Dear Maryvale Friends,
Happy New Year! I hope that you had a magical Christmas surrounded with the blessings of family and friends. The girls have returned to campus— refreshed and ready to take on the second semester after what we hope was a restful break.
In the pages ahead, you will see many of the ways that our girls continue to learn, lead and succeed This month, many of our seniors are experiencing much success as impressive college acceptances pile up.
Members of the Class of 2017 have gained admission to the United States Naval Academy, University of Chicago, Boston College and Villanova — just to name a few. As Maryvale elevates its academic program, colleges and universities across the country are taking note — creating amazing outcomes for our students.
This success would not be possible without the hard work of talented teachers whose innovative lessons in the classroom capture the attention of our girls every day. Be sure to check out the profile (Pages 6-7) of Maryvale’s George Kapusinski, who is taking Maryvale’s technology program to the next level. Also, I draw your attention to the article on Servant Leadership (Pages12-13), highlighting the partnership between Campus Ministry and the Leadership Institute
Our girls are not only succeeding in the classroom, but also on the field, in the theater and in the broader community. By now, I’m sure you’ve heard that Maryvale has captured seven IAAM championship titles in the past year! Additionally, our fall performances of “The Little Mermaid” in the Erinn McCarthy Humanities Hall proved to be sell-outs!
Maryvale, itself, is succeeding in very measurable ways. As you will also see in the pages ahead, giving is up thanks to generous parents, grandparents, past parents, alumnae and friends like you. The Maryvale Fund grew from roughly $504,000 in fiscal year 2015 to nearly $679,000 in fiscal year 2016 —a 34 percent increase. All told, $1.2 million was raised during fiscal year 2016, which ended on June 30,2016.
Further, the school continues to attract record interest from prospective families. We have received more applications this year than any other in the school’s history. Young women in Baltimore are discovering what our gifted students and accomplished alumnae already know: Maryvale is the place to be.
Speaking of our alumnae, I continue to be in awe of inspiring Maryvale graduates. Whether succeeding in college or career, I am constantly learning of advanced degrees earned, jobs landed, promotions won and awards received.
Through our newly reorganized and expanded Alumnae Association Board, the sisterhood is being united. Make sure you check out the back of the Messenger or our website at www.maryvale.com/events for our exciting lineup of spring events.
In March, we welcome back the “Men of Maryvale,” those Lower School boys, who – yes –did attend the school when it was co-ed. In April, we will host an Alumnae and Varsity lacrossegame as well as a new wine tasting event. May brings Reunion Weekend, featuring a new 5K run and 1-mile walk. Mark your calendars!
Hope to see you all around campus soon!
Warmly,

• Tuition covers 80 percent of the cost of a Maryvale education. Without your gifts, tuition would be significantly higher – putting the school out of reach for families who want an all girls, faith-based education for their daughters.
• The Maryvale Fund is the second largest revenue source behind tuition. The school relies on this fund to offset operating expenses, recruit and retain talented teachers and enhance the valuable education that transforms today’s learners into tomorrow’s leaders.
For more than70 years, Maryvale has given generations of girls the skills and confidence to learn, lead and succeed throughout the school day…and throughout life. Support the school that matters to all of us by making a gift to the Maryvale Fund today. Your gift matters. Here’s why: Make your gift to the Maryvale Fund today!

Dear Maryvale Friends,
My wife, Phyllis, and I were welcomed to the Maryvale community in 2010 when our daughter, Pearce, received her letter of acceptance. Pearce graduated in 2014 after four fabulous years of learning, leading and succeeding, but I’m still here.
First as a trustee heading up the Finance Committee and now as Board Chair, there’s a reason that I’ve hung around. The answer is simple: I believe in Maryvale
I am certain that many past parents and alumnae would agree when I say that Maryvale is experiencing one of the most exciting chapters in the school’s 72-year history!Under the dynamic leadership of President Tracey H. Ford and her talented team, interest in the school, enrollment and giving have skyrocketed
The Maryvale brand is strong — and gaining even more traction with each passing month.
The Maryvale Board of Trustees is taking very important steps to ensure that the school remains innovative and successful well into the future. I am thrilled to announce that we have nearly completed a yearlong Strategic Planning process
Many thanks to the parents, past parents, students, faculty, staff, alumnae and friends who participated in focus groups centered around the following key areas: Academic Excellence, Faith and Mission, Innovative Programming, School Culture, Stewardship of Resources and Student Life.
Through this process, nearly every aspect of the school was discussed and evaluated as the best course forward was charted. The Board of Trustees expects to vote on the Strategic Plan during its January meeting.
In the coming months, Tracey, her team and I look forward to sharing the details of the Strategic Plan and how you can be a part of Maryvale’s future success
Until then, I extend my sincere thanks to each of you for your role in making Maryvale what it is today.
Sincerely,

Job Title: Technology Coordinator/Teacher
Educational Background: B.A., Political Science, The Catholic University of America; MBA, Franciscan University of Steubenville
Family: Wife, Lynn
Hobbies: Walking, boating and watching a good movie
In your role, what do you teach?
“I teach AP Computer Science, Engineering through Robotics, Object Oriented Programming and Eighth Grade Technology, and I love every minute of it!”
During your brief time at Maryvale, you have made a positive impact – elevating the STEM program. What are you most proud of?
“I am most proud of the opportunities, scholarships and rewarding lives that abound today for young women who are interested in pursuing careers in technology and engineering. I also am most proud of our students, who have demonstrated that girls can compete with boys and thrive in the technological careers that our nation needs to be competitive in the world.”
What can we expect to see from the Maryvale technology program in the near future?
“The number of girls taking technology courses continues to grow each semester. In the future, I expect to see that number increase even more. I also have plans to integrate more field trips, competitions and guest speakers into the curriculum in an effort to provide opportunities that inspire our students to reach beyond themselves and explore different areas.”
What are your long-term goals for the program?
“One of my long-term goals is to position Maryvale as one of the top technology schools in the country.”
Your students are succeeding at every turn. Please offer some examples.
“I believe our students are so successful because they are reaching new heights and achieving their dreams. We were the only Catholic girls school in the country competing this year in NASA and MIT’s Zero Robotics Competition. This is a coding competition where schools compete to send their computer code to the International Space Station and control a bowling-ball size satellite in the cargo bay of the International Space Station. We competed last year at the U.S. Naval Academy in the state championships of the SeaPerch Underwater Robotics tournament, and we had a student accepted into Google’s coveted Computer Science Summer Institute in Boston. We also hosted a guest speaker from Google who spoke to our students about internship opportunities with top technology companies.
One thing that we’re doing in the classroom is experimenting with motion capture programming through an xBox Kinect sensor bar, which is something that is unbelievably awesome and challenging at the same time.”
What advice can you offer the student who thinks that she may not be successful with technology?
“One of my main goals as a Maryvale educator is to help our students discover their talents. I would tell that student, ‘You only learn what your talents are when you try new things.’ We all use technology today — so you might as well take a class and see if you like learning more about it!’”
Is there anything else that you would like to add?
“I love coming to Maryvale every day. Our students are excited about being in the classroom, and our administration values and fosters innovation. If you love technology, and can offer ways to help our students succeed, please contact me!”

Student Philosophy: “Never underestimate the importance and complexity of the developing Middle School brain. Now is the critical time to provide a stimulating, supportive educational environment balanced with opportunities for social, artistic, physical and spiritualgrowth. It’s where the seeds are planted for our future scientists, scholars, virtuosos and leaders. Spend time with girls of this age, and prepare to be amazed by their energy, humor, curiosity and unbridled joy in discovery.”

What you may not know: “One of my all-time favorite movies is ‘The Grinch’ with Jim Carrey.”
Student Philosophy: “I believe the Middle School years are opportunities for students to explore and discover the way that they learn best. We should encourage students to develop and maximize their strengths and abilities that will serve as a foundation for future growth. Students will be inspired to pursue excellence in every walk of life as they become tuned in with their God-given talents and gifts. As educators, we have the distinct honor of inspiring students to pursue excellence in everything they do; this is a life skill that will serve them well forever.”

Student Philosophy: “I attended Catholic School from the time I was in kindergarten through the 12th grade. Being a part of a faith-based environment during the most critical times of development is definitely what I’m most grateful for throughout my educational journey. What works for one student might not work for another, and that is O.K.! Every student has different strengths, and a big part of learning involves figuring out what your strengths are and how to use them to your advantage.”

However, God quickly brought me back to Catholic education. This experience opened my eyes to school administration and made me realize that my gifts are best suited to helping the youth. ‘Many are the plans of the human heart, but it is the decision of the LORD that endures (Proverbs 19:21).’”
Student Philosophy: “As educators, we are here to guide and mold the physical, intellectual and spiritual developmentof our students. A student-centered classroom that promotes peace and justice is so needed in today’s world. We must expose students to various opportunities but also help to build their confidence. Students are often called the leaders of tomorrow, but I believe they are the leaders of today.”

Student Philosophy: “As an educator, I see it as my job to help students meet their fullest potential by providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking and invites a sharing of ideas. Without putting significant resourcesinto educating our children, we put our country, culture and our society as a whole in jeopardy. Our children are the future leaders, employers, workers and teachers for the subsequent generation.”
Jessica Vitrano Randisi ’01 Dean of Students
Educational Background: M.A.,Teaching Secondary English, Notre Dame of Maryland University; B.A.,Theatre, Salisbury University; M.S.D.E. Advanced Professional Teaching Certificate in English

This will allow her to mature socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically. It is my desire to help students meet their fullest potential by providing a school that teaches respect, dignity and confidence. I believe that student development begins upon entry into Maryvale and continues until graduation. This includes classroom and extra-curricular activities, both of which are equally important to development.”

As collaborators with the students and parents, our job as educators is to help provide the best environment for the students to meet their full potential. Education is the tool that helps students develop not only academically, but socially and emotionally while discovering who they are. My goal as an educator is to help all students mature with dignity and confidence along their journey to success.”
Monica Graham Director of College Counseling

The Castle at Maryvale has enchanted students, prospective families and visitors for more than 70 years. Long before young girls in their school uniforms made the Castle their own, however, it was a home called Wickcliffe. Built in 1916 by Dr.Walter Wickes and his wife, Catherine Osbourne Young Hobart Wickes, the Green Spring Valley landmark recently celebrated its century mark. To commemorate the occasion, Gerry Brewster, great grandson of the Wickes, shared the storied past of Maryvale’s Castle at a special reception. Below is an excerpt of his remarks.

The United States was about to enter World War I, and the world was in a state of chaos. In the midst of this turmoil, my great grandparents Dr. and Mrs.Walter Wickes had a dream that life should go on and that they should build a home that was not only symbolic of American strength and prosperity, but also a home that was open for the community to enjoy. Our family is honored to be part of its history, a history that includes thousands of students that have gone through here in the 70-plus years that thiswonderful place has been your home.
Wickcliffe is a Medieval, Tudor-style castle, influenced by Warwick Castle in England. The stone was quarried right here at Bare Hills

on Falls Road. The contents were imported from other countries. There were 65 rooms; each of the 17 bedrooms had a private bath. The lamps at the front door have my great grandparents’ initials on them, COY and WFW, and their initials and wedding date are also on the front door lock. An elevator was put in when my great grandmother had a heart attack, there is a dumbwaiter, and the telephone number here was just “Towson 6.” That was it. There are plenty of hiding places, hidden panels, drop ceilings, secret doors and maybe even a hidden tunnel that may or may not have been used to transport alcohol during prohibition. It’s reportedthat Uncle Boy Wickes and some of his pals had a still here. I don’t know. There is a nice waterfall down in the woods, and I must confess that after my family sold the property, some of my friends and I came back here on occasion to hang out there. That wouldn’t work so well today. I recently stopped by to view the family photos in the Parlor room, and the security staff descended on me in about two seconds! In the children’s tower was a first floor breakfast room, second floor nursery, third floor gym and a rooftop garden. There was a vegetable garden with fresh vegetables served every day. Freshflowers were put out daily. There was a wine cellar and coal in the basement. In the early years, Wickcliffe was heated by coal, but it went on to become one of the first homes in the Valley to have electricity. There was a pond, which was taken out in the ’70s by a hurricane.

The Wickes’ philosophy was, if you have a place this big, it should be shared. This castle was shared with the community in many ways. Right here in the Great Hall, all the local children came for dancing class. On the tennis court, they came to learn tennis. On the pond, to skate. At the stables, to ride. So it was truly the community-gathering place. The Wickes loved to entertain. They especially enjoyed playing cards and backgammon and having drinks in the Parlor room, which now honors their memory with a wonderful photographic display.
It was reported in The Baltimore Sun that Wickcliffe was “the largest private residence in this part of the country” and “the largest home in the state of Maryland.” I went through the inventory of what was in the Castle at the time of my great grandmother’s death, and some of the things were pretty interesting: two pianos; one leopard skin; multiple animal heads; hundreds of books; valuable artwork; two suits of armor with shields, swords and spears; a grandfather’s clock; numerous oriental rugs; vast amounts of silver, china and crystal. This one really interested me, though—the gym. Our family was always very interested in sports, as is Maryvale, and with the number of students here, it has always impressed me how well Maryvale competes against other bigger schools, more often than not, beating them when you’re so outnumbered. How about your recent championships in Cross Country, Indoor Track, Track and Field, Badminton and Softball, and Emily Craig leading Maryvale to the championship title over 17 other schools in 95-degree heat just a few weeks ago! So, obviously, sports and physical activity are still valued in the Castle. But, the inventory in the gym at the time of my great grandmother’s death was this: 26 chairs, two of which were rocking chairs. That’s it! What kind of gym was that? Now I know why people live longer today. I also saw in the inventory the silverware. I didn’t know there were so many different types of spoons. They had coffee spoons, souvenir spoons, dessert, table, serving, ice cream, sugar, salt, teaspoons and salad spoons—371 itemized spoons. That seemed like a lot until I looked at the towels. They had 610 towels. That’s a lot of towels!
The staff: 17 full-time servants. Eleven of them worked in the house, the other six outdoors. I picked one year of the Census and looked up who lived here. There was a nurse from England, a butler from Italy, a housekeeper from Italy, a cook from Norway, a chauffeur from England, a cook from Sweden, another housekeeper from Italy, another from Ireland and a houseman from Germany. They also had gardeners, laundresses, butlers and stable hands. In fact, my Uncle Andre told me that the gardeners had trouble pronouncing his name and they called him “Laundry.” The butlers wore black tie at dinner, striped trousers and morning coats for formal lunches, and otherwise they wore black coats, white shirt and tie.So, it was a pretty fancy and expensive place.
Money is something that is always of interest, I guess, when you own a castle. When Christian Otto Young, our ancestor who really created all the money, died in 1906, his estate was then valued at $20 million. At the time, he was the second richest person in Chicago behind Marshall Field. When I came and spoke to the sixth grade class a few years ago and I said, “Girls, you know $20 million in 1906 was a lot of money,” one of the girls raised her hand and replied, “You know, Mr. Brewster, it still is.” Little did I know how much it really was—$20 million in 1906 would be about $40 billion today. I can assure you that my family is despondent that those numbers aren’t around any more. We are all, of course, most grateful for all that we do have.
The Wickes built the castle between 1914 and 1916 for $250,000. Thirty years later, our family sold this property of 182 acres on Green Spring Valley and Falls roads for $75,000. Great site and great price!
Walter Wickes was born in 1877. He graduated from St. John’s in Annapolis and went to the University of Maryland Medical School. In Chicago, he met my great grandmother, Catherine Osborne Young, who we called “Oma.” They were married in Chicago in the year 1908. They returned to Baltimore and set about starting a family and building this castle. Dr. Wickes had a lifelong interest in the sport of horse racing. He was also a warden at St. Thomas’ Church and died in 1960.
Mrs.Walter Wickes, Otto Young’s daughter, Catherine, used her good fortune to build Wickliffe. This is what the Chicago Examiner of 1903 said about Otto Young’s four daughters, “It is characteristic of all four of the daughters of the Young household to be gracious, generous and considerate.” In the years I have been coming to Maryvale, I have seen those same qualities in the students here. The students and the people who work here have been gracious, generous and considerate. The newspaper article also went on to say, “They are popular, unspoiled by wealth, girls with quick brains and big

hearts.” Again, I see the parallel with the girls at Maryvale here today.
Sure, there was good fortune, the family did well, but the important thing always was to give back to the community.Oma believed more strongly than anything else that if you have good fortune, you have an absolute obligation to give back to the community. At the time of her death, she was the chairwoman of the Executive Committee of the Women’s Board at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, was on the Women’s Board of the Hospital for Women which became G.B.M.C., a board member of the Happy Hills Convalescent Home for Children, a board member of the Children’s Aid Society of Baltimore County, president of the Mount Vernon Club, and raised money for the Gilman School, the Green Spring Hunt Land Co., the Baltimore County Public Schools and the Johns Hopkins Hospital where she founded the “Carry On” Shop. When she died, the Baltimore Sun reported that “for years she was one of this city’s most generous benefactors. She interested herself continuously in charitable work, usually anonymously and always without ostentation, and she was especially fond of aiding children’s charities.” A friend said, “She was the most generous woman imaginable, not only with her money but with her time and energy.” She taught her children and her family to give back, that public service is the most important thing you can do. This castle has represented giving back to the community for a century. Wickcliffe has been a great treasure for our family; it has been a great treasure for this school, and it has been a great treasure for this community. And with great privileges and great treasures comes great opportunities to serve others.
