Erinn McCarthy Humanities Hall is dedicated and open. The building was named for beloved student Erinn McCarthy, Class of 2010, who died after a battle with cancer when she was a freshman at Maryvale. McCarthy Hall houses a theater, classrooms, digital media lab, music room, and gallery space for visual art displays and various school community gatherings.

2019

Due to the generosity of a few benefactors, Maryvale launched several vitally needed projects during summer 2019, designed to significantly enhance student learning and campus life. The following renovations to the Castle and Locker Room occurred: • E nhanced the Castle’s learning spaces, including a new Leadership Lab and Innovation and Tech Lab, home to the Center for Leadership and Innovation.

• C onverted the Castle’s Great Hall and Library Classroom for use by all students.

• E nhanced learning spaces for the St. Julie Billiart Program and all students, including the addition of a new Academic Resource Center and Testing Center for on-site standardized testing and extended time testing.

• R enovated the Locker Room, including a complete overhaul of space as well as the addition of a Classroom/Team Room.

2020 Tracey H. Ford becomes Maryvale’s first lay leader, serving as President.

2013

APRIL – New fields and track are dedicated, becoming home to numerous IAAM Championship teams.

Maryvale celebrates 75 years since its founding on September 9. COVID-19 causes spring classes and year-end activities to move to virtual format.

Graduation for the Class of 2020 was moved from its original date in spring 2020 to July 31.

Maryvale reopens in the fall in a hybrid fashion for the 2020-2021 school year, welcoming students, faculty and staff back to campus as the COVID-19 pandemic persists, forcing school administrators to reimagine academic learning and Maryvale traditions.

2014

The Leadership Institute formally launched. Maryvale becomes the first all girls’ school in the region to offer such an impressive lineup of leadership offerings through its one-of-a-kind signature program.

EDUCATING YOUNG WOMEN FOR LIFE

The mission and spirit of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur is flourishing at Maryvale Preparatory School, with lay teachers and leadership at the helm for nearly two decades.

Ensuring that the ministry of educating young women for life grows, thrives and continues in the spirit of St. Julie Billiart remains paramount at Maryvale, said Sister of Notre Dame de Namur Patricia Loome ’62, a member of Maryvale’s Board of Trustees.

At Maryvale, the ministry began in 1945 when the Baltimore Province of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur purchased the 183-acre estate, Wickcliffe Castle, for use as a Catholic girls’ boarding school.

The school, Trinity College Preparatory School, Maryvale, opened later that year with 12 boarding and eight day students, with nearly all grades, 1-12, represented.

Sixty-one years later, in 2006, Maryvale became independently incorporated under its own ownership and governance by the Board of Trustees. Maryvale retains its affiliation with the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur as part of a Religious Affiliation Agreement.

The motivation to sell Maryvale was, in part, to ensure that the ministry of educating young women in the Catholic tradition continued, Sister Patricia said.

“That is what’s really important and why we have an Affiliation Agreement,” she said. “The quality of the people hired, the Head of School—to help them to understand the mission.”

Sister Patricia recalls that when she was a Maryvale student, she liked the presence of the sisters in the school. She had already been considering her vocation and was influenced to join the order by the legacy of St. Julie Billiart.

“One of the sisters, when I was in the library one day, said ‘have you ever read this book?’ and she handed me a book about St. Julie,” Sister Patricia said. “I was very impressed by what she had done in her life. It got me thinking more seriously. It was not a decision that I made quickly.”

It was only three years after Sister Patricia graduated from Maryvale that she professed her first vows. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history from what is now Trinity Washington University in Washington, D.C., a master’s degree in African studies from Duquesne University and a master’s degree in theology with a concentration in culture and theology from Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, Ca. Her mission work as a sister is extensive and has taken her all over the globe, including 20 years in Kenya where she served from 1972 to 1992 as a teacher and then headmistress at a high school. Her service also included helping to build a school in Kenya and establishing another school.

After returning to the United States in the 1990s, Sister Patricia’s service then included a tenure in a health care system, an experience that she says she loved. Today, Sister Patricia is a member of the leadership team for the Ohio Province of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.

While she can’t point to one mission as her favorite, Sister Patricia describes her time in Kenya as “a life-altering experience.”

She fondly recalls the decades that she has spent in education.

“I’ve been in high school education so much, I like high school kids,” Sister Patricia said. “I think I know most of their tricks. That’s another interest for me, being on a school board.”

Maryvale is fortunate to have Sister Patricia as one of three Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur who currently serve as SND representatives on the Board of Trustees.

“...it’s important that people recognize the basic goodness of one another.”

In addition to having Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur representatives on the Board of Trustees, another way that Maryvale students experience the presence of the sisters and connect with the women religious is at the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur Student Leadership Conference.

Kalea Selmon, Maryvale’s Director of Diversity and Inclusion, has served as a co-leader of the conference since its inception in 2016. The conference, which meets at Emmanuel College in Boston, was not held in 2020 due to COVID-19.

At the conference, Maryvale students join their peers from other SND schools across the U.S., interact with the sisters and learn the history of the religious order.

“It has really been a joy for the students to see these women, not as these other worldly people,” Selmon said. “They’re having meals with them, staying in the same dorms. They (the sisters) are super engaged with the students. Being able to have those connections — it’s amazing. These students are their living legacy.”

“It’s important to us not just that we be remembered, but that the spirit of the community of St. Julie is remembered,” Sister Edithann said. “We think it’s so valuable that it be continued. The school carries forth the message, the spirit of St. Julie in their efforts to embrace the hallmarks of a SND learning community.”

Sister Edithann describes St. Julie as a woman for all seasons, having lived through extraordinary turmoil — the French Revolution — while establishing the religious order.

“The kind of courage that she generated is so important for young women,” Sister Edithann said. “St. Julie’s profound belief in the goodness of God and the goodness of other people, it’s important that people recognize the basic goodness of one another.”

Sister Patricia agrees.

“It’s very important for the students to understand the charism of St. Julie and the spirit of a Notre Dame school and what they are being prepared for,” she said. “In my opinion, Maryvale is doing a great job.”

Hallmarks of a Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur Learning Community We proclaim by our lives, even more than by our words, that God is good.

We embrace the gift of diversity.

We create community among those with whom we work and with those we serve.

We develop holistic learning communities which educate for life.

Nearly 25 years ago, biological anthropologist Dr. Karen O’Neil made the decision to stop doing research in her field and instead teach, imparting her passion for science in the next generation of learners.

“My reason that I came here was to get girls excited about science,” said Dr. O’Neil, or Dr. O, as she is known. “That’s one of the reasons I stopped doing research.”

Dr. O arrived at Maryvale in 1998. To say that she has achieved her goal of exciting girls about science is an understatement. She has impacted hundreds, or perhaps thousands, of students during her 23-year teaching career.

And even after she retires this summer, at the end of the 2020-2021 school year, her legacy will live on.

In the past few years, the electives that Dr. O teaches, which include forensic science and biological anthropology, have grown in popularity. These courses have become so popular, in fact, that she teaches about a third of Maryvale’s Upper School.

Like Dr. O, a number of her former students have pursued STEAM-related (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) majors in college and careers. Those students include Meghan Maguire Thon ‘03, who said that she pursued a STEAM career because of Dr. O. Maguire Thon earned a bachelor’s degree in biology with minors in Spanish, Biostatistics and dance from Ursinus College, a master’s degree in biomedical sciences from Edinburgh Napier University and a Ph.D. in Endocrinology and Reproductive Physiology from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

“It is all because of Dr. O,” Maguire Thon said.

She remembers that as a child she would do experiments after baking with her mom, Marlene Maguire, an Administrative Assistant at Maryvale.

Legendary retires, inspiring lifelong learners

“There’s been an increase in the number of girls interested (in science),” Dr. O said. “I got a lot interested in forensics and anthropology. I warn them that there’s no money in anthropology.”

Dr. O earned a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and Russian from the State University of New York at Oswego and a master’s degree in biological anthropology and a Ph.D. in biological anthropology, both from the University of Illinois.

“She would let me play in the kitchen,” Maguire Thon said.

However, it was Dr. O’s freshman biology class that further sparked Maguire Thon’s interest in science.

She remembers being in that class and asking Dr. O a question about telomeres, the endcaps to our DNA. She recalls that Dr. O said ‘Oh, I don’t know. Let’s go look it up.’

“At that point it was like an ‘ah ha’ moment,” Maguire Thon said. “I realized that our textbooks weren’t the be-all end-all. There was research that people were doing. We don’t know everything. I wanted to be one of the people doing the research to put the information in textbooks for people to learn.

“Everything else had been presented up to that point as clear cut, this is the way it is, this is how it happened in the past,” Maguire Thon said. “Then for Dr. O to say ‘oh, that’s an interesting scientific question,’ I realized that I could come up with interesting questions, too. From then on I knew that I wanted to stay in biology.”

At Maryvale, Maguire Thon also took Dr. O’s Advanced Placement biology class.

“She gave it the feeling more of a discussion,” Maguire Thon said. “She made it feel less like memorization and more like understanding topics and how things work, rather than being able to list off facts. You still learned the facts, but you had this wider view of how it fit together.”

Maguire Thon noted the way Dr. O structures her classes like graduate-level courses.

“That’s the way a lot of graduate level classes are taught, pushing you to think about topics as a whole,” Maguire Thon said. “For me, I found it a lot more enjoyable, and I think that’s why I was really drawn to science.

Grant said her colleague has impacted the entire Maryvale community – students, faculty and staff.

“They’re interrelated,” she said, “because of the different things she’s brought into the science department over the years. Many students do take some of her courses and get interested in biology.”

Grant describes Dr. O as knowledgeable, interesting and a teacher who gives her students a lot of work, but valuable work.

“She’s had many experiences, which you bring into the school,” Grant said.

“It’s a different way of teaching than strict memorization,” she said. “It encourages you to think outside the box.”

Grant also said Dr. O is approachable and accessible to her students.

In addition to being an exceptional teacher, Maguire Thon also describes Dr. O as a cheerleader.

“The kids could always go to her and get help with their work,” she said.

“She makes you think that you can do anything,” Maguire Thon said. “I really wouldn’t be where I am without her.”

For Dr. O, being a teacher is about the ‘ah ha’ moments that students experience, like the moment Maguire Thon remembers, and getting them excited about the subject matter.

Today, Maguire Thon is an ORISE Post-doctoral Fellow with the FDA, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), Division of Microbiology. She works on metagenomic methods for detection of pathogenic E. coli.

Like her fellow alumna, Melissa Elliott ‘04 had a similar experience with Dr. O at Maryvale and also pursued a career in STEAM. Elliott is a dentist at Harford County Dentistry in Fallston.

While she already gravitated toward math and science, Elliott recalls biology was her favorite class and Dr. O was her favorite teacher.

“I remember thinking that she’s not a physician or a doctor who works with patients but if she’s a doctor, then I can be a doctor,” she said.

After graduating from Maryvale, Elliott earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Loyola University Maryland and then graduated from the University of Maryland’s School of Dentistry.

“When I went into dental school, I didn’t feel weird about being a female,” Elliott said. “I wasn’t intimidated.”

Like her colleague, Jeanie Grant is another seasoned female STEAM faculty member. Grant has been teaching math at Maryvale since 1973, and for the previous six years her classroom was across the hall from Dr. O.

“The greatest joy is having them come back in person or sending me emails saying ‘this is what I’m doing and it’s because of you,’” Dr. O said. “I want them to get excited about learning. I truly believe that we’re lifelong learners. If I can get the girls to understand what that truly means, then I feel truly satisfied.”

Traditions

What follows is a sampling of some of Maryvale’s most beloved traditions.

Christmas Shops n Maryvale’s Parents Association — formerly the Mothers Club — organizes the Christmas Shops or Christmas Bazaar. This festive Maryvale tradition is thought to have begun several decades ago, as early as the 1950s or 1960s.

Most recently, since 2015, Abigail Adams Brigstocke ‘86 and Julie Halvorsen have chaired the Christmas Shops.

“I became involved with the Christmas Bazaar in 2015, as a Mothers Club board member,” Brigstocke said. “The following year I was a member of the ‘dream team,’ along with Julie Halvorsen and Chris Kearney. In 2017 we changed the name to Maryvale Christmas Shops with the intention of marketing the event as mini pop-up shops.”

“The Maryvale Christmas Shops has long been an event that symbolizes the true holiday spirit of togetherness,” Brigstocke said. “Maryvale opens its doors to the community, much like a holiday open house. We often forget that Maryvale was built on the foundation of a family home. It is the family atmosphere that has always been the cornerstone of Maryvale’s spirit.”

In 2020, due to COVID-19, the Christmas Shops traveled down Falls Road to Green Spring Station. Not even a global pandemic could curtail this beloved Maryvale tradition.

Julie Halvorsen began chairing the Christmas Shops in 2015. Halvorsen and her co-chair and friend, Chris Kearney, attended different events searching for the perfect vendors for Maryvale.

“We wanted to make it less crafty and more about clothing, jewelry and upscale art and accessories that the Maryvale community would love,” Halvorsen said. “Soon Abigail Brigstocke joined the team and the three of us were excited to make the Christmas Shops a special day for students, parents and friends of Maryvale as well as the public. I love this annual tradition!”

In addition to Julie Halvorsen, her daughters Haley Halvorsen ‘17 and Jane Halvorsen ‘19 have become very involved with this beloved tradition. Jane logs at least a dozen hours each year helping with the event. In fact, she helped with the event before she was a Maryvale student!

Unity Bells n Another beloved Christmas tradition is the unity bells, which each student, faculty and staff member receives at the beginning of Advent.

Marce Fackler Hughes ‘88 P ‘20, Maryvale’s Physical Education Department Chair and Badminton Coach, has 29 Unity Bells, all from her years as a Maryvale employee.

“Unity bells were always dispersed about two weeks before (Christmas) break,” Hughes said. “It was another sign of sisterhood here at Maryvale and we all participated. It was interesting to see how many years students and faculty have been here, based on the number of bells they had. It was also nice to hear the bells in the halls leading up to the much-anticipated Candy Cane Social on the last day as a Community before Christmas break!”

Jeanie Grant, who has been teaching mathematics at Maryvale since 1973, has 38 unity bells.

“The unity bells represent belonging to the Maryvale community,” Grant said.

Ring Day n Each year, on or around the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the junior class honors Mary through a special Liturgy and participates in the Ring Ceremony, a joyous occasion where each girl is presented with her school ring. This beloved school tradition dates back to 1946, just one year after Maryvale first opened. The school ring serves as a meaningful and unique symbol of the Maryvale sisterhood that lives within each Lion.

The junior class is not only united through their rings as a class, but they also are forever connected to generations of Maryvale alumnae.

For some Maryvale students and alumnae, this Ring Day tradition spans multiple generations within a family, as is the case for Virginia “Ginny” Deinlein Onorato ’67, Nicole Onorato Hewitt ’92 and Kenley Hewitt ’20.

This grandmother, mother and daughter reflect on what their Maryvale rings mean to them: Kenley Hewitt ’20 “Before you get your ring you are just part of the school, but getting your ring makes you feel like you are on your way to graduation. It made me feel more connected to the sisterhood and a part of something bigger. It was exciting because of the dance, too. It made me feel a new connection with my mom and grandmother. After the ceremony my friends and I ran outside. I couldn’t wait to find my mother so she could do the first turn of my ring.”

Nicole Onorato Hewitt ’92 “Ring Day meant to me that we were officially upper classmen. Getting our Maryvale rings was like an indoctrination into a lifetime sisterhood with my best friends. Following in the footsteps of my mother and her four sisters made this day extra special. The excitement of having others turn our rings and the culmination of coming together for Ring Dance in the Great Hall was the highlight of my high school experience at Maryvale. I felt the same excitement for my daughter, Kenley, on her Ring Day. I felt her same anticipation leading up to that day, knowing that we would be forever connected having the same experiences and bonds with Maryvale.”

Ginny Deinlein Onorato ’67 “I always loved Maryvale and Ring Day was one of my happiest memories of being at the school. It made me feel honored to be a part of Maryvale’s history and sisterhood.

I am always proud to say that I went to Maryvale. To have my daughter go to Maryvale made me happy but to have my granddaughter go to Maryvale made me beyond happy. It is satisfying that both my Nicole and Kenley like Maryvale as much as I did and feel as proud of the school as I do.”

Additional Maryvale alumnae share their reflections about Ring Day Julia Morrison ‘13 “Ring Day and Ring Dance held an importance to students at Maryvale that continued to shine through even years after our time at the Castle. After graduation, I often found myself explaining the importance of ring and the celebration that I would often compare to “junior prom.” However, Ring Day was even more memorable than the proms I attended in high school. As a legacy (student), I had the absolute honor to be presented my Aunt Yvonne Montanye O’Neill’s ‘78 ring. Closer to my junior year, she had pulled me aside and let me know she wanted me to have it.

What an honor, to see that between 1987 and 2013, she had held on to a high school ring. I make a note to wear my ring whenever I am at a Maryvale event or when I see my Maryvale girlfriends. It is symbolic of the time I spent at Maryvale, as well as the importance the school is to my family and me.

My Maryvale ring symbolizes the connections and forever friendships I created during my time there. I am honored to carry a piece of jewelry that reflects this for both my aunt’s memories and my own.”

Alexandra Fruin ‘07 “I have so many great memories of our Ring Day and Ring Dance. I remember telling my friends in college and realizing how special this tradition was and how close it brought my class as we all celebrated. Specific memories that stand out were the celebrations we had with our friends and families after the ceremony, many of whom had sisters and mothers who wore their matching rings. We all got together for photos and a luncheon and they’re still some of my favorite photos from our high school lives. Many of the women in those photos are people I still talk to every day!

I also can’t forget to say how special it was to celebrate our Ring Dance in the Maryvale Castle. High school boys are not easy to impress, but even a few of our dates were wowed by what a cool experience that was!”

Lake Day n Did you know that there once was a lake down the hill, behind Maryvale’s Castle? Each year, Maryvale students participated in the coveted tradition of Lake Day! Every grade had a “Lake Day” where students would eat lunch and take turns on rowboats. Legend has it that, to the dismay of the faculty, occasionally students accidently “fell” into the lake! Students spent a lot of time by the lake during classes and socializing before a hurricane destroyed it several decades ago, when the storm whipped through campus and blew all of the water out of it!

When Maryvale first opened, and even as late Spring 2020, no one envisioned that Maryvale’s 75th anniversary year would have been celebrated during a global pandemic.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Maryvale has triumphed and thrived! We are delighted to show and share with you, in the final pages of this publication, that the beloved traditions of Maryvale are alive and well in 2021.
