During the year, many Masonic Home of Missouri Representatives throughout the State, assist us by referring, educating, and supporting our Outreach Programs. They take the time to educate themselves on the Outreach Programs, submit a widows list, use our resource guides, work the Creating-A-Partnership Program, and maintain contact with our staff on a regular basis. As an important link between the Masonic Home and Lodges, Representatives enable the Home to continue to identify eligible Masons, their wives, honored widows, female members of the Order of the Eastern Star and children throughout the State. Each year, the Masonic Home of Missouri recognizes a representative who has gone above and beyond in his dedication to his duties.

This year’s honoree for Representative of the Year is Right Worshipful Brother Anthony “Tony” J. Kerns from King Hill Lodge No. 376 in St. Joseph, Missouri. Tony received a plaque from the Masonic Home in honor of his dedication to his duties as a Home Representative during the Masonic Home Representative Luncheon that was held on Monday, September 29, 2014 during Annual Communication. When asked what he thought about receiving the award, Brother Kerns stated, “I truly appreciate this award as it means that I am going in the right direction. I have been a Home Representative for the past three years and I feel the role of a Representative is like a counselor. We provide guidance to the Lodge and to the Masonic Home of Missouri regarding the Outreach Programs by acting as the liaison for both entities. I get joy out of being a Masonic Home Representative, you get to see people’s faces as you talk to them about the programs and while you don’t know how the referral always ends due to the confidentiality part of a referral, you still know that you tried to guide someone in need to an incredible resource that exists: The Masonic Home of Missouri”.

Brother Kerns is an endowed member and Past Master of King Hill Lodge No 376 and Temperance Lodge No. 438 (Smithville, MO). He is a current member of: Barry Daylight Lodge No. 17, Missouri Lodge of Research, Harry S Truman Forest No. 212 (Tall Cedars of Lebanon), York Rite, Scottish Rite and Moila Shrine. Tony states he has “been active in the majority of these great organizations but served in one of the most humbling offices I have ever held...District Deputy Grand Lecturer of District No. 7 (St. Joseph, MO area)”.

“It has been such an honor to be the Masonic Home Representative in not one, but two, of the Lodges I attend (King Hill and Temperance). I have been part of the transformation from bricks and mortar to the great Outreach Programs we now offer members and their families” states Tony. “The Masonic Home of Missouri is going in the right direction by offering the Outreach Programs and helping those who need it in their own homes and their own communities. My favorite program is the Short-Term Financial Assistance Program which assists younger, eligible Masons who might have suffered a medical emergency or have a financial need. So many people are afraid to ask for help due to pride or the perceived stigma of charity but I always tell them that there is hope out there and even if they do not qualify for help from the Masonic Home of Missouri, the staff will guide them to other resources through the Social Services Outreach Program”.

When giving advice to other Masonic Home Representatives, Tony says, “Stay ahead of the game. Be proactive versus reactive. Know the programs, talk to the Staff, get involved, host a presentation where your Lodge Members, their wives, widows and other family members can learn first-hand what the Home offers.

Work closely with your Lodge’s Secretary, update your widows list continually, know the members in your Lodge and always ask them ‘How have they been?’….those simple words might lead to a bigger discussion about needs”.

Tony has worked in the wholesale building supply business for the past 15 years and is currently employed as a Project Manager for Associated Equipment Sales in Lenexa, Kansas. He also keeps very busy with his personnel business, Kerns Konnections, Inc., as a Federal Firearms Licensee and NFA/Class III dealer.

Brother Kerns is also an honored member of the Truman Club and donates to the Masonic Home of Missouri, “I have experienced the true joy of Brotherly Love and Relief. This is why I donate to the Masonic Home.

This is why I am so blessed and honored to be a part of the Truman Club and THE GREATEST FRATERNITY IN THE WORLD!!!”

Duties of a Masonic Home Representative The Masonic Home of Missouri Representatives are essential to the success of our Outreach Programs.

Representatives assist by being the point-of-contact for local Lodges or Chapters and the people who need the Home’s assistance. The position of the Masonic Home Representative carries certain responsibilities.

They include: 

Educating yourself and your lodge members about the Outreach Programs available to eligible Master Masons, wives, widows, and female members of the Order of the Eastern Star and children throughout the State of Missouri. The best way to do this is to attend a Representative Training in your area. Take the initiative and host one of these trainings for the District or for other area Lodges and/or Chapters.



Collect a list of all of the Masonic Widows from your Lodge and forward them to the Masonic Home to ensure that they are put into our database and receive our magazine, Outreach Brochure, a Widow’s Pin and notifications throughout the year of upcoming events.

Get your Lodge active in the Creating-A-Partnership (CAP) Program for area schools and children in your community. Remember to submit an article to the Missouri Outreach regarding your CAP participation.



Track your volunteer hours and turn them into the Masonic Home of Missouri. If your Lodge/Chapter Widows Listkeep track of how many lodge members visited the widows and how visits widows in the Holiday Season, much work went into the visits. You may submit your volunteers hours using one of our timecards, emailing them to rlightfoot@mohome, calling us at (800) 434-9804 (ask for Rhonda) or by inputting them on our website at http://mohome.org/Masonic-Home-Representatives.html. There is also one in this packet for your use.



Discard outdated materials to avoid confusion. You can request new materials at any time by contacting Rhonda Lightfoot, Membership Relations Coordinator at (800) 434-9804.



Give out friendly reminders on the Penny-A-Day Donation. This fundraising campaign helps support our Outreach Programs with 100% of all unrestricted donations are used for direct client support.

Unfortunately, our donations do not cover all of the support that we continue to give and we have had to supplement much of the support of the programs with investment income.



Make Referrals. Keep your eyes out for members that may be in need of assistance from the Masonic Home. Keep track of members who stop paying their dues. Make sure it is not due to a financial issue. If a Mason is not a member in good standing, he will not be eligible for assistance from the Home, and neither would his widow in the event of his passing. Work closely with your Lodge’s Secretary on this issue.



Utilize the website at www.mohome.org to gain useful and up-to-date information. We also have a Missouri Outreach Publication Dates Facebook page, Twitter Feed and encourage you to read the Missouri Outreach Magazine and pass along the information contained within to others.

Do You Know Someone in Need?

The Masonic Home of Missouri provides charitable assistance to eligible Master Masons, their wives, widows, female members of the Order of the Eastern Star and children throughout the State of Missouri. If you know of someone in need, there are several ways to refer them to the Home:

By calling us at 1-800-434-9804 (Toll free) and ask to speak to a Financial Outreach Caseworker.

By Email to rlightfoot@mohome.org Fill out our on-line application at http://mohome.org/Initial-Application.html Download, print and mail the application which is available at the above link or by request by calling the Masonic Home.

Talk to your Masonic Home Representative in your Lodge or Chapter to be referred.

Fill out an on-line referral card for yourself or someone else in need. This can be located at http:// mohome.org/Initial-Application.html or is available by request.

After staff receives the referral and makes contact with the person being referred (usually within 2 working days), the staff will gather pertinent information from the referred individual and makes an appointment to speak to them in person. All referrals are confidential and although Staff cannot provide additional information to the person making the referral, we can notify them that we have made contact with the person in need.

Widows List Twice a year, the Masonic Home of Missouri mails out the widows list for each Lodge to the Masonic Home Representatives and the Home relies on the Representatives to help keep the list updated. The lists are mailed out each May and November but can be updated anytime during the year by emailing Chantana at cirvin@mohome.org or calling (800) 434-9804.

Each year, we mail Christmas cards, magazines, program information, and widow pins. Many of these items are returned either from incorrect addresses or the person is deceased. By making sure our list is as up-todate as it can be, the Home will save funds.

We also have several Lodges who claim no widows. Please make sure to talk to others in your Lodge and ensure that all widows are recognized. A current list was handed out to the member of the Lodge who attended our Representative Luncheon on September 29, 2014. There is also one enclosed within this newsletter for your Lodge’s use. Visit with your Lodge members and make sure that all widows are represented on the list.

Volunteer Hours If your Lodge delivers flowers to your Widows or participates in the Masonic Family Cares Outreach Program, are you reporting your volunteer hours? As a 501 (c) (3) organization, the Masonic Home of Missouri tracks our volunteers and their hours for the IRS as part of our in-kind donations process.

An in-kind donation is the value of a service or goods rendered to an organization by volunteers.

Not-for-profit organizations rely heavily on volunteers. For example, imagine that your Lodge members helped with the Open House event in June: Four members assisted with parking of cars and trash removal for 4 hours each. The Home, in return, does not have to hire people to do these important functions and

can show that 16 hours of assistance was given in volunteer hours towards the project’s budget, thus reducing our expenses. Some other items that can be reported: Visiting Lodge widows, assisting an elderly member with removal of window a/c units, updating your Widows Lists, organizing a Ladies Luncheon & Tea, speaking to your Lodge about our Outreach Programs, etc.

You can report your hours by filling out a Volunteer Hour Timecard online at the website or by emailing them to rlightfoot@mohome.org.

Please be as specific as possible to ensure that correct credit is given. List how many members assisted with the project and how many hours it took.

Ladies Luncheon & Teas During the 2012 Masonic Home Representative luncheon, staff introduced a new way of reaching out to the Lodge members, wives, widows and Chapters of the Order of the Eastern Star. Replacing the ‘old’ Home presentations was the idea to hold Ladies Luncheons & Teas, with the area Lodge sponsoring the event and Staff from the Masonic Home of Missouri presenting the program. This year, Staff has visited 16 Lodges, a Shrine Temple Club, and the Widows Sons State Conference Meeting. We have presented on our Outreach Programs to over 480 members, their wives, widows and many Order of the Eastern Star members all over Missouri. Unfortunately, four of our booked presentations had to be canceled at the beginning of the year due to severe weather.

We continue to book presentations and invite you to include this in your yearly meetings. By inviting wives, widows, family members and Lodge members to attend these important presentations, everyone can be educated about our Outreach Programs and history. MWB John D. Vincil Master Builder Society What is the MWB John D. Vincil Master Builder Society?

The MWB John D. Vincil Master Builder Society (Vincil Society) is a recognition program, similar in nature to the Truman Club, which recognizes qualifying Lodges, Chapters and other organizations based on their cumulative giving to the Masonic Home of Missouri since January 1, 2014.

Who was John D. Vincil?

Rev. John D. Vincil served two terms as Grand Master in 1866 and 1868, and later served as Grand Secretary for 27 years. It was during his tenure as Grand Secretary that he actively participated in the creation of the Masonic Home of Missouri, serving on the original Board of Directors. He was also an integral part of the formation of the Order of the Eastern Star in Missouri in 1875, serving as the first Worthy Grand Patron. When the General Grand Chapter of the United States was organized in 1876, he was selected to serve as the first Most Worthy Grand Patron.

An orphan himself, Rev. Vincil was very passionate about the need for and the creation of the Masonic Home of Missouri. In1889 he made a call for support to Lodges for the dedication of the Masonic Home.

At that time, Masonic Lodges across Missouri came together to raise $7,500; a staggering sum of money at that time! Since then, Missouri Lodges and Order of the Eastern Star Chapters have continued to financially support the work of the Masonic Home of Missouri.

Who is eligible to participate in this recognition society?

The Vincil Society was created to recognize organizations, rather than individual donors. It is open to all Lodges, Chapters and other organizations.

How does my Lodge/Chapter join?

There is no application required. Your organization will be notified and you will be invited to join once your cumulative giving has reached a qualifying amount. If your Lodge participated in the John C. Ralls Society in support of the 125th Anniversary of the Masonic Home, your Lodge is a charter member of the Vincil Society. Regardless of participation in the Ralls Society, all qualifying donations made to the Home during 2014 will go toward your organization’s cumulative giving total.

We already give to the Home through Penny-A-Day, what else do we need to do?

We appreciate your support! The following donations made by the organization to the Masonic Home of Missouri will be included when calculating cumulative giving. These gifts include, but may not be limited to, the following: 

Penny-A-Day (PAD) – a program in which participating Lodge members contribute at least one penny per day or $3.65 per year to the Masonic Home of Missouri. These funds are collected by the Lodge with the member’s annual dues and a check for the total collected for PAD is mailed to the Masonic Home.



Memorial and Honorary Gifts – these gifts are often made by a Lodge, Chapter or other organization in memory of departed brethren, widows or in honor of a specific person or event. Donors are asked to submit a note with their gift indicating the name and address of the next of kin or individual they would like to be notified of their gift. For example, a Lodge may choose to make a donation to the Home in honor of a Past Master. If they would like the Past Master to be notified, his address should be included with the gift.

Square & Compass Courtyard Paver Stones – individuals, Lodges and Chapters can purchase a granite paver stone that is custom engraved with the message of their choice. This stone is placed in the Square & Compass Courtyard located behind the Masonic Complex in Columbia, MO. This is an excellent way to honor a member, Widows memorializeList a loved one or simply leave a lasting impression at the Masonic Complex.



Event Sponsorship – a gift made in response to an appeal for event sponsorship, such as a hole sponsorship at the Golf Tournament or in-kind donation for a charity auction.



General Contribution – other gifts sent in response to a specific appeal from the Home (i.e. John C. Ralls Society during the 125th Celebration) or an unsolicited contribution given at the discretion of the donor. For example, if a Chapter holds a trivia night to raise money for the Outreach Programs, this unsolicited gift would be considered a general contribution.

The following do not qualify when calculating the cumulative giving for an organization: Creating-APartnership, Per Capita, event tickets or registration fees, purchase of items such as the 125th Anniversary Coins and gifts to other Masonic Charities.

Cumulative giving is a total of all qualifying, monetary gifts made beginning on a certain date. For the Vincil Society, cumulative giving calculates all qualifying gifts made after January 1, 2014. throughout year and we giving wish to maintain What doesthe cumulative mean?contact with the correct person.

Where do we send our gifts?

Please make checks payable to the Masonic Home of Missouri and include any applicable paperwork (i.e. golf sponsorship form).

Is there a deadline for receipt of gifts?

Gifts can be mailed to the Home any time during the year; however, gifts must be received by August 31 st to be recognized in that year.

Giving levels are based on an organization’s cumulative, qualifying donations made to the Masonic Home of Missouri beginning January 1, 2014.

The Vincil Society giving levels are as follows: 

Supporter Level – cumulative donations of $500 - $4,999



Bronze Level – cumulative donations of $5,000 - $9,999



Silver Level – cumulative donations of $10,000 - $24,999



Gold Level – cumulative donations of $25,000 - $49,999



Platinum Level – cumulative donations of more than $50,000

How can I track my Lodge/Chapter’s giving?

At the beginning of each calendar year, society members who contributed to the Home in the previous year will receive a statement indicating their total giving for the previous calendar year, as well as their total cumulative gifts to the Home since January 1, 2014.

This will assist your organization in tracking your progress.

How do we know if we have reached a new level?

New Vincil Society members or those who have achieved a new level during the year will be notified in late summer so they can make plans to attend the fall recognition.

Annually in the fall, the Home will recognize new members and those who have achieved a new society level within the current year. Recognition will be given as follows: Supporter Level 

Announcing a new Outreach Program!

The Masonic Home of Missouri currently offers eight Outreach Programs that offer either financial or social Widows List service support to Missouri Master Masons, their wives, honored widows, female members of the Order of the Eastern Star and children throughout the state. We are excited to announce our ninth program ….The Armed Forces Program, which will honor our Veterans and Active Duty military. This program will be multifunctional and will allow for Lodges and Chapters to participate in honoring our Armed Forces members (past and present) in partnership with the Masonic Home of Missouri.

The Masonic Home of Missouri would like to compile a database of our veterans as the first phase of this new Outreach Program. This database will enable us to mail out veteran pins and special recognition cards (birthday, Veterans Day, etc.) through out the year for our honored veterans. If you are a veteran of the United States Armed Forces, please help us update our database by providing the following information; 1. Full Name 2. Mailing Address 3. Please Branch of Service make sure we have the current Masonic Home Representative on file. Cha-Ching! and the Financial Responsibilities with it.

Masonic Home Representatives, have you been looking for a way to connect with the youth in your community? Well, here’s a great opportunity to volunteer some time to the Home, provide a service to the younger generation, and expose them to your Masonic organization at the same time. The Financial Counseling Program has an educational presentation geared towards introducing kids ages 13 and older to the world of finance. The topics covered in this 45 minute presentation include:  How to generate an income.  Explanation of income and federal taxes.  What to do with the money they earn: save, spend, invest, and donate.  How to prioritize and track their spending.  How to create a budget.  Explanation of the credit, interest, credit report, and credit scores.  Discussion on the different types of student loans.

Thank you for all that you do!

This is a great opportunity for your Lodge to reach out to the youth in your community. Host this presentation for your local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, 4-H organization, church youth groups, and Masonic youth organizations, and introduce the youth in your community to your Lodge. The Masonic Home of Missouri’s Financial Counseling Caseworker will travel to your location to give the presentation free of charge. The Lodge’s responsibility would be to coordinate with the youth groups, provide the meeting space, and chaperone the event. All the efforts of the Lodge members involved would be logged as Volunteer Hours, an in-kind donation to the Masonic Home of Missouri where you donate your time and

Penny-A-Day The following letter was mailed to all Lodge Secretaries on November 14, 2014 from David W. Haywood, Grand Master and Brent Stewart, Masonic Home of Missouri Board President.

Many but not all of you are familiar with our “Penny-A-Day” program that asks a brother for a mere $3.65 a year to be used to support our efforts at the Masonic Home. This program was started in 1974 and allows us to “pool our pennies” to support our needy brothers, their widows and families.

It is easy to think that pennies, nickels and dimes cannot do much, but that is not true. MWB William J. Hill brought renewed attention to this program in 1982 indicating that there were 220 lodges that had donated $69,839.97 and the average contribution per person contributing was actually $10.51, rather than just $3.65.

In the 1990s, roughly 300 lodges participated each year and raised funds in excess of $100,000.000 for several of those years.

Unfortunately, in the last 15 years there has been a significant and steady decline in participation in the Penny-A-Day program with just under $22,000.00 received in 2013. We would like to reverse that decline, but first we want to thank you for your previous support and then ask you to help revive the Penny-A-Day program as part of your continued support.

The Penny-A-Day donations from your lodge will now be part of the new MWB John D. Vincil Society, which is a lodge recognition program designed as a way to thank your lodge for various ways you financially support the Masonic Home. We will be sending you updated information and materials on this new program in the next few months. Please encourage your fellow lodge brothers to continue to support the Penny-A-Day program and help spread the word on how this importatnt program can help the Masonic home continue to assist our Brothers, Sisters, widows and children—working together even our pennies can make a big difference.

More information about the Penny-A-Day Program, the Vincil Society and our new stickers will be mailed to Lodge Secretaries in mid-December. Please help us continue to grow this program by letting your Lodge members know how this impacts those in need.

The Masonic Home of Missouri has its own magazine, the Missouri Outreach that is published four times a year, with the fall edition being an Annual Report. This magazine focuses on helpful tips, resources and interest stories that assist Missouri Master Masons, honored widows and Order of the Eastern Star Chapters. It is mailed three times a year to approximately 46,000 people. The Annual Report is available at Annual Communication, Ladies Luncheons & Teas, our website or can be mailed upon request.
