From the Board of Trustees Chair

It is such an exciting time to be a part of the Maryvale community! Interest in the school, enrollment and giving continue to soar under dynamic President Tracey H. Ford and her invaluable Leadership Team.

During the past five years, Tracey and her team have taken the school that we all love to a new level. Just to give you a snapshot, here are a few fast facts:

• Enrollment has skyrocketed by more than 50 students since 2014, bringing the school to max capacity.

• Contributions to the Maryvale Fund have surged almost 70 percent in the last four years.

• College academic awards and scholarships have jumped by more than $4 million since 2014.

• Theater productions have become a part of the highly competitive“Cappies,” and Maryvale has garnered several nominations.

• Maryvale sports teams have won 10 championships since 2015. Go Lions!

• Young alumnae have captured numerous awards, including a Fulbright Scholarship, a Google internship and a national writing award, presented at Carnegie Hall, to name a few.

Even though we have made significant gains in many areas, none of us is ready to stop there! In the pages ahead, you will have the opportunity to review the Strategic Plan that the Maryvale Board of Trustees has passed to guide the school into the future. As you will see, the plan focuses on the areas of Academic Excellence; Faith and Mission; Student Life; School Culture; Innovative Programming; and Stewardship of Resources. I can assure you that Tracey and the Leadership Team already have made strides in implementing many recommendations.

President C.T. Customs, LLC

Scott Cerasoli is the founder and president of C.T. Customs LLC, a real estate investment, development, building and renovation company. Prior to launching C.T. Customs in 2015, Scott founded and served as the chief executive officer of Vision Technology Services LLC, where he led the substantial growth of the organization to nearly 300 employees and $35 million in revenue. During the company’s successful acquisition by national leader BG Staffing, Scott served as the board chair for Vision Technology Services and positioned the company for additional growth. Scott and his wife Natalie are both active members within the Maryvale community as parents to daughter Olivia ’19 and the Maryvale Fund Chairs for the 2017-2018 school year.

Caribbean Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF)

Dr. Winsome J. Leslie, mother of Maryvale student Noelle ’19, is the senior advisor of the Caribbean and head of the strategy team for the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF), the innovation lab for the Inter-American Development Bank Group. The MIF aims to solve economic development problems in Latin America and the Caribbean. Previously, Dr. Leslie served as the MIF’s regional supervisor for the English-speaking Caribbean and Haiti following her tenure as the economic attaché at the Embassy of Jamaica in Washington, D.C. She holds a doctorate in international relations and a master’s in international affairs from Columbia University. Dr. Leslie brings more than 20 years of experience in international finance, business and management to Maryvale’sBoard of Trustees.

Elizabeth “Liz” Macsherry Moag ’79 is a family advocate and member of the Board of Trustees for The Arc Baltimore, a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to providing advocacy and life-changing support for adults and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. In her role, Liz strives to increase their rights and services by securing extended funding for needed programs; promoting laws and regulations centered on equal rights, opportunity and treatment; and preserving integrated education programs. She was an influential member of the Maryvale Alumnae Association, having directed numerous events and strengthened community engagement. Liz, a proud graduate of the Maryvale Class of 1979, is the wife of former Maryvale Board Chair Tony Moag and mother to alumnae Paige ’12 and Hannah ’13.

Message from the President

I continue to be honored to have the opportunity to serve as Maryvale’s president. I consider this role a privilege — one that I do not take for granted.

I love coming to work every day, surrounded by joyful students eager to learn, lead, succeed and make us laugh; fabulous faculty members whose love of teaching inspires each girl to reach a potential never thought possible; amazing administrators whose leadership and innovation propels the school forward; and a skilled staff whose dedication sets them apart. Further, I truly enjoy the partnership with talented trustees; supportive parents; amazing alumnae and the many faith-filled Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.

It is because of the team and our partners that we have experienced measurable success in academic achievement, college acceptances, enrollment, giving and more during the past five years. But, it is also because of you — our most loyal donors listed in this Annual Report.

Sr. Rita Sturwold, SNDdeN, one of my most cherished mentors, is fond of the phrase,“No money. No mission.” She’s absolutely right. Without the valuable resources that so many share so freely, we would not be able to educate young women for life.

Message from the Director of Advancement

Thank you to the many members of the Maryvale community who supported the school in a variety of ways during fiscal year 2017.

I am proud to report that — because of you — we raised more than $775,000 for the Maryvale Fund during the fiscal cycle that ended June 30, 2017. That’s a 15 percent increase from the previous year, and a 70 percent increase from four years ago. All told, the Advancement Office collected more than $1 million because of your generosity.

As we move ahead with the fiscal year 2018 Maryvale Fund campaign, I am hopeful that we can count on your support. Whether you are a loyal donor or a first-time contributor, the school needs your help to make a Maryvale education possible.

Truly, Maryvale’s future success depends on your generosity. Here are just a few reasons why:

• The Maryvale Fund is the second largest revenue source behind tuition. The school relies on this fund to enhance the valuable education that transforms today’s learners into tomorrow’s leaders.

• Tuition covers about 80 percent of the cost of a Maryvale education. Without your gifts, tuition would be significantly higher — putting the school out of reach for many families who want an all girls,’ faith-based education for their daughters.

I invite you all to join the parents, past parents, grandparents, alumnae and friends who have already given to the Maryvale Fund, contributed to the school’s endowment, fulfilled capital campaign pledges or made Maryvale part of their estate planning.

Provide a dynamic academic program that prepares young women to lead in our global and diverse world.

■ Promote academic success for students in grades 6–12 by ensuring that curriculum development and implementation are research-based and reflect best practices.

• Employ an Academic Dean with experience in grades 6-12 education.

• Establish a Professional Development Committee to guide continuing education.

• Update and amplify each department’s Course Scope and Sequence Statements in order to both challenge students and meet student needs.

• Investigate the feasibility of certificate or endorsement programs.

■ Create a Learning Commons that includes state-of-the-art technology to support all facets of the academic program, including a digital media center and an innovative journalism program.

■ Continue to increase emphasis in all areas of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

• Infuse STEM-related skills, behaviors and dispositions in the Scope and Sequence of all content areas.

• Increase Technology and Engineering personnel to support expanded STEM opportunities for students.

• Assess STEM certification.

■ Continue the focus of the St. Julie Billiart Program as a center of excellence dedicated to empowering students with language-based learning differences to achieve success.

• Ensure that all Maryvale faculty, through ongoing professional development, are prepared to support students in the Julie program.

■ Enhance the Middle School music and arts curriculum.

■ Continue and strengthen opportunities for internships and externships as well as explore the introduction of an independent or capstone study program for seniors.

■ Continue support for and focus on college counseling with the goal of preparing/ promoting student acceptance into top-tier colleges/universities and/or the college/university of first choice commensurate with the student’s demonstrated academic record.

With grounding in the mission of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur (SND), provide students grades 6 through 12 with a unique and meaningful opportunity to impact the world through faith and service.

■ Enhance opportunities for prayer and faith life.

• Explore ways to make the Castle chapel a campus center for prayer and reflection.

■ Build SND history and charism into the theology curriculum for all grades.

• Conduct a feasibility study to refine goal and priorities.

■ Increase donor-funded sources for financial aid and scholarship to support Maryvale students.

I give back to Maryvale because I am so appreciative of and grateful for the education I received as a student. By giving back, I can demonstrate my thanks in a way that benefits today’s students as well.

What Keeps You Busy: Family and fitness

Maryvale has matured in many ways since you graduated. What do you wish that alumnae knew about the Maryvale of today?

I'd love for other alums to share in the mix of excitement and nostalgia I feel when I'm on campus today. The new buildings, facilities and repurposed spaces, like the new MAC Lab, are spectacular and serve to better prepare today's students for college and beyond.

What do you consider the best parts of the “new” Maryvale?

Some of my favorite aspects of the “new” Maryvale include the grace with which the new buildings and athletic fields blend with the older buildings, and the vibrancy of the expanded course offerings and faculty credentials.

What seems the same to you?

A walk along the Mary Circle takes me back to my days as a student when I walked that path a thousand times to and from classes (in saddle shoes). The Castle is still beautiful; the boxwood has the same scent after it rains, and the students are building friendships for a lifetime.

This year’s advertising campaign focuses on “Because of Maryvale.” What does that mean for you? How would you complete that sentence?

Because of Maryvale, I am a confident writer and public speaker, and am always ready to take on a new challenge. Because of Maryvale, I am prepared for life.

2017 Senior Class Gift: Leadership Institute Speaker Series

The Class of 2017 parents and students selected an Annual Speaker Series under the Leadership Institute as their Senior Class Gift Project. We are grateful to Chairs Jessy and John Halaby as well as those who contributed to this effort, which will allow Maryvale to present distinguished speakers on a regular basis.

Maryvale recently announced that award-winning novelist Imbolo Mbue will address the Upper School student body, alumnae and guests on campus in March. Best known for her debut novel, “Behold the Dreamers,” Imbolo graduated from an all-girls’ high school in Cameroon before continuing her educational journey at Rutgers and Columbia universities.

“Behold the Dreamers” won the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, the Blue Metropolis Words to Change Award and was an Oprah’s Book Club selection. Named a “Notable Book of the Year” by the New York Times and the Washington Post, the novel has been translated into 10 languages, adapted into an opera and optioned for a movie.
