Masonic Home of Missouri Annual Report 2020

With Gratitude

Executive Director's Report

T Barbara Ramsey Executive Director

he beginning of Fiscal Year 2020 was busy, exciting and full of so many positive things for the Masonic Home of Missouri. The Truman Club dinner was an incredible success, and we honored our first member of the Harry S. Truman Society of the Truman Club — Thomas A. Spencer. He shared a very personal story from his childhood, giving us a glimpse into the child that would grow into the Mason he became and the passion for which this Texas Mason supported our Masonic Home in Missouri. Masonic Home Board President Stanton T. Brown, II, featured the Veteran’s Flag ceremony during his Board President’s Report during the Grand Lodge of Missouri’s Annual Communication. PGM Nancy Lane and PGM Karlene Baylous also featured the flag presentation at Grand Chapter’s Annual Communication. The Masonic Home quickly found itself in short supply of flags, as Lodges and Chapters were holding Flag Presentations statewide. The Flag Ceremony touched the lives of so many — those receiving the flags, those giving the flags, and everyone in attendance there to honor and say thank you to our Veterans. Winter provided a reprieve (and a chance for us to get flags and pins ready for a busy spring). We couldn’t imagine at that time what was coming. 2020 is a year that will live in all of our memories. The COVID pandemic touched the lives of everyone. Schools closed. Churches closed. Business closed. Lodges and Chapters suspended meetings. The Masonic Home’s offices closed — but the work of the Masonic Home did not stop.

The pandemic challenged us all in different ways. For the Masonic Home, we took on the challenge of working remotely while ensuring that our clients never stopped receiving their much-needed assistance. Short-term assistance increased this past year by 135%. Overall, assistance increased in all financial assistance programs. The Partnership Programs saw a decrease, which was not surprising due to all of the closures. However, there were Lodges and Chapters that took on the challenge of finding ways to work the CAP program, and they helped children in need in their communities. When they were needed the most, Masons and Order of the Eastern Star members rose to the challenge. The Masonic Home is not alone in seeing donations go down. For the Masonic Home, individual giving went down by over 40%. We understand the stressful uncertain environment impacting our donors, and we had to cancel events, such as the golf tournament. We graciously appreciate each and every donor that supported us this past year — now more than ever, your generosity was needed. As this is printed, we are already well into our next fiscal year — 2021. We all know this new fiscal year has started with difficulties, and the stresses of the previous year are not gone. I don’t know what the upcoming year holds, but I do know that your Masonic Home will continue to help those in need. I believe that Lodges and Chapters will continue to make a difference for their members in need, as well as their communities. It is through our struggles that our strength is tested. Together we rose to the challenges in 2020, and together we will face the challenges of 2021.

Our "Centenarians"

I

n November 2018, Clifford and Alice Mathis were referred to the Masonic Home of Missouri for possible assistance through our Outreach Programs. We would begin our journey with this amazing couple who we fondly refer to as our “centenarians”, as Clifford is now 103 and Alice is 101. Clifford is a 70+ year Missouri Mason. Clifford and Alice originally received assistance through our Social Services program, as the caseworker at the Masonic Home helped them work through various issues. They had worked hard all of their lives, but they were quickly exhausting their resources and would need help to remain in an assisted living facility. In March 2019, the Masonic Home began providing that help to Clifford and Alice, and have continued assistance every month since that time. We also had the opportunity to honor Clifford, a WWII veteran, through our Veterans Program. He was presented his Masonic flag and certificate thanking him for his service, which he now proudly displays in his room. We are here for Clifford and Alice for as long as they need us. They have touched our lives and it is a privilege to be part of theirs.

“

I have lost my brother and my sister, but I know that I am not alone, because I have my Masonic Brothers and Sisters. I know you will take care of my Alice if something happens to me.” —Clifford Mathis, client

VETERAN'S PROGRAM

A Word from the Director of Finance

F Jodi Blake Director of Finance & Development

iscal Year 2020 has been a year like no other in recent history. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our current level of both revenues and expenses. Investment income and donor support each decreased by over 3%. Administrative and fundraising expenses each decreased by over 1% as well. During the last quarter of the year, travel came to a complete halt, with caseworkers and development staff working remotely. Despite major fluctuations in market value, investments rallied to end the year contributing to a slight increase in net assets. The extent of the impact of the outbreak in the U.S. on the Masonic Home’s performance will depend on certain developments, including the duration and spread of the outbreak, which are uncertain and cannot be predicted at this time. As a result, the future financial impact and duration cannot be reasonably estimated at this time. Investment income continues to comprise 72% of total revenues, while donations account for the remaining 28%. The Masonic Home continues to fall below the IRS Public Support threshold of 33 1/3% for donor support, and will again attempt to qualify through the 10% Facts and Circumstances Test by submitting a written explanation to the IRS illustrating why the Masonic Home should retain classification as a Public Charity, rather than a Private Foundation. It is in the best interest of our clients and our donors to be classified as a Public Charity, as classification as a Private Foundation comes with tax consequences for the organization

and limits on tax-deductible contributions for the donors. It continues to be a goal of the Masonic Home to grow donor support while maintaining a level of investment revenue that is sufficient to cover necessary expenses.

The Missouri Home builds lives. I built my life on Freemasonry, and I support the Home to help others build their lives.” Tom Spencer — to Ty Treutelaar Conference of Grand Masters of North America Madison, 2016

Last year, we had one donor hit an impressive milestone — Thomas A. Spencer became the first member of the Harry S. Truman Society of The Truman Club. This year, we recognize him for his final gift with a gold leaf on The Schneider Legacy Tree. Spencer was generous with his financial support and advocacy during his lifetime, and remembered the Masonic Home through his estate upon his passing.
