Message from the Board Chair and the President Dear Maryvale Alumnae, Families and Friends, In this year’s Annual Report, we take a look back on the 2018-19 academic year. The stories and photos showcase the many achievements of Maryvale students and alumnae. You will also read about various ways we are sustaining Maryvale’s commitment to excellence and ensuring that our buildings and grounds continue to be a source of grace and beauty. As we prepare for the 75th Anniversary of our founding, September 9, 2020, we believe our initiatives are laying the foundation for Maryvale’s future. We are especially delighted to share recent improvements on campus, including a major renovation of the Castle and the locker room in Maguire Hall.

Just before the Messenger went to press something remarkable happened! In The Baltimore Sun’s End of Season Rankings, Maryvale’s Cross Country team was ranked 6th; Varsity Volleyball was ranked 7th; and Varsity Soccer was considered for a top 15 ranking. This amazing run of our athletic achievement, which includes Varsity Field Hockey, prompted an unprecedented outpouring of community support and the creation of the student-led slogan LionNation. At each end of season competition, hundreds of Maryvale fans packed the stands, including students, faculty and staff, alumnae, parents of alumnae, grandparents and friends. The feel was electric and the community is grateful for this astounding support. As you read through the magazine, please enjoy a few photos from the championship games. 2 / MESSENGER

Man Maryvale of

Roger Waesche draws on lessons learned at Maryvale.

It has been more than 50 years since Roger Waesche was a student at Maryvale but the impact of the education and faith formation that he received here is long-lasting. “At Maryvale I got a values-based education,” Waesche said. The characteristics of those values, Waesche says, include: hard work, focus, commitment to a purpose, self-discipline, patience, humility and open-mindedness. Waesche attended Maryvale from 1959 to 1968, from kindergarten through eighth grade. He is one of the Men of Maryvale, whose group includes his younger brother John. From 1948 to 1972, Maryvale accepted boys from kindergarten through eighth grade. Maryvale then became an all-girls school in 1973. “There’s a special place in my heart for Maryvale,” said Waesche, a member of its Board of Trustees. “I feel very lucky that my parents chose Maryvale. I still see the beauty in the campus and overall environment.”

If you are a Man of Maryvale, contact Cathy Vitrano Kellermann

As a student at Maryvale, Waesche attended classes in what is now Bunting Hall. 6 / MESSENGER

’73, Director of Alumnae and Parent Relations, at 410-308-8523 or kellermannk@maryvale.com.

Waesche treasures his time at Maryvale in part because of an experience that he had in the seventh grade. One day, during science class, he remembers realizing the enormity and complexity of the world. It was also in that moment that 13-year-old Waesche accepted his Catholic faith. “That was my adoption of faith,” he said. More than five decades later, Waesche can still recall the classroom, row and desk he sat in as he experienced this moment of spiritual clarity.

Bunting Hall In recognition of their outstanding support and generosity to Maryvale, the school takes great pleasure in the naming of Bunting Hall, formerly known as the Middle School. The building is named in recognition of the Bunting family. Dorothy “Debbie” Bunting Duffy and Mary Catherine Bunting graduated from Maryvale in 1953 and 1955, respectively.

“I felt liberated,” he said.

“Maryvale means a great deal to me,” Mary Catherine Bunting said. “I have a special place in my heart for the school.”

After completing eighth grade, Waesche attended Calvert Hall and then Loyola University Maryland where he earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a MBA with a concentration in finance. In total, all 19 years of Waesche’s education took place at Catholic institutions.

At Maryvale, Mary Catherine played field hockey and Debbie was involved in activities including theater and basketball. The Bunting sisters, who lived close to Maryvale, walked to school through the woods.

“ At Maryvale, I got a values-based education...”

In addition to giving generously to Maryvale, Mary Catherine, a former Religious Sister of Mercy and nurse, has concentrated her philanthropic work at Baltimore area institutions, including Mercy Medical Center and Catholic Charities. Debbie, who lived in New Canaan, Conn. until her death in 2014, founded, directed and taught at Ridgemont Montessori School in McLean, Va. She was on the Board of Directors of Oakcrest School in Vienna, Va. for more than 20 years.

After graduating from college, Waesche began a successful career, first working in public accounting as a CPA. In 1985, he began a 31-year career in commercial real estate with a private company that evolved into Corporate Office Properties Trust (COPT), a public company headquartered in Columbia where, over time, he served in the roles of CFO, COO and CEO. He has retired from the corporate world but is an active partner in a real estate investment company with properties in this region and southwest Florida. Throughout his adult life and as a business executive, Waesche has drawn on the values and lessons that he learned during his formative years at Maryvale. Those lessons include that every life is precious, sacred and holy. “We’re all children of God,” he said. “That shaped my life, more than anything. It’s the reality that all humans are special.” In addition to Maryvale, Waesche gives back to the other institutions that have been a part of his life, serving on the boards of Loyola University Maryland and Loyola Blakefield, which his four sons attended. “I strongly believe in Catholic education,” Waesche said, “and giving back to something from which you benefitted.”

Dorothy “Debbie” Bunting Duffy ’53 †

Mary Catherine Bunting ’55

Did you know? In August 1950, Maryvale received permission to construct a building – now Bunting Hall – on the site of the tennis court on the side of the Castle. The following May, the new Lower School building was dedicated. Bunting Hall, nestled just to the right of the Castle, houses two science labs, a locker commons for grades 6 and 7, spacious classrooms used for upper and middle school academics and several administrative offices.

Leaving a Legacy Catherine “Katie” Cochran Peddy ‘62

It is fitting the legacy and memory of Catherine “Kitty” Cochran, an educator, lives on at Maryvale. Her four children – Katie, Peggy, Pat and Joseph – were students here. “She’s the reason all of us went to Maryvale,” said Catherine “Katie” Cochran Peddy ‘62, a member of the Board of Trustees. “She really believed in Maryvale. It was a good education. It was one they could afford. She would be happy to know that I am helping Maryvale.” While Peddy has given financially to Maryvale previously, she recently decided to make a substantial gift, giving her Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to Maryvale. “This seemed like the best thing to do,” she said. As part of the gift, Peddy is naming the new library classroom in the Castle for her mother: The Kitty Cochran Library Classroom. “It means a lot to me,” Peddy said. “Just seeing her name on the plaque will mean an awful lot. She had us reading at an early age. It’s my mother that I owe so much to.”

To learn more about legacy giving to Maryvale, contact Libby Bagli Nagle ’72, Director of Gift Planning, at 410.308.8525 or naglel@maryvale.com.

This was an easy and obvious choice for Peddy because of her mother’s love of learning. Kitty was a teacher at Lutherville Elementary School while her husband, Mickey, was a dairy farmer. The Cochrans lived on a dairy farm in Phoenix. Today, Peddy, a mother of two adult sons and grandmother of four girls, serves as owner and manager of the approximately 100-acre Richfield Farm in Phoenix, which she and husband Tom Peddy purchased in 1985. That farm is only a couple of miles from where Peddy grew up. In addition to running the farm, Peddy volunteers at a 6-acre garden in Baltimore City. She credits her mother with instilling the importance of volunteering and giving back to the community. Peddy’s decision to make a sizeable financial gift to Maryvale comes at what she believes is a pivotal time in the school’s history, she said. “Now is the time to get on that (giving) bandwagon,” Peddy said. Nearly 60 years after graduating from high school, Peddy is quick to recall the morals and discipline that she learned at Maryvale. “You have to have discipline to hold yourself together in life,” she said. “I get goosebumps thinking about it. If you don’t have discipline, you’re going to fall apart in life.”

An Enduring Gift The decision to make a lasting financial contribution to Maryvale was easy for Beth Hart. “I appreciate the woman Maryvale made me into,” said Beth Hart ‘81. “My father always said to give back to your schools because there’s more of a connection. Your education is what you are.” It was not long after Hart graduated from the University of Richmond and landed her first job that she made her first financial contribution to Maryvale. “I’ve always been engaged with the school,” Hart said. “Maryvale made me who I am today.”

“ ...always give back to your schools... Your education is what you are.”

Hart, who attended Maryvale for eighth grade and upper school, gained self-confidence, which she said is particularly important for female professionals. “Maryvale and its all-female education gives you the chance, the opportunity, to be self-confident,” she said. She draws on that self-confidence in the workplace. Hart serves as a Contractor for the Baltimore Police Department and an Information Technology Project Manager for the City of Baltimore. In addition, Hart fondly recalls the discipline, structure and values that she learned in her 13 years attending Catholic schools and particularly during her time at Maryvale. “You’re learning values that you’re going to use throughout your life,” she said. Hart recently came to a point in her life when she decided to make a lasting and substantial gift to Maryvale. She settled on a bequest and the process, she said, was simple. Hart first met with an estate attorney and decided on the percentage of her estate earmarked for Maryvale. She then sent a letter to Maryvale’s Advancement office, letting the school know about her gift. “I had always wanted to make a gift to Maryvale that would make an impact,” Hart said. In the nearly 40 years since Hart was a student here, she is overwhelmed by the advancements that have taken place on campus. “The environment here is very conducive to getting a whole education,” she said. “I wish some of these things were here when I was a student. It’s great to see what Maryvale has become.” Hart hopes that her gift will be used where it’s most needed, allowing for future generations of Maryvale students to continue to receive a challenging college preparatory education so they too can learn, lead and succeed.

Parker sisters

draw on important skills they learned at Maryvale

As a teenager Traci Parker-Lewis was not particularly interested in history. However, she credits her Advanced Placement history teacher at Maryvale with changing her mind – and ultimately her career trajectory. “I would not have gone into history if not for Tucker Fulwiler,” said ParkerLewis ’99. “Mr. Fulwiler had a way in which he taught history. I majored in history because of him.” Today, Parker-Lewis enjoys a successful career in a field that, at one time, she couldn’t have imagined herself: history. She is an Assistant Professor of Afro-American Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. “I think my approach to teaching is directly tied to how he (Tucker Fulwiler) taught us at Maryvale,” said Parker-Lewis. Her sister, Lauren Parker Kelly ’02, has a career in a completely different field – finance – but praises Maryvale for teaching her an important soft skill that she uses as a Senior Business Analyst at T. Rowe Price: time management. At Maryvale, and then in college, Kelly was a student athlete. As a Lion she played field hockey and lacrosse and ran track and field. In 2018 she was inducted into Maryvale’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Kelly developed her time management skills as she juggled high expectations in the classroom and on the athletic field. “Time management was a big thing,” Kelly said. “I had to balance a number of priorities and deadlines. I learned to work smarter. I didn’t have a ton of time to get things done.” Learning that skill early on helped Kelly as she earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from Gettysburg College and a master’s degree in real estate development from the University of Maryland, College Park. She is the mom of two boys, ages 2 and 8.

Left to right: Lauren Parker Kelly, ’02 and Traci Parker-Lewis, ’99.

It has been approximately two decades since the Parker sisters graduated from Maryvale but they remain engaged with their alma mater. Kelly is a member of Maryvale’s Alumnae Association and this summer Parker-Lewis held a book signing event in Baltimore, which drew support from the Maryvale community. Her book, Department Stores and the Black Freedom Movement, examines the movement by African Americans to dismantle racially discriminatory hiring and customer service practices in department stores. Parker-Lewis is writing another book, Beyond Loving: Black Love, Sex, and Marriage in the Twentieth Century, focused during the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements. Parker-Lewis is writing that book at Harvard University, which awarded her a fellowship. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Cornell University, a master’s degree in social sciences and a Ph.D. in history, both from The University of Chicago. The women also credit Maryvale with teaching them self-confidence. “Being surrounded by women allows you to negotiate and have free dialogue. You can be stifled in a co-ed classroom,” Parker-Lewis said. “There’s something about Maryvale that taught us to own our voice and to also have the wherewithal to know when to use it.”

Traci Parker-Lewis ’99 is the author of “Department Stores and the Black Freedom Movement.”

Kelly recalls being an upperclassman at Maryvale and feeling the sense of confidence Parker-Lewis described. “I had really great teachers,” Kelly said. “There were a lot of strong female role models.”

A Snapshot of Academic Achievements STEAM (STEM + ART) Seven Maryvale students participated in The Perry Initiative’s Perry Outreach Program at Johns Hopkins Hospital in October. The highly competitive program is a one-day, hands-on experience for female high school students interested in pursuing careers in science, medicine and engineering. Students met female leaders in these fields, performed mock orthopedic surgeries and biomechanics experiments. Five Maryvale Middle School students participated in the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland Cyber Challenge and earned the highest award – Platinum. During the October event Maryvale students, who were on two of the 83 teams from across Central Maryland, participated on incident response teams that had to determine who hacked a system on a moon colony and how to stop those responsible. Maryvale Chemistry Teacher Amanda Meekins presented her research on “Green Synthesis of Anisotrophic Silver Nanostructures and their Optical Properties” at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in October. Science Department Chair and Teacher Carole Gonzalez helped to facilitate Maryvale’s participation in the National Aquarium’s Terrapins in the Classroom program, which teaches Maryland students about the state reptile, the diamondback terrapin, and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources’ Sunfish and Students program, which educates students about raising bluegill fish in the classroom. This fall she was featured in Shape of Life, a series of classroom videos that illustrate the evolution of the animal kingdom on Earth. Based on a PBS Series, Shape of Life offers students and teachers a first-hand account of how animals adapt and thrive. Visual Arts Department Chair and Teacher Kim Kozak, the recipient of Maryvale’s 2019 Carole Malone Award for Teaching Excellence Award, attended last summer the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery Summer Institute for Teachers. During the week-long program Kozak participated in activities including lectures and examining the gallery’s collection.“The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery Summer Institute affirmed my love of art history and my desire to share that passion with my students,” Kozak said. Maryvale joined nine other schools in the ACE Mentor Program Baltimore Championship in May where they were challenged to design a project to reclaim an industrial lot. Maryvale’s design transformed the area into a community garden with a market and job training classrooms.

UPPER SCHOOL Three members of Maryvale’s Class of 2020 were named Commended Students in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. Alexandra DeBus, Lyssa Kagel and Abigail Miller were honored in September for placing among the top 50,000 scorers of the more than 1.5 million students who took the 2018 PSAT (photo on the right). Eleven students – 10 from the Class of 2020 and one from the Class of 2021 – and three faculty members traveled to Kenya in June for spiritual formation, cultural engagement, leadership development and academic inquiry. During the two-week trip they visited a girls’ school, volunteered at an orphanage and learned about and visited co-ops led by Kenyan women. Six members of Maryvale’s Class of 2019 participated in National Signing Day last fall when they signed the National Letter of Intent. The six student athletes were: Sophia Antonoupolis, University of Maryland, College Park Claire Bockstie, University of Maryland, Baltimore County Tess Keppel, University of Richmond Kristina Lysick, Boston University Mary Christa McWright, Boston College Paige Wilkinson, Arizona State University Maryvale embraces student leadership with student-run clubs. Several new clubs were recently created. Raezel Valencia of the Class of 2021, who is interested in public speaking, helped to establish Maryvale’s growing Forensic Speech Club. The Ski Club, which travels to area ski resorts during the winter months, met Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn at Under Armour’s headquarters in Baltimore. Two members of the Class of 2020 started the Tennis Club, which meets after school in the fall and the spring at L’Hirondelle Club of Ruxton. Students practice there with a tennis pro.

MIDDLE SCHOOL Maryvale’s Leadership Institute hosted last Spring a Middle School Career Afternoon where students worked in groups and experienced a variety of careers and avocations in a fast-paced tour of career stations as they met with professionals. The professionals engaged the girls in interactive activities that represented their careers, including show-andtell and demonstrations with props, storytelling and problem solving. Each year Middle School students spend three days in a Mini-Mester, a project-based thematic learning unit. This year’s theme is “Our Oceans,” focused on aquatic ecosystems and habitats of the ocean and determining the issues they are facing. Students can then use this knowledge to work to inspire others to care about our oceans. Mini-Mester includes a trip to the National Aquarium in Baltimore and students design and construct 3D ecosystems from recycled materials. In the past, all students learned about the Chinese culture in their art and theology classes, read Wonder and had a morning of activities focused around the book. During last year’s Mini-Mester, students participated in activities including African dance, crepe making, Irish Art and Italian sports.

Commended scholars Alexandra DeBus, Lyssa Kagel and Abigail Miller.

THE LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE Four members of the Class of 2019 presented their Leadership Capstone Projects as the final component of the Leadership Certificate Program. Inaugurated in the 2018-19 school year, the Leadership Institute’s Leadership Certificate Program provides students with customized, in-depth leadership training and experiences. These four students, and future Leadership scholars, graduate from Maryvale having completed a specific course track, at least 30 leadership service hours, a capstone independent study, a leadership portfolio and a comprehensive panel interview. For Christy Osborne, giving time or treasure to Maryvale is a rewarding, long-lasting investment.

Osborne has also seen first-hand Maryvale’s impact on three of her 12 grandchildren.

“Giving time or money is not only an investment in a child, but also becomes an investment in your community as they mature and become responsible adults,” she said.

Her grandchildren include Maggie ‘19, Caroline ‘20 and Holly Jean ‘24. Maryvale’s St. Julie Billiart program is the reason the family originally found the school, she said.

Osborne credits her late husband, Hamish, who died in 2016, with inspiring her to give to Maryvale. As a couple, the Osbornes were benefactors of area schools, including the University of Maryland School of Law in Baltimore and the University of Maryland School of Medicine, funding the laboratory director’s position, The Hamish and Christine Osborne Director of Cellular Therapeutics.

“The St. Julie Billiart Program has helped give my granddaughter the foundation and confidence she needed to be successful in school,” Osborne said. “The program recognizes that all children do not learn the same way and teaches them skills to achieve their goals.

Since his death, Christy Osborne has established the Hamish S. and Christine C. Osborne Endowment Fund at Maryvale. Her transformative generosity also includes the means to renovate the St. Julie Billiart wing, portions of the Great Hall and restoring the Castle’s exterior to its original grandeur, which occurred during summer 2019. “I know the names of the scholarship students,” Osborne said. “I have seen them on campus and know the St. Julie Billiart program is giving them the support they need to become successful in class. The renovations of the Castle, with its welcoming classrooms and updated technology, encourages students to learn. When you see the impact of your gift, it is truly rewarding.” 20 / MESSENGER

“It is my hope that every child who attends Maryvale and learns differently has the opportunity to enroll in this program,” she said. Osborne’s granddaughter, Maggie, is excelling since graduating from Maryvale. She is now a freshman at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa. and is enrolled in a 5-year masters program to become a teacher. “Schools need to grow and change with the needs of the students,” Osborne said. “Philanthropy, at any level, allows Maryvale to keep its curriculum current and facilities updated. I am grateful for Maryvale. They are helping to ensure my granddaughters become well educated and compassionate young women.”

Maryvale is engaged in the early stages of a new fundraising initiative intended to raise funds for several major renovations on campus and to grow the endowment by the addition of new funds for scholarships, faculty support, and other priorities. The principal capital projects included the restoration of the centuryold Wickcliffe Castle and its façade as well as renovations on the first floor of the Castle and in the Castle’s new St. Julie Billiart Program Wing. In addition, a new locker room complex was installed in Maguire Hall. There will be more information about future projects and plans in the coming year. We are grateful to the individuals and families listed below for their generous lead gifts and pledges in support of this initiative.*
