Dear Friends of Mary’s Path: What a year it has been! Our hearts are full of gratitude as we celebrate the 30 teen moms and 25 babies who called Mary’s Path home this past year, including eight healthy babies born to teen moms residing with us. Our houses were full of special baby firsts—first smiles, first teeth, first steps and words. It’s been a joy to watch the little ones grow and thrive. We also celebrated many wonderful milestones for our teen moms—high school graduations, college enrollments, and new jobs.

Last year, Mary’s Path added several new programs to its continuum of support for our teen moms. New trauma-informed services in Maternal Mental Health, Child Development, Family Finder, and Substance Use Disorder Treatment ensure more comprehensive and compassionate care for our teen moms and babies. (Learn more on pages 4 and 5). We also reinstated our equine therapy program with new partner Otra Mas, and we continue to offer our teen moms direct access to other evidence-based alternative therapies like art, poetry, and journaling.

Aftercare continues to play a critical role in ensuring that our teen moms make successful transitions to independent living. These services help each teen mom to remain stable in their housing and connected to tools and resources that they need to be healthy, happy members of their communities and good moms for their children. Learn more about Jocelyn on pages 8 and 9 as she bravely shares her story about life— its challenges as well as successes—after Mary’s Path.

Our new white paper, The Need for Specialized Aftercare and Wraparound for Parenting Foster Youth, which can be found on our website, was recently released and is bringing statewide attention to this crisis.

We encourage you to read it as we continue to lead the way on this important issue.

It is thanks to supporters like all of you that we can continue to change two lives at a time. Our work is far from over as we work to enable each teen mom to create a life of dignity, hope, and self-sufficiency for herself and her baby. Together we can accomplish our vision that these vulnerable teen moms become loving, caring mothers and raise happy, healthy children.

Dear Friends of Mary’s Path, We are so grateful for your support and blessings. It is my honor and joy to recap the 2024-2025 fiscal year at Mary’s Path. We are so proud of our accomplishments and grateful for the opportunities that lead us to new strategies that allow us to continue our goal of Changing Two Lives for our teen moms and their beautiful babies.

While statistics continue to show a rise in teen pregnancy in the foster care system in California, there is also significant growth in ways to combat this epidemic and increased awareness about the commercial sexual exploitation of children, which has been a part of the lives of most of the residents of Mary’s Path.

In fact, at Mary’s Path we are advocating for and shaping legislation in the state of California that benefits foster children and those who have been commercially sexually exploited. We are proud of our committed and skilled staff who work daily with the teen moms and babies at Mary’s Path to support their healing and help them begin to build healthy and purposeful lives for themselves and their new families. This is only possible because of your valued support and dedication, and for this we are infinitely grateful.

With the close of this fiscal year, it also brings a close to my four-year tenure as Board Chair. It has been a privilege to work alongside many amazing individuals whose passion for our mission has been such a source of inspiration. I will continue to be an avid supporter of Mary’s Path’s commitment to Change Lives Two at a Time.

What’s New at Mary’s Path?

Mary’s Path is a constantly growing and evolving organization. Over the past year, it has developed and implemented four new programs to meet the complex needs of our teen moms.

Family Finding Program The Family Finding Program at Mary’s Path plays a crucial role in identifying and reestablishing relationships between the teen mothers we serve and their family members or other trusted individuals. Through detailed case reviews, outreach efforts, and collaborations with our mental health team, our Family Finding staff works to locate and engage supportive connections that can provide long-term stability. By strengthening these relationships, this program helps ensure that our residents have a network of care beyond their time at Mary’s Path, empowering them to build a future filled with hope and support.

Substance Use Disorder Program At Mary’s Path, we recognize that recovery and healing are essential to breaking cycles of trauma and instability. Our Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Program provides critical support to young mothers struggling with substance use, helping them develop healthier coping strategies and long-term recovery plans. Through individual and group counseling, education on the impact of substance use, and integration with our parenting program, this program ensures that residents receive trauma-informed, holistic care. In collaboration with our treatment team, the SUD Program helps guide young mothers toward stability and self-sufficiency, giving them the tools to build a healthier future for themselves and their children.

Child Development Program Our Child Development Program is an essential part of caring for the children at Mary’s Path. This program focuses on the developmental needs of newborns, infants, and toddlers in residence and provides regular consultation to the mental health team and residential counselors. As our teen moms continue their healing journey, finish high school, or seek employment, this program ensures that the children’s daily needs are met.

Along with planning weekly developmental infant and toddler curriculum, the program collaborates with the staff and moms to record developmental milestones and prescribes interventions when needed.

Maternal Mental Health Program The Maternal Mental Health Program helps our residents to enhance parenting and foster attachment with their babies, focusing on maternal mental health and early childhood development. Using trauma-informed, evidence-based mental health services, each mental health care plan is tailored to the unique needs of each mother and her baby.

Along with providing individual, group, and family therapy, the Maternal Mental Health Program helps participants identify obstacles that conflict with meeting educational, vocational, social, and independent living goals, and then works with them to develop strategies to overcome these barriers.

Jocelyn’s Story Jocelyn entered the foster care system when she was 6 years old. Due to hoarders in the home, Jocelyn and her younger siblings lived in a tent in the backyard of the home.

“At first I thought it was fun, until I got old enough to realize it was neglect,” says Jocelyn.

At 14 years of age, she found out she was pregnant and soon came to Mary’s Path. It was here that Jocelyn realized just how much her life had been lacking. She knew she wanted more for her own baby.

With holistic care and the loving support of a staff that genuinely cared about her, Jocelyn began her healing journey. The months ahead were filled with caring professionals who made sure she had prenatal care, helped her graduate from high school, and taught her how to be a parent.

“They saw me at the lowest point in my life. I was ashamed, but they loved me for who I was and passed no judgment,” says Jocelyn. “Because of Mary’s Path, I was able to see a better future for myself and my son.”

In May 2025, Jocelyn received The Resiliency Award from the Eddie Nash Foundation for Foster Youth. This award honors individuals committed to working toward success and healthy life goals despite their challenges. Jocelyn invited two guests to attend the awards ceremony with her—Kelli Strickland, LCSW, Assistant Clinical Director, and Maria Moreira, Case Manager, both from Mary’s Path.

170 fun social experiences for teen moms and their babies, including field trips to the beach, meals out, movie nights, and even a special Juneteenth Celebration.

13 teen moms successfully supported through Aftercare services as they transitioned to independent living.

29 teen moms who remain connected to Mary’s Path Aftercare after three years, with more than 80% remaining stably housed.

Impact The teen moms who call Mary’s Path home continue to reach important milestones on their journeys to increased independence and self-sufficiency.

100% of teen moms attended high school, with three (3) high school graduates this year.

Of the three graduates this year, two enrolled in college.

One of the college enrollees obtained a part-time job, while the third high school graduate also obtained a part-time job, enabling both of them to learn life skills like budgeting, time management, and maintaining appropriate workplace behavior.

Smooth Operator

Long before becoming the Vice President of Operations at Mary’s Path, Derrick Perry was born and raised in Southern California to high school sweetheart parents, the middle of three children in a healthy, happy family.

Growing into young adulthood and pursuing his passion for working with underserved children and families, he quickly came to realize that not every child was so lucky.

It would eventually fuel his passion for working with Mary’s Path’s teen moms and babies.

While earning a master’s degree in Marital and Family Therapy at California State University, Dominguez Hills, Perry started work at a treatment center for children with behavioral and emotional challenges. It was during this period that he began to pay acute attention to the needs of marginalized children and families. A precursor to his future, Perry soon found a position working with pregnant and parenting teenagers in the Orange County area.

An impressive career followed. Perry would hold a host of related roles, all of which provided valuable experience. These included serving as Deputy Director at the Department of Public Social Services in Riverside, California, and as Chief Program Officer at a Portland, Oregon organization with over five hundred staff and two hundred clients.

Eventually, his life would take him full circle as he returned to Southern California to join the Mary’s Path team.

“I had already had a fulfilling and positive experience working with teenage moms earlier in my career, and I was excited about the opportunity at Mary’s Path,” he says.

As Mary’s Path Vice President of Operations, Perry is responsible for leading the nonprofit organization’s strategic growth and for overseeing clinical and residential programs within a trauma-informed, inclusive environment. He also manages day-to-day operations, including finance, human resources, compliance, credentialing, quality assurance, and people and culture initiatives.

Given the high percentage of Mary’s Path residents affected by Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children, Perry felt it critical for staff to gain more training in trauma-informed care, and he has been instrumental in leading that effort. He is especially proud to help lead an organization with a truly holistic, comprehensive care continuum for teen moms and babies—one that includes individualized treatment plans, trauma-informed therapy, education, childcare, life skills training, and other supportive services, all in a nurturing, home-like setting.

“Aftercare services especially—including transitional housing—are a crucial but often a missing component for these teen moms that drives a successful transition to early adulthood,” says Perry. For context, Mary’s Path is one of just four Short-Term Residential Treatment Programs (STRTPs) in the State of California with the staff training and programmatic capacity to provide a full range of services for pregnant and parenting teens from the foster system.

“Mary’s Path offers an unprecedented level of support embedded into overall service delivery,” he says.

It’s not all work, all the time for Perry. Now with two grown sons, for fun, he and his partner enjoy world travel and learning about diverse cultures, customs, food, and architecture. He’s also a dog lover and avid hiker, strength trainer, and basketball aficionado.

For now, Perry is excited about the future of Mary’s Path. He plans to continue partnering with CEO Jill Dominguez to identify ways to grow programming, especially pertaining to aftercare and transitional support services.

“We look forward to continued collaboration with our program leaders to strengthen current service offerings and to ensure that Mary’s Path’s dedicated staff have the tools and resources necessary to provide the highest-quality services,” says Perry. ***

What Is an STRTP? Mary’s Path was licensed as a Short-Term Residential Treatment Program (STRTP) facility in 2020 by the State of California’s Department of Social Services.

What does this mean?

An STRTP facility is a structured and intensive care environment designed to provide 24hour support for individuals, like Mary’s Path’s teen moms, who are facing serious emotional, behavioral, or mental health challenges. As an STRTP facility, Mary’s Path offers individualized treatment plans based on each teen mom’s specific needs, including trauma-informed therapy, education, life skills training, and other supportive services in a nurturing, home-like setting.

Mary’s Path aims to stabilize each teen mom in crisis and promote healing, with the goal to prepare them for a successful transition to more independent living, such as a transitional housing program or even returning to their family if that is an option.

The process to be licensed as an STRTP is not an easy one, and required Mary’s Path to be nationally accredited, a formal program and operations plan to be submitted, and its mental health services to be Medi-Cal certified. Along with Mary’s Path, there are only three other STRTP facilities in the entire State of California with the expertise and capacity to work with pregnant and parenting teens from the foster system.
