Dear Friends, Because of Maryvale, miracles — small and great — continue to happen, as they have since the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur opened their school in the Castle of the Wickes’ former estate, in 1945. Since then, generations of talented, confident and caring young women emerged from this campus, determined and confident in their ability to lead in their community and beyond. Long before the current movements in support of advancement and equity for women, Maryvale graduates have been leading in business, health sciences, philanthropy and education. Perhaps no one better exemplified this than Sr. Catherine Phelps, SND, class of 1949 and trustee of Maryvale. At the time of her sudden death in June, Sr. Catherine remained at the helm of Trinity School, guiding it with a firm hand and huge heart, as she had done for 47 years. Sr. Catherine often referred to the Hallmarks of the SNDs as a living guide for the way she led her school and her life. Today, at Maryvale, in a time that is increasingly challenging to navigate, we turn to the Hallmarks to ground us — and uplift us — in our daily work of educating young women for life. I believe our adherence to the Hallmarks is one of the reasons we are experiencing unprecedented success at Maryvale. We opened the 2018-19 school year at capacity enrollment. Our Leadership Institute infuses leadership lessons in a defined curriculum for all students, grades six through 12. The confidence gained is paying off in numerous ways. During the 2017-18 school year, Maryvale’s Mock Trial Team advanced to the championship, eliminating competitor female, coed and male schools. Our students in the highly competitive Architecture, Construction and Engineering Mentoring Program swept the year, and scholarships, earning statewide recognition for their work on a proposed development concept for Towson Row. On Nov. 14, we celebrated as six members of the Class of 2019 signed National Letters of Intent to play Division I athletics at Arizona State University, Boston College, Boston University, UMBC, the University of Maryland and the University of Richmond. These seniors will soon be among our recent alumnae studying at highly competitive universities including Georgetown University, the University of Chicago, the University of Notre Dame, Villanova University and the United States Naval Academy. Just a few weeks ago, “Seussical” played to standing-room-only audiences at three performances. More than 80 singers and dancers, in grades six through 12, filled the theater with music, dance and high energy. And, students were just as active behind the scenes, utilizing the opportunities offered in this state-of-the-art venue. Yet, the truly miraculous moments do not always command a big stage. They remain, as they have since our founding, at our core. Deserving young women, whose families could not afford full tuition, are supported by scholarships and gifts from generous donors who believe in the power of education. Technology initiatives, funded by donors interested in providing girls with hands-on experience, open up new worlds of robots, drones and innovation. Science labs are upgraded so that every girl, beginning in our sixth grade, participates in labs, sparking interest in STEM careers. And, education does not take place only on campus. As we help shape global citizens, our girls build houses through Habitat for Humanity; as part of the Memory Project, they create portraits for children in third world countries; and, they hold to the Maryvale Way, grounding them in respect, dignity and inclusivity. None of this would be possible without philanthropy. The miracle of your gifts advances our mission. This past year saw a dramatic increase in giving to the school, bolstered by a resurgence in alumnae involvement and donations. Thank you to every person listed in our Annual Report. Message from the Board Chair Dear Maryvale Families, As an alumna who loves the school, I am thrilled to serve as Maryvale’s Board Chair. Since assuming this role on July 1, I have spent a lot of time on campus listening and learning — building on my work as a long-serving trustee. I am incredibly proud of what I observe each week: a hard-working, nimble Leadership Team with innovative ideas; a committed staff with an unmatched dedication to the institution; talented teachers who go the extra mile for their students; and joyful girls who are learning, leading and succeeding in every way.

The school remains committed to its faith identity and its affiliation with the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, who founded Maryvale in 1945. Multiple opportunities for prayer are offered daily. Liturgies take place regularly. And, service projects abound.

Perhaps what is most important, though, is the community’s commitment to what we call the Maryvale Way — a focus on respect, dignity and inclusivity. Maryvale welcomes its new Trustees Maryvale is grateful for the leadership of six new trustees. Already, these individuals have made a positive impact on the school community with their vast knowledge and professional experience. Paul J. Chew, CFA Chief Investment Officer, Brown Advisory Paul Chew, father of student Lauren ’21, serves as the chief investment officer for Brown Advisory. He is responsible for leading the firm’s internally managed investment strategies and its open-architecture and asset-allocation efforts. Under Paul’s leadership, the firm’s core equity and fixed income capabilities have grown substantially. He earned
a B.S. from Mount St. Mary’s University and his M.B.A. from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. Paul has a history of extensive community involvement as a former trustee at Jemicy School, and a member of the Board of Directors for the Baltimore Life Companies and St. Agnes Hospital.
John S. Halaby, Sr. Head of Financial Institutions Group, T. Rowe Price John Halaby has spent almost two decades at T. Rowe Price. During the recent reorganization of the mutual fund company, John was promoted to head of the financial institutions group. In his current role, he is responsible for deepening T. Rowe’s partnerships with financial institutions, home offices and advisors. A Cornell University alumnus, John also has extensive board experience and currently
serves as a trustee for Loyola Blakefield. John has previously served as a chair of the Maryvale Bull & Oyster Roast and member of the school’s Capital Campaign Steering Committee. He and his wife, Jessy, are the proud parents of two children. Their daughter, Gabby, graduated from Maryvale in 2017 and attends the University of Chicago.
Nicole R. Onorato Hewitt, Esq. ’92 Managing Member, HWK Law Group LLC Nicole R. Onorato Hewitt, Esq. ’92 is a co-founding member of HWK Law Group, practicing in the area of estate planning and estate administration, elder law and business planning. Prior to co-founding HWK Law Group, Nicole served as a senior tax associate with two big-five accounting firms, an associate with a large Baltimore law firm and general counsel as well as an executive director to a national mortgage lender/broker. Nicole, who serves
on the President’s Advisory Council at Maryvale, has a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Loyola University of Maryland, a J.D. from the University of Baltimore School of Law and an LL.M. in Taxation from the Georgetown University School of Law. She and her husband, Russ, have three children. Their daughter, Kenley, will be a third generation Maryvale alumna when she graduates in 2020.
Elizabeth Boddiford Klein ’08 Financial Advisor, Boddiford-Koras Group of Morgan Stanley Elizabeth Boddiford Klein ’08 is a financial advisor for the Boddiford-Koras Group at Morgan Stanley. Prior to joining Morgan Stanley, Elizabeth held the position of a channel planning analyst for Prometric. She earned a bachelor’s degree in International Global Studies and International Development from Sewanee: The University of the South.
Prior to joining Maryvale’s Board of Trustees, Elizabeth served as treasurer of the Maryvale Alumnae Association Board. She remains engaged in many aspects of the school. In addition to her alumnae board leadership role, she also was a repeat sponsor for several Maryvale events that she helped to plan.
Sr. Patricia Loome, SNDdeN ’62 Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur Representative Sr. Patricia Loome, SNDdeN ‘62 has extensive experience as both a principal and vice principal on the secondary level in the United States as well as Kenya. Prior to her recent retirement, Sr. Patricia served as the vice president for mission as well as chair of the Clinical Ethics Committee for St. Mary’s Healthcare System in Athens, Ga. She also served on the Community Advisory Board in the College of Public Health at the University of Georgia and mentored numerous graduate students in the field of Community
Benefit. Sr. Patricia was instrumental in founding the Athens Health Network, an umbrella organization that serves as a safety net for people who need health care. She also played an integral role on the Board of the Donovan Catholic High School in Athens, Ga. Sr. Patricia received her undergraduate degree from Trinity College and a master’s degree in African Studies from Duquesne University. She received a second master’s degree in Systematic Theology from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, Ca.
Claire Mosmiller Moore ’65 Claire Mosmiller Moore ’65 recently retired from her role as the vice president of student affairs at Stevenson University. During her long tenure at Stevenson (formerly Villa Julie College), Claire played a critical role in many institutional changes, including the inauguration of Residence Life on campus and the creation of the Wellness Center. She also
proudly served as interim president after President Emeritus Kevin J. Manning retired earlier than anticipated. Claire, who is a graduate of Villa Julie College, currently serves as a member of the President’s Advisory Council at Maryvale.

Learn. From having fun with Physics to promoting the Performing Arts, faculty member Nathan Scavilla is helping Maryvale girls learn at every turn. In your role as a member of both the Science and Performing Arts departments at Maryvale, what do you teach/direct? “In the Science Department, I teach all levels of Physics (AP Physics I, AP Physics C—Mechanics and AP Physics C—Electricity and Magnetism, Accelerated Physics and College Preparatory Chemistry). In the Performing Arts Department, I teach the Musical Theatre Class, conduct the Orchestra Class and lead the Maryvale ‘Jazz Cats’ Ensemble. I also teach the vocals and conduct the pit orchestra for the school musicals.” Working in both STEM and the Performing Arts highlights an interesting juxtaposition of subjects. When and how did you develop your passion for Physics as well as the Performing Arts? “I knew I wanted to teach when I was in high school! My Physics teacher at Mt. St. Joseph High School, Mr. Tom Hughes (Physics teacher for 45 years), is the reason that I majored in Physics. He was my favorite teacher at the Mount. He made Physics so easy to learn, and I looked up to him as a mentor. As an AP Physics student my senior year, Tom would have me teach the Honors Physics students who missed lectures throughout the week so that I was able to practice teaching under his guidance. From that moment on, I was hooked! Teaching was meant to be one of my passions in life. In regard to music, I started taking piano classes when I was in second grade. I loved it! I also started reading many books and trying different styles of music. I really got into jazz. My grandfather played saxophone and 6 / MESSENGER
clarinet in a big band that played for dances when he was a kid. He was a major influence in my love of music. In the fourth grade, I learned trumpet and trombone. In the sixth grade, I learned drums and tuba. Then, in the eighth grade, I picked up saxophone and clarinet (like Pop). In high school like many people, I didn’t make the basketball team. So, I got more involved with band and theater. I was performing in shows and playing in the pit orchestras that accompanied the shows. In fact, Maryvale’s Dean of Students, Jessica Vitrano Randisi ’01, directed the production of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ at Seton Keough during my senior year! In college, I started directing music for local community/professional theaters. I ended up at Toby’s Dinner Theatre in Columbia, where I have been playing and conducting since 2013. Nowadays, I consider myself less of a trombone player and more of a keyboard conductor/synth player! I love being able to utilize both my passions for music and Physics here at Maryvale. Seeing the girls excel in both of these fields is so rewarding for me as an educator!” As you enter your second year at Maryvale, you have already immensely expanded the students’ interest in Physics. Can you elaborate on this? “I have to hand it to my students. The students who I taught last year told me that they told so many of the other students that Physics is a hard subject, but I make it enjoyable for them. I told Dr. Shin during my interview that I wanted to come to Maryvale to inspire the future engineers, doctors and scientists of the next generation…especially females. So many of the girls that I have tutored in the past have lacked confidence for doing Physics. I wanted to change that. Anyone can learn Physics, you just have to find the right way to convey the topic…and be a patient person.” Additionally, Maryvale’s musical opportunities have significantly increased and improved since your debut. What are your short-term and/or long-term goals for the program? “In the short-term, I want to build on what already existed, such as expanding the Orchestra to include Middle School students, the busiest of students and athletes! I also want to get the girls excited about making music.

So, that sort of came true through my teaching.”
In the long-term, I would love to see a whole music wing in the Performing Arts building where our other music teachers, Ms. Amanda Polanowski and Mrs. Ellen Manuel-Smith, and I can continue to spread our love of music education. I would also love to have a pep band that can play at games and pep rallies throughout the year.” What do you enjoy most about your involvement with both the academics and co-curricular activities at Maryvale? “The people. The community is amazing. I preface all of my doings at Maryvale with this thought in my head, ‘It’s all for the girls.’ I am so fortunate to have amazing, bright, hard-working and tenacious students. I also love the administrators, faculty and staff. ALL of the admins check in with me regularly, and ask what we can do to make Maryvale better. Some members of the faculty have become my closest friends. I don’t just enjoy my involvement here at Maryvale, I love it!” What do you consider to be your greatest achievement in your professional career? “Two words: My students. They are the ones going off to amazing schools such as Delaware, MIT or Virginia Tech. They are the ones becoming doctors, engineers and scientists, or artists. They are the ones who keep in touch with me and let me know how they are doing in life. I hope to be here long enough to eventually hear, ‘Mr. Scavilla, you taught my mom!’” What are some of your favorite teaching tips and tricks that you utilize in the classroom or in the theater? “Entertainment. You have to keep the students entertained to keep them focused in class. Fortunately, my ‘absent-mindedness’ came with becoming a Physics teacher, so that keeps them regularly entertained. In the theater, I tell them to laugh off their mistakes. Yes, we all have played the really wrong note in band. Don’t dwell in the past, learn from it!” What advice would you offer a student who may struggle with the sciences or is afraid to showcase her musical abilities? “Don’t be afraid to ask for help. I believe the wise, old wizard, Albus Dumbledore told Harry Potter, ‘Help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who deserve it.’ I would edit that statement to say, ‘Help will always be given at Maryvale to those who seek it.’ As teachers, we are here to help the students grow and succeed, whether it be learning a Physics concept or getting them to sing notes they never knew they could sing!” Is there anything else that you would like to add? “Did I mention that I love it here? I feel like I never work a day in my life because of how happy I am here. Maryvale has become a second home to me.” ANNUAL REPORT / 7

The Maryvale Leadership Institute For more than 70 years, Maryvale has molded dedicated learners into dynamic leaders. Our accomplished alumnae sit at the helm of companies, head nonprofits, direct boards and oversee schools. That’s because they developed the skills and the confidence to lead at a young age during their formative years at Maryvale. In 2014, at the urging of the President’s Advisory Council, Maryvale took its longstanding leadership initiatives to a new level, launching the Leadership Institute. The bold move made Maryvale the first all girls’ school in the region to offer such an impressive lineup of leadership offerings through its one-of-a-kind signature program. Since debuting the Institute, the school continues to expand its offerings, carefully crafting innovative classes and delivering cutting-edge opportunities to provide girls with the skills needed in our ever-changing world. LUTHERVILLE – As director of Maryvale Preparatory School’s Leadership Institute, Mary Ellen Fise is dedicated to developing innovative methods that will form the lions of society. The institute, entering its fifth year, sports a new addition for the 2018-19 school year: the Leadership Certificate Program. According to Maryvale, it is the first independent all-girls’ school in the Baltimore area with such a program. Maryvale’s administration consulted with its network of leaders for new ways to empower its students, thinking that it might result in a new course offering. The response was consistent: beyond the classroom, students need more training and experience. That, Fise said, resulted in the Leadership Certificate Program, where select students will complete a set of in-depth coursework, at least 30 leadership service hours, a leadership portfolio and a graduate interview. Each student will have a mentor.

Maryvale’s signature Leadership Institute continues to expand and offer unique opportunities for students and alumnae. Last school year, through the creation of a Senior Class Speaker Series, award-winning novelist Imbolo Mbue, author of “Behold the Dreamers,” addressed students, faculty and staff, alumnae and guests during an interactive discussion in McCarthy Theater.
Maryvale’s Indoor Track & Field team captured its third consecutive IAAM A Conference Championship title in January 2018 after displaying a dominating performance and posting 146 points. This title marks the Maryvale Athletic Department’s 11th championship since the fall of 2015. Go Lions!

Maryvale’s Performing Arts Department added a third show specifically for Middle School students to its exciting annual lineup of theatrical productions. Our talented actresses and crewmembers dazzled the audience on two separate occasions with their performance of, “The Lion King, Jr.” And, coming to McCarthy Theater in February 2019…“Mulan, Jr.!”
After a year of presenting convincing arguments and demonstrating its legal vigilance, Maryvale’s Mock Trial team notched a key semifinal win, making its first-ever appearance in the championship match in March 2018 at the Baltimore County Circuit Courthouse in Towson. The girls concluded their season as the runner-up. Well done to all of the team members on a remarkable group effort.

Katie took the Maryvale Athletic Department by storm as a three-sport athlete having lettered in soccer, basketball and lacrosse. As a senior captain, Katie helped lead the Lions to its first ever IAAM A Conference lacrosse championship under the direction of Maryvale Athletic Hall of Fame member, Erin Stewart Howland of the Class of 1989. A three-time IAAM all-star and two-time U.S. Lacrosse Greater Baltimore All-American, Katie racked up numerous accolades as a high school lacrosse player, including All-Metro Player of the Year, All-Baltimore City and County Player of the Year and Towson Times Co-Player of the Year, to name a few.
During her high school days at Maryvale, Lauren played field hockey and lacrosse, and ran track and field. While Lauren earned varsity letters and awards in her other sports, her true calling was the track. Lauren, an inaugural member of Maryvale’s Indoor Track & Field team, helped lay the foundation for what Maryvale’s running program has flourished into today. She not only competed, but also dominated in the 55, 300 and 500-meter dashes as well as the four by one-and-a-half-meter relay and the four by four-hundred-meter relay. Between Lauren’s junior and senior years, she captured eight medals during the IAAM Indoor Track Championships — two gold, three silver and three bronze. She also was twice named Maryvale’s Most Valuable Runner.
Katie continued her remarkable lacrosse career at Duke University, where she holds the records in all-time career points and goals. Katie, an undeniable standout on the Blue Devil attack unit, received the 2005 Tewaaraton Award as the National Player of the Year and was a threetime IWLCA and two-time Inside Lacrosse All-American. She was twice voted the ACC Player of the Year and earned ACC Tournament MVP honors in 2005, when the Blue Devils were crowned ACC Champions, and ACC Rookie of the Year recognition in 2003. Following college, Katie served as an integral member of the U.S. Women’s World Cup team for six years and helped lead the team to a World Cup Championship in 2009. Katie continued to grow the game as an assistant lacrosse coach at the University of Maryland, Loyola University Maryland, where she helped the Greyhounds win two Big East Championships, and Columbia University between 2008 and 2014. Katie resides in Indianapolis, where she coached two seasons at Cathedral High School and won two Indiana State Championships. She now serves as President and CEO of Chrest Lacrosse Ventures, offering private and group training to athletes of all ages.

But, Lauren’s success didn’t slow down after Maryvale. She went on to Gettysburg College, where she quickly climbed into a leadership role both in her running and as a two-time captain. From 2003 to 2006, Lauren racked up 24 medals across a variety of events between her indoor and outdoor track and field championship appearances. To this day, Lauren holds the record for the fastest time in the 55-meter dash, 200-meter dash and 800-meter dash relay for Gettysburg’s indoor track and field program as well as eighteen Top-10 records between the indoor and outdoor track and field programs. Lauren helped lead her outdoor track and field team to consecutive Centennial Conference Championships in 2003 and 2004. And, during her senior year, she was presented with the prestigious Centennial Conference Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Most Outstanding Performer award in recognition of her exceptional achievements. Today, Lauren implements her gold-medal mentality as a Senior Business Analyst for T. Rowe Price, where she has worked for more than a decade.

Following her impressive high school career, Maeve became a shutdown defender for the University of Maryland Women’s Lacrosse team. In her four years, the Terps posted a 70-15 record and made four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. As a senior, Maeve helped lead the team to an Atlantic Coast Conference championship and a berth in the NCAA Final Four. She also served as the head of the Maryland Women’s Lacrosse leadership team.
Heather Klink ‘84 While at Maryvale, Heather was a top player on the field hockey, basketball and lacrosse teams. But, don’t let Heather’s warm and humble demeanor fool you. She was a competitive athlete who tallied a lot of points to lead her teams to victory. Upon graduating from Maryvale, Heather became a two-sport standout in field hockey and women’s lacrosse during her career at Johns Hopkins University. A captain in her junior and senior years, as well as a fierce midfielder, Heather helped elevate the women’s lacrosse program to national prominence as she guided the Blue Jays to a 27-9 record in her last two years and back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament. As a result of her undeniable efforts, she garnered First Team All-American honors in each of those years, too. Heather was the first women’s lacrosse player in Hopkins history to earn IWLCA First Team All-American honors, and she remains one of just five Blue Jay lacrosse players who are three-time All-Americans. She also remains one of two three-time First Team All-MAC and one of six three-time First Team All-Conference athletes in program history.
After her playing days, Maeve began her coaching career at Drexel University, where she also earned her Master’s Degree in Education. She then moved back to Maryland and assumed the role as the general assistant for University of Maryland Athletics. Maeve also shared her wealth of knowledge with the younger generations at McDonogh School, where she served as the coach for JV field hockey, JV basketball and Middle School lacrosse. When Maeve was not coaching, she was learning and managing the back-end operations as a lacrosse tournament coordinator and camp director. Maeve is now helping grow the sport of lacrosse in the Midwest as the director of operations for the University of Michigan Women’s Lacrosse program.
Further, as a field hockey player, Heather scored 15 goals and added 15 assists in her career and set a school record in 1987 with nine assists for a single season. She currently ranks 16th in the Blue Jays record book for all-time assists. After earning her undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University, Heather graduated cum laude from the University of Baltimore School of Law. Heather puts her law degree to great use as the Deputy General Counsel at FTI Consulting. In 1999, Heather was inducted into the Johns Hopkins University Hall of Fame for both lacrosse and field hockey in recognition of her noteworthy athletic accomplishments. And now, we welcome her into Maryvale’s.
Megan Huether Nicotra ‘02 A top three-sport athlete at Maryvale, Megan earned 12 varsity letters as a Lion for soccer, basketball and lacrosse. As a basketball player, she was a three-time All-IAAM Conference athlete and respected captain during her senior year. While Megan exceled in all of her trades, she is most touted for her exceptional abilities as a lacrosse goalkeeper, which was quickly recognized during her career at Maryvale. With Megan at the forefront of the defensive unit, Maryvale earned its first IAAM conference championship in 2002. Megan was twice named an All-American, All-Metro, All-City and County team and All-IAAM Conference selection in addition to being named the 2002 Towson Times Co-Player of the Year.

Megan continued to soar as a Duke Blue Devil with fellow classmate Katie Chrest Erbe, having started in every game of her four-year campaign for a total of 79 career games played. She was named the IWLCA Goalie of the Year as a junior after leading the Blue Devils to the program’s first ACC Tournament title and a trip to the NCAA semifinals. A 2005 ACC All-Tournament team selection and two-time ACC AllConference selection, Megan, a senior captain, helped Duke earn another national semifinal appearance during her final collegiate season and appeared on the Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List.

Maeve was presented with the field hockey team hustle award as a junior and the basketball team defensive MVP award as a senior. Also during her senior year, Maeve earned the

Megan also thrived at the international level of lacrosse. She was selected to the U.S. Women’s National Team in 2008 and went on to help the U.S. capture gold medals at the 2009 and 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cups. Following her collegiate career, Megan volunteered her time and talents as an assistant coach at the College of William & Mary while she was in graduate school for community counseling. She also has coached at the collegiate level for the United States Naval Academy as well as at the high school level for Garrison Forest School and St. Paul’s School for Girls, where she currently serves as the goalie coach. Megan continues to influence future generations of lacrosse players, especially goalkeepers, as the owner and director of Gold Medal Lacrosse & Goalkeeping as well as the co-owner of Between the Pipes. Megan was inducted earlier this year into the Greater Baltimore Chapter of the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame. We are excited to welcome her into Maryvale’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
Marty Voelkel-Hanssen ‘75 Marty was a force to be reckoned with both on the field and on the court as a member of Maryvale’s varsity field hockey, basketball and lacrosse teams. A multi-letter athlete, Marty had a competitive edge that propelled her ahead of any opponent that she faced. Her technique and talents were high caliber thanks to the instrumental coaching of Anne McCloskey. Marty also utilized her leadership qualities off the field as a member of Maryvale’s student council during her senior year. Marty pursued her lacrosse career at the University of Maryland, where she helped pave the way for this now prominent national championshipwinning program.
Carol Bohager Schreiber ‘62 When Carol was a student at Maryvale, she shined in every sport that she played, which included varsity field hockey, varsity basketball and varsity lacrosse. She was often regarded as the most talented athlete in the school, and to most, she was known to be a natural at anything that she pursued. Not only was she a phenomenal athlete on the field or court, but she also was a tremendous teammate and supporter who always encouraged others. Her attitude was always one of fairness, good humor and hard work, which her teammates quickly recognized and appreciated. Without hesitation, Carol was voted captain in each of her respective sports as well as president of the Athletic Association.
Marty’s notable qualities that she developed through her athletic tenure served as the cornerstone for her professional career. Marty graduated from the University of Maryland in 1979, and after graduating from American University’s Washington College of Law, she joined the Law Office of Peter G. Angelos, where she provided legal services for those involved with a variety of asbestos-related and personal injury cases. Today, Marty serves as the principal of her own law firm as she represents clients in family law matters. Marty also has served as a member of many organizations, including Maryvale’s Board of Trustees, throughout Baltimore during the past 20 years.
“Carol was an outstanding athlete and leader. She has always been and enthusiastic supporter of Maryvale and exemplifies the ideals of her school,” wrote one of Carol’s classmates from Maryvale. Carol went on to attend Villa Julie College, now Stevenson University, where she played field hockey and basketball, and served as a captain. After Carol graduated from Villa Julie, she served as an assistant to Anne McCloskey, Maryvale’s beloved athletic director, coach, teacher and mentor from 1961 to 1975, and worked at her summer field hockey and lacrosse camps for several years. After many summers of hard work, Carol was approached by Maryvale’s Sister Superior Genevieve Mary, who introduced Carol to Sigfreid Gerstung, who needed help starting a new athletic facility in Bare Hills called “InterSport.” Carol helped him develop “InterSport,” and under her incredible leadership and expertise, it became a phenomenal enterprise. Carol lives in Germany with her husband Kurt, who was an athletic instructor at the University of Munich.

Coach Jim McCoach Coach Jim McCoach had a passion for running like no other. But, what did he love more than running itself? Coaching. Jim joined Maryvale’s coaching staff in 2001 as the head cross country coach after closing the book on a banner career at Calvert Hall, which won seven Maryland Scholastic Association and Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association championships under his direction. After his debut year at Maryvale, the Baltimore Sun honored Jim as the Coach of the Year for his exceptional leadership and development of the Lion’s running program. It is customary that first-year programs usually struggle before achieving success. However, this was not the case for Coach McCoach. At the time, No. 10 Maryvale won two invitationals — Greenspring Valley and Lake Forest— in its first season of Varsity cross country. Additionally, the ferocious, determined Lions defeated Notre Dame Prep and Mount
de Sales, two IAAM powerhouses, in conference dual meets. The Lions won every IAAM meet except against No. 3 Bryn Mawr. Jim also guided Maryvale’s indoor track team to the regular-season title, and molded a squad that was composed of four freshmen, two sophomores and one senior. Between Maryvale, Calvert Hall and other area schools, Jim coached more than 100 seasons of varsity sports. Jim passed away in August 2006, but his legacy will live on forever. He impacted the lives of many who all speak so highly of him as a mentor, coach and friend. He laid the groundwork for what Maryvale’s cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field teams have grown into today. Maryvale’s six IAAM A Conference championship titles earned since the fall of 2015 speak for themselves. Jim has been inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at Kenwood High School, where he attended, and Dundalk High School, where he coached. And, now, it is a privilege to welcome him into Maryvale’s.
Maryvale’s Championship Basketball Teams from 1984-1988 It was between 1984-1988 that Maryvale held the longest winning streak in the state of Maryland, with 53 consecutive games. The streak began in the middle of the 1984-85 season, but was snapped midway through the 87- 88 season. However, that didn’t stop the Lions from capturing the AIS championship during each of those four years. Under the direction of Coach Desales “Dee” Linton ’75 from 1984 to 1985 and Coach Barbara Reahl Kasun from 1985 to 1988, the Lions boasted some impressive scores, often beating their opponents by more than 30, and sometimes 40, points. The members of these teams spread both pride and honor throughout the entire school and brought everyone together as a community. These women spent countless hours in the gym practicing their plays and fine-tuning their skills, which was clearly evident in every contest that they faced. We honor the members of these teams not only for their extraordinary performances on the court, but also for their inspiring legacy of true teamwork. Maryvale proudly continues to host numerous events that have bonded our community for nearly three decades. Message from the Assistant Head of School for Advancement Dear Maryvale Friends, Maryvale experienced another record-breaking fundraising season for the year ended June 30, 2018 thanks to the generosity of our donors. Whether you were a first-time contributor or have made Maryvale a philanthropic priority for decades, please know that your support continues to make a difference in the lives of our students. As you will see in the pages ahead, Maryvale — once again — surpassed its year-over-year Annual Fund collections, finishing fiscal year 2018 with close to $780,000. That represents a 70 percent increase in the amount raised for our Annual Fund since fiscal year 2014. The Annual Fund, typically the second largest revenue source behind tuition, is critical to the school’s financial health. We are grateful to our volunteer organizations that contributed to the Annual Fund’s success. The Alumnae Association, Parents’ Association and Sports Boosters include an army of dedicated volunteers who plan, lead and execute our key fundraising events: the Bull & Oyster Roast, Christmas Shops, Golf Classic and Lions’ Charge 5K & 1-Mile Dash. In addition to the growth in Maryvale’s Annual Fund, I am exceptionally proud to report that overall collections doubled year over year, with $2.2 million raised during FY18. That represents an increase from $1.07 million last fiscal year. The jump in overall collections is attributed to early gifts made toward the “quiet phase” of a future capital campaign. Your gifts — whether directed to the “quiet phase” of the campaign, the Annual Fund, endowment or another area — are changing outcomes for girls in meaningful ways. As a result of your generosity, Maryvale students are learning, leading and succeeding every day. Their successes are measured in strong Advanced Placement exam scores, award-winning theater performances, multiple athletic championships, leadership accolades, stellar service projects, internship placements at high-powered companies and college acceptances to distinguished institutions such as the United States Naval Academy, Georgetown University and the University of Chicago just to name a few. Perhaps the greatest success, however, is one that eludes all metrics but is apparent in our daily interactions with our incredible students. The faith in God and in herself that each girl gains during her time at Maryvale as she is educated in the Hallmarks of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur provides confidence, compassion, joy and— often—an inner peace that serves her well for life.
