the member with the Lodge or Chapter.

Sometimes the need contains a financial component. In Fiscal Year 2018, Samaritan Lodge No. 424 partnered with the Masonic Home to help a member in their community. The Lodge provided the labor to build a sidewalk and the Masonic Home of Missouri funded the materials in the amount of $741. 14

NEED ASSISTANCE?

Imagine that you once attended meetings but, due to a health or transportation concern, you could no longer attend or participate. What would it mean for someone to come by and visit with you? What if you simply needed someone to rake your leaves during the fall, fix a porch railing, or install a window unit but didn't know who to call or could not afford to pay someone? By supporting our brethren and widows in these simple tasks, we continue to maintain contact with those who have served before us.

Over the past year, the Financial Education Program continued working to increase the number of self-referred clients. he Masonic Home of Missouri built the Masonic Museum, a permanent five themed gallery museum, to weave together the historical significance of the fraternity, the history of the Grand Lodge of Missouri, and the history of the Masonic Home of Missouri, while providing an opportunity to share the historically significant Masonic items from individuals, lodges and chapters throughout the state of Missouri.

Over the past few years, new Grand Lodge artifacts have been discovered. Due to these discoveries, it was determined that there was an opportunity to tell new stories in the museum in the Leadership Gallery and the Patriots and Pathmakers Gallery. The newly redesigned galleries were completed last fiscal year with an official unveiling at last year’s Grand Lodge Annual Communication. Annual Report 2018

NET ASSETS

As a result of another positive investment market, net assets increased by 5% to nearly $149 million as of June 30, 2018. The overall makeup of the Masonic Home’s funds remains consistent with the prior year. Investments continue to comprise 93% of these assets and slightly more than half of those investments are restricted, which means that access is either not allowed or is limited. 24

Total revenue decreased by 7.5%, due largely to a strategic change in investment policy, although all sources of income saw declines. Individual donor support decreased by approximately 4.5%. Investment income continues to comprise the bulk of total operating revenues at nearly 73%, while donations accounted for the remaining 27%. As donations, especially estate gifts, decreased over the years, investment income became even more necessary for the programs of the Masonic Home to function; however, the higher our investment income, the more difficult it is to satisfy the Public Support Test. Donor support increased dramatically over the past couple of years, which is critical to begin meeting the IRS’s minimum requirements again. We are diligently working to increase donor support. This is one more example that shows that we cannot carry out our mission without your help.

IMPACT

During Fiscal Year 2018, 100% of every donor dollar went to fund the Masonic Home’s programs. Direct Assistance increased by over 2% compared to last year. Take a look at the Programs section of this publication to see your donations at work. Your on-going support is critical to the ability of the Masonic Home to carry out this charitable work. During Fiscal Year 2018, with your help, the Masonic Home touched the lives of over 22,000 individuals, with nearly $1.4 million in charitable assistance!

DONATION DISTRIBUTION

FUNDRAISING EFFORTS

During 2018, contributions made up 27% of our total revenues, with investment income accounting for the remaining 73%. For the first time in well over 5 years (excluding the 125th Anniversary), total donor support decreased versus the prior year. The Masonic Home aims to continue enhancing our fundraising efforts to help fund program growth, while keeping operating expenses stable.
