There are moments when things simply come together and make sense, and it is such an obvious connection that you are left wondering how you have missed it for so long. In the Fall of 2014, it became clear that the Masonic Home was missing something important, and it would once again need to look at expanding its Outreach Programs.

Last year, the Masonic Home celebrated its 125th Anniversary. Due to that historical event, there were many projects focused on the history of the Masonic Home. One of the things we learned was how the Home was impacted by WWI and WWII. During the First World War, there were 11 of the “Home’s boys” that served. At the end of the war, all but three returned home. According to the Grand Lodge Proceedings, “One boy remained in France, one is in a New York hospital badly wounded, but on the road to recover of health once more, and one made the supreme sacrifice in the battle of the Argonne Forest.” During WWII, the 1943 Grand Lodge Annual Communication Proceedings once again talk about how the Masonic Home’s boys went to war. “The Board has done a very splendid thing in looking out after the boys that have been inducted into the Armed Forces by protecting their interest in the following manner: Boys that have been inducted have not been discharged from the Home but are carried on the inactive list and in this way are privileged to return to the Home after they are released from the Service to complete their education as originally planned. To date there are seven stars on the Service flag of the Home, not including former members of the Masonic Home family.”

Following Annual Communication last year, I had the privilege of attending Grand Master David W. Haywood’s Area Meetings. It was an honor to be invited, and I greatly appreciated the opportunity to share the Masonic Home’s programs. During each Area Meeting, Lodges were asked to visit a Veteran’s Home or if one was not available in their area to host an event locally to honor veterans. During this part of the Grand Master’s Area Meetings, the speaker would ask the veterans in the room to stand. In each and every meeting, Masonic Home of Missouri

I was inspired by the number of men rising to their feet – older and younger men. It was an incredibly moving experience as the room erupted into applause to show gratitude for their service.

During this same time period, Rhonda Lightfoot was speaking to Buzz Barrows, the Masonic Home Representative of Union Lodge No. 593, about the Creating-A-Partnership Program. Union Lodge No. 593 was partnering with the Masonic Home to help provide funding for a local Buddy Backpack program.

During that conversation, Buzz shared that his Lodge also provides funding to the Honor Flight Program, an organization that helps veterans visit their memorials in Washington D.C. How could the Masonic Home not add a program that would recognize those who have served and those currently serving? The Masonic Home boys were part of that great generation who served in WWII and are currently being honored through Honor Flights. They are part of that group of Masons standing around the state during the Area Meetings.

This year through inspiration from the Grand Master and a local lodge, along with the leadership of the Masonic Home Board President, C. Brent Stewart, and the entire Board of Directors, the Masonic Home created a new Outreach Program - the Armed Forces Program. The Armed Forces Program provides us with an opportunity on an ongoing basis to recognize and thank our Masonic Veterans. In addition, it further strengthens our connection to Lodges and Chapters by providing an opportunity to partner together to help fund Honor Flights for veterans and care packages to those currently serving. More information on the Armed Force Program can be found in this publication in the Missouri Outreach Programs section. Missouri Outreach Programs Barbara Ramsey Executive Director

Financial Assistance Programs The Masonic Home of Missouri provided $951,485.51 in direct financial assistance to 116 Missouri Master Masons, their wives, widows, female members of the Order of the Eastern Star, and their dependent children.

An additional $138,570.41 was provided to nonaffiliated children in need through the Creating-A-Partnership Program statewide. This year, the Masonic Home began a new partnership program with Lodges and Chapters called Partnering to Honor (PTH). The PTH program provided another $6,210.00 in direct assistance to help honor Veterans by sponsoring Honor Flights. The total direct assistance provided in Fiscal Year 2015 was $1,096,265.92 through the Outreach Financial Assistance Programs.

Long-Term Financial Assistance The Long-Term Financial Assistance program provides financial assistance for primarily elderly Missouri Masons, their wives, widows and female members of the Order of the Eastern Star. This assistance provides monthly financial help for someone living in a facility, such as an assisted living facility or independent living facility, or for those living in their home or apartment. In the Masonic Home’s Fiscal Year 2015, the Home provided monthly financial assistance to 57 clients living in facilities throughout the state of Missouri and 3 clients in facilities in other states. The monthly assistance to clients in facilities totaled $778,720.85. The Home also provided monthly assistance to enable 6 clients to remain in their homes, totaling $37,432.00. Without this monthly assistance, these clients would not have been able to remain in their homes or facilities. They would not have been able to receive the level of care they needed, and may have been forced to prematurely move to an unnecessary level of care.

In addition to providing monthly assistance, the Home can provide clients assistance through one-time payments.

Clients can receive multiple one-time payment assistance and/or monthly assistance. For example, a client might receive assistance to remain in his home to pay for things such as utilities and medication each month. That same client could also receive assistance for a one-time payment to help pay an unexpected medical bill. The Masonic Home assisted 22 Long-Term assistance clients with one-time payments totaling $29,022.51. Many of these clients also received monthly financial assistance.

Short-Term Financial Assistance The Short-Term Financial Assistance program provides financial assistance primarily to younger Missouri Masons, their wives, widows and female members of the Order of the Eastern Star. This program recognizes that members of the fraternity may need assistance during unexpected hardships, such as an unexpected medical problem. Short-Term Assistance typically lasts 6 months or less, and qualified applicants may receive monthly assistance, one-time payments, or a combination of monthly and one-time payment assistance. In Fiscal Year 2015, the Masonic Home assisted 6 clients in their homes with monthly assistance totaling $7,468.94. In addition, the Home assisted 37 clients with one-time payments totaling $93,962.31. Five of the short-term assistance clients received both monthly assistance and one-time payments.

Children’s Outreach Program The Children’s Outreach Program provides financial assistance to legal dependents of Missouri Master Masons or Missouri female members of the Order of the Eastern Star. The Home provided assistance to 5 children totaling $4,878.90. This assistance helped the children with school supplies, clothing, medical bills, and assistance for medical necessities not covered by insurance.

Creating-A-Partnership The Creating-A-Partnership Program (CAP) is a matching funds program that creates a partnership between the Masonic Home and the Lodges/Chapters to assist children in need in their communities. In Fiscal Year 2015, the Masonic Home and 67 Lodges partnered together to provide $129,600.46 to children in need throughout the state, and the Home partnered with 8 Chapters to provide $8,969.95 to children in need. Through this partnership, Lodges and Chapters made a difference in the lives of over 6,700 children statewide by providing clothing, glasses, school supplies, and funding various projects to help children in need. The primary project Lodges and Chapters funded was the “Buddy Backpack” programs. Buddy Backpack programs are designed to send food home over the weekend for low income children. Because of the joint efforts of the Lodges/Chapters partnering with the Masonic Home of Missouri, there were thousands of children across the state that did not have to go hungry. The CAP program was introduced at Grand Lodge Annual Communication 12 years ago. In Fiscal Year 2015, there were 6 Lodges that had partnered with the Home for 10 years or more. An additional 21 Lodges/Chapters had at least 5 years of participation, and 15 Lodges/Chapters participated in the CAP program for the first time last year. This program makes a difference in the lives of children who would otherwise go without the things that so many of us take for granted, like a warm winter coat or food to eat during the weekend.

Armed Forced Program: Partnering To Honor The Partnering To Honor Program (PTH) is a new program introduced by the Masonic Home of Missouri in January 2015, as part of our new Armed Forces Program. PTH is a matching funds program between the Masonic Home and local Lodges and Chapters. It provides an opportunity to join together to help fund Honor Flights and/or care packages to active duty members, serving overseas or in the United States. In Fiscal Year 2015, the Masonic Home was so pleased to have 7 Lodges help start this program, and together we were able to provide $6,210.00 to fund Honor Flights to help veterans visit their memorial in Washington D.C.

Non-Financial Programs Social Services Program The Masonic Home of Missouri helps individuals locate services throughout the state. When Missouri Masons, their wives, widows, and female members of the Order of the Eastern Star apply for help through the Financial Assistance Programs, the staff completes an application with the client. In addition to determining financial need, the caseworker helps the client identify additional assistance available through other organizations and agencies.

This information is also available to those individuals that do not require financial assistance but may need help locating services. The Masonic Home maintains a list of agencies and resources specific to each county and Masonic District statewide, and this information is provided on the Masonic Home’s website at www.mohome.org.

It is located in the Outreach Programs section under the Social Services Program.

Widows Program For years, the Masonic Home has sent out condolence cards to families when a Missouri Mason passes away. In Fiscal Year 2015, the Masonic Home sent out 398 condolence cards to grieving families. If the Home is able to identify a Masonic widow, then a letter, a widow’s pin, and a widow’s card is sent to the Widow with her deceased husband’s Masonic information. Should she ever need assistance through the Financial Assistance programs, this widow’s card contains all the Masonic information a caseworker would need to verify membership requirements.

This year, the Masonic Home sent out 374 letters and widow’s cards. At least once a year, the Masonic Home shares the list of widows with the local Lodge. This helps to ensure that the list can be updated by both the local Lodge and the Masonic Home.

This past year the Masonic Home was invited to come speak at 33 ladies luncheons, teas, and dinners. We encourage our Masonic widows to wear their pins to these events. The Masonic Home would like to thank the Lodges hosting these events and inviting the Masonic Home to come speak and share with the ladies the wonderful programs the Masonic Home has to offer. For many of the ladies, it was the first time they learned about the assistance that could be available to them should they ever need assistance.

Armed Forces Program: Veterans Program The Masonic Home is asking for help identifying our Masonic Veterans. Once a Masonic Veteran is identified, the Masonic Home will send him or her a veterans lapel pin as a small token of our appreciation for his or her service to our Country. Since introducing this new program in January 2015, the Masonic Home has been able to identify and sent out pins to 935 Masonic Veterans. In addition to mailing the lapel pin, the Masonic Home sent out a mailing thanking our veterans for their services on Armed Forces Day. Please contact the Masonic Home at (800) 434-9804 to add the veterans in your Lodge or Chapter to our list. We will need their name, address, date of birth, Branch of Service and Service Dates.

Masonic Family Cares Program The Masonic Family Cares Program helps facilitate connections between Lodges, Chapters, Youth organizations and the Masonic brothers and sisters in their communities. Sometimes the Masonic Home receives requests from Masons or Order of the Eastern Star members, but the assistance needed is really a helping hand from the local Lodge or Chapter. The Masonic Home can act as a liaison between the member and the Lodge or Chapter, getting the two connected. Many Lodges and Chapters already provide this helping hand to their widows or elderly members, and the Masonic Home would like to help share those stories. We can all learn from each other, as we work toward making a difference in each other’s lives.

Financial Counseling Program The Financial Counseling Program offers financial educational services to our Masonic members and their family members through individual consultations and group educations presentations. In Fiscal Year 2015, the Program assisted 8 Master Masons, 1 Eastern Star member, 6 widows, and 21 couples. While 36 new cases were opened in Fiscal Year 2015, actual open cases span from the program’s inception, bring the total of active cases to 44 at the close of Fiscal Year 2015.

In addition to one-on-one consultations, the Financial Counseling Program also continued to offer large group educational presentations this past year. Currently, the Financial Counseling Program offers two presentations.

The first is an introduction to the world of finance for children ages 13 and older. The other is intended for older adults who are living on a fixed income and focuses on budgeting and explanation of available benefits. As with the one-on-one consultations provided by the Financial Counseling Program, these presentations are a free service and Financial Counseling staff will travel to your Lodge or Chapter’s location to give the presentation of your choice.

The Outreach Programs are all built around helping people in communities throughout the state, and the Masonic Home of Missouri exists in every community that participates in any one of the nine Outreach Programs. It is because of the local Lodges and Chapters that the Masonic Home is able to fulfill our mission “To assist eligible adults and children in need by practicing the principles of Freemasonry.”

Jodi Blake Jackie Walters Julie Kirchhoff Director of Finance & Development Major Gifts Officer Annual Giving Officer Fiscal Year 2015 was a year of fresh beginnings for the Development Department of the Masonic Home! We defined the two pieces of our Development work as Annual Giving and Major and Planned Giving and have staff in place that work very closely, while each having a different focus. We revitalized several aspects of our Annual Giving Program: we reintroduced the Penny-A-Day Program, enhanced The Truman Club, and spiced things up with a Cinco de Mayo Golf Tournament theme. We also added The Vincil Society to recognize Lodges, Chapters and other organizations for their support. We began the process of creating new donor walls for both The Truman Club and The Vincil Society, which will be installed prior to Annual Communication. Take a moment to visit the Masonic Complex to see your name or your Lodge’s name on our walls! We also welcomed a Major Gifts Officer.

For the first time in many years, the Home has an individual that can sit down and discuss estate planning and other major gifts to the Home. We have also begun the process of creating “The Legacy Society”, a recognition society for donors that have remembered the Masonic Home during their estate planning.

During 2015, 67% of the Home’s overall revenues were received from investment income, while the remaining 33% came from donations. 68% of these donations were received from individuals that remembered the Masonic Home during their estate planning. The remaining 32% was given by individuals, businesses, Lodges and Chapters. If you were one of those donors, Thank You! The graph below is presented to give you a sense of the different fundraising efforts that have inspired donors to give.

As stated in the Financial Report, “The ability of the Masonic Home to provide assistance to the membership and thousands of children throughout the state now and for years to come requires the continued support of donors who share our passion to fund the services provided…” The Masonic Home is so blessed to have received the support of over 1,500 individuals, businesses, Lodges, and Chapters over the past year! We were also the honored recipients of contributions from 16 individuals who included the Home in their estate planning, several of which are on-going trusts from which the Home receives contributions each year. We have included the listings of loyal Truman Club and legacy donors who supported the Home during this fiscal year in an attempt to recognize and thank the individuals listed.

Please know that we deeply appreciate your support. Your on-going support is critical to the ability of the Home to carry out our charitable work. Please take a look at the Outreach Section of this Report to see your dollars at work! Ensuring that our donors know just how much they are appreciated is very important to the Home. We have three distinct programs to do this: The Truman Club, The Vincil Society, and The Legacy Society.

The Truman Club The Truman Club is a recognition program designed to acknowledge loyal donors for their cumulative giving to the Masonic Home since January 1, 2004. As annual donations accumulate, members have the opportunity to move into one of nine giving society levels, each named after one of Missouri’s most illustrious Masons and Eastern Star members. Once cumulative giving reaches $2,500, members will be permanently recognized for their contributions on the Truman Club Donor Wall located at the Masonic Complex in Columbia, Missouri. In addition, each September Truman Club members come together for an evening of appreciation and fellowship to benefit this great charity. We encourage you to become a member of this elite group of supporters! Please contact Julie Kirchhoff, Annual Giving Officer, for more information.

The Vincil Society The Vincil Society is a recognition program designed to acknowledge Lodges, Chapters and other organizations for cumulative giving to the Masonic Home since January 1, 2014. These organizations will be permanently recognized for their contributions on The Vincil Society Donor Wall located at the Masonic Complex in Columbia, Missouri. New Vincil Society members and those who have achieved a new level during the year will be formally notified and recognized annually. Please encourage your Lodge, Chapter or other organization to participate in The Vincil Society! Please contact Julie Kirchhoff, Annual Giving Officer, for more information.

The Legacy Society The Legacy Society is a brand new program designed to recognize those individuals who have made a thoughtful intention to include the Masonic Home in their estate planning. Individuals who have remembered the Home in their will or other planned gift will have their name engraved on a silver leaf within the new Legacy Tree. When the Home is the recipient of the gift, the donor’s name will be moved to a gold leaf. We anticipate that The Legacy Tree will be finalized and installed in the Spring of 2016 and hope to have many individuals join this generous group. Please consider taking the lead from so many that have come before us and remembered the Masonic Home in their estate planning. The following are the audited financial statements of the Masonic Home of Missouri and the related disclosures.

These financial statements were audited by Williams-Keepers, LLC located in Columbia, MO. Transparence is very important to the Home. The note disclosures are very thorough and the entire report is provided in many ways. They are presented each year at Grand Lodge Annual Communication and subsequently published in the Grand Lodge of Missouri Annual Proceedings. They are also published in this Masonic Home Annual Report and made available on the Masonic Home website at www.mohome.org and upon request by contacting the Masonic Home of Missouri. In addition, the IRS Form 990, which is prepared based on these statements, is also available on the Home’s website, on the GuideStar website at www.guidestar.org, or by contacting the Masonic Home. For the year ended June 30, 2015, the Masonic Home has received a clean audit report, meaning that it is the opinion of the auditors that the financial statements are presented fairly, in all material respects, and in conformity with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). No adjustments to the records of the Masonic Home were recommended by the auditors during their audit, nor were any recommendations made to management regarding the fiscal operations of the Home.

The Home’s financial position remains stable with just over $135 million in net assets as of June 30, 2015. The overall makeup of the Home’s funds remains consistent with the prior year. Investments continue to comprise almost 92% of these assets and over half of those investments are restricted, which means that access is either not allowed or is limited. As one would expect with an investment portfolio of this size, the Home’s investment earnings make up a substantial portion of total operating revenues, 67% during Fiscal Year 2015. Donations accounted for the remaining 33% of revenues. Per capita fees from the Grand Lodge and Grand Chapter memberships are included in the total donation percentage and account for 2.3% of overall revenues. As a result, the Masonic Home has come to rely greatly on investment income as our main source of funding. The Home continues to work to maintain a level of investment income that will cover necessary expenses, while also revitalizing our fundraising efforts, both of which are critical to help fund the Home’s charitable work.

Overall revenues increased by approximately 13% as a result of increased investment income and a substantial increase in contributions received from estates and trusts. These are contributions received from individuals who generously included the Masonic Home in their wills. This is not a consistent revenue, but it is appreciated deeply and can make quite a difference during the year in which it is received. These donations made up 22% of total revenue this year. Please consider adding the Masonic Home to your estate planning. You can have a major impact on our future! The amount of donations received from individual donors, lodges and chapters decreased by about 30% during 2015. However, this doesn’t tell the whole story of donor support. The 125th Anniversary was held during the 2014 Fiscal Year. As a result, the support poured in and our donor support increased by 63% over the prior year! That was amazing, but much of the support was from one-time gifts specifically for the Anniversary. When Fiscal Year 2015 is compared to 2013, our donor support increased by 12%, which is a more valid comparison. In addition, the number of individuals that donated during Fiscal Year 2015 was higher than both 2014 and 2013. We are making strides in our fundraising efforts. Take a look at the Development Report within this publication for more information on what we are doing and how you can help.

Each year, when we file our IRS Form 990, we disclose the past five years of revenue and calculate a percentage that is considered “public support”. This is called the “Public Support Test”. The IRS requires that non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations complete this test and if the organization receives at least 33 1/3 of its income over that five-year period from donations, excluding unusually large gifts, it is automatically granted Public Charity status.

Falling below this threshold for two consecutive years requires the organization to attempt to qualify by submitting a written explanation to the IRS illustrating why the organization should be defined as a Public Charity, rather than Masonic Home of Missouri

a Private Foundation. It is in the best interest of the Masonic Home, our clients, and our donors to be classified as a Public Charity, because classification as a Private Foundation comes with additional reporting requirements and tax implications. Last year, the Home failed the Test for the second consecutive year and, therefore, submitted the required information explaining why the Home is, in fact, a Public Charity. We anticipate that the Home will be in this situation again this year and will attempt again to qualify via written explanation. For several years, the Masonic Home has ended each year with 30% to 35% of its revenue considered public support. In addition, As donations, especially estate gifts, have decreased, investment income has become increasingly necessary to allow the programs of the Masonic Home to function; however, the higher our investment income, the more difficult it is to satisfy the Public Support Test. This is one more example that shows that we cannot carry out our mission without donor support.

In reviewing expenses for the 2015 Fiscal Total Income Sources Year, I was reminded that the Home really does adhere to our fiscal responsibility. The 1.0% 8% Contributions 2% Home’s overall expenses decreased by 2.5% 0.3% over the previous year, but also decreased as 36% Grand Lodge per capita 21.9% compared to Fiscal Year 2013. Some areas OES per capita saw increases, such as fundraising expenses.

Estates & Trusts No golf tournament was held during Fiscal Year 2013, nor did we send out a Year-End Endowment Investment Income Appeal. We performed both fundraising Investment Income activities during Fiscal Year 2015, resulting Other Income 31% in an increase in expense in that area. Other expenses remained flat over the past two years, such as salaries and benefits expense. In addition, most administrative expenses have fallen as compared to the 2013 Fiscal Year. Donations, excluding estate and trust contributions, provided the funding for about 45% of the direct assistance provided. The remainder of assistance and a portion of other program-related expenses were funded by the donations received from estates and trusts. The remainder of program-related expenses and all administrative and fundraising expenses were funded by investment income.

Total Operating Expense Distribution The Board of Directors and staff of the Masonic Home take very seriously the fiscal responsibility that we have to our clients, our Outreach Services donors and the entire Masonic family. The ability of the Masonic Home to provide assistance to the membership and thousands of children throughout the state now and for years to come requires the continued support of donors who share our passion to fund the services provided, staff to keep operating expenses low, a Board committed to helping their brothers and sisters in need, program staff dedicated to carrying out the mission of the Home, and the entire Masonic family enthusiastically partnering with the Home to reach as far into each community as possible. The Home continues to be blessed to have all of these.
